Let me begin by saying I DO NOT like cold weather. I choose to live in Louisiana because it has way more hot days than cold days and that is perfectly fine with me. However, I DO love wrangling bees, and if it's cold when the time comes to wrangle some bees, I'll just have to layer up. When it comes to cold weather, I ain't no Ian Steppler.
This adventure finds me and Charlie headed up to Mt. Hermon, Louisiana, about 50 miles north of the abbey, or as Charlie calls it," cow country." We found some really great bees and a bunch of honey as well, and despite of the cold weather, the bees were successfully removed and relocated to the abbey. Mr. Ed you and Charlie are a blessing sent to us from God to save our precious honeybees. Thank you so much for all ya'll do. Keeping you and yours in my prayers. Stay safe and God bless. P.S. does it harm the bee's when you vacuum them up and are you using a shop vac to do it? Also, what do the remaining bee's that fly around do that you don't get? You've probably showed what you used and explained things before but if you did-i guess I missed it in my old age 😂. I'm just trying to learn more and understand how things are done. My grandpa did it different yrs ago in the 70's.
The bee vac that I use is a shop vac, but it has been modified to create low suction so as not to harm bees. The few bees I don't get hopefully will find another colony to live with, but I try my best to get as many as possible.Thank you for your kind words and for your blessings. God's peace Dee.

In Saudi Arabia, they raise bees better, and they have many wonderful types
These bees were feral bees that were removed and relocated to our bee yards where they can then live out their days free from the worry of being killed because they were not where it was safe for them. Golden Rod is a weed that blooms in the early fall, and is generally our last nectar "flow" for the year. A flow is when plants are producing nectar. Thanks for watching. God's peace Heather.

There's ice in the front yard but we get that occasionally weather is a whole lot different now than it used to be . The cup of water beside the bed I remember waking up many mornings and it be froze solid got it better than that now but I still remember the carpet blowing up off the floor when the wind blew

Nice hive. I never hear you mention varroa or any treatments. Have you found a way to avoid any treatments?
Our bee yards are all untreated. I have never treated for mites, beetles, or wax moths. The bees are allowed to handle it on their own. Yes, we do have dead outs all the time, last year it was about 30% of our population. However, that number is way less than the national average of 40 to 50% to those who do treat. It is always a matter of personal choice as to weather a beekeeper treat their bees or not. I do not advocate either one, but I choose not to treat. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Maybe hand warmers in the brood container would keep them warm enough. 🤔
I don't think hand warmers will do the trick. At 40 degrees better to leave them chilled and get them home quickly, they need a box quick. If you give them reserves or feed them 40 degrees they will still fly, they should be ok if you get them in a box in a descent timeframe.
Surprisingly, by keeping the brood in the ice chest, as long as it is capped, they do al right. If it is uncapped, they will not make it. God's peace Leann.

Think in the old days, in the UK, you could only get 'certain colours'. My childhood Home, School, Hospital etc, were all painted sludge blue,
anti 'fly' light & dark green, light beige, and an odd bit of orange !
A relative once said the colours were 'like fresh flowers in the 60's, and these colours (flowers died in the Vase) in the 1970's !!! 🤣
UK paint was Delux aka TV Ad 'Old English Sheep Dog'! Guess Ford said the same in the US, your Car or Truck is any Colour as long as its 'Black'. 😉
Prefer my Bees to anything 70's, still have trauma to flares, stripes, VW beetles, and large glasses. 🤣

I'm curious about a few things:1-Are you a Monk? 2-Does one have to be Catholic, in order to be a Monk? 3-What do Monks do? 4-Do they have to dress in Cowls, or anything like that? Please understand-I'm definitely curious about these questions that I've just asked you. I looked at Wapedia, under the Definition of "Monk", and the definition told me that there were several types of Monks, of which some were Catholic, some were Christian, and some Monks belonged to other orders.
I am understandably curious. Can you help me out with these questions?
1. I am not a monk, but I am very much attracted to the monastic lifestyle.
2. To be a Benedictine monk, which this particular order is, being Catholic is necessary. However, there are many different orders, and some of them do not require a person to be Catholic.
3. The life of a monk can simply be summed up as a life lived in community with brothers serving under an abbot. Together, they glorify God through their prayer life and work.
4. The Benedictine monks here at St. Joseph Abbey wear black habits, but there are other Benedictine monks that wear white habits.

I envy your "warm" winters working bees. 30 degrees! The coldest day I ever worked with bees (loading them onto semi trucks headed to California Almond Pollination), 40 some years ago near Irrigon, Oregon. It was -15 with windchill -35. The hives were on pallets and we had to pry the pallets from the frozen ground in snow. #BalmyLouisiana

Buckets of cold water!? Its not cold until the bucket content is totally frozen and split the side of the container! We've been enjoying three days of 48-50 degrees (thanks to the South sending us some warmth) after Ian sending us six weeks or more of deep freeze.
We had that same cold front in Tucson too. We went to a wedding Friday night and there was no heat in the chapel. It was 24 degrees and we were freezing. God bless you for wrangling bees.

Mesquite Honey (Kiawe) was my main honey type of my 20 hives set up to control bees at hotel areas. Each of those 20 hives out 60 pounds in 2 weeks time, all year long.
@@markbaker9459 Yeah the Africanized bees make a lot of honey but are they not much more difficult to keep? I don't want to think someone died to bring me a bottle of Mesquite honey. I bet it has a smoky taste.

@@JJDigitalartStudio Aloha Joyce, in Hawaii, no AHB's [yet]. My Kiawe [Hawaiian name for Mesquite Honey] Forest Hives, we had 1560 pounds yield per hive per year. It needed to 'bee' harvested each 2 weeks or the comb would be ruined in the block of Crystalized Honeycomb. Had only 20 hives there but that was more than enough work. I only had a 2 frame, hand cranked extractor which quickly wore out and I motorized it.

But I have always wanted to visit Hawaii. ALOHA! I did not know that there were mesquite trees in Hawaii. I thought that was more a desert thing. Keep BEEing sweet.

My bees at other areas of North Kohala [I was blessed with 40,000 acres to place my recovered wild hives], gave 24 types of honey through our year. all, my dear wife Sharon had sold as quick as I could bottle it.

When you actually look properly at what those bees have done it's absolutely amazing keep up the great work and we had minus 3 this morning in Louth Lincolnshire England
Wow, what a sheet of bees. Great camera angles, must have been nice to have some room. Nice cold weather gear. 46 degrees today in Central NH, season high, since 12/13/21, bees flying, some pooping going on. Red maple buds not swelling yet. Thank you so much, Awesome, Peace, B

How do you know you aren't going to vacuum the queen up?
I take great pains not to, but I have vacuumed her up a number of times though. Each time she was OK, but still, I'd rather her safe in a cage and then released back. Just a p[personal preference. God's peace Karen.
