@Lopyt *Sir_Guy* It's similar to autotune and rap music - some people actually like the jankiness of "wrong" mixing techniques. Very similar to how distorted guitar came into popularity 60 years ago
@Lopyt *Sir_Guy* Music For real. It needs to be real subtle or used creatively to come out nice. It sucks in commercial productions 90%. /watch?v=SE7o3gJ_3R4 this is p sick imo.
This guy's humor is on another level. You know you have mastered this program when you can make jokes about music production, and people actually get something out of it that they can understand, a real teacher right there.
When you turn the threshold down that far, it's not "super compressed" or "super crunchy" anymore. The point of parallel compression is usually to get a VERY compressed signal, and then mix that in with the clean signal to preserve some dynamics. Try like 10+db gain reduction next time instead of 3db like in the video (which is light compression). Most of the sound difference you're getting from having the plugin enabled is probably from the "soft clip" button, rather than from the traditional "parallel compression" sound.
@@drcurious3924 I did. And it's not an opinion, it's a criticism of how he used his parallel compression plugin. Clearly You Suck At Producing wanted his input as well.
Only just discovered you, so glad i did, these videos are possibly the best I've ever watched. The comedy stands alone as genius and hilarious, the production tips are also brilliant.
Dammit, I know every feature in ableton and don't need your lessons, but I can't stop watching. It's so damn fun! "we're just redirecting Derek's aggression towards his siblings" - brilliant.
I may be addicted to this approach to pedagogy. And what's most surprising is that the sound quality of my beats is drastically improving. Well played, sir.
I've been an FL guy since back in the days of Fruity Loops 3 but after watching a bunch of your videos I feel like I could actually comfortably use Ableton now. Well done sir! Uncle Joe would be ecstatic!
Hey friend, stumbled upon your channel a few days ago. I've already watched like half of your videos! You deserve all the views you can get! For all of us, please keep doing what you're doing! (Only if you enjoy it.) :)
this was great. i was a big fan of "You Suck at Photoshop" in college but have been messing with ableton lately and trying to find someone who actually presents a succinct video where they aren't whispering for an hour. thank you for this.
Save up some money for outboard analog compressors, saturation, etc. and it will go a lot longer of a way and bring more actual warmth into your life than anything possible in the digital domain.
This is the best tutorial I've ever seen. Subscriber as of today! Any recommendations for gluing items with other compressors? I don't have the glue on Ableton but I have the PSP Vintage Warmer for example. Any other recommended compressors out there?
203 dislike? What gives? Too advanced? Too mundane? Neither. Thanks to you, I no longer suck so bad at producing. And I've been laughing the whole time. Keep it up!
Why the utility gain to minus ± 6 dB while you have a make up gain of 13.2 ? why not use 7.2 dB make up gain from the start and ditch the utility? Otoh, very educational video ! thx.
Can you please A/B things at the end? When you make small changes sequentially, it's hard to hear the difference at every step. Would make it much better to hear the difference between the start and end.
Questions: 1. Why did you use a utility to turn the drum volume up, instead of raising the makeup gain? 2. why did you loop the noise from the drum sample, when you were already going to add a sample of some vinyl noise? 3. Why was the Sidechain set so harshly, when you were going for warmth? Shouldn't it be more subtle? 4. Why did you use a pre-recorded sample of vinyl noise, when there are plugins that can add vinyl crackle based on the sound you add them to? You could have added that to the keyboards, and it would've balanced better with the noise from the snare, especially if the Sidechain was smoother.
1. leave makeup up to activate soft clipping in compressor 2. idk nice effect i guess 3. i like sidechain to be real obvious 4. i find that plug ins don't get the sound i want
Why don't you just run the whole mix through tape ? (I know, I know ...) But you get the natural compression from the tape and an increased noise floor at the same time. Plus, the higher the voltage - the warmer the sound. :)
One of the most underrated channels on TH-cam.
ayyy thanks bravo
Facts.
its true
I learned something from this so....

Holy shit this is golden content. I was pretty sure no one could add comedy value to producing.

from a vinyl surface of a record
or use google and steal it from a random link
or use ableton's vynil distortion tool ;)

What's the drum rack sample on G#? I only know one song called 'The Moment' that is 3rd on it's album and it's by Tame Impala
yup that's the one
Questions:
