Layer Cake plays in the shop where you buy your equipment, though it's specifically an airsoft gun shop. Butterfly Kiss plays at the clinic where you buy medicine, so if this was a random pair up, you somehow landed on a very good pairing lmao
Layer Cake = airsoft gun shop ran by an ex-yakuza Butterfly Kiss = a medical clinic + pharmacy ran by a hot goth doctor Some of the best shop themes in gaming history.
I love how Layer Cake kind of mirrors the experience in game. It's a shady looking store in a back alley with a rough looking character running the place, and then he turns out to be chill and runs a nice shop.
These are both shop themes. Yes, I'm serious. Layer Cake probably refers to the movie of the same name, because the owner of the shop it plays in is basically selling illegal weapons, so it has sort of a criminal vibe to it. Butterfly Kiss is for a clinic, so it has a "healing" association. And as far as I know these songs don't have any other versions. The setting is basically a big section of Tokyo, and... a sort of "other dimension" called the Metaverse. School is only a part of it. It also does have traditional JRPG movement and collecting stuff on the field, as well as a bunch of dungeons you explore in a normal JRPG way.
Remember Jessie, when it comes to 100+ hr games, songs can become popular by either playing at very pivotal moments or by playing a lot 😂. Both of these are the latter. Also I'll happily be the 99,999 person to recommend you play Persona 5, even if you don't stream it, it's an experience, I hope the "school" aspects of it don't dettered you too much, their not that deep. It's just like...the bottom layer of a cake 😊.
School is like a second home to students in Japan, since it's common for students to hang around school even after class is over, so it's like a central hub of sorts for the characters to interact with one another. However in P5 you have several major areas in Tokyo to visit and walk around in, so while the school YEAR is a central focus of the narrative since that's how time passes, the school itself is not as important as you seem to believe. Both of the songs you heard are prime examples of this as they're shop themes one is in Shibuya (the place with the massive crosswalk all the tourists go to) and the other is in a much smaller district not too far from where the main character lives.
I love Layer Cake because not only is the name a description of Iwai (affectionately named Gun Dad from here on out) as a person, but the song itself is a character study on him. It begins spooky and uneasy and intimidating, much like how he presents himself. Dude's an ex-yakuza running a shady airsoft shop. He's kind of hard to approach. Then the grove sets in and you realize Gun Dad's kinda chill actually once you get to know him, but there's still some rough edges. You've taken off the first layer of the cake, but you're still thinking he might have killed someone before. Then, when the chorus starts it's more what you'd expect from a Persona character theme and shows who he is in regards to his kid and just how much of an utter bro Gun Dad is when you've gotten past his masks (heh) that he puts up. It's so good.
Fun Fact: Butterfly Kiss is Meguro-san's personal favorite Persona 5 track. This is what he said about it: “This is my personal favorite track in Persona 5. It starts in a quadruple rather like an irregular meter, then turns into triple meter in the chorus, but while the meter goes back in the bridge the rhythm stays at triple meter. It’s a strange track, but I think that its feminine melody expresses Takemi’s feelings well.” (Meguro)
I like to think that the song is called "Layer Cake" because of the owner, on the outside and from the way he behaves, you would think he's a heartless person, but in reality, he also has feelings of his own, even if he likes to hide it, so he just has different layers, ones that he doesn't show most people.
I really like Layer Cake, never understood why it was called that, but didn’t look it up for some reason either. The kind folks in the comments section are very informative as usual though!
@@carsongarcia1049 It may be a reference to the movie Layer Cake where Daniel Craig plays a man involved in the criminal underworld. It would make sense in an ex Yakuza's shop
Butterfly kiss has the persona leitmotif at 9:38. Those three notes can be heard in Full Moon Full Life from Persona 3 Reload, Swear to my bones from Persona 5, Heaven from Persona 4 and a bunch of others. The leitmotif started in Persona 2 and has been used since.
What's interesting about Layer Cake, is that while it plays in the shop. The shop itself is in the back alley of one of the more populated shopping districts in Shibuya. The clerk doesn't trust anyone who's an amateur when it comes to wares so that rising tension at the very start is him being suspicious. The song then goes into a mellow tone showing that he trusts the customer, but when the song picks up it shows that the player is more invested in making a purchase... It has layers to it.
Persona always had a strong vibe and personality music wise in the video-game industry. Never played them, but damn those OSTs are sooo good. Mohmega's remixes of them are playing in repeat on my phone x) That day when mother was there !!!
If you want some more intense "boss battle" songs from P5, I highly recommend Throw away your mask, Jaldabaoth, Rivers in the Desert (I think you have listened to this one), Keeper of Lust, Prison Labor or Blooming Villain.
Man P5 throws in some bangers in the most unexpected places. Layer Cake plays in the Airsoft gun shop where you buy your firearms (fake guns work as real guns in the area where you can fight don't question it) from a shady ex-yakuza that is actually a pretty nice guy, meanwhile Butterfly Kiss plays in the clinic where you buy medicine from an uncomfortably hot goth doctor lady that also uses you as a guinea pig (best girl, you know I'm right).
While people often tend to focus on the vocal themes, most of Persona 5's soundtrack is instrumental, and as you can tell based on the fact that these are shop themes, those instrumental tracks are essential for setting the overall vibe of the game. I mean, when you can even jam out while buying healing items, it shows how much it's dedicated to the funky/groovy aesthetic.
Layer cake is the theme for the weapon shop. You buy toy guns and weapons and they work like real weapons in the "metaverse" which is when the characters battle and take the appearance of thieves
Layer Cake plays in the airsoft gun shop (you buy model guns but use them as real guns, it's complicated) run by a man called Iwai. I always interpreted the name as referring to his personality, like he has 'layers' - he comes off intimidating and scary but once you get to know him he's a kind and cool guy, as reflected by the way the song transitions from the very tense intro to the cool and chill rest of the track. And yeah all the Persona games involve high school settings though it's not as major a part of the game as you think. Your character and your party are all high school students but most of the actual gameplay is in the after school hours where you go on isekai escapades fighting monsters lol
It's not 1-to-1 but the opening of Layer Cake functions as a callback to SMT1 Chaos Theme. It fits so well in its inclusion and subversion as the song progresses.
11:50 the reason you can is cause this is also used in a lot of songs and the one youre thinking of is the ending song from persona 5 with the stars and us
As others have said, these are indeed shop themes. One of the songs, I forget which one, plays in a pharmacy where you get medicine to use in the Metaverse. The doctor there is known as "The Plague".
earlier this year in a marbles stream, I won a song request and i asked for Layer Cake and you said you hadn't heard it yet so you couldn't play it. Glad you finally got to it.
I prob posted this before but Layer Cake 100% motivated me to get off my ass, buy a new bass (a like mid-range Yamaha 5 string) and get back on the wagon. I was more into playing like old school metal like Celtic Frost but it opened me up to playing a lot of jazz/blues and just other VGM!
NO SPOILERS: Layer Cake is a description of the violent and dark layers of organized crime (according to Reddit). Think Yakuza or Mafia. Butterfly Kiss is a gesture of affection, where you flutter your eyelashes against either the skin or other persons eyelashes. Kinda like an Eskimo kiss, it does not always mean it is romantic, but could also be a sign of care and/or family-like love toward the recipient. The song titles in P5 tend to tip you off to things in-game which helps with the world-building, which goes without saying that P5 does EXTREMELY well. Hope this helps!
In Persona games you play as a Japanese high schooler that gets sucked into some supernatural shenanigans. Persona 5 specifically takes place in Tokyo and you can visit places like Shibuya and Akihabara outside of school. Half the game is like a student simulator where you go to class and then can spend your free time in the city doing various activities or spending time with friends. The other half of the game you go into some sort of supernatural world that varies depending on the game, and that's where the RPG gameplay happens where you battle enemies and complete dungeons and stuff.
Two of easily my favourites p5, when I first got my bass Butterfly Effect was the first i learnt to play, also if you want final boss energy (and I’m surprised you haven’t yet) Yaldaboath
You should absolutely consider doing shop themes for a future VGM vibes, this is only reminding me just how many amazing shop themes exist in gaming. Certainly a unique theme.
I know you said you'll probably never play this game. But if you ever get too curious there is a short demo for the introduction portion of this game. I say it's worth checking out and perfect for a possible short 15-20min video!
Ok you wanna know what boss music is like someone's gotta put in a request for Blooming Villain and its variants from the spinoffs. Edit: Also youve heard most of the songs with vocals from base game/Royal. From hear out most new P5 songs are gonna be instrumental
The games not really ‘about’ high school so much, rather it’s a common setting due to the main characters being teenagers. Without going into detail on the chance you do decide to play it, the characters basically live double lives where they have to maintain their day to day student lives while also fighting corruption as phantom thieves that can invade peoples unconscious minds (P5 specifically, the others follow a different plot but thematically and mechanically they function the same). It’s basically like any anime where the MC is still in school but has to deal with dangerous and fantastical problems outside of it
0:29 that's cause these are from.the original version of persona 5 that came out 8 years ago, and ig at this point people just assume you listened to the whole persona OSTs
The School is important for like 1 chapter of the story. Afterwards you still go to school (as teenagers do) but the relevance of the school to story and gameplay highly diminishes, although it still has some moments. Some characters that are with you in school will stay or become important later though.
The sound of having to grind guts - layer cake. oh and persona is half school sim walk around town, build up your rank with characters. The other half is dungeon crawls, bosses, type matchup style rpg elements.
I'm surprised no one has supplied you with Blooming Villain or Jaldabaoth considering you've been asking for edgier stuff... heck even With the Stars and Us, the ending credits music, has quite a bit of teeth to it. It seems to me like people never request or listen to that either because a) it's considered too special to the ending of the game itself or 2) it's just kind of unpopular, but I mean, Lyn pulls out ALL the stops on that one, and it certainly has its... RECOGNIZABLE elements... hehehe
For those who know, isn't it funny that during the video and during Butterfly kiss there is the name of a subscriber (I think) called "Angel of death"? Haha
Most Persona games take place in certain areas of Japan and focus on "school life" but you do spend a lot of time outside of school as well. The game is broken up into two major segments per "chapter." One is very "visual novel" and slice of life. You meet certain characters, get to know them and build your relationship with them, that sort of thing. The other segment is typical JRPG fare. You are warped to or unlock another realm or world, you go thru a long dungeon fighting enemies, collecting Personas and that sort of thing. The quality of the story is very high but it is also very anime, so you'll start off dealing with every day issues and by the end of the game you're fighting a god thats been influencing events from behind the scenes.
Man, if you wanna look for the most intense Persona song, you ought to try something like "The Fog" or "Genesis" from Persona 4 lol; in the case of 5 specifically, maybe "Prison Labor."
So I know you still want Persona to be like this mysterious thing, but to vaguely explain the whole "Does Persona really have many settings?" thing, kind of? Half the settings in a game will be very normal everyday settings you'd expect from an urban environment (School, the place the protag lives, shopping district, city streets ect), while the other half of the settings will be really out there and weird to contrast with the ordinary highschool life, like a factory in space for instance.
Bringing up the school aspect of the game I think exaggerates a bit its purpose in the plot. I mean, yeah, you spend half the game going to school but it's basically a cover and the time when you're preparing yourself for the next mission. And even then you're diverting your prep time to various after-school activities like work, shopping, or other normal leisure or social activities. You can also dive into the alternate dimension stuff similar to where the missions take place, and THAT is where things get wacky and combat-focused. But to put it another way, and I'm just winging this off the top of my head here, but it's like following around Clark Kent doing his actual job as a newspaper reporter for his day job rather than only watching him go out being superman.
Okay maybe i can break this down do u can understand the game more. I will be using a few references already stated here in the comments. So the game is broken into two game styles, social simulator and dungeon crawling turn-based jrpg. And both fall under a calendar system where you have a certain number of slots a day tondo activities. The school is like the hub area, overall story and and exposition drops will happen here but after say the first dungeon its not as important. You do activities to proceed to the next slot until you have to go to bed which passes time into the next day. Things you do in social sim like going to the gym effects stats for battles in the dungeon section as well as form bonds with the people around town to gain abilities as well as other bonuses for battling. Now for the dungeon part and how this fits into the calendar system. There are deadlines where an objective(usually beat end dungeon boss) must be complete or else its game over each with their own "bad endings". You are to go through the dungeon beating enemies, solving puzzles for any roadblocks you may encounter and beat the big boss. The calendar system allows you to exit and try again another day if u are low on items or health/magic, want to unlock more abilities, buy or sell equipment etc. The overall thing about persona is time management. You could do the dungeon in 1 day(its possible but the hardest is the first due to how lil you are in prep) and then focus on the social sim earning money through jobs, forming bonds which are fun side stories which develops the main cast(both character wise and battle ability wise) as well as others. Its a really good story, with choices for almost every action from how u wish to portray the mc(you can be kind, an ass, or a joker 👀). You can invest in these bonds or choose to ignore them(note it is possible to miss a characters arc moreso the ending of it but not impossible if u willing to reload a save lol). The game tells you to take your time and relax 😅 no need to panic from over stimulation of too many choices. I really hope you give it a chance but i understand if its too much of a commitment cause it is a LONG game but this game is special. It got me through a time of isolation during the pandem and i will bet if nothing else the characters(at least 1) u will enjoy.
Please play "Persona 5 Royal", if you prefer to hear all the music first. I'd rate this as a top 25 games of all time; very serious. Add my vote in for you to play it sometime, my dude!

Fun Fact: Butterfly Kiss is Meguro-san's personal favorite Persona 5 track. This is what he said about it:
“This is my personal favorite track in Persona 5. It starts in a quadruple rather like an irregular meter, then turns into triple meter in the chorus, but while the meter goes back in the bridge the rhythm stays at triple meter. these shop themes are so damn good wtf
I think Shoji Meguro has mentioned in an interview that Butterfly Kiss is his personal favourite song on the Persona 5 soundtrack.

does anyone know what the background song is? it sounds like mid to late 90s Capcom arcade but I can't tell beyond that
Man, if you wanna look for the most intense Persona song, you ought to try something like "The Fog" or "Genesis" from Persona 4 lol; in the case of 5 specifically, maybe "Prison Labor."
What´s the music playing in the background of this video?
Can't wait for Keeper of Lust original.
Getting a feeling he is getting to many people asking him to play this game, haha
2 of the best in the game imo ngl
