    WOW! There were just so many cool things about this cut out. Not only was the hive a monster, but I got to hang out once again with world famous TH-camr Mike Barry from Mike Barry Bees. Now folks, if you are one of the few that don't know about Mike, I highly recommend you go and check out his channel, you will bee glad you did. I first meet Mike some 13 years ago at the same bee club that I meet Ralph and Charlie at, The River Region Bee Club in Covington Louisiana, and I have to say, all the 100 plus members of the club are great people.
    Now, about the rescue, surprisingly it went very fast. Within twenty minutes of beginning to remove comb, the queen was safely in a cage, and about an hour later, all the comb was in totes. The bees and the queen went to another beekeeper in the Franklinton Bee Club where they were merged with a queen less hive, and Mike promised me an update on them.
    All in all, it was a great removal/rescue and we all had a lot of laughs doing it. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

    Mike!!! I just saw him at the conference!!! :) I have to say that I LOVE that building and could not wait to see the details regarding how they situated themselves in that structure! I collected my first honey bees from an abandoned Victorian farm house :) I wish you guys would share about entrance size, how many entrances, and if they seal the interior. I like Mike's method of smoking... :) Very enjoyable to watch and thumbs up as always! Missed you at the HL-Conference, Mr. Ed! I hope we can catch up next year! Stay safe always! I would love to have seen the interior surface of that wall, what exposure was that? Was all of the brood concentrated down towards that bottom entrance? Sorry for all of the questions. With all of the removals, you would be a prime source for feral colony statistic gathering. Any top vent or upper entrance, or just the bottom?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Frederick, I'm so sorry I missed you and everyone else at the Conference, but I will be there next year for sure. I should have pointed out how the bees propolised the entire interior of the space, it was as if the wood had been shellacked. You will see on the video I post in another 2 weeks just that very thing. I'm glad you think I should speak of my observations about the bees and their living arrangements, I never think to say them out loud but think of them as I observe it. From now on I will make it a point to do so.These bees had the entire top of the hive sealed and there were 3 entrances on the bottom and one about mid way up. Take care brother, God's peace.

    The gorgeous Cypress wood on that old building inside the wall untouched and the color!! The outside boards are barely weather worn gives testament to amazing wood working ability and hard wood buildings. They don't make them like they used to. Thx guys

    The hive was so big! I was reminded of a trip I took spelunking into some caves in the Southeastern Bavaria and found a hive that went from the cave mouth deep in almost 30’ deep and multiple thick bands of comb hanging from the rock almost to the bottom of the cave 14’ high. It was about 8g wide and rounded. Getting into the cave and by the bees was a slow and painstaking endeavor. I will never forget the industry of that colony. It certainly looked like it had been there for years and contained millions of bees.

    Pity they had to be relocated. But if there was a tree to come out and they wouldn’t do the job until the colony was removed, then there were limited options. The worst option, would have been killing the colony and tainting the comb and its contents. The better option by a long chalk, was the cut-out and colony relocation. So the queen, bees, brood & some stores go on to live and thrive. Good luck to their first beekeeper and of course to the bees themselves.

    8 ft 5 in long figure 16" stud spacing and 4" deep (I know studs are 3-1/2" but that's an old building and in the day studs were actually 2"x4") that equals 6464 cubic inches or 3.7 cubic feet of comb. Thats a FAIR amount. 😃

    Looking for some guidance on what to do with some frames that have wax moth damage. Will the bees clean them up or do I need to tear out all of the wax and just leave a little strip at the top for them to build on? These frames have natural wax with wires in them. I have them in my shop right now just trying to figure out what I need to do so I can use them this spring/summer. Thanks.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My recommendation, clean them up the best you can and then stick them in a freezer for 48 hours. That will kill any surviving eggs.Once they are cleaned up, the bees can handle it from there. God's peace Jay.
