Professional interior designer here, turned WFH part time SAHM. In our old house, the kitchen was bothering me for the longest time, specifically the open shelving you see when you walk into the room. It turns out I just hadn’t committed to a color scheme and was too focused on “using what I had.” I spend about a year thrifting at various places and finally have a consistent scheme and mood, and most of the items are functional.
Not every wall needs something on it. Many people believe they must fill every wall and space, but sometimes less is more. Embracing open spaces allows your eyes to rest and creates a serene environment, free from the chaos of excessive decor and furniture.
I so agree and wish I had learned this sooner! I’ve spent time and money trying to find the perfect decor only to get sick of/be influenced by new trends/not being able to make it work/etc. now I’ve been embracing minimalism and the lack of clutter and open spaces have given me so much more peace in my mind! 😊🩷 I know it’s not for everyone but I love the feeling of being free of unecessary things!
I am more of a minimalist but it took me many years to realize that. Plus, the older I get, the less stuff I want to deal with. But, there are all kinds of decorating styles, maximalism, minimalism and everything in between. There's something for everyone! 😊
So much great info...and I was so distracted by the fussy little yellow arrangement. Kept waiting for it to get knocked over while you two were talking. This was a great topic and loved the ideas.

Rewatching this. You two were so good together. Cracked me up when you said, “ There are 1000s of ways to ‘solve’ your room ,” then proceeded to throw out the mirror and big artwork for the plain DR wall and declare, “ I WIN!” with the plant idea 😂❤ But you WERE ‘ right.’ Sometimes, there are a lot of good solutions but only one or two GREAT solutions!
I had a really fixed idea of how our awkwardly shaped family room had to be laid out. I don’t know why. But my husband-who is not really into interior decorating-did not have any such mental blocks. He suggested moving the couch into the awkward section of the room. I was convinced that it wouldn’t fit there… and I was right, but actually, so was he. The couch doesn’t “fit,” in that there’s a weird-shaped triangular space behind it. But it also fits perfectly, in that the whole room is so much more comfortable and useable now. And the couch is so cozy in that corner. Idk why I’m rambling. ANYway… Maybe we’ll build a custom table to go behind the couch in the awkward space. Or maybe we’ll just leave the cat tree there, which is what’s there now. Either way, the room is so much better and I’m really glad he didn’t have the same “the room MUST be this way” mental block that I did.
To Anna from Philadelphia... you could also put up some plants in that area, not a whole tree like Caroline suggested cause I think the space is a bit tight... but get some cute wall planters and play around with the kind of plants you choose... you can make it very colorful or very neutral :) OR put up some hanging plants from the ceiling!! that way you get the touch of nature, but also it wont take floor space. Also, Caroline, please make more of these type of videos! Love the format
That ad …. Outstanding. Love so much that you both used what the people already have, didn’t tell them to ditch everything, and gave options. Again, showing the power of arranging the elements in the room in more visually pleasing ways and making the space more inviting and usable. Fantastic.
OMG Caroline--you are really on to something with this video! I LOVED it and got so much out of it. Please do many more in this exact same format. Molly was a great addition as a talented second opinion to your adept suggestions. More please!!
No don’t you DARE with another unreal add for the Bombas!!! I’m so influenced and I can’t even buy them in my frickin country, devastated 😫 Still the best ads ever though ❤❤❤❤
I can’t buy Bombas in my country anymore, either - they stopped shipping here. But I bought a bunch a few years ago, and they really are very comfortable. Plus, I was able to find purple socks (his favorite color) for my 6’6 boyfriend’s gigantic feet. He has such a hard time finding socks at all, let alone really comfy socks in fun colors, so it was a great Christmas gift. He was so excited. I wish we could still buy them here.
Another option for the one with the massive tv over the fireplace would be to switch out for much darker curtains, like a nice green, and lean into the dark on that wall. If painting is an option, painting the wall behind the tv to match the dark curtains. With the reading chair and side table pulled out a bit as suggested, could be super cozy.
Yes and also a framed TV for me! I really hate in every room the pitch black of a squared tv, and to put it in a cool frame and showing a work of art on it can really change everything. The fireplace is way cooler than the tv (obv) and the black takes away too much focus!
I also have a thermostat in exactly the wrong place. I found a Mexican punched tin bird (in profile with his wings raised up, in size a little larger than the thermostat) and slipped his feet behind the thermostat enough to make it look like he perched there. Amanda might be able to make the thermostat a landing zone for something amusing like that.
This was fun from start to finish! Pretty much all of those spaces need texture and pattern. The bedroom that was last needs a tapestry (texture) lumbar pillow with that mustard color, and dabs of other colors, then add a throw rug with those same colors. I think the futon needs a camel brown leather “mattress”. The lovely living room with the freebie furniture would really look great with drapery panels that have pattern in colors that tie in with the new richly colored rug that you suggested. The tv over the fireplace in the other living room definitely needs another home! I have artwork above my fireplace, with sculptural elements and brass candlesticks on the mantle. Our tv is on a substantial antique buffet that has plenty of doors and drawers for storage. Blessings!♥️
26:47 by no means a critique, I have no idea what I’m doing when planning a room, but there is a beautiful blue, red, and white piece of art in a wood frame with a beige mat directly behind Caroline when she says blue red and beige can’t be cohesive. Imo that looks pretty dang cohesive with the rest of the room.
I liked the bar cart, I do agree it looks bare. It would be a good place for plants, or mayne books and nice things to display and add a touch of her personality.
I usually scrub right thru ads but THAT was amazing. I had to stop my indoor run because I was dying…..keep it up. ALL THE SPONSORS….GET IN ON THIS. ❤️
I adore how changing furniture just a little can transform a room. My dining room looks a lot bigger, wider and taller just because I moved the furniture around. And it happenned by necessity when we were painting the walls and then... it was just an eureka moment. We are still painting the walls, this time in the living, and I already know I'm going to embrace black and green as accents against white walls.
Another terrific vid! Thanks for the introduction to Molly. Love, love, love her style! Her suggestions for the terrific buy-nothing room, were great! For the wall full of switches, etc., a backless bookcase can be a great solution because you can reach in when you need to access, but have a free hand for objects and art. Also, a bookcase by a door creates a bit of an entryway into a room.
Thank you for introducing Molly, she is really talented, you always find the best people. I remember the video where you go apartment hunting, if Molly made one of those soulless apartments look like home, she is a sheer genius.
she's so talented. we connected first over design, but she's also just an amazing person and now a dear friend. i love talented people who are great, kind people
Anonymous Bostonian’s room would really benefit from layering in light fixtures. (I loved the reworked layout, so my suggestions are for the new arrangement.) It seemed like most of the lighting is attached to the ceiling. I would put a couple of task lights near the ends of the couches-maybe some fun arched floor lamps. Wall sconces on either side of the TV would be nice. I’d also try a museum light over the artwork and a traditional table lamp on a small side table by the single chair. As a mom of six myself, I totally get wanting to keep the middle of the floor open for toddler play. Maybe try some soft round, upholstered seating? The kind that has a lid, so you can throw toys and blankets in it when someone stops by unexpectedly? Those can be put in the middle of the room and act as coffee tables after the kids go to bed. I’d probably also add some baskets (bonus points if they have lids) where the arched furniture used to be. You can’t ever have enough places to hide the kid stuff-and kids don’t tire of their toys so quickly if they can’t see it all, all of the time. The last thing I’d consider adding is some sort of living element-or faux living element, because….kids. So jealous of your Boston location! That would be my dream!!
Gallery walls - the thing rarely mentioned by designers when discussing them (that makes them work or not) is the space between the pieces should be consistent. when you have variety in the spaces in an inconsistent way it looks messy and unintentional. Caroline demonstrates brilliant consistent spacing in her mock up example, and in her home, especially the tight hallway she has in her own apartment (not featured in this video). She always nails it ♥
I love videos like this; we all have not-working spaces. I recently started a notebook titled "doinks", inspired by one of your recent videos, to keep notes, idea, and inspo for little projects in my home.
I’d like to add a tip : tvs can be mounted on the wall with rotating arms. So it can be placed somewhere less visually heavy when not used and pulled out facing the seating area when used.
I really love the style of these videos. I learn so much and i would really enjoy this as a more regular series. With every space being unique, I'm able to gleam your insights and apply them to my space. I've really noticed them help to refine my own eye for design. It's like a mini masterclass each time. Thank you for sharing!
LOVE this type of content! Please do this again, and also, give Molly the same amount of time to marinate on the questions like you did. I'd love to hear more of Molly's thoughts!
Ugh I have a meeting and can’t comment on the actual content till later but I love this video so much. Well done, thoughtful suggestions and you just look like you are having a really good time. Also, I really love how you take everyone’s specific situation into account. I know that’s literally the point of designers is to work with the space as it is but I don’t know you you read the conditions and you work with them you don’t say oh well, you know you can just move the couch later when the kid is not playing like you’re living in the reality of the people who are submitting. I just really love that and I had to mention.❤❤
Sometimes I think it's picky to care so much about the specifics like the type of laundry basket you're using, but overall the space you live in affects your mood as much as its functionality. It is always worth it to pay attention to your space in ways spoken about in this video. I enjoyed this one. Also, I love the look on your face as Molly is telling us about herself -- amazing example of genuine support.
Alternative to gallery wall would be to add a shallow entryway console and put a tall vase on it or something sculptural. Idea being you don't have to deal with the wall but decorate in front of it.
LOVED this video! I would love for this to be a series!! Also, your Bombas ad was great! I usually skip ads, but not this one. That was pure entertainment 🤣
Such a find! I loved this video and the low fi graphic fixes- it’s just enough to give this gist and explain the next step concept plainly. Loved the energy and the intention. Both of you together were so complimentary.
LOVE and obsessed! One aside - in the second home, one of those wall fixtures looks like a temperature sensor! If it's covered it won't correctly sense the apartment's air temperature and her (probably) heating, maybe cooling, will act wonky and potentially cycle. Maybe that particular homemade elf door could be covered in a screen, or like rattan? Or like, one of those framed wire mesh jewelry holders? Anywho, amazing!!!
LOVED this video!!! I just moved into a bigger dorm room and have to find new solutions now, and this is really motivating me to make the space my own and see the limitations as opportunities to get creative :)))) love how your content is fun, inspiring, nonsense in the best way and no-nonsense in the best way. Love!!
23:20 add a frame around the TV! and for 23:57 I think consider different sources of lights, the roof light is really harsh and is giving it a really cold vibe & maybe extend the curtain rod! such a beautiful room with lots of potential 🤍 also LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! should be a series xxx
Ok Now , I have time to respond. Love the socks commercial! 13:55 Or Paint the Wood curtain rod black for budgetary reasons to achieve similar results. 21:25 perhaps instead of a valance you could add a long rectangular or oval art work in between the curtain rod and the window, especially if you like your curtains open most of the time. (I do) 28:00 love love the painting to create a faux molding example.
Oh dear your videos give me such a pleasure!! I have been missing your vlogs they felt like short movies that made my day😊 your authenticity makes you so relatable! Keep rocking Caroline!!!!
9:40 what about a lovely side table that holds all those things on the floor and covers some of the awkward fixtures? I love the deep set canvases, i didn't know that was a thing, but i think a shallow piece of furniture (maybe a shoe cabinet even) could add warmth and be even more renter friendly.
White living room floor plan: I would change out the small rug to something with some colors to accent the rust and blue colors and add texture to give the eyes a pause…and maybe angle it if necessary. The lighting could use a dimmer switch since they have toddlers, not lamps obviously. The dark credenza at the end, along with the dark TV is too much of a stark contrast against the continuity of the two white walls, the linear furniture as well as the lower ceiling, so you could always break it up with the lighter color objects, instead of what is on the credenza now and mix up the colors that you can pull from the room. Put the light throw on the other couch and add some blue pillows to the rust colored couch. Texture, color breaks and angles to claim separate spaces can fix most spaces. I have to say, I love the blue tones here and the rust tones can be used more to make it more relaxing. Don’t be afraid of color because color is your friend as it can make statements to your design.
I’m sorry to hear it. Get yourself a little treat if you can. I was feeling down yesterday and I ate some ice cream right from the container and it helped a little.
i hope you do something nice to take care of yourself, with the effort and care that you would give to a friend who was down. turn that energy towards yourself! ask "what can i do to make your (my) day a little bit lighter". sending you a hug
I love your videos. I like that you can be almost snarky but never judgmental. I love that you’re never about “Go out and spend $10,000 to remake your space.” I love how you share your personal issues but never whine. Thanks for everything you do! Holly in NY
I NEED this to be a reoccurring concept. You both are SO brilliant at taking what people have and adding (with minimal cost) CHARACTER. I was like giddy watching what you both had to say. I was like “YAS!” To everything.
The wall with the buffalo art, I would actually just leave it blank but get a cuter hamper. The eye needs some empty space. Or move the hamper and put a cute accent table there with a beautiful bouquet of flowers on it.
Can we just all agree that Caroline is the funniest woman on You Tube? I hope that she gets free Bombas socks for life! The next time that I need socks, guess where I am going? I really appreciated this fix my home episode. "Make it fun, wer'e all gonna die" is going to be my new life mantra. Caroline and Molly had some excellent advice.
The family with the children should also consider Caroline's dropzone tip. I have a baby and a lot of his toys end up in the living room and even his nappy changing caddy. Maybe something built in to store this stuff would be good. Totally understand not having a coffee table, but a pouffe with storage on caster wheels would be a good option.
I know that watching your videos is paying off, Caroline, because I have sooo many ideas about each space, based on what I’ve learned! The “Room to Play” room from the anonymous Bostonian is just BEGGING for more types of lighting. It only has bright overhead light but a warm glow from a large lamp on a side table plus some sconces or a floor lamp would help so much! I love the idea of changing the layout. The beautiful wainscoting is completely hidden now. I’d put the couches in an L configuration to make the space cozier. One sofa staying on the wall opposite the window, with the other opposite (and facing) the TV. The console table could be along the back of the couch. This configuration would box the space in more, but the bonus is that you could more easily corral the kids safely there while hanging out, without having to watch the stairs. The accent chair could be in the corner by the window with a reading lamp nearby, with room for a small drink table. You could change the direction of the rug by 90 degrees so it fits better in the new layout. The small rug seems unnecessary, unless it’s there for extra cushion for the kids. I’d center the black furniture piece under the TV if possible. Adding some plants or maybe a tree in the corner is another idea. Love this series!!
In the first room, I would make a reading area near the fireplace by putting the green chair there and adding a floor lamp. Put the dog bed inside the crate or in another room to eliminate some of the clutter on the floor.
I watched the ad two times in a row to counter my shitty day (its my 40th bday). Leave it to Caroline to make socks sexy and fun. I have a feeling you are about to get a crazy amount of promo deals, like be able to buy a house in this economy amount of deals. I have the same sense of humor as you so when I watch you I realize how hilarious we both are so thank you for the confidence boost, much needed. Rest of video good also, loving how you don't push hyper consumerism and perfection - but socks off to you for that ad!

The only bombas ads I ever want to see are your integrations. They better be PAYINGGGG for that kind of slay 👏👏👏
Love how practical this is/not fixing problems through unfettered consumption
Another option for the one with the massive tv over the fireplace would be to switch out for much darker curtains, like a nice green, and lean into the dark on that wall. If painting is an option, painting the wall behind the tv to match the dark curtains. With the reading chair and side table pulled out a bit as suggested, could be super cozy.
I love this suggestion.
I thought that too. Or even just painting the TV/fireplace wall a dark color so it all meshes together without white strips around the TV.
Yes and also a framed TV for me! I really hate in every room the pitch black of a squared tv, and to put it in a cool frame and showing a work of art on it can really change everything. The fireplace is way cooler than the tv (obv) and the black takes away too much focus!
I always skip over sponsor ads except yours. Spot on genius.
Very cute and clever!
this is so creative and cute
And allows airflow so the thermostat can sense
Okay the AD!!! Like what 😮 that may have been the best part of the whole video. Incredible
I love the new background music that you have been using in your videos lately! It creates a really chic vibe and reminds me of iconic shows like SATC
I need at least 14 videos from you exactly like this
This was fun from start to finish!
My 5 year old looooved your sock ad 😂
You're winning all the demographics here, Caroline.
oh my gosh haha this is delightful
Thank you for introducing Molly, she is really talented, you always find the best people. I remember the video where you go apartment hunting, if Molly made one of those soulless apartments look like home, she is a sheer genius.
she's so talented. we connected first over design, but she's also just an amazing person and now a dear friend. i love talented people who are great, kind people
@@Caroline_Winkler ❤️ that's why we love you
For the buffalo wall
What about a few staggered shelves? Plants, clock, framed art of varying heights could easily obscure the switches and plates
I adore this video format!
This was the first time in a LONG time I watched an entire ad for funsies. 147/10. Perfection.
With how much creativity and effort gone into Caroline’s bombas pitch, I feel like I have no choice but to buy some and be apart of it😆
The Bombas Ad I didn't know I needed!!!
If being particular is wrong, I don't wanna be right.
Yes ! A series ✌🏼🌷
Want more of this type of videos from you. I really liked this one. Helpful indeed.
so glad to hear it! definitely will be doing it again
These videos are a nice comfortable blanket during apocalyptic times.
To say that you are extremely talented in every way, is an understatement!!! ☺️🥰❤
Such a find! I loved this video and the low fi graphic fixes- it’s just enough to give this gist and explain the next step concept plainly. Loved the energy and the intention. Both of you together were so complimentary.
I love every second of this. ❤✨️ Thank you! As a woodsie-leaning girlie my entire life, I'm adding fairy doors and shit to my home currently! 😮❤😁
Your skin is glowing Caroline! and I love your makeup
LOVED this video!!! I just moved into a bigger dorm room and have to find new solutions now, and this is really motivating me to make the space my own and see the limitations as opportunities to get creative :)))) love how your content is fun, inspiring, nonsense in the best way and no-nonsense in the best way. Love!!
Loved it! The whole thing, and specially your sponsor part of the video ❤
(I do)
28:00 love love the painting to create a faux molding example.
THIS NEEDS TO BE A SERIES
Oh dear your videos give me such a pleasure!! I have been missing your vlogs they felt like short movies that made my day😊 your authenticity makes you so relatable! Keep rocking Caroline!!!!
I'm praying for another vlog. We miss her! ;)
9:40 what about a lovely side table that holds all those things on the floor and covers some of the awkward fixtures? I love the deep set canvases, i didn't know that was a thing, but i think a shallow piece of furniture (maybe a shoe cabinet even) could add warmth and be even more renter friendly.
Finally a built in advertisement that is highly entertaining and well thought out. Love it!
White living room floor plan:
I would change out the small rug to something with some colors to accent the rust and blue colors and add texture to give the eyes a pause…and maybe angle it if necessary. Don’t be afraid of color because color is your friend as it can make statements to your design.
having a bad Depression Morning so thank you for dropping this today
I’m sorry to hear it. Get yourself a little treat if you can. I was feeling down yesterday and I ate some ice cream right from the container and it helped a little.
Sorry to hear that. Been there often. Drink some water and try to eat something if you can.
Sending you a big hug! ❤
i hope you do something nice to take care of yourself, with the effort and care that you would give to a friend who was down. turn that energy towards yourself! ask "what can i do to make your (my) day a little bit lighter". sending you a hug
thank you everybody for the sweet replies ily all and doing better today bc of y'all
I love your videos.
The ad in this video is giving me LIFE
It's the best Bombas ad I've ever seen a TH-camr do!!!!
The wall with the buffalo art, I would actually just leave it blank but get a cuter hamper. The eye needs some empty space. Or move the hamper and put a cute accent table there with a beautiful bouquet of flowers on it.
Pls make this a regular series! I could watch for dayzzzz.
I think it should be illegal to do sponsorships any other way, love it! 😂😍🧦🧦🧦
I have literally gone back to your balcony makeover video just to listen to your Bombas song 😅 it actually really smacks, please release it 🙏
Hahaha 😆 the ads!!! Thanks for the laughs AND the incredible design ideas Caroline 👍🏾😘. You are a treasure 💙
You're the best... Bombas is lucky to have you! : )
"New Caroline videooo!" - me to my husband
I'm adding fairy doors Aaron's my house. This video is now even more perfect than before! ❤😭
*husband puts on headphones and hides*
I've just commented on your Bombas ad and then looked over your comments, and hands down, your ads are the bomb(as). ;)
Y'all need to make this a SERIES! ❤❤❤
In the first room, I would make a reading area near the fireplace by putting the green chair there and adding a floor lamp. Put the dog bed inside the crate or in another room to eliminate some of the clutter on the floor.
I’ll try that! 💜
Molly is a ray of sunshine. Loved both of your suggestions to take these spaces to another level. I learned so much!
Omg the only ad I've not skipped past. Thanks for this accomplishment! 😂
THE CAMERA QUALITY YESSSS get it girl also love how you know your color season and wear colors you slay in
Best sociks advertisment have ever seen. Besides your design tipps. Thank you for this series.
MAKE IT A SERIES! Love this. Maybe have different guests come through? Genuine. hilarious, and simple solutions to our everyday interior design conundrums
This was the best video!! Easy fixes that didnt take a lot of time or money and made a huge difference. Love.
Recently found your channel, absolutely love 💓 recently moved in with my husband to our first apartment and your videos have helped navigate so much thank you!! Also love your personality always so fun to watch your videos 🙌
I cannot tell you how excited I am to have discovered your channel!
You make me laugh out loud. The dramatic socks ad was incredible!
For the Bring in Warmth (all white/gray bedroom) if you move the wooden furniture like they said, add a nice hanging plant at the top falling to a side of it: LOVE
