    Last Surprise is arguably the most iconic Persona battle theme other than Mass Destruction. The song is just so catchy thanks to Lyn’s vocal delivery and there’s nothing more satisfying in P5, than doing an All-out Attack right as the chorus hits. The only reason I can think of for Last Surprise having only one Patreon request, is that everyone thought it already had a bunch of requests.

    The thing I love about this song is that the lyrics really encapsulate what a turn based game is going for.
    "My mind is too fast for eyes."
    All that time deciding what to do? That's an instant in the perspective of your enemies. It's amazing.

  • @Mrinsecure

    Given that this is the primary combat theme for Persona 5, it is very important to enjoy this song, because I assure you, you will hear this *a lot* going through the game. You will hear Lyn telling you that YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING when you fall asleep at night, when you wake up (get up, get out there) in the morning, and when your thoughts idly drift through the day. It is utterly relentless, but it's so awesome I still didn't get fully tired of it, even after multiple playthroughs.

    I do find it a bit funny that you only had one request for this song, Jesse. As far as I know, tons and tons of people do in fact love this song. I purposely did not request this song when I first found your channel- even though I freaking love it- because I thought multiple requests for it were inevitable. It seemed like such an obvious pick given all the Persona 5 requests you have received. Seems that was not the case though lol.
    This song just has an energy that is easy to love. That chorus really does hit strongly, I agree. In regards to wondering if "Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There" is related to this song, I don't believe so. That song is actually the opening theme for the game, while this song, "Last Surprise", is the regular battle theme of the game. I would say "Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There" is more related to "Life Will Change", at least thematically, and they even directly reference each other in the lyrics.
    Really glad you enjoyed this, and also looking forward to you hearing more obscure Persona 5 songs down the line.

    Wake up, Get up, Get out there is the main menu theme for original Persona 5. Last Surprise is the main battle theme for normal encounters in both original P5 and in Royal, but in Royal Last Surprise was replaced by Take Over specifically when ambushing enemies. Imo, the best songs you still haven't heard from Persona 5 are in order of my favorite to least favorite...
    1. Throw Away Your Mask - Final boss theme of Royal. Since you said spoil away, the really cool thing about this song is the lyrics are from the PoV of the antagonist. It's basically his formal argument for why it's morally right for the heroes to give up. This song gives me chills because it's so sweet sounding but there's a profound sinister undertone when you understand the specifics of what it's really saying. It's basically the opposite of Wake up, Get up, Get out there. They could have just as easily titled it Don't wake up, Don't get up, Don't get out there.
    2. I Believe - This is the Life Will Change of the final section of Royal, playing at the beginning of the end just before Throw Away Your Mask. This song is symbolic of the heroes finding their resolve to see their beliefs through till the end as you only get to hear it after a gut wrenching scene where you have to make a hard choice to not give up.
    3. Demiurge II: Negai - Final boss theme of Strikers. Just a really fun track that hypes you up during the fight.
    4. Jaldabaoth - Final boss theme of original Persona 5. It goes hard for an instrumental.
    Also worth noting we're getting another game, Persona 5 Tactica, in November. There's also a rumored Persona 5 Arena that's all but confirmed. I'm sure both of those games are gonna have some new banger tracks just like Strikers did so expect some new P5 requests in a few months.

    • @WoopPrime
      @WoopPrime ปีที่แล้ว

      How accurate is that rumor for P5 Arena? Pls don't give me hope 😭

    • @Laurcus
      @Laurcus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WoopPrime The dude that leaked it also leaked Tactica and P3 Reload so I'd say it's pretty likely. Now that doesn't mean it's guaranteed, because the leaker could be both truthful and correct and that still wouldn't guarantee anything, since game dev projects get cancelled all the time, but I think it's a reasonable assumption that P5 Arena is at least in the works.

  • @blackromeoKOK
    @blackromeoKOK ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Persona 5 is unique in terms of it's soundtrack. Unique in that some of the songs are sung in a specific way. They're sung from the perspective of the PC, the playable characters that we control.
    Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There is a rallying cry, it's the characters trying wake up the players. Getting them in the mood to fight the everyday corruption in society. Wake Up is about how life won't change if we do get up and change it. The first verse is about all the lies we're told that break us down, and how it's useless to resist it. But the hook says we can. We need to raise our voice against the liars, we need to swat lies in the making. And then asks why does nobody want change, because they aren't fighting for it.
    Last Surprise is the PC talking to the enemy. Warning them...taunting them. You'll never see us coming, but we'll get you. You think you have a plan to stop us, but we're two steps ahead. You think you're prepared for our arrival, but a lightning strikes your last resolve. I like the word play there, also playing into difficulty of saying English sentences for non native speakers.
    Life Will Change is more a direct continuation of Wake Up Get Up Get Out There. Life Will Change has lines from Wake Up, commenting on that sentiment, but then it adds a line of positivity and hope. Life Will Change, because we got up. This song is also from the perspective of the PC but it's directed to the Bosses. "We're coming for you to disrupt your corruption." That's the message of that song.
    Rivers In The Desert....my favorite song, is directed at...the big Boss. I don't want to explain more than that because of spoilers...but it's a personal Boss that's all I'll say. And the message of the song is "fighting you will be difficult, damn near impossible. To beat you we'd need a miracle...a last Ace in a lost hand. But miracles is what we do, we create Rivers In The Desert."
    The songs are definitely connected in the sense of rebellion against a corruption system, and drive to rub it in the face of said system.

    Last Surprise is in my top 5 for best standard battle themes in RPG video games as a whole. In my over 3 decades of video gaming, with RPGs as my favorite genre, I have heard hundreds of standard battle themes and this one is easily top 5, maybe even top 3. My favorite part is the beat drop right before the chorus starts. Lyn singing "You'll never see it comiiiiin'~" without the beat behind her starting out and then having the hard instrumental during the rest of the chorus is so damn good.

    I'm sure others have commented this, but Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There is the song for the opening cinematic (before the main menu) of the game, and Last Surprise is the standard battle theme, so they actually don't play too close together, there's a solid chunk of time before you hear Last Surprise. Oh, and the difference between P5 and P5 Royal is that Royal is mostly the same game with a bunch of extra content. Below is some other highlights from the game, and I know this isn't a formal request or anything, just putting them on your radar/recommending them to others who may not have played the game.
    For "hype" songs you haven't heard, Colors Flying High, I Believe", and Throw Away Your Mask are probably the other big ones. Swear to My Bones is what I'd put next on that list, but it's a hugely different vibe from most of the hype songs. Oh, and if you listen to Throw Away Your Mask, look for the edit that has Keep Your Faith in it as well - the two songs play sequentially in-game, and they use the same melody but different instrumentation and Throw Away Your Mask has vocals, so it kind of feels like they're meant to be together.
    I'm also quite fond of Gentle Madman, though that isn't a hype song and isn't quite your usual fare. I would kind of compare it to The Days When My Mother Was There in terms of mood/tempo, but they're not really the same genre. Others that you'll probably see are A Woman, a very interesting piece stylistically, Ark, an overall solid piece with a neat vibe, Hoshi to Bokura to, the P5 counterpart to P5 Royal's Our Light (both play during the credits of the true ending of the games, both are in Japanese. If you listen to Hoshi to Bokura to, you need to listen to Swear to my Bones first, though - they share a lot of commonality and Hoshi to Bokura to builds on Swear to my Bones), and Butterfly Kiss and Layer Cake are a couple of huge vibe songs. There are others, of course, the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal, well worth a purchase if you like VGM, but those spring to my mind immediately.

    This song is quite popular so I've heard this before lol, it's been in my collection for quite some time. Was my favorite Persona song for awhile.
    The groove here is outstanding and the bass is movin', love the tone, it sounds clean. The vocals are great as expected and the strings are an underrated star here, what I like about the song is the context. It's a battle theme and reminds me of what Alex Moukala said that the theme is the Phantom Thieves (main party) saying to their enemies "good luck, you're pretty much done for" but in a very snazzy and stylized way. The oohs remind me a bunch of the a similar section in Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up.
    This song is just a good groovy time.

    Ah, the song that they use for standard battles.
    I mean it's an amazing song, but it kinda starts to get a bit repetitive by like hour 60+ especially if you do a lot of grinding in the dungeons. So you will be hearing the beginning of the chorus *a lot*
    Still the hook is always great, and people meme the "you will never see it coming" all the time to random persona announcements and the like.

    I've been waiting for this to finally come up. One of my favourite things about this song is that it's a standard battle theme and the lyrics are actually about how absolutely screwed random encounter enemies are when they run into the party.
    I bet the main reason there was only one request is that it's so popular in the fandom that anyone making requests would think "oh, surely he already has a ton of requests for Last Surprise, so I won't waste my request on that, I'll use it for a less popular track that I love"

    I think that the reason that your backlog only had 1 request for this song is because people thing "surely he already has about 100 requests for one of the most iconic songs of the game, so I'll request a more obscure one that I like"... Which in turn makes almost no one request it, in this case, a single person.

    Can we campaign to have Uncle Jesse pick up Persona 4 or 5 on Steam and do a playthrough of those like he did with the Final Fantasy games? Sooooooo much music he's going to fall in love with.

    I'm guessing it didn't get requested much because it's so popular that people assume it's already been requested, or focusing more on lesser known gems.

    3:23 the bass player doesn't exist, I'm pretty sure. The bass present in all Persona 5 OST is a Spectrasonics Trilian VST preset

    There’s plenty left from P5 and its spin offs, especially if you count remixes. I suspect that you’ll have an influx of requests for persona 3 music early next year though once P3Reload drops

    As a vouch to play persona 5, it may be long, but its a type of long you dont have to commit to. You can play an ingame day and turn off the game after 2 minutes. If you have the time you can play for longer
    Its also chill most the time so is a relaxing thing to do

    Wait- how- really-
    I cannot believe this is your first listen to Last Surprise. It’s easily the most iconic track from the P5 franchise, with WUGUGOT photo-finishing second.
    And no, nobody BUT nobody sleeps on the bass in this song.
    For context, this is the fight song for Vanilla P5, which is also in non-ambush attacks in Royal (which, if you play the game correctly, you don’t hear nearly as frequently). “You never see it coming” is pretty metatextual, because that first time around, you definitely never saw this coming.

    You could always watch the anime of these games if you don't want to play them! Would make seeing the story at your own pace quite a bit easier and less of a commitment:)
    They aren't as good as the source material but they follow the story close enough and have some nice character moments that make them worth it. Plus there's some anime specific music~ lol😂
