Can You Clean DPF Ash On The Vehicle? Diesel Particulate Filter

  • Cleaning the dpf soot on high mileage vehicles is not always successful due to ash solids that can build up.
    here I attempt to clean the ash in situ using an acid based chemical

    So the "soot" value is a calculated value by the ECU ? I guess the only worrying thing here is that you could potentially be mis-led if there were a number of other issues leading to failed regens ? I can see where this will lead .......... future parts cannons. Great that you actually tried to clean it first Jimmy rather than just throw a DPF in it straight away. Bravo yet again. Top Man.

      @trialsted 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It would be very difficult for the vehicle to actually measure how much soot is in the DPF. The calculated value is determined from lots of experimentation and testing and a very clever model that uses lots of data including the differential pressure.

    Never tried the brick acid but I had the issue on my old Berlingo 1.6 hdi and as a heating engineer I used a bottle of fernox f3 central heating cleaner and it got all foamy out the tail and cleaned it out never had the fault again 🤷‍♂️ vans still on the road 3years later by another lad

    Because of your previous video with the acetic acid I tried cleaning my Trafic (Talento to be honest) with brick cleaner and water, although diluted more than you did.
    Had the van running while injecting it into the DPF, shut the engine off immediately after and had it soaking for 15 minutes. Ran it for a while to get everything out of the exhaust and now I have a far more responsive van and a higher mpg.
    The live data figures aren't as low as you show there, though.
    Thank you for all your helping and informative videos!

    Watched virtually the entire channel, back to the plant sprayer days 😂 Got tucked up with a Renault Master 19 plate, CHECK EMISSIONS after 6,000 miles. Used spray can cleaners. No effect. Used 2 part cleaners with plant sprayer to limited effect. Used acetic acid 40% 24hr soak, got pressure down to 7hpa. Was happy with 1.75% oil dilution in a 1200 miles. Thought a longer soak will be awesome. Left 1 litre in over Easter. Totally f*cked it. Every time I cleaned it, it got worse. Idling 12-14 hpa. Bought the Launch fluid. No effect. Got to the point of oil changes required almost every week, 8-9% oil dilution. Regen? Soot content was rising ffs. Fitted new a DPF last weekend, idles 6-7hpa when hot, 3hpa on start up, 1% oil dilution after 1200 miles..£750 free delivery, £80 fitting.

      Too strong of a solution for too long of a period of time and corroded all of the flashed metal out of the system so it could no longer passively or actively regenerate. Looks like a stronger solution for a longer period of time just eats all of the good stuff off of everything as well as the ash and you end up with a straight pipe.

    • @JustMe-Dude
      @JustMe-Dude 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Jimmy? you switched to a differnt acid.
      First time around Jimmy tried brick cleaner it was ACETIC ACID, and appears to be a high grade of pure synthesized vinegar. Regular vinegar (3% to 6%) of course won't work you would need at least higher percentage concentrate, so brick cleaning acid (20%) is a good choice. You could actually buy cleaning vinegar at 35%, 45% up to 75%. Probably worth a try but I would think running a DPF rinse after that higher concentration would be a good idea to stop corrosion of the metal coated parts, and the seams of the housing because the stuff eats steel pretty quickly. Pretty sure the preheat catalyst is Flashed platinum ( I just looked it up and platinum resists corrosion from Acetic acid 30%, and Acetic acid Glacial. best to put it in the pressure sensor line to avoid going through the cat, but this acid does eat rubber and neoprene pretty quickly so be careful with anything similar to rubber parts. No idea what it does to the metals in the SCR, but this is a last resort instead of paying $1500 or more for a new DPF. Definitely worth a try. The chemistry suggests that the micro particles of ash, which is actually metal deposits, would be corroded and dissolved. Nice way to get rid of ash Jimmy. Thanks for doing the research.

    It's called oxalic acid. I've used it several times in the past to rejuvenate dead DPFs, however it takes a long time sitting in a fairly strong solution to really work. You also need to almost constantly flush it back and forth to agitate it so works it's way in better. One word of warning, some DPFs contain materials that can be damaged by this acid, but most seem to be fine.
