@StuffMadeHere I have an idea for your .27 cal pencil sharpener. First you need to vent some of the gas off. Second don't try to force too blunt objects together and expect a sharpened result, in other words try you can't just compress the wood on the pencil. Try the sharp angle on the sharping end again but this time try to not only cut the wood instead of compress it, but also give the cut off bits somewhere to go. I wish i could leave a diagram in comments, but generally if i were to try to build this i would vent the gas off at the same place the cut off bits go. Hope you try this in the future, this video was very fun watch. Keep doing what you do!
10:15 easy: -2 for not seeing what's happening -1 for having to spin on your own -1 for shooting wood dust all over the place -1 for could be way pointier +5 for CHAINSAAAAAAAW!

My favorite part of the truck sharpener is that I know for certain, that anyone that saw him doing this would’ve imagined this was something way crazier than a pencil sharpener.
how do we get over to that island. random guy: "catapult." Engineer 1: "well that wouldn't work bec-." Engineer 2: "it's to late now we have to build one" random guy: "your goddam right."
Bro wanted to make a vertical particle accelerator for pencils. A pencil accelerator. If he does gas he should make like one of those gas charges BB guns to shoot blades lol
Or instead of firing it into a cone, use the charges to clamp a cone shaped mold around the outside. Like book style. That way there's space around the edges for the shrapnel- I mean, scraps, to escape without smushing into the graphite, and the actual explosive force only meets steel instead of the soft pencil. He could probably also do progressively smaller rings of blades with gaps in between if he wanted to fix the original method. So that way it basically peels away layers as it travels and the excess can get out of the way.
for the .50 cal powered sharpener, instead of trying to impact form the pencil, why not use the acceleration to propel the pencil past a series of razor blades, that progressively shave it down to a point? the razor blades would also act as a brake, each one taking some of the momentum away and converting it to heat, which could potentially prevent the pencil from exploding at the end of the blade-form edit: for clarity, i'm more or less proposing you make a pencil gun and then use that gun to shoot the pencil into a helical cone of razor blades that will shave the pencil-bullet while decelerating it
@@jonoel6638 come to think of it you could just make a really really long barrel that comes to a point with some vents at the end so the gasses have somewhere to go and the rifling would take care of the sharpening on its own
Cool idea, although I have some doubts on a technical aspect. Shooting a pencil into a helical cone of razor blades leaves you with many long strips of pencil wood. In case u actually found circular blade, you'd get wood straws with increasing diameter depending on how many blades you have.
22:55 This reminds me of the time in middle school I was bored and I put my pencil in between the metal cuffs of my binder and spun it around to make arrow headed pencil tips and other wacky shapes. This is just the SUPER fancy version of that
The sharpeners themselves genuinely could be considered contemporary art! You should try to get them into a gallery! You could argue they raise a lot of questions about the absurdity of mass production and automization.
I don't think you even need to argue those things, I think they stand as art by simply labeling them as pencil sharpeners. And maybe have a nearby video playing showing each of them in action.
This is a great idea. Don't say anything about what it means, let people talk about it like right here under this comment. Artistic explanations are lame anyways.

The "pantograph lathe" is actually a real thing called a tracer attachment for manual lathes and the perfect companion for them is actually a water jet table to cut out the templates needed.
There's a complete "genre" of machine tools that use the pantograph or a similar mechanism to copy a template. They are kinda obsolete today, being replaced with CNC machines, but back in the day it was an excellent way to mass produce identical objects. Most notably, the pantograph milling machine is still used to cut/copy keys when you take them to the locksmith. Also, pantograph mechanism is also used to establish the sliding electrical contact with conductors, mostly in trains, trams and trolleys.
I was on a trip once and I desperately needed to sharpen my pencil but I had nothing to do so with. Using my infinite wisdom, I took off the metal part that holds the eraser and used that to sharpen my pencil
The pantograph does seem genuinely useful as a lathe attachment for artists. There's a lot of people working in very tiny scale and a tool like that would help them achieve it
Engineering is So much more fun when you are working on a project off your own back and driving the project. Pick something you are passionate about creating and just start. You will be amazed what you will figure out along the way! :) you can do it.

@@hiiamelecktro4985well for electric stuff that is basically enough but if you wanna build samething out of metal you need at least the basic handtools for around 500€/$/£ and progress is painstakingly slow 😅
Have you looked into whether there are any decent makerspaces near you? They can definitely be a good option when buying all the tools you want doesn't make financial or spatial sense.
I believe something like that exists. I'm trying to remember what I saw. I think it was not technically a pantograph but a man was turning uprights for a production product. Think like the supports for a wooden balcony / stairs railing. They had a pattern and each one needed to be the same and he had a pattern he was using to make that happen.
there is a version for larger wood lathes that i know of. You cut out the profile of your shape and it just links a tracing probe 1:1 with a cutting head and it will do anything without undercuts pretty well@@davidbwa

Worth the wait!
10:15 easy:
-2 for not seeing what's happening
-1 for having to spin on your own
-1 for shooting wood dust all over the place
-1 for could be way pointier

This is what I imagine what it would be like if an engineer followed through any idea no matter how dumb they seem. This is why I love this channel!!
He then invented a mechanical pencil..... J/k this is the prequel to Saw, he was a mechanical engineer and thats how he built all his contraptions.

Engineer 2: "it's to late now we have to build one"
random guy: "your goddam right."
yeah, and there's also i did a thing for an even more unhinged engineer
me and my friend one time tried to design a raft powered only by the fact that the propeller is inexplicably very hot
That’s basically what the channel I did a thing is, but with an amateur engineer.
On the bullet one, Use the pressurized gas from the charge like an air knife to slice the cone instead of trying to form a point through impact.
Got the same idea. Weird that he went the other way around
@@XIIchiron78 that’s a great idea! Did you just watch Iron Man or something😭? It’s like the suit up scene where his armor flys onto him

He truly is great
Damn, I didn't expect to see a wild Tom. A bit soon to be researching the best pencil sharpener to buy for a school pencil case?
for the .50 cal powered sharpener, instead of trying to impact form the pencil, why not use the acceleration to propel the pencil past a series of razor blades, that progressively shave it down to a point? the razor blades would also act as a brake, each one taking some of the momentum away and converting it to heat, which could potentially prevent the pencil from exploding at the end of the blade-form
edit: for clarity, i'm more or less proposing you make a pencil gun and then use that gun to shoot the pencil into a helical cone of razor blades that will shave the pencil-bullet while decelerating it
I had the same thought. Better to actually sharpen it to a point than try to compress it into one
Same idea. A gun already has a rifled barrel which puts a spin on the projectile (pencil) and then just a cone sharpener
@@jonoel6638 come to think of it you could just make a really really long barrel that comes to a point with some vents at the end so the gasses have somewhere to go and the rifling would take care of the sharpening on its own
I should have read through the comments BEFORE i posted🤦♂️
Cool idea, although I have some doubts on a technical aspect. Shooting a pencil into a helical cone of razor blades leaves you with many long strips of pencil wood. In case u actually found circular blade, you'd get wood straws with increasing diameter depending on how many blades you have.
Never in my life have I tought I'd be watching a 28min video about pencil sharpeners while having the best time ever.

Absurdity? If anything it points out the human touch in even the most mechanized things.

Honestly, the pantograph lathe is a really cool idea. It would probably make it easier to make consistent bowls and cups
They use them to make airplane propellers.
Yeah, honestly even just a tiny one like he made in this would probably be a cool kit to play around with
You should check out Matthias Wandel's panto router setup. Not quite a pantograph lathe, but still a pretty cool use for the idea.
