I remember a long time ago, my mother would add something called 'bluing' when she was washing whites. I asked her why and she said blue makes whites look whiter.

Same here. I remember (talking early 60s) white clothes being immersed for a certain time in water with a blue dye dissolved in it, then left to dry under the sun. This was supposed to make them whiter.

@@mhtweeteryep. This has been a thing for a long time alr. I remember back in prob grade3 or 4. Im in one of those Asia country where school uniforms is white shirt. When i buy a new shirt, i notice that the old shirt look white but have blue tint to it. I have no idea why would a dirty old cloth look blue. Then i found out that the cloth washing powder added some small blue dye to it so that it counter the yellow tint of dirty old cloth.
Still recommended for nurse white uniforms actually

Even better than just adding blue is using optical brighteners, which absorb uv light and re-emit it as blue, so it's not just white but BRIGHT white. Laundry detergent, paper, and old carpet cleaning products use these all the time.

Yes we need more people exposing the fraudulent lies too many people are fooled by. It’s like those 10,000 lumen $15 Chinese flashlights on Amazon have also been proven fake. It helps prevent at least some people from wasting their money. It’s unfortunate the FDA and FTC are not better funded to go after more of the fraudsters.
The other problem is even *if* it worked, it would require that it be staining your teeth with a purple in order to actually counter the yellow staining that is there. Simply putting purple on your teeth then washing it away would defeat all the purple in the first place

Everything you said was spot on. I painted cars for 15 years. An easy way of reducing the chroma or "saturation" of a certain color tone it's by adding the apposing color on the color wheel. And to make a white look cleaner a blue or purple is an easy way to do so.

What's actually wrong with the process; why does it not work? I can think of one possible reason, but it's kind-of iffy in itself: the signs of aging happen because cells lose track of what they're supposed to be. Where it gets iffy is the question of whether the immune system will attack a cell which isn't what it's supposed to be, or whether it'll just assume it's meant to be what it's become.

Yellow light has a wavelength of around 570-580nm.
Purple is around 380-400nm.
For an object to appear a certain color, it must absorb most frequencies of light OTHER than the frequencies associated to the color that object appears as. The frequency of light that the object appears as is reflected instead of absorbed.
So if the purple night light is monochromatic (only emitting a single frequency of light) than anything that does not reflect purple light would instead absorb it and appear black.

First part of your video comes really close to a color perception video I wish you'd do. One that explains the white/gold or blue/black dress. Your brain constantly does an auto white balance (adjustment for the color of the light) based on the expected color of what it sees. It transforms your color perception to match what color it thinks the light is. If a scene or photo lacks sufficient lightning cues, it's possible to get two people to simultaneously see completely different colors. In the dress picture, those who assume the light is white see the dress as white/gold. Those who notice the tiny bit of background in the photo see it is yellow and overexposed. Their brain assumes the light is bright yellow, and they see the dress as blue/black.
What of those folks who saw the dress as baby blue & muddy brown - the actual colors of the pixels themselves?

I'm currently studying IT and have recently done some learning on printers and monitors and I didn't realise how in dept colour theory was. I'm glad you also covered this in this video.
Oh man, if you’re learning about that in the context of monitors and printers, you haven’t even dipped your toe into the ocean yet. It’s nightmarishly complicated! Next you’ll start learning about CMYK in addition to RGB, then the kelvin color temperature scale, color rendering index or CRI, Adobe, Pantone, and a whole host of other things just to confuse you even more when it comes to calibrating displays and printers and cameras/photos and graphics. It’s no small miracle that anything actually looks like it should, and that colors match as intended - there are a lot of geniuses out there who’ve worked very hard for over a century to make all of that work so well that nobody outside of those industries even thinks about it anymore.
Actually one of the coolest things about it is how much of that has come from artists rather than scientists. Ultimately it’s science that’s made it work right, but they got a huge head start because of the work of a handful of highly influential artists over the last several centuries. There’s some pretty great videos on TH-cam by some artists who go over light and color theory in terms of painting and drawing - very _very_ counterintuitive and remarkably awesome to learn!

Color theory also bleeds into psychology. It was used extensively in Breaking Bad to show each character's emotional state in the particular shot. Rewatch knowing this (and the stuff above re: RGB / CMYK) and it changes how you see the show....and everything, lol.

Same. However, we do know that follow up with the magic shampoo or else it fades back to yellow/orange eventually. So maybe people will have to use too much like they often do with the magic shampoo.

here's the trick for when i'm painting with purple and yellow. shadows are naturally blurry, so i always paint shadows with lazy rules, and if you put dark purple in a dark shadow, near a bright yellow or orange, it just looks prettier and you can hide the purple easily. feels better
edit: they use that purple stuff in hair products to make it all glistenny and shiny as well

Learning red, blue and yellow are not the primary colors in subtractive coloring was thanks to some TH-cam vids. Most of the time, don’t believe what you see and read online, but when I tried mixing yellow and magenta at home to see for myself, I was amazed to see a beautiful bright red staring back at me. Don’t get me started on how magenta and blue make a much more vibrant purple than any red and blue combination ever did. Purple is my favorite color so that’s a big deal for me.
The purple shampoo is designed to make your hair less BRASSY. It tones out yellow or brassy highlights and makes them darker. Brassy highlights are unwanted.

the main reason purple and yellow are complimentary colors is because purple is the combination of red and blue, all complimentary colors mixing involve one color that is a mixture of the primary, so when you mix in the leftover primary, you'll get black.
however the best way to darken yellow isnt the use a complimentary, but is to mix in a blue bias brown like burnt umber... that is because yellow object dont produce black shadow, they product dark brown shadow that just look black to our eyes...

I'd love to learn about the issues with subtractive colour mixing. I've long noticed that useful colour wheels differ from the simple hue circle easily generated with RGB, but I don't know why.
They were using indigo and the cobalt-blue smalt to whiten clothes in the 18th century. Indigo was harder to use, but that's not anything to do with the color difference. It's because indigo as a physical substance is a dye; it can permanently change the clothes color if you're not careful. Smalt is just very finely ground cobalt glass.
Purple shampoo? Maybe it's a regional difference or maybe things have changed over time. All the old books I grew up with called it "blue rinse". This was also the name on the very rare occasions such secrets of the well-kept mature woman were mentioned around small boys. ;)
He messed up additive and subtractive colors. Subtractive is the cyan yellow magenta, additive is RGB

Though not used as much, "bluing" is still around for laundry. As you alluded to, it also used to be used in older women's hair which was white. Hence, "blue hair" is slang for and old lady.

Awesome video, maybe it could have been measured by taking the rgb values from an area of the teeth applying the product in one side and traditional tootpaste in the other? I mean using the color theory as an argument to "whiten" the teeth seems sketchy, but some actual nerdy measurements would have been interesting.
Also, what other properties does it have? Like fluor, something abrasive, alcohol or is it just some type of pigment?

In your subtractive color video, get some Dioxazine violet (Winsor Violet) and Phthalocyanine green (Winsor Green Blue Shade) from Winsor and Newton and mix them. You will get a blue shade.

sometimes the epoxy resin that crafters and woodturners use can yellow over time so people add purple or blue dye to it when mixing to neutralize the yellowing that occurs.

Another application is in manufacturing and art, adding a hint of blue dye to slightly-yellow plastics or resin can neutralize the yellow look. That said, it does NOT make the plastic or resin look white, it makes it look GRAY.

This is something we do in photo editing to change the white balance.
Photos shot with a cheap light setup at a lower temperature can be made to look natural by varying the color tint.

I believe the video you showed was more about polarized light rather than its pigment, you can get things to look purple or yellow with just a few polarizers.

It doesn't matter whether you use additive or subtractive colors. Complements are the same. Either yellow is a mix of red and green and the compliment is blue, or yellow is a primary color and the complements are magenta and cyan, which mix to blue. The only way you get purple is if you make the primary colors red yellow and blue, and that's not right for additive or subtractive colors. But they teach it in school for some reason.

Sad part is the product actually works, just not in the "blink and you'll miss it" manner portrayed in the ads. I started seeing notable whitening after a week of use. The team responsible for promotions might have singlehandedly ruined this product.

I use a whitening shampoo on my Komondors and it really brightens them up. It is dark blue to start out with. I is very noticeable after i use it. I didn't know it was just hiding the yellow.

Well, some of this can work in make up, to hide bruises or stubble on the face, you use orange as it s the opposite of the colours you are trying to hide - that being blue/purple. Vice versa, if you have a red spot on your face, using blue/purple over it will hide it.
But then it may turn black isn't it?
And green against those cheeky red spots. Works well for some reason

There is also purple shampoo for cleaning white or grey horses, and this just explained to me why that was.
Yes I used to use it on my flea bitten grey colours Arabian at horse shows! I'm 41 now but when I used it I was about 15 so it's going back a long time now...... I'm only going off memory here? I think it was called "Lincoln magic white"

Great on color explanation. I actually commented on that ad because it's bogus as the most common reason teeth are yellow is because of foods drinks of dark colors as well as plaque build-up over time. What bleaching does is open the pores in the enamel, allowing all that build-up dirt over time to come out returning your teeth to their original color, which in most cases is white (but not always). The ad makes it seem like teeth just turn yellow as if it's a color, but it's more than that.

Blue to white has been a well known optical illusion for us in developing world. We have old blue detergent for this. Modern detergent no longer do this due to using actual bleach to improve whiteness while also having color bonder to improve color contrast on clothes.
I guess it's similar to the technique used when they had blue glass incandescent light the neutralize the yellow and make it look white.

many laundry detergents actually use phosphors to make whites luminesce in UV light from the sun.
JAMES! My daughter and I noticed when you held up the petri dishes that your left hand looks much older than your right. Sun damage from driving? Put a UV blocking film on your car window or put some sunscreen on your left arm.
This is like those videos that show you can make a B&W image have colour by adding a Red, Green and Blue filter atop of it
The only thing I've seen this work on is white frosting that has a slight yellow tint and adding a drop or two of violet food coloring and mixing it in a mixer will make it a pure white frosting.

I'm glad someone finally addressed this. As someone who knows color theory I've been seeing those ads and screaming; "THATS NOT HOW COLOR WORKS!!!" at my phone.
I read that all clear phone case plastic has yellow tinge but they add blue dye to offset the yellow and make it look clear. When the blue fades it looks yellow again. Thats why we think clear phone cases turn yellow over time. But thats not the case since they were always yellow but it was just hidden by blue additive in the plastic.
I cant verify the authenticity of this though.

basically, physical colors or paints mixing together will give you negative reflection which is black. And while light-beam colors will result to light spectrum that gives White.

We see a LOT of dodgey claims these days. Even the BEAR device ... is it actually having any impact on the reduction of the wrinkles or is it the "serum" that's doing the magic? And is the "serum" really just moisturising cream?
3 months ago I had really dry, creased skin under my eyes - it almost looked ready to crack. The problem was I was only getting 3-4 hours / night of sleep and was dehydrated. Some simple moisturising cream, drinking more water and giving my body a decent night's sleep (7-8 hours) fixed all of that within about 3 days.
So I'm more than just a bit sceptical about the BEAR device and also whether people really need to spend unnecessary money on a device that's not achieving anything that's not already possible at a fraction of the price. It would be great to see a comparison of two people with similar skin conditions and dermal composition, age, etc., ... trying the BEAR solution vs normal moisturing cream, water and a cold face-roller.

I think you should try a bluer filter. Something that is either violet or indigo in hue. This would have an average absorption peak around yellow, rather than green. It is actually possible to get something that shines with a certain color to shine white, if done right.
If you perfectly chose the filter color that absorbed only that one type of yellow and also had a banana that was also only that one specific yellow color, then the banana should be black. All light that comes from the banana is absorbed by the filter. For example, let's say instead of a filter, we only illuminated the room with a violet light. Then the banana should abosrb that violet light and look darker than anything in the room that is the color white. Anything that has a color is absorbing some light from the room so that if you convert it to a greyscale it should be darker than a "white" object. So no matter what it should be darker than his shirt.
@@TheActionLab Ah I think you're right. At the time I was thinking of the time I got a light shining through Rhodochrosite to appear white when passing through a cupric acetate solution. But the difference there is that the Rhodochrosite allows both cyan and red light through, with an excess of red. When the cupric acetate solution absorbs the excess red, you're left with approximately equal amounts of red and cyan light, which gives you white. You definitely do not have that setup with the banana so it's not possible.
