Uruguay's victory in the final is the most extraordinary achievement in the History of Football. To come from behind in a match they had to win in front of 200,000 host fans is unbelievable
I think the way they dominated not just this World Cup but the copa America before it played a huge part. They were destroying teams. But they shouldn't have been so arrogant regardless.
India refusing to play the world cup because they wanted to play barefoot is an urban legend. They just hadn't the money to make the travel and seeing it was at the time not an established competition they didn't bothered to try to get it. FIFA tried to give the spot to Turkey but they refused too. France was approched too but it was way too late to reunite the team then so they refused. During the WC, Brazil was so certain to win that a paper printed the brazilian victory before the match. It angered the uruguayan captain. He bough a bunch of copies, scattered them in the toilet of the hotel and told the players to pee on them. Way later on his life, traveling to Brazil, a way too young police officer to have saw the match recognized him at the custom and they talked about the game saying than " Brazil still cries for that day. " Barbosa, the brazilian goalkeeper, was marked with an red iron. 20 years after, as he was doing groceries, a woman recognized him and told to his young son " see. This is the man who made the whole Brazil cry " After his career, Barbosa was blacklisted and forbidden by the federation to become a radio host for Brazil. In 1994, he was forbidden to pay a visit to the team before the '94 world cup. He said before de died than " In Brazil, no one can get more than an 30 years sentence. I never killed anyone but I got a lifetime sentence."
He was. After that no black or metis player was selected for the national team for a long time. Later in the 70's, the maracana stadium was renovated and the goals were replaced by modern ones. He bought and burned them on his yard.
I had no idea that Pelé was blond as a young lad...😀 Seriously though, I love your videos. To this day, the 1950 WC win against Brazil is considered the highest moment of nationak pride for the Uruguayans. The players were revered as national heroes to their last day. On the contrary, in Brazil the players, particularly goalkeeper Barbosa, were ostracized for the rest of their lives.
The biggest football tragedy on Brazil soil. People now think it was the 7x1 loss, but people killed themselves due to losing to a weaker and inexperienced team on the finals, after doing great at other stages. Also, this loss drove many brazilians to believe that black man couldnot be legitimate goalkeepers and Barbosa died ignored by CBF and thought as a shame. It was a disaster on humanity level.
@@Ro-nu7vv Well, it was the best South American team since 1916 at least, the year Copa America started. However, Uruguay has been on some decline: between 1945 and 1949 (4 Copa America editions), the best it got was a 3rd place on 1947. It was a somewhat young team against the heavily favorite Brazil, which won 1949 Copa América and had a really strong squad.
1️⃣3️⃣ is a lucky number for uruguay. Uruguay is a very lucky guy in 1930 and 1950 as they were in most comfortable group as well as home ground advantage in those world cups. At first 1930,they had to play final with only 3 matches where argentina played 4 matches, they robbed in semifinal using home ground advantage. 😂😂😂 Secondly in 1950, uruguay were put a group where only 2 teams existed, whereas brazil surpassed to next round playing 4 matches. Consequently uruguay won the cup playing with just 4 matches where poor brazil played 6 matches though they were so far from the glory. In that two particular world cup edition, total team was 13.😅😅😅
I've heard that the reason India didn't compete in the world cup was because they wanted to save their money in order to compete in the 1952 Summer Olympics held in Finland, which was more affordable to travel to
The referee for the world cup 1950 final was English then 70 year's later in the Euro 2020 final England suffered a very similar fate that Brazil did in the world cup 1950 final England had reached the Euro 2020 final and they were playing at home Wembley against Italy everyone in England was already declaring England the champions before the final even began then during the final England scored a goal in the 2nd min for 1-0 Italy equalized from a poor goal in the 2nd half for 1-1 score remained 1-1 then Italy beat England 3-2 on penalties after both teams took 5 penalties each
What an incredible story. England went in thinking they were the favourites and ended up with one of the the greatest losses of all time. 😂 Also India hold the record of qualifying and never having played a match 😂😂😂
Really enjoying the videos. Was curious why the Betsy Ross American flag from the American Revolution with the 13 stars for the 13 colonies was used instead of the contemporary one with the 48 stars for the 48 states in 1950. Just ease of design? Nod to the history between England and the USA? I have a production background, so I get interested in stylistic choices. Thanks again for the videos and hard work you put into them!
Thanks much appreciated. Honestly, this was the first editor I used, and I think it was easier for him just to use that flag. In my recent videos starting 1974 World Cup, I'm using another editor.
Uruguay is 2 time FIFA world cup champions, but in actuality their 4 time world champions since they also won the 1924 and 1928 Olympic football/soccer tournaments which was organized by FIFA themselves. Both tournaments had professional players and it was for the idea and roots for the FIFA world cup.
Belgium would have had a World Cup too from 1920 but Czechoslovakia quit in the final when they were losing out of spite and the whole thing really isn't counted because of how messy it was.
This is one of the most stupid World Cup formats I've seen. Is there a reason why they had a group of 2 while also having two groups of 4? Would have made much more sense to make one group of 4 and two groups of 3
So firstly, the reason for all these groups and then a final group instead of any knock-out games was money. Brazil FA wanted more games to make more money. As for why the groups were so lopsided. In these early world cups, due to the logistics teams would pull out before the tournament started. This happened for India and France. Both were drawn in groups 3 and 4, respectively. But both pulled out late, and replacements could not be found. That's why we ended up with this ridiculous scenario where Uruguay played just 1 group game with Bolivia to qualify.
Truthfully, it's been there since before they even started playing in them. They didn't even bother entering the earlier tournaments even though FIFA gave them an automatic spot in the tournament.
@@TheSportsFiles-mm1kg Don't just blame England - it's not surprising many European countries didn't compete in 1930 - it took three months in those days to travel by boat to South America and Uruguay didn't compete for 20 years because of the Europeans that didn't turn up. Argentina got into a terrible sulk and didn't turn up in 1938 because they weren't chosen to host it, then pulled a face in 1950 because Brazil hosted it.
In Britain the World Cup was not regarded as truly representative of world football until 1950 when, having rejoined FIFA after disagreements over amateurism and broken time payments, the Home Countries became eligible to compete for the first time.

England losing to the USA must be one of the greatest shocks in World Cup history.
100%. England was so complacent going into the match as well. They didn't see usa as a threat at all.
History would’ve repeated itself again had pulisic not missed his shot against England at 2022 World Cup
Yeah that was a great chance for Pulisic. It will be interesting to see how US do when they host the next world cup.
@@etiennedeleage6804England got somewhat of a revenge on USA by finishing 1st in the group while USA finished 2nd
Back then, yes
Brazil losing the final but inspiring a young Pele has to be one of the great butterfly effects in World Cup history.
Yes I agree. Who knows what would have happened if Pele didn't get so inspired.
1950 is so underrated all because of WW2 and unusual format they used.

I'll never understand why fans celebrate a win before it's secured. Brazilian fans seemed to severely underestimate Uruguay in the final.
