September 1, 2023: He was the lonely lion that was left behind for six years when a private zoo closed down in Armenia. Then Animal Defenders International brought him home to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa. This is his journey, donated by the Qatar Airways Cargo We Qare programme, and his first steps in the land of his forefathers. Due to a lifetime of poor nutrition, he has spondylitis, an inflammatory disease which can cause bones to fuse, exacerbated by confinement and lack of exercise which has left his legs weak. This causes him difficulty walking and his spine is arched. ADI’s veterinarian had begun treating this and, with more space than he had ever known, his mobility had improv.
Thank You ADI and Qatar Airlines for getting Ruben to South Africa. Now he can live the best life yet. No more loneliness, No more small cage, just happiness and a lot of big cats around to answer his roars. Plenty of sunshine and food and enrichment activities and love and care and kindness. This will be the life that he always dreamed of and hoped and wished for.

@@svenmandelkorn3238 he won't survive if he is set free to fend for himself. Unfortunately this is the reality of many animals kept in bad conditions in captivity for a long time.
I'm grateful for caring people who have improved his quality of life and removed him from jail. Circuses, zoos etc should be banned worldwide and the animals rehomed in sanctuaries.

Seeing him nap, in the sun, with the breeze blowing thru his hair, is amazing. Such a beautiful soul.
That's not true in South Africa if the truth be told they keep lions in prison like you're lying that you're seeing on the screen right now and then for $50,000 people from America can come over there and hunt them the big bawanna moes

What's wrong with his back legs
This brought tears to my eyes. As he stepped out of his crate, he put his head to the ground and tasted the earth, as though he was kissing the ground as a thanks for his freedom. I hope he won’t stay lonely too long.

What a fantastic lion... wish it was in the Mara in Kenya or Kruger Park though... but I guess he can't be "wild" sadly... let's hope we can breed him and his sons and daughters can run truly free... we need to keep the traces of the barbary alive (he clearly has some of those genes)

Bought him some time, from a sad situation. Some atrocious conditions he was living in. A simple google will get you there. Squalor really. If he is ever released fully, he will be killed quickly. Keep his pillows fluffy, keep him well fed with his meds, and fresh toys. Happy Lion.
