Hiking Signal Peak - Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, AZ

  • Signal Peak is located in western Arizona in the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, which is south of the town of Quartzite. The trail to the summit climbs about 2000 feet in a little less than two miles. It would be best to have a high clearance vehicle to get to the trailhead. We didn't want to take my brother's CRV any further, so we parked on the dirt road and turned this into a 13.4 mile hike with about 3000 feet of elevation gain. The area is very beautiful, and if you hike this on a clear day, the views should be great.

More trails in Kofa! This region is amazing!

Ashely, I really liked it there. I think there are a lot of places you could get to with a good vehicle where you would have some real remoteness. I really liked how lower down at least, there was very little grass growing, so that would be nice for off trail travel too.

There does appear to be a high proportion of very challenging peaks in that area. Looked very hot but perhaps that was just because it was dry and hazy. Sounds like great weather and your brother was treated to a love specimen.

Hi Piece Train, I need to look up Summit Peak and see if I can find any info about it. It was pretty cool that day, especially with the wind. It was nice not to feel too sweaty. My brother was happy about seeing the tarantula. I think it's the third or fourth I've seen.

Stopped there on a road trip this summer for a bit such a cool place. Thanks for the videos!

Hi skeletor7, yes it is a really neat place. It would be nice to have a good vehicle to move around back there a little faster. You're welcome, and thanks for watching!

I didn't get a chance to do Signal Peak on my last trip to Kofa... Definitely will be back!

That's too bad, but it is a pretty short hike if you get the chance to get out there again, and can drive all the way to the trailhead. It would be nice to have high clearance there. But Signal Peak is definitely a fun hike, and hopefully you can get to it soon.

The haze was unfortunate but the peaks to the east looked really cool sticking up through it. Thats some really rugged country. I agree with you that you get to see so much more hiking in from the road. The ocotillo look cool even when they're dead. Such a wicked plant. The tarantula was cool. That's one thing I pretty much plan on seeing nearly everytime at GUMO.
I have a trip coming up at GUMO that I think you may be particularly interested in. If all goes well, I'll have it posted in the next couple weeks.

Hi Cameron, we've had a lot of haze here, but it might be starting to clear up a bit now. It was nice seeing the immediate views though. A lot of the ocotillo around here have been green for awhile but they might be starting to fade now. I don't know if I've seen a tarantula there or not, but I have at Big Bend. I saw your recent videos, and I hope you have a good trip out there soon and nothing gets in the way!

Hi Old Man, thank you and thanks for watching. The scenery does all the work for the video. Would you happen to know about any of the trails on Mt. Lemmon, if they are enforcing the closures? The forest service website says the Mt. Lemmon Trail #5 is closed, but on alltrails people are using it. Thanks!

@@ZacharyTeich-HikingTrainer From what I have heard, all trails are open.

I wonder if they're just letting people use them anyway, but it has several of them listed as closed. Maybe I should call and find out. We want to hike Lemmon from Catalina State Park but it says that the Sutherland Trail is also closed.
