      Haha! I’m not great with the tactical side of the game, but I feel it’s important to talk about it when I can, at least at a basic level 😅

      I think, it is really impressive what you did, the more so when you're actually aren't that good in it. I found it nicely done.
      However, would you mind telling where you researched that stuff? Old books, original primary reports of the matches or by researching the persona of the relevant people? I find it really exciting to deep dive into what actual people had done a century ago, as If bringing them a bit alive again. :)

    Chile's captain for that WC team was legendary goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone. After retiring he switched to commentating, first on radio, and then on TV, becoming one of the most important journalists in Chilean history. In 2010, on a primetime national TV show prior to the South Africa WC, he saw footage of Chile's match against England for the first time, and described his performance as "utter shit". An absolute legend

    2:06 You've used the wrong crest for Ireland in the British Home Championship. That's the crest for the FAI and not the IFA (Northern Ireland).

    A fundational moment in Brazil's football history.
    Pele told that he saw his dad crying and said to him "I will bring the trophey to Brazil" (or something like that).
    Brazil refused to wear white during 1958's WC, due to superstition of losing against Uruguay.
    Barbosa, a great keeper from Vasco da Gama, was shunned by CBF and national managers until his death, being the scapegoat for the loss. People believed that black players couldn't make great keepers...
    That loss made brazilians belive that, for all of our talent, we were a cut bellow everyone else: during what people then considered the brazilian football's heyday, 30's and 40's, Brazil won just 1 Copa America, in 1949. We produced talent after talent, but it was never enough.
    In 1952, when Brazil hosted the "Copa Rio" (the world cup between clubs), Fluminense beat Peñarol senseless, 3-0. Peñarol was the team which a lot of important uruguaians players from 1950 were from, some of which remained. The press talked about the game as almost a brazilian redemption.
    Even in 1971, Fluminense lost 1-0 to a team during a Libertadores, in Maracana, people called that game "Little Maracanazzo" (Maracanazzo being the nickname for the Brazil 1-2 Uruguay in 1950). Brazil already won 3 world cups by then, the first team to do so.
    1950's WC remains the biggest "What if " to me. If Brazil won, would our egos inflate so much that we would become a Uruguay, a somewhat strong team that never ammount to much? What would have happened with Pele, Garrincha...?

    • @dewsfutbol
      @dewsfutbol  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Very well put! I never knew about Little Maracanazo, sounds very interesting.

    This was Uruguay's 4th world championship and second world cup. This wasn't an upset either. Uruguay dominated South American football for decades prior and would go on to do so until the 80s.

    That headline means they didn't learn from the major mistake by the Chicago Tribune in 1948. "Dewey Defeats Truman" which means ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN! Brazil still has never won the World Cup at home.

    I have heard 7-1 is the bigger tragedy for Brazilians today.
    Dont know if it really was worse or its just because of recency.

    • @dewsfutbol
      @dewsfutbol  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Living Brazilians probably say 2014.

    • @Alexeiyeah
      @Alexeiyeah 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Due to recency bias, people would probably say 2014. I was at a friend's house with my GF... The ride home was really terrible, the stoney silence was bad.
      But people in 1950 were more involved with the national team. Even if people belived in 2014 squad, it did not hold the same weight, you can see on newspaper at the time.
      The reports of people offing themselves happened ONCE: 1950.
      If you search old people talking about 1950's loss, you can see sadness in their eyes.
      Brazilians today feel humiliated by 7x1, but it became mostly a joke. The most serious thing is that we now think Brazil has no chance of being champions ever again: players work abroad, not in Brazil; the federation is mostly a corrupt bunch of clowns...

      In hindsight losses with a wide margin are often less frustrating than narrow ones:
      After a narrow defeat you can still discuss: "What if we take the chance in the 34th minute? What if the referee gives a penalty in the 58th minute? 🤔"
      After a clear defeat you have to admit: "The other team was obviously far better today! 😵"
