My home is smaller as we retired. I really scaled down the furniture size. It is a bit small my tip was a coffee table with a beautiful base clear top in glass. to see the rug open and some houses are hard. I floated all my furniture. It's still a bit close to the kitchen as the floorplan. Almost all my furniture fits on my rug. at least front feet. nobody's perfect lol.
Military wife of 23 years and we moved 15 times - my furniture never fit the room. I can wall paper a bathroom with sheets and liquid starch and never damage the walls. I used painters drop cloths for curtains and shower curtains over 40 years before it was ever popular.
Not military, but my mother moved us around as if we were! Every time we arrived somewhere new, it was off to the nearest lumber yard; my mother bought planks of wood and breezer blocks for instant shelving. I absolutely LOVE having grown up with the mindset that one can make things instead of having to buy expensive furnishings. I couldn't find a bedspread I liked (all too fancy and/or synthetic:" Yuck!") and finally used a painter's drop-cloth and it is PERFECT!!! And I love it. (Great minds!)
My Dad was military. My Mom used to talk about trying to make things work in base housing too. Back then you could not even paint a room. She was beyond excited when Dad finally retired. They actually got to build a semi- custom home❤.
Two nice things about pulling the furniture away, from windows at least, is guests can stand right up against the window to see the view better. And planters can sit in the window.
@lisa the issue with white furniture is that they get dirty easily. In small spaces with kids and is even more challenging. Maya that’s why people go for darker furniture??!!
Not having pieces that can do hidden storage. I have a trunk as my coffee table that provides storage, and I have two lidded end table wooden cubes that provide it, too. I like open shelves and displaying cute items in plain sight in our house, but pieces that can store things are a help in our small house. It is practical, too.
It’s always wonderful to watch your videos! So much to see and learn. Thank you. Who is the lady in the blue dress? She is a bit distracting. In later videos a black arrow is used to guide your eye around the room. That is much more effective for learning.
@LisaHoltDesign Where can you find a petite round table for an eat-in kitchen? I've looked high and low, and they're either bistro size or the standard 41 - 42". Nothing in between worth considering. Are those your kids dancing? Adorable!
@@Dingle1234 There are absolutely 36" round eating tables!!! You can start by googling '36" round tulip table.' or "36" round pedestal dining table." I assume you're referring to a pedestal table at only 36"; legs would waste all the space.

Lisa, I LOVE your tips in this video!!!!!!! (As always, FABULOUS!) I thought you were going to mention the TV above the fireplace! (Did I blink?) For me, this is THE WORST design decision one can make. (It tells me everything I need to know. That the people who inhabit the home are NOT conversationalists. And it's usually a home without books...
All I watch are videos about houses (building, remodeling, renovating, restoring, buying, selling, etc. etc.) and I ALWAYS notice when people hang their pictures too high (I SCREAM "NOoooooooo!!!" at the screen). People will do this and I suspect they KIND OF know that something isn't working... but somehow cannot figure out exactly WHAT that thing is. I hate it when people lean their Art work against the wall. And especially when it's on the floor and there's a great expanse of wall above the picture. It just looks as if they COULDN'T BE BOTHERED. And... I think it shows disrespect for the piece (and the Artist). Things get spilt on the piece, they get kicked, knocked over, things put in front of them, blocking out the work itself. It's a big fat "NO." for me (but then ... I'm an Artist).
She’s not saying you can’t do it. She’s showing you..(or beginners) the basics tot trying to enlarge their space. If you watch her videos, she is supportive of dark colors all the time. But using too many in a small space is the difference. Notice she didn’t say don’t use any dark stuff. She said “too much heavy dark furniture” You could easily do dark furniture without making it huge and big. And bear in mind this is about trying not to lessen your space by visual eye. If you don’t care about this kind of thing, then by all means, go all dark! She’s a designer… not your moral and opinion teacher. Do what you want, yo. But if you want advice on interior design… she knows what she’s talking about. Obviously too, all things are relative and there are many exceptions to rules. She’s just giving basics. Try to be positive, yo. It’s not personal or meant to be offensive.
Ask the architects who draw the condo plans. BR wall 1 has slanted wall & closet door swing & 1 window , wall 2 is opposite hall door & has 2 windows, wall 3 has hall door swing, wall 4 has hall door & bathroom door and closet door. Wall 2 is only place bed fits, so I did wall to wall drapes.
I live in an early 1980s ranch. Two walls are taken up by closets. The other two walls have small windows smack dab in the middle of them. Sometimes placing a bed under a window can’t be helped.
I was planning to make my small living room feel more open with an armless sofa but heard from people I won’t be happy without arms. Your take? (This is my only living space, where I watch TV/movies.)

Obviously don’t paint it (unless it was always painted).
Is it beams or a coffered ceiling?
