I don't think I've ever enjoyed so much schadenfreude at a film bombing. Evans getting the most laughs isn't surprising. He seems to be a genuinely nice guy with plenty of charm, so watching him embrace a bad guy role is fun to watch... usually.
@@JonathanLedbetter Don't want to speak for him but TV Tropes said he prefers working on projector and was having copyright issues with using lots of clips.
I actually thought from the trailer Dwayne WAS going to have that straight faced but optimistic characterization you described and I’m surprised that’s not what they went with. I think something like that can be comedy gold as seen in Airplane! Also, I can’t remember the name but there is a horror novel I came across recently that does take advantage of that one power you mentioned.
Dwyane Johnson doesn't feel like he's moved with the times in recent years and feels stuck in the 2010's -Black Adam was damaging to his brand [as he went from hyping himself as the new face of the DCU to being swiftly fired when it underperformed] and crawling back to Fast & Furious when that's outstayed it's welcome [with the next film confirmed to be the last] doesn't help. Bautista is certainly the more versatile wrestler turned actor but I would like to see Johnson step out of his comfort zone going forward [like doing a more dramatic role or playing a bad guy] as he feels like he's entering later Arnie territory at the moment.
Bro watching black adam again recently is so damning because the film feels like this vanity project to flex on his own ego. It's kind of gross honestly even though it's admittedly entertaining.
Honestly it was the Ezra Miller controversy that was the real dcu issue besides the movies being mediocre. Black adam takes a fall for an already dead universe strangely
Apparently this was originally intended as a streaming exclusive [like Johnson's 'Red Notice'] but was changed to a theatrical release [probably due to the size of the budget]. Given this will mainly end up being put on to keep kids busy at Xmas, the tonal shifts and general uninspired nature of the film doesn't bode well. This is meant to be a franchise starter [like most of Johnson's projects] but I'd be surprised if we get 'Red Two' . Certainly disappointing given how surprisingly entertaining the Jumanji films were [my parents in there 50's really enjoyed them which speaks to there universal appeal].
Great timing for me as well because I was just thinking of telling my friends who I had considered watching this with about how over-budget the movie is. And showing them WesSideLive’s take on that from here.
As a big fan of both The Rock and Chris Evans, I was thrilled when I first heard they were teaming up for a Christmas movie. But after watching the previews and their interviews, I’ve been feeling the same way you described-it’s just not hitting the mark. I’ve been wondering who the movie is meant for, especially with their choice of language during interviews for a holiday film. I’ve decided to skip it, though I wish them all the best! I still adore Jumanji, Knives Out, and Defending Jacob!
It's alright. I thought it was gonna be much crazier and funnier, it's just kinda wholesome Christmas film with some neat practical make up on some characters.
honestly, i liked this one - i went in expecting it to suck, and got a weird pastiche of '80s action films, a Hallmark channel film, a holiday movie, and some beautiful effects, and i just had a lot of fun with it - if i went in expecting it to be good i would have been disappointed it's a kid's movie that doesn't insult it's audience, but it doesn't really know if it's just for the kids or the parents ultimately it's forgettable with no memorable, quotable lines and will never be a classic, but i'd show it to my friends at a holiday watch party with the forewarning that it's not great, but it is fun
Sounds like if I want a Christmas themed movie with a hint of adult humor, I should stick to Spirited. At least that one has some nice musical numbers.
I think when *The Smashing Machine* comes out, all this convetor belt Dwayne Johnson action will be waffed away, at least somewhat Cause Johnson has stated he's looking for more serious and challenging roles
It’s baffling how Johnson is such a big star when so many of his films lately have been bloated in budget, low on box office, and quite unremarkably reviewed. His ego certainly seems to have garnered him a reputation that would’ve ended careers in eras past. I have grown tired of his movie star arrogance and awful attitude. His MEGA Heel run recently in WWE was spectacular, but he still wants to soak up all the glory for himself when you watch that WrestleMania 40 documentary,
In fairness he was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood in the 2010's for a reason so he has credit in the bank and this project was announced way back in October 2021 so his 2010's success was still fresh [to the extent it was reported at the time he was getting $50 million for it] but certainly he feels in decline both in popularity and image and his Ego isn't doing him any favours [similar to Vin Diesel's antics on Fast X]. In fairness as stated in the video, people working on this film have defended him but he does feel like late 90's Stallone+ Arnie [i.e. there pay and Ego is based on past successes rather than what there actually delivering and it's not going to last] and it's up to him to reinvent himself/turn it around.
"Walk Hard" and "Hot Rod" are both due, I think, for a critical re-evaluation. I think they're both keystones to modern comedy. As much as I loved The Rock back in the day, you go back to some of those old promos and they don't hold up at ALL. And I don't even mean the "offensive" stuff, I mean the stuff where you can tell he's either bored or not feeling confident. Those tend to be the ones where he REALLY leans on his "macho bullshit." I'd say between the failure of Black Adam and his rejection by pro-wrestling fans for Cody Rhodes, he probably IS feeling a bit insecure at the moment.
No one has hit Rock Bottom as much as Dwayne has over the last 6 years Hobbs and Shaw Red Notice which was terrible Black Adam which i retain wasn't the worst but lead to seismic changes that were inevitable at DC, and now this, the peak of just the worst Hollywood has to offer. Captain Midnight did a review or analysis of this and compared it to when in the olden days, bombs like this would trigger change and i hope to God this does. Rock waving his ego around has to die. The sad thing is, it won't, he'll still have Moana to hitch his ego to and will maybe make a billion so nothing changes, around we go.
The power to be able to hear people saying her name kinda feels like it was stolen from Harry Potter. They didn’t add it to the movies but in the books we found out that if you said Voldermorts name he could sense it. That’s one of the reasons they didn’t want to say his name.
To be fair to the movie, Krampus and Saint Nick stopped being partners ages ago. The two don’t go visit one another, they have a literal legal agreement on territorial issues to stay away from one another. So Gryla wouldn’t get any info about where Santa was from him because it’s literally been CENTURIES since they’ve worked together, and it’s also assuming Krampus would tell her exactly where he is, which isn’t a guarantee. On top of that, I have my own brother. I don’t know what he’s doing every single day, let alone every single week. We can go several weeks without actually seeing one another. It’s not unusual to not know where your brother is.
Krampus obviously knew though, because he shows up at the end. It's been implied all those characters have been around for centuries, and Santa is rather famously based at the North Pole.
Bad CGI only works in the dark, the rain, or broken fire sprinklers. And if you can't do that edit/throw the camera around so no one's eyes can focus. Meanwhile can't wait for the screaming parents upset thst this taught them about slap fighting.
When I saw the trailer for this movie I hoped for the best, but I had a feeling it was going to be disappointing. It's too bad. I will probably still see it, but I will wait for streaming.
I was at least hoping this would be so bad it's good, but it doesn't seem like most people were even having fun with this. Disappointing, given it feels like someone along the way was having some bugnutsy fun with this concept.
having grown up in the era of bad dwayne johnson family movies and not gotten around to watching the fast and the furious series yet, every time I see him in a movie I just assume the film is bad and skip it
I'd watch 'Hobbs & Shaw' as it's fairly stand alone and a pretty entertaining buddy movie with Idris Elba [villain] and Vanessa Kirkby [sidekick] being good support as long as you don't take it too seriously.
As much as this movie doesn't interest me that much, I can't help but appreciate the fact that other lesser known holiday figures like Krampus a moment in the HollyWood limelight.
Sounds like a superhero movie that acts like a Christmas movie. It’s tone problems and too much CGI Especially on the reindeers. Way to sum up the rest of the thoughts.
Remember that It’s A Wonderful Life initially bombed, and got the popularity it deserved only after it was allowed to lapse into the public domain so that it was run on TV only because it was free!
@ I understand but if you watch the trailer for this movie it’s very clearly a goofy over the top action comedy. I didn’t go in looking for character development or a meaningful storyline. I went in to watch the Rock and Captain America fight killer snowman in an attempt to to save Santa and that’s exactly what I got.
Best part of Red One? (aside from the Krampus creatures & puppetry) It was so bad that it brought Matthew back for another bad movie beatdown! Awful move, great review ( watch Klaus instead )
Die Another Day at least has decent action and a promising beginning before falling apart in the ice palace. I feel Red One won't get such a critical reevaluation over time due to its overlong length. Even Jingle All The Way gets a lighter touch than it should due to its brisk 90 minute runtime.
@@SergioMach7 Fair enough if other people like it but I really can't get onboard the 'Die Another Day is good actually' train as for me it's just got worse over time with the dated CGI, stupid sci fi plot and feeling very '2002' in general [Mission Impossible 2 is dated and OTT in a similar way but at least most of the action is practical]. Even Pierce Brosnan doesn't think much off it [there's a great clip of him recalling the infamous 'wind surfing' scene and him laughing hysterically!].
