    I think what wouldve been a helpful takeaway here for many people is that
    mono: both channels playing exactly the same signal
    stereo: both channels playing a different signal
    By delaying the left channel slightly it plays a slightly different signal compared to the right one, and this creates the illusion of width. However, you dont necessarily need a delay to make things sound wider (as is kind of implied here) - virtually any L/R processing (subtle distortion, EQ, etcetera) will generate differences between the L and R channel creating width. Whats more, I find that using delays to widen sounds actually has drawbacks; e.g. if you collapse a sound treated with the Haass effect to mono you''ll reveal the effect's chorus-y nature and while that can be interesting, it doesnt sound terribly transparent.
    What I've started doing recently is using an EQ to make sounds wider. You take an EQ8, put it on LR mode and then cut out small notches at a range of different frequencies on the L channel. Then copy these notches to the R channel (right mouse button on EQ8 for this option) and ever so slightly move all of them to the right or left of their original positions. The idea is that frequency-wise both L and R are slightly different, but not to a point where it becomes noticeable. In addition, because both channels are EQed to the same extent as far as +- in volume goes, you don't get a result that's skewed to the right or the left (cutting out notches by definition makes things less loud, so if you would only cut out notchs on the L channel but not the right, you would get a somewhat stereo result but it would also be skewed/ "panned" to the right) but rather a result that is stereo but also in the center of your mix panning-wise.

      great advice here. Width can be achieved in a number of ways - not just a delay.

    • @ards5161
      @ards5161 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You Suck at Producing maybe you can talk about it in a future video e.g. when doubling synths you can use different EQ and reverb settings on both L and R to not only make things sound wider but also much more complex and interesting. apart from that it was still a nice video :)

    only thing i would mention is that if you create the stereo image with delay, the side you hear first will always appear louder, because the brain hears it first it will hear it as dominant, something to keep in mind with the mix

    1. Layer
    2. Pan one more left and pan one more right
    3. Add effects how you please.
    It'll give a much more full effect than any of his options, they aren't balanced enough.

    Roger was clipping all the way through due to his resonant low middle THICCness. Joking aside, that's why I fricking hate PIANOS and RHODES, and working with them to be more specific. You may have them all EQed and compressed like a pro, but all of a sudden it just POPS UP with the most disgusting fart of a sound imaginable, and it leaves you wondering what the heck could I have done wrong. At the same time you can't just avoid using these luscious instruments, just listen to how melodic they sound. Damn I got carried away, PEACE OUT, love your videos. (ツ)

      Denis Borisov Yeah, just have to limit the scale or avoid that one note with a sectional silence so the brain fills in a fantasized version of what that tone should have been.
      P.S. tone and note have the same letters 😮

    Second question: StudioOneArtist does not support the outside VTS plugings, is there any pluggin in StudioOne Artist that can give an effect of Ozone Imager2 (widening the sound, phase)?
    First question: StudioOne Artist, the volume of an acoustic guitar recording through microphone is very low (compared to previously recorded tracks of acoustic guitars with pickups), the knob on interface is at the maximum, tracks out level -12db, the amplitude of the signal wave is low to normal, still the sound is hardly hearable even when i pop up the buss' level to +4db. Why? What can i do?

      To be honest, if you treat a Roger with the haas effect (The short name for the delay trick in this video) and try to squish him back into mono, he’s not gonna have the best time. So the haas effect it’s really not the ideal way to create stereo width, it does kind of screw with mono compatibility. However, it seems that doing subtle effects on one of the channels, like a subtle distortion or EQ, can achieve similar with with less phase issues.
