Hey Justin, thank you for sharing all this information; your channel has been really helpful for me. I'm curious to learn more about the play state. I searched your channel for a video about it, but is it called something else? Do you have any videos about the safety plus activation or play state?

I don't have much on play. But, I discuss it on my site in the blog and in my free ebook also Start here - www.justinlmft.com/post/traumapvt8

    Hi Justin, me again.
I’m tempted to buy your polyvagal course as I am still very confused about how it all ties together, but I really need to make sure it will help my understanding as $150 is a lot of money for me right now.
I just don’t understand how the safety state ties in with the polyvagal hierarchy, which is always presented as being predictable.
As an example metaphor - if someone is on a riverbank, a pretty bleak place (shutdown), and they want to get to the other side which looks much nicer (ventral), they need to cross a frothy river first (sympathetic). In PVT, as someone leaves shutdown, apparently the next step is fight and flight.
But, if they’re exhausted with no capacity they won’t have the energy to cross the river. They need some safety. Maybe a boat of some sort.
But, as I understand it, according to the polyvagal model that safety boat (the ventral state) is out of reach. It’s on the other side of the frothy water.
So i don’t understand how the idea of first needing to find safety in any way jives with the polyvagal hierarchy.
Seems like a complete paradox to me - ‘to cross this river you need a boat, but the boat is on the other side of the river’
Sorry for the long message, but I wonder if your course clarifies this? Trying to figure out this theory is jamming my mind!

      Hey!
      1. The Polyvagal 101 information is also available for free on my podcast. Listen to episodes 101-109. It's a deep dive, and you don't need to spend $150. I also have something called the Total Access Membership, which is a subscription, that might be more cost-effective. It gives you access to all my courses and my community, and that includes the Polyvagal 101 course. Go here to learn more - www.justinlmft.com/totalaccess
      2. To answer your question - I (and others) talk about these states in very cartoony or one-dimensional terms. Saying someone exists in a shutdown state doesn't mean they are 100% in that state. In reality, they also have some level of safety in their system. If one can sit still and learn from a TH-cam video, they exist in the mixed state of stillness, which is both shutdown and safety together. Point being - the Polyvagal states are always active to varying degrees throughout the day. The question then becomes - How do I increase my safety state activation? Once one can do so, then their body will be able to self-regulate, welcoming back flight/fight activation, then using it. And then anchoring more deeply into safety. (I teach these processes in Building Safety Anchors and in Unstucking Defensive States)

Hi Justin, really appreciate the response.
Thanks for the idea of signing up to the whole package to save some money. I think I’ll try and do that, as I’m still missing something. I have listened to your PV 101s before, and revisited most of them over the past week, including the one on trauma. It’s great that you have so much free content, and I wish I could say I understand things better but I still don’t unfortunately.
I just don’t see why this is presented as a strict hierarchy if someone can access their ventral state from the bottom of the ladder. I’ve been told *so* many times that the way to ventral is up through fight/flight, through the trauma response, and that this is predictable, and one of the foundations of the whole theory. I feel like I’m also being told that no, you just need to step to the side, you don’t need to process your fight/flight response to get to ventral.
Anyway, sorry to ramble on. I don’t know why I find this so confusing; no one else seems to have these questions! Hopefully see you on your site at some point.
