  • It's National Moth Week 2020 so that means I'm going to be out every night this week backlighting for moths. I've made 2 light traps out of white bedsheets and 15 watt UV blacklights I bought online. Hopefully, I will get a good diversity of moths and other nocturnal insects. If you like moths then be sure to check out ‪@BartCoppens‬

Maybe you already have these names, but I will list a few here anyway.
3:50 - It looks like a well-camouflaged Underwing Moth, possibly Catocala amica or Catocala lineella.
4:05 - It's probably something like a Forage Looper Moth, Caenurgina erechtea.
4:20 - Wow, it looks like a dark form of a type of Bird-Dropping Moth, but I'm not really sure about it. Did you find out?
5:46 - That is probably a type of Geometrid Moth called Melanolophia canadaria. ♂
    6:30 - Black-bordered Lemon, Marimatha nigrofimbria
7:04 - It's probably some kind of Herpetogramma.
7:15 - It might be a Flat-faced Longhorn Beetle, maybe something like Graphisurus despectus. ♀
8:55 - Green Coverworm Moth, Hypena scabra (There are more of them later. )
    10:08 - Beautiful Wood-Nymph, Eudryas grata
11:38 - It might be something like a Brown-shaded-Gray Moth, Iridopsis defectaria. ♂
11:57 - Shagreened Slug Moth, Apoda biguttata
12:12 - Zebra Conchylodes, Conchylodes ovulalis
12:30 - It's a Prominent Moth, something in the genus Datana.
There might be a few others that can be picked out, but I'm not sure about them.

hello! i hope to get into blacklighting, are proper bedsheets needed or is a white towel acceptable? (likely for a short amount of time tho, wanna make sure bugs like my area before i spend money!)

The only problem I could see would be the legs getting stuck in the towel fibers. A white t-shirt will work as well or even just a light colored wall.

i would love to do this sometime but have a huge fear of getting bitten by bugs, where you able to prevent this?
