  • Rewarded for the work done when no one is watching. While everyone's eyes were on the ball waiting to see what was about to happen, she worked in the background... staying relevant on EVERY SINGLE CONTACT.
Willing to fill a vacant spot on coverage, sprinting back to her defensive base, closing a seam with her passing partner... keeping the same footwork and finishing in the line of the serve whether it is her platform on the ball or that of her teammate's, finishing every dig with her hips under and/or forearms to the floor just to ensure the setter gets a quality ball, running with her teammates after a negative touch, being the first to connect with a teammate after they make an error, exaggerating round shoulders after a pass without a care in the world that people call her "extra."
Giving strength in the empty space.
Alone in a gym, hundreds of wall work reps, thousands of minutes in footwork drills, countless OOS setting reps, nightly video review... practices and matches.
Voluntary double days four days a week in Fall of 2021: Monday and Wednesday mornings with Gary working on OOS setting. Tuesday and Thursday mornings with Britt in the pursuit of the perfect passing form.
Unapologetic as a vicious competitor in the practice gym, unafraid of challenging teammates to rise up... bring more... come with me... let's kick their a$$.
All because she believed in a single, simple concept. If you behave like a champion, you will become a champion. There are no little things. You are what you repeatedly do.
We can all learn from Lauren Barnes and the work she does when no one is looking.
