My zero-cost way to making my house look more luxurious is to just clean it. Because I know people who have very expensive furniture and decor and the couch is always covered in piles of laundry or the coffee table is covered in dirty dishes, so you never see or notice the nice things. Your eye just goes to the clutter. But you can have thrift store furniture and keep the house clean, and it already looks better than the expensive messy house.

I am older, and one thing I had to do to update my spaces was to get rid of "collections." Replacing a collection of Hummel figurines with a large piece of pottery and a plant has made all the difference. Plus, it's SO much easier to dust and keep the space clean. It truly makes my home look "clean" and more modern!
One tip I've come across, to make it easier to let go of old things (collections, heirlooms, etc) was to take pictures of them to add to an album along with a description of what it is, how you got it, and why it's special. Then sell/donate/gift/discard the items as appropriate. That way you can keep the visual representation of the memory without cluttering your space with things you won't use or truly enjoy
@@spooniesarah I have always done this with all my inherited heirloom furniture and jewelry. Now my 3 young adult daughters are doing the same with all their school arts and craft projects that have been sitting in boxes in our attics.
Plants are what I'd call "functionally neutral". Put a green pillow on a couch and it might clash horribly. Put a plant in the same shade of green next to the couch, and it'll look amazing.
Drew, you are spot on about noticing what homes smell like the moment you walk in. So important to have something pleasant, clean and not overbearing. Love your videos
I would also add that hanging your wall art at the appropriate height makes a huge difference! I’ve seen so many homes with wall art way too high and it throws everything off!
I so agree! I watched some YT tutorials on hanging wall art in an esthetically-pleasing manner and then went and re-hung all of mine. What an amazing difference. It's like every piece is brand new to me again now.. And cost = $0.00!!
Art and mirrors in children’s spaces need to be hung at appropriate height as well. If something expensive is in danger of being destroyed by the child it isn’t appropriate for their space. It’s also a great way to teach gentleness/care to toddlers/children!
1000% repaint your high-traffic zones! Doors are touched SO much, we don’t notice when they’ve gone dingy.. also chips and dings, like on door frames, baseboards, or furniture feet. Slay on, Fox!

Neutral means it goes with all color combinations. You wouldn’t use it with a yellow and blue outfit the way you would with beige, brown or black accessories. I disagree that it’s a “neutral”.
I can't stop watching your videos. Every single room in my house needs you and your videos :) and I am so happy to hear a designer talk about aromatic accents it's such a big deal

Have a washable couches instead of putting a sheet on them. If you do need a sheet or something you can get one that looks similar to the couch and covers the whole thing. Washable rugs help too. If you cant do plants on the ground/low, try hanging them or a high shelf. For curtains, consider putting them on curtain rings with clips so you can wash or replace them when they get dirty or scratched Try wood or metal benches and chairs instead of upholstered Leather couches are also easier to clean Hope that helps!

I love seeing you use craft paper to lay out your gallery wall🥳 I use the reverse side of my previous year‘s Christmas wrapping paper leftovers! Pro tip: mark the position of the picture hangers/picture wire, on each piece you are hanging… Rub over the hanger with your finger and either pierce it with a pen or draw a dot with a permanent marker. While the papers are still on the wall, install all your picture hangers and simply pull off the paper. Easy! To keep your pictures level, you can use a ball of poster adhesive in one corner. For a more permanent solution, nail a tiny Brad nail into the corner of the frame (backside) and snip off the head with a pair of wire cutters. Use a level, push the frame corner into the wall, mischief managed!

Could you do a complete tour of your place in every room? I often have trouble blending colors and styles from room to room....(and...I just want to see it ALL!!!)
Questions: white sheets, curtains vs colors for a high end look? How to choose rugs for the space, sizes, patterns, to match or not to match the funiture, curtains etc. How to brighten dark rooms. Thank you for your great tips! Love em all. Keep em coming!!!
Okay I'm sorry WHAT?! You MADE a leather-looking chair... by painting... fabric.... I can't. Just when I think I've seen it all in terms of house trends, you come out here with this magic. Wow.
Lenders Bagel factory is in my town, I'm about a mile downwind. When we first moved here I kept saying to my husband this house must be haunted, I sometimes smell people making toast. Step out on the front porch...cinnamon raisin bagel day!!
Do you sit on the cool non-leather chair? I ♥️ the concept of wall molding - the ones that look like a frame on the wall without art - it’s art itself! 😍😍😎
I'm also such a stickler for scent. Not only does each space in my place have it's own scent, but each one has to "audition" by being sprayed next to the others so I know they will flow from room to room. Stickler 😅
Drew, we'd love it if you'd share your cleaning routine. I think the reason I avoid adding art/visual interest items is because I don't like dusting! :-p
Thanks Drew for all of the great tips. I have pretty much all of my wall space used up, I know sometimes people feel like leaving a wall empty makes it look cleaner, but not always, I feel like hanging things on your wall makes the space more interesting and gives you so many fun things to look at. I am an artist so a lot of things hanging on my walls are my art and other art I have found or have had and then had it framed, in the frame shop I worked in a while back. I also love paint and what it does to transform a space. Thanks again Drew for always inspiring me to try new things, sending love and hugs, bye for now.
I would love to see a video on how to decorate for a family home. I have a 6 year old and toys have taken over my living room! Doing a redesign for an actual family you might know would be an awesome video!
I have a 7 yo and the amount of Shopkins, LOL Dolls, Barbies, and vehicles definitely don’t work with my cozy Scandi-ish aesthetic lol. I got a two-seater storage ottoman for around $70 CDN (*from Amazon) and it has been a gamechanger. It fits so much and it’s easily accessible for my daughter. I leave the commonly-used toys out and have accepted that, but the rest is out of sight but still present. Hope that helps a bit!
Ok not to get too deep but this actually made me tear up a little. When I moved into the house I'm in now I was still dealing with the changes of ptsd and depression in my life - I've always been very houseproud and I thought 'oh I'll fix that when I'm better' but this lil ep made me realise it's been 3 years and I haven't done any of it! My curtains are rental cra@p, there's no light shades on the overhead fittings, all my cushions need replacing, my bed only has one nightstand... so thanks for popping up in my recommends angel, it's time to give myself a nice house again. 🙏 😚
I'm so glad we have had the opportunity to learn from you before all the rich people grab you up. I have no doubt in my mind, that you will be designer to the rich and famous in a very short time.
Hi Drew I really love your enthusiasm you are such a pleasure to watch . I totally agree about the scent of a room if a space smells musty I automatically think it’s not very clean . Also some scents are relaxing and give off a cosy vibe . As for your dusty crusty musty tongue twister you made me smile 😊
I have allergies and often will react to scents so it's difficult, though not impossible, to find a scent that I can tolerate. As long as they're very subtle, I'm usually ok-ish lol
@@amara560 me, also! I can't visit most people because of my toxic symptoms I get from any fragrance, including essential oils! I'm disappointed that Drew endorsed Reed diffusers and similar. They are very toxic and can trigger severe symptoms in many people.
I live in a studio apt, so I can’t change hardly anything. But a friend gave me matching end tables (used as night stands), a sofa table that matches (my grandson’s use it as a desk) & the matching coffee table (which was used against a wall & held movies & such). I’m trying to decide if I want to paint them or not, along with an old entertainment center. If I did?? I’m thinking white & the entertainment center with aqua &/or coral accents. I’m more beachy-shabby chic. LOL
That sounds really cute! I definitely vote for painting them, I have painted an old dresser twice, it's been moving with me from place to place for 10+ years and I just change it whenever my style changes 😊 the colors sound cute, I hope you do end up painting them!
@@MoDro281pretty sure they’re real wood…my friend who gave them to me because no one in her family wanted them, said the came from her uncles million dollar home. Each piece has about 1/4” or more piece of heavy glass on the top, so there’s 3-4” between the top & the glass..not to mention each piece has a drawer that opens & closes from each side!!
@@susandooley9630 They sound like a very generous gift! Perhaps if you could get an idea of the time period and value, you could decide if it’s prudent to sand them and refinish the stain? Painting can be more forgiving in the long-run, as it could be stripped later. If you just can’t keep the paint brush to yourself, maybe start with painting the top surface under the glass and vibe with that for a week. Good luck!
@@susandooley9630 OH! And how do the legs look? Hardware? Drew mentioned new feet/legs on furniture.. Personally, some mid-cent legs make anything sing
As someone who is super sensitive to smells that first tip is so good! When I walk into a home that smells bad or musty that’s the only thing I can focus on and I just feel like their home is dirty even if it doesn’t appear to be. You could have the most expensive furniture ever but if your house smells bad I’m going to be so uncomfortable. 😂
Yes!
This!!!!
That’s SO true! Clean and nice smelling.
YES. this could not be more true. And also to add to this, getting decor and furniture that is easy to clean/dust. Avoid glass!
Great point!!!

I'm now following you just from this one video. It's hard to find someone as multi-faceted as you! Thank you and I look forward to more!
My matching bedroom furniture set (headboard, dresser & nightstands) are staying FOR-EVER 🤣❤️
🧡I agree, a plant is neutral as long as it does not have multi-colored flowers. Love what you do Drew! Poet and didn't know it! Love Ya!🧡
Okay I'm sorry WHAT?! You MADE a leather-looking chair... by painting... fabric.... I can't. Just when I think I've seen it all in terms of house trends, you come out here with this magic. Wow.
That's exactly what I thought...I was like whaaaa!?
I love the chunky knit throw blanket! Cas
Stickler 😅
Well if every space needs its own scent, then the "audition" is 100% necessary.
I really must say that you are a very wise and prudent man. I love all of your ideas. ❤
Such a good video, the window treatment before and after was amazing! 🖤 Lisa
Drew, we'd love it if you'd share your cleaning routine. I think the reason I avoid adding art/visual interest items is because I don't like dusting! :-p
Excellent point on lighting. As a lighting designer, trust me when I say this, even most expensive houses have terrible lighting choices.
Wonderful! That 'leather' chair reno was mindblowing!!!
We DO NOT want matching bed sets! Preach it Drew 😂 I could not agree more.
Great tips! I hadn't realized how much the throw pillows and a textured blanket could elevate a room until I watched this video.
Wow, that chair is so transformative. Amazing.
That window transformation! I'm obsessed!
Can I just have Drew design my whole home? 🥰
May I say I love your tips and the fact that they are down to earth and relatively unexpensive. I enjoy your videos.
Drew, I love your sense of humor! 'No matching furniture sets for 2021, there's no more of those!' 😂
Omg all of this was brilliant and I REALLY appreciate how much you talked about keep costs low, upcycling and getting things second hand!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Bedside tables on each side of the bed is good Feng Shui too.
also! according to the law of attraction it will help your chances of filling that other side of the bed with your soul mate!
I think that the title is so funny : looking expensive ??? Maybe it's because I'm French, Americans are so straightforward, that's why I love them
Spot on with sense of smell. That and clean…we 2.5 bathrooms and no counter space. Clean clutter free and smells nice. I’m in!
I think you are amazing, just found your channel and can’t stop watching. Love your tips, tricks and advice. x
Are the pieces wood? MDF? If you’re considering white, maybe a paint wash (water/paint mix) would be a nice place to start.
I'm so glued to your channel. Thanks Drew. Chidinma from Nigeria 🇳🇬
Love the shirt you had on when doing bed sheets and bedding clip. Adore the whole video!
I did a small 4 drawer white dresser with a similar night stand on the other side of the bed and it looks amazing
Bad dog or cat owners. The smells give it away
Yes!!! Totally agree
I’m sensitive to smells to. Fake chemical fragrances make me choke and gasp. The best smell is “clean” and fresh air.
You have such a nice way about you, so positive. It’s a breath of fresh air.
Loved these tips!! Especially the moulding one!! Definitely gonna try that out. Thank you!
I agree, engaging all the senses is so important
Love love love, feeling inspired and motivated. Thank you Drew! You’re the best!!
This video is a lot of help...I tend to favor wood resins scents (myrrh, sandlewood)...really relaxing.
Great tips! I move into my new apartment next month. So excited to incorporate some of your tips.
Amazing! good luck with the move :)
I knew a few of these tips because I read a blog about what makes your space light and airy. But that wall moulding Was new to me so thank you Drew ☺️
That chair is gorgeous more info please I have two chairs I need to do something with
If you go to his channel you'll find the video with all the info in it :)
Drew was not playing talking about them light fixtures lol 😂
I felt that on another level the way he said "CRUSTED DUSTED BUSTED"
