I just watched Hellboy the crooked man a few days ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a pretty spooky witch horror film for sure. I will always love the first two Hellboy movies and the performance and the third one was solid, but this one is by far my favorite. I also really like Jack’s performance as Hellboy. He’s no Ron Pearlman, but I don’t think he was trying to be. He played the character very understated and subtle. He was more tragic, and I really appreciated that.

We Hellboy fans had it good through the 2000s. The Del Toro movies, the animated direct-to-video features. We were eating so good back then. What happened?
What happened was that the del Toro-movies sadly weren't that successful. They didn't bomb, but they were clearly not what the studio wanted. And then Iron Man and the Dark Knight were released the same year as The Golden Army and blew everything away. So no wonder there never was a third one. The animated ones were great too, but it was clear they wouldn't have a huge audience either.
If you're not gonna put any effort into a movie and are only making it to hang onto the rights, then what's the point? Name ONE time where doing this resulted in a good movie later down the road. The only one I can think of is Hellraiser Revelations leading to Hellraiser Judgement, and that's due to the weird production histories surrounding both films.
I'm one of those people who's STILL angry we got the 2019 film instead of the third Del Toro movie, and this just feels like a slap in the face, adding insult to injury. At least the 2019 film had the werecheetah going for it, and Harbor did an okay job, but this just looks and sounds "SyFy Original" levels of cheap.
2:54 - 3:12 It's sad when out films like Jonah Hex and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the only somewhat successful comic book adaptation is Brian Taylor's series about a cop turned hitman, played by Law and Order's Elliott Stabler, who has an imaginary flying blue unicorn sidekick voiced by Mark Patton, aka, *Happy!* This film's quality feels like those wrak direct to video sequels to flicks like 30 Days of Night, or R.I.P.D. which we also never asked for. If they wanna do a smaller scale Hellboy story, I have no problem, but maybe try for a tv series rather than a weak limited theatrical release.
In the comics it is quite usually like this actually, people all know Hellboy from newspapers and TV and are not frightened by him. This is still weird in this story, because this is a backwater rural forest with no connection to the outside world... But in their defense it was so in the comic too.
This a good movie, not mind blowing, not absolutely terrible . I like the smaller scale but the budget is definitely shows. That being said its got great atmosphere and I liked the hellboy actor
Great review. I think your great at picking apart bad films but also going into detail as to why they turned out the way they did which is very interesting.
What a shame, the trailer allready looke kind of problematic, though I still hoped we could get a well made low budget Hellboy revival. I would love to see an adaptation of "Hellboy goes to Hell" in the style of an Arthouse Film...
The biggest shame about the Hellboy Del Toro film is that it's not even a true adaptation of the comics, but it's popular among the general public who saw it and now assume Del Toro's take is "true" when it's really surface deep
Great review, very informative. How the mighty has fallen for this series, I see a future where we see more films in the franchise at this level like what happened with Hellraiser or Robocop TV movies, just like you said. Thanks Mathew 👍
10:20 I got that feeling from 'Expendables 4' which was mostly set in one location for the back half and compared to the earlier films it's cast [such as 50 Cent] felt very VOD level other than Statham+ Stallone [with the later's appearance being an extended cameo and neither show up on the DVD 'making off']. Like this, it feels like a 'straight to streaming' film and had no business being in cinemas. 12:27 Millennium Media seem to have declined even from there 2010's level to later Canon or Menahem Golan's successor studio '21st Century Film Corporation' which made films of the quality of 'Bullseye!', 1990's 'Captain America' and 'Death Wish 5'. 14:07 There is good movies that use Chapters [like 'Kill Bill' or recently 'Furiosa'].
Instead of rebooting Hellboy again, i wished we had Hellboy 3 in 2D. Ron perlman can do the demon's voice, Liz and Abe can be there too! We could see their kids, a new villain and the family fighting him. Add a few cute moments of the kids discovering their powers or playing with their father. Sounds more interresting and fun than what we got 🙂

Some people are saying this cost half that 20 million price tag.
It's a bit like how 'Expendables 4' supposedly had a $100 million budget when it looks like it was made for a quarter of that [it was filmed during covid, was in development hell for a while and Stallone+ Statham clearly got a decent Cheque but still...].
It's similar to how Expendables 4 supposedly cost $100 million and while there might be reasons for that [filming during covid, it was in development hell for a long time, Stallone+ Statham's salary] it feels more like it cost a quarter of that given how cheap it looks and the rest of the cast.
It would make sense in the way that people would be even less inclined to see a Hellboy-movie with a budget even lower than that, considering you need a lot of practical effects and CGI even if it's not on the same level as the del Toro-movies. Then again saying that it cost 20 mio. when it was way cheaper doesn't look too good from the pow of investors who then see an even bigger flop then it really was. Which is why movie studios normally tend to hide the true budget, especially by not including the marketing costs. This way a flop doesn't look that huge ... So who knows?
This definitely was making itself seem like an ashcan film for a studio that likely won’t know what to do with the property to make it profitable to begin with. The images and trailer I saw just looked dour and limp. The fact that the studio nixed a theatrical release in the US shows how little they thought of this, let alone put enough effort into it to make it a quality and exciting movie.
Die hard Hellboy fan here, and i freaking liked it! They nailed the comic books tone and Jack Kesy delivered one of the best Hellboy performances of all-time.
It's not. It's a damn near panel for panel adaptation of story it's based on. This film, if anything, will live on as a test to see who's actually familiar with Hellboy as a comic book character and who only knows him from Del Toros films
Any POS horro movie that takes place in the woods is an automatic pass for me unless it's Evil Dead or a parody like Tucker and Dale, I even hated The Blair Witch
I also enjoyed the fact that this movie stuck to one storyline. The 2019 Hellboy got a bit exhausting because it was trying to adapt like six different graphic novels. I appreciate this simplicity of the crooked man. Even though I don’t agree with your review, great video. I was enjoying seeing different peoples takes on projects.
@FilmBrain I guess it's the difference between a fans interpretation(Del Toro) vs. the artist's vision(Mignola). Mignola wasn't looking for joy when he wrote Crooked Man.
the point about nobody being bothered by hellboy's presence is faithful to the comics. basically, after the government announced his existence and the UN declared him to be legally human, the world just accepted him as utterly normal. it's a conceit, yes, but also the central conceit that makes the stories work. can't waste justifying his existence to the locals when he works a hundred cases per year.
I really liked pretty much all the casting choices and the esthetics of the Del Toro films, but felt both the scripts lacked real heft in a lot of ways and the editing was just weird and I found many of the editing choices were quite off-putting. I've seen the first film a few times and it always felt disjointed.
This is similar to the 1989 Punisher movie since that also skipped a theatrical run in America despite going to the big screen in several overseas markets. I haven't seen this new Hellboy movie, so I don't know how it would stack up to Dolph's lone time as Frank Castle, yet at least that movie at some good things going for it which includes a decent female villain.
Yeah, I've seen that. It isn't a great adaptation, but watchable as an actioner. In that case, the studio that made it went bust, which held up the US release.
Just watched it. I'm a Hellboy fan and I'd argue this is better than the 2019 version. This had lots of style that added to the atmosphere of the woods. Yes the cgi was bad (looking at you funnel spider fight) but worse was the editing. So many random things that never went anywhere. Why did the preacher have a deal with the crooked man? Why did the Asian lady not wear better clothing? (she would of been a kid through WW2, no way she won't dress proper after the racism of Pearl Harbor), why is the lucky bone bad then suddenly a good thing? How can the crooked man take a soul from hell against Satan's wishes? Why was the Asian lady suddenly crawling in a hole while in the mines? Why can she suddenly use powers? Why is their a forced love sub-plot? All that said it felt closer to the comic than the mess of the 2019 film.
As a fan of the comics and someone who had liked Del Toro's version of Big Red, I was somewhat interested in seeing this adapation, especially since it was originally drawn by the legendary underground cartoonist, Richard Corben, and it being Mike Mignola's (Hellboy's creator) favorite story that he's done with the character. Sad to hear from you and others online the film doesn't seem too good. Did they credit Corben in the credits btw? I'm not seeing his name credited anywhere online, though if the film is that bad maybe that's a good thing. I'd hope that his family got some money out of this, at least. I should say that the reason everyone is completely chill with Hellboy's appearance is because in the comics Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. have been known by the greater part of the world since the end of the WWII. Though, it sounds like the film doesn't establish that fact too well, other than the mention of Hellboy being on the cover of Life magazine (which was a fact taken from the original Crooked Man comic) and that the earlier, more well-known Del Toro films had it where Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. were a secret that no one knew about. I also checked the original Crooked Man comic again and there isn't any line or scene where Hellboy fights a snake and says, "Ok snake, let's rattle!" Plus, there wasn't any other B.P.R.D. agents in the story, other than Hellboy. I haven't kept up with some of the recent comics, but I know they did introduce a character who was a love interest for Hellboy. So, maybe the filmmakers felt they needed some sort of romance to appeal to a more mainstream audience? I don't know. Good review, Mathew!👏
Someone must tell Mignola to swallow his pride, return to Del Toro, and complete the original Hellboy trilogy. Neither of these reboots can hold a candle to the first 2 movies.
I'd be surprised if Del Toro would be interested now [particularly as so much time has passed] but certainly doing these reboots without him seems like a waste of time.
@chwenhoou it repapy wasn't bad tho, and it's way more comic accurate in tone and style. Heplboy wasn't an action comic it was very much cosmic horror and paranormal investigating. I actually really enjoyed it, its low budget is a flaw but I can over look that. Also I'm totally ok with this being self contained and not being an apocalypse event or huge grand story with a huge battle. This movie reminds me of the 2012 Dredd film, with its lower budget, more gritty tone, and being comic accurate
Considering the second movie isn't really a Hellboy movie, it's a GDT movie with Hellboy characters crudely inserted into it, I completely understand why Mike took the IP from GDT. It's not representative of the character in the comics. This reviewers issue that Hellboy is "just some guy" in the movie is a testament to that because that's how Hellboy is portrayed in the comics and even the most recent video game. In GDTs films he's presented like a temperamental toddler because red = angry lol
Have you read the comics? That's a terrible idea, regardless of whether or not you liked them the del Toro films failed financially and were not what Mignola had in mind when creating the character. The comics do a much better job of characterizing Hellboy, and if there were a director willing to accurately bring those stories to the big screen, as well as a studio willing to offer more than fifty cents, then they might actually have a major success
If this was done with better actors better cinematography and a better director, and about 5 times the budget, it could have been good. But the source material is quite lacking, too. I mean Hellboy kills the Crooked Man with one punch in the comic, and the witches and zombies are not much of a challenge for him either. I found this ultimately, pretty boring.
Never heard that there was a new movie. Pretty sure it wasn't shown in any cinema here in Germany either. But yeah, no wonder ... So thanks for introducing me to this piece of garbage. I guess most Hellboy-interested people will just find this when they look for the del Toro-movies on streaming-services or maybe even the 2019-version (which i'm still convinced cursed us with a certain virus). They will at least generate a little bit of money when people click on it out of curiosity. It pretty much looks like a movie just created to keep the rights, but considering we had a movie just five years ago that seems unlikely. But if it really was made for the rights then i'm asking WHY? I mean i can understand it with IPs that were successful in the past, but you want to wait a few more years for whatever reason untill making a new big installment. But even the beloved del Toro-movies sadly didn't make that much, 2019 was a desaster - and now they are throwing 20 million again in the garbage just for the chance to go on in the future? Is it realistic that there will be a blockbuster-Hellboy in let's say ten years? Not really ... But then again i'm clearly not as smart as those Millenium-executives. They clearly know what they are doing.
@@biguy617 its people like you who never let the past fade and never look forward to anything new. Or a new adaptaion. It's not a bad movie. The deltoro films arent perfect either.
I have to disagree. I loved the movie. So far, the best for me. But I am a big fan of the comics, and it seems the De Toro fans are the most unhappy with the movie. The people on the fan page I am on are mostly very happy with positive reviews. This movie is definitely made for the comic book fans. I think the B-movie treatment fits the story and the comic very well. Kesy's Hellboy is also closer to the comic for me. My new favorite. I feelpeople are complaining too much about budget and vfx. Marvel has created viewers who can't enjoy a movie if it is not shiny and overproduced. But tastes differ.😊
I feel you are being way too harsh on this film especially saying it's lesser compared to the last one, more people should give it a chance. It's not trying to ape the Del Torro films but recreate the comics, it's aiming for the horror that should be in a Hellboy film and on a fraction of the budget (which for me is worth supporting - it's not slap dash there is definitely care and respect for the property here.) This film felt the most like the comics than any of the other live versions, I love the first two films but Mignolia is right they never got the atmosphere right. For a low budget film apart from from a few ropey effects at the beginning and a bit to much of digital washed out colour correction added to it in the day time scenes (but worked well for the interiors and night scenes), it was shot beautifully at times, acted quite well and had the dirty and creepy feel it needed. People seem to just want to not like this because of the Del Torro films (which Again I also love) which is unfair. This was a well shot low budget comic horror film and to me could act as a great pilot for a well made limited series from the same creators. Seeing comments slagging it off without even seeing it is quite depressing, just using your unfair negative play by play of the film. Review it not recap it.
I wouldn't say I was play-by-playing plot points here. I have done that in some other reviews, but I'm more trying to talk about specific elements or sequences than the actual plot. As I said, a version like this would be great, if they were actually given the resources to pull it off properly. I do think people are viewing this more kindly because they're seeing it at home. On a cinema screen, all the flaws - especially the abysmal colour grading, and general dark appearance - are magnified. I'm glad it has found an audience, which appears to be mostly the die-hard fans of the comic, but it wasn't for me, IMO.
@@FilmBrain Mate that's fair enough and I see where you were coming from, that colour grade and opening effects did let it down a bit, I just thought it had far more positives than you gave it credit for. Just felt like a step in the right direction for the franchise and should be encouraged (lower budget, less risk of studio interference trying to 'sell it' better - Alien Romulus reeked of it and all the worse for it) - also it's not just Marvel or DC there are so many comics out there that are not just superhero fodder (for me I think comic properties should be going in the limited series direction anyway and away from the cinema - comics themselves are episodic in nature just fits better - a lot of the Marvel series' have been far better than a lot of the recent films) but saying it was worse than the last film was a bit too much for me - rubbed me the wrong way. There was way more artistry and vision to this one, the del Torro films introduced me to the comics, seemed a shame to knock this film down for being more comic and less del Torro. Cheers for replying though much appreciated
Compared to some things bigger studios have released recently the “bad visuals” really aren’t that bad the movie looks fine and guys Del Toro made 1 ok Hellboy film and turned his character into a love struck puppy that stalks his love interest from the roof tops instead of doing anything important TLDR; the new hell boy movie is great and I love it
I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what you say at 6:48 I can tell you haven't read the comics (also, I don't think that line "let's rattle" is from the comics either). You probably think what Del Toro did is peak potential of Hellboy's character development... him being immature, secluded in a government facility, mystically surrounded by kitties. Oh, and the twins, I wonder what happened to the twins...! You probably think too that Ron Pearlman as the great actor he is created Hellboy's personality, he came out with that stuff out of thin air without considering the source material... so whenever someone sounds like Hellboy, for you they are doing a Ron Pearlman's impression.
u can tell he hasnt read the comics ? damn its almost like he even actually says it in the video that he doesnt know the comics... and FYI fwk the comics, nobody gives a sh1t about comics and definetly not the average viewer of movies.
@@kingvejita8827 That's too bad because the Hellboy comics are so much better than the movie adaptations. But it matters for a review, if the reviewer says for example "the new actor is doing a Ron Pearlman impression", when most of what Ron Pearlman did was already in the comics. So when something in the new movie adaptation resembles the comic an ignorant reviewer would say "the new guy is doing a Ron Pearlman impression" instead of "Hellboy does that in the comics, he's not a clown like in the 2019 film".

''it needed a bigger budget'' nah , if this is what u make with a small budget than why should u get a bigger one ? its not the props, makeup or whatever that made this movie shit, its the story and the events in it... u can look at an old movie and say ''the effects are the worst thing about it but that was the period it was made in'' and u can also say ''what ? this really was made in xx ? cant believe it, it looks so good for its time period''
I loved all the Hellboy movies (they are fun) but this 1 was just... kinda boring and a waste of time (i watched the animated ones after this 1 hoping they were better but meh, if this is a 5 those are a 5.1 and 5.2) i dont care that it had a small budget or about who ever plays Hellboy as long as he looks the part, they just could have done it much better with what they had
Kill that guy in the 1st scene and not even a single word about it ? (i get what the job is but fudging hell it just comes off as obvious canon fodder) what the fudge are this accents ? half the time i cant understand what the fudge they are saying (i know i wont be the only 1) the thing with the witch telling us what a ''witch ball'' is was just... WHY ? it was so out of nowhere and i cant even remember if we saw that old witch again
The crooked Man just wasnt that creepy and scary, we should have only seen his silhouette and shadow/blurr, after we see his face he does that neck thing so many times its like ''wow isnt it scary and creepy?'' and no it just comes of as a kid doing weird things trying to scare other kids
The chick... what was the point of her being in this movie ? what did she contribute to the story ? she goes into the tunnels to destroy them and make the crook weaker but she fails and ends up saved by a d34d Man (and u cant tell me that she succeded cuz there is no sign that the crooked man got weaker) ''she looks at the spider'' rawr ! ''looks away'' pause ''looks again at the spider'' RAWR ! wtf was that ? the spider that was hyperactive and murderous in the 1st part was just standing there and making noises
What was the point of the mother ? she was just there , he doesnt save her or get any clues about where she might be or why he was born, its just a waste of screen time... the zombie fight was just lame and a turn off and the final fight... whats there to say about it ? Underwhelming as hell !

@@DinoDave150 buddy this movie is the most comic accurate but whatever
What happened was that the del Toro-movies sadly weren't that successful. They didn't bomb, but they were clearly not what the studio wanted. And then Iron Man and the Dark Knight were released the same year as The Golden Army and blew everything away. So no wonder there never was a third one.
The animated ones were great too, but it was clear they wouldn't have a huge audience either.
Hellboy reboot 1, Neil Marshall. Hellboy reboot 2, Brian Taylor. Next Hellboy reboot, Kurt Wimmer..?
God, I hope not.
XD XD XD The Beekeeper was not so bad....
Uwe Boll's recently come out of retirement so maybe he'll helm the next reboot!
Uwe Ball does Leprechaun reboot vs Hellboy for Sci-Fi TV channel.
This must have been a money laundring scheme.
This is basically like when Fox did a Fantastic Four reboot huh
@@emobuddha nope.
Not at all. But if you are a fan of the comic books this movie is not for you
I'm one of those people who's STILL angry we got the 2019 film instead of the third Del Toro movie, and this just feels like a slap in the face, adding insult to injury.
Happy (the unicorn) was voiced by Patton Oswalt, not Mark Patton.
In the comics it is quite usually like this actually, people all know Hellboy from newspapers and TV and are not frightened by him. This is still weird in this story, because this is a backwater rural forest with no connection to the outside world... But in their defense it was so in the comic too.
How is it they managed to make an even WORSE Hellboy movie than the 2019 reboot, especially one based on a well-known comic arc?
By selecting a subpar director to helm it and giving him pocket change to work with. That's how.
This movie is realy good actually.
If you think this was worse than that horrible POS from 2019 you really know nothing about Hellboy at all LMFAO
@@tomgu2285 I agree, I enjoyed it - has it's flaws but otherwise well done
This a good movie, not mind blowing, not absolutely terrible . I like the smaller scale but the budget is definitely shows. That being said its got great atmosphere and I liked the hellboy actor
I didn’t know this movie existed until I saw your video right now
They turned Hellboy into an Asylum film? 😢
Problematic??? LOL who talks like that? Silly person
The biggest shame about the Hellboy Del Toro film is that it's not even a true adaptation of the comics, but it's popular among the general public who saw it and now assume Del Toro's take is "true" when it's really surface deep
I'm mad with this Crooked movie because its a TV episode which I paid full movie ticket price to watch, a bad one at that.
At this point, it would be better to do a Hellboy TV series rather than a movie.
I do random Wikipedia searches on the daily, and that’s how I came across this “thing” while exploring Hellboy.
I looked up the 2019 film on wiki randomly and that's how I came across it!
Moral if you want a good hellboy movie call Guillermo Del toro and Ron pearlman
I'd believe it.
What a wasted opportunity
Die hard Hellboy fan here, and i freaking liked it! They nailed the comic books tone and Jack Kesy delivered one of the best Hellboy performances of all-time.
Holy $#!t FilmBrain, now there's a name I have not seen in ages.
Good to know he's still around.
A comic book film this year that is worse than Madame Web. I find that hard to believe.
I don't.
It's not. It's a damn near panel for panel adaptation of story it's based on. This film, if anything, will live on as a test to see who's actually familiar with Hellboy as a comic book character and who only knows him from Del Toros films
That's because it's not, it's more a situation of you drinking the kool aid
Any POS horro movie that takes place in the woods is an automatic pass for me unless it's Evil Dead or a parody like Tucker and Dale, I even hated The Blair Witch
I also enjoyed the fact that this movie stuck to one storyline. The 2019 Hellboy got a bit exhausting because it was trying to adapt like six different graphic novels. I appreciate this simplicity of the crooked man. Even though I don’t agree with your review, great video. I was enjoying seeing different peoples takes on projects.
Not sure "sense of joy" was the sense they were looking for.
A dark film can have a sense of creativity to it. You can tell Del Toro is having fun.
@FilmBrain I guess it's the difference between a fans interpretation(Del Toro) vs. the artist's vision(Mignola).
Just stick to del toro's movies forget the 2019 reboot and this one
Nevaldine and Taylor never should have broken up
This is similar to the 1989 Punisher movie since that also skipped a theatrical run in America despite going to the big screen in several overseas markets.
You deserve a raise
All that said it felt closer to the comic than the mess of the 2019 film.
muh racism
You do god's work reviewing this
Who asked for this?
Millennium's rights lawyers.
Yup. I would love to know how Del Toro's version of Hellboy ends...
Mr film brain
Would love to hear your thoughts on the substance
If you have time…?
I dont know why.. but i loved this movie
This movie has some of the worst dialogue and special effects I’ve seen all year
The gate for this movie is so forced lol
I can’t be the only one who think Perlman is overrated AF
I only heard about this in the last week and assumed it was an animation. Is this really live action?
Yes, it very much is.
Yo, this came out??
It's dead weight for a reason 😂
I refuse to watch this movie. #BringBackDelToro The Cinematography looks so bland and dull.
@@biguy617 its people like you who never let the past fade and never look forward to anything new. Or a new adaptaion. It's not a bad movie. The deltoro films arent perfect either.
I loved it
I have to disagree.
Compared to some things bigger studios have released recently the “bad visuals” really aren’t that bad the movie looks fine and guys Del Toro made 1 ok Hellboy film and turned his character into a love struck puppy that stalks his love interest from the roof tops instead of doing anything important
TLDR; the new hell boy movie is great and I love it
Wtf 😂😂😂😂😂
Returning to your channel every year just to see how far your hairline has receded.
Do you like the disaster film day after tommorow that was a good movie that had realism and involving drama and emotions and wasn’t entirely ridiculous what do you have to say to that?
Underwhelming as hell !
theres nothing wrong with this film or acting and ill take this over the last 3 shitters,
The real Crooked Man is Mike Mignola, who vetoed a 3rd GDT film in lieu of 2 low rent reboots. His disdain for the 2 good HB films is baffling
Is there a source for Mignola vetoing a 3rd Del Toro film? I've never heard that piece of info.
@@jikorijo4516 no source. Just GDT fans not being able to cope with the fact that Perlman is 74 Selma Blair has MS and the studios do not want to fund a Hellboy 3
I suppose Mignola not liking the Del Toro films is a bit like Tom Clancy's disliking the two Harrison Ford-Philip Noyce Jack Ryan films despite them being well received critically [he felt Ford was too old for the part for example].
Mike doesn’t even own the rights of Hellboy movies, but he vetoed a third Del Toro film, right. Internet people are something. 😂
This is more accurate then the deltoro movies and it realy isn't bad at all what are you talking about?
