I was impressed with the sound difference of the Tonker It give the amp so much more tonal personality. Would love to see a gig where are you are using it.
It’s amazing how changing a speaker out of an amp can modify the tone of the amp!!! Sounds like it works great for your style!!! If I didn’t already have my Marshall Vintage Modern, the DSL 40 would be my amp of choice!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Cheers!!🤙🏾🤙🏾🎸🎸🎸
The video is back! I am not sure what went wrong with the premier feature but I probably won't be using it again for a while. Lemme know what you think of the tone! Full video review to follow in about a week.
that's a monster magnet on the back! sounds good. Tonker is an interesting name. I remember Tonka trucks as kid. cool upgrade! Trying new speakers is always fun.
I have the earlier model of DSL40C, and replaced the stock Celestion 70/80 with an Eminence Private Jack. Man, what a difference! I went from entirely cutting the treble out and diming the mids to running everything at 12 and dialing in how much top and bottom end with the presence and resonance controls. Sounds like a boutique amp on all voices now. Eminence makes killer stuff... Great video. If you're not totally sold on the Tonker, try the Private Jack.
Nice! I think the 70/80 might be the most bland speaker out there. The Eminence Private Jack is one I haven't tested before but it's great to know it's a killer! Awesome stuff.
I put a c12k jensen in my Peavey Classic 30 and it’s a favorite amp now. I’d always heard, use ANYTHING but the factory speaker in a Peavey. Absolute FACT!
My favorite is G12t75 in a combo. It has sweet highs, but the mids and lows don't go to mush. The mids have great string separation so think David Grissom crunch tones.
I have a DSL 20 combo and was thinking about putting the Tonker in it. The stock speaker doesn't have quite as much clarity as I want. This Tonker is very clear and crisp. I wonder if the Tonker will work as well in my 20 as it does in your 40. Sounds awesome in your amp.
Wow, too BRIGHT? That’s interesting because I find the DSL40CR to be one of my darkest amps, lol, but I don’t play strats... So far I love the stock V-Type. I did grab an Eminnence 65 that I thought I’d put in my Rebel 30 cab driven by the Rebel 30 MKII head. That head/cab combo, imo is definitely bright :) Did you dump your Egnater gear?
Thanks for the tip about switching to the 8 ohm jack. I used that idea and tried out some 8 ohm speakers I already had. It saved money and opened up some different possibilities.
Great video as always Shane. I use my DSL40CR mainly with my Les Paul and I don't find it too bright but if I used it with my Strat or a Tele, I could see it being more bright than I would like.
I usually try and dial in the sound the way I would play it live first. I never use the Marshall on clean but surprisingly it does sound pretty wild on clean as well. That video is coming up soon.
@@intheblues I'm looking forward to it. To me, if it sounds good clean, it will only sound better as you crank the gain to taste! I've been using Tone Tubby speakers in a Fender for a decade. No desire to change.
I think the Eminence Tonker sounds great man. I watched a vid of The Tone King upgrading a Celestion seventy 80 with the Tonker in a Randle amp he had that amp almost all the way and it sounded awesome. I'm getting a Marshal DSL20CR and I don't have it yet but I'm lookin for the perfect upgrade. I'm goin with the Tonker and maybe I should mention that I also saw a video where a guy took his DSL20CR and upgraded the tubes. They sounded great as well but with a Celestion anniversary edition speaker. So I'm goin with the Tonker and the tube upgrade for that killer sound. Sounds great man. Keep it.
Sounds great for that amp! I will be interested to hear it with the back on. Great video Shane! Totally agree that the right speaker is first... tube swap etc later.
so long as you like the tone, go for it. questions: why did you go for such a high wattage speaker? reason for question is : you wont get the speaker pushed sound and being eminence, the sensitivity will be high, so you wont get output tx driven sound. wouldnt choosing a 50w-70w speaker give you more of the grit you like?
From Leo: This is the 1st I have heard of the Tonker. I have been happy enough with the Cannabis Rex to buy three of them, but they are only 50 watt. That Tonker might be a good speaker to replace the deteriorating Scorpion in the old Bandit. Have you considered that as a demo?
Thanks for your impressions and demo of the Tonka speaker. It was helpful to hear why you changed the speaker and also why you chose the Tonka. The new Tonka sounded great with the back off the cabinet, I would be interested in hearing the sound with the back on. I was wondering if the higher wattage of the Tonka makes a difference to the sound?
Hi Shane. In this case, I totally agree with this choice. It sounds really nice. I have a Marshall Valvestate 2000 50H that I used with a 4x12 loaded with Celestion T-75's. And I was always fighting with the excessive treble. When I get my Marshall fixed, I may try pairing it up with a 2x12 cab loaded with Blue Marvels. Again for my 2019 Bandit I eventually found the Blue Marvel to be in the "Goldie Locks" zone tonally. I'm pretty sure that the lower power Blue Marvels that come in the Peavey Classic 30's are Eminence Legend GB's. I remember plugging into Classic 30 with a Blue Marvel in it and really liking the sound over mine with a Vintage 30. Again, the treble thing. And I'm wondering if the one that came with my Bandit is a Tonker Lite. It sure looks like one . Plus, It's very light.
I have preaching for years to change your speaker or speaker cab to change your sound. Its way cheaper than constantly chasing your sound. The best way is to research speakers until your blue in the face and make your decision.....I remember having the Carvin Vai amp series 2 with 4x12...looked beautiful but the sound was not so good...could never get enough treble...plugged into a boogie 4x12 and boom sounded way better to my ear.
Thought it sounded great. I put their Governor speaker in a MusicMan RD50 and I LOVED it. I should have kept that speaker when I sold the amp. It gave it a noticeable British sound . I have a Eminence Blue Tick Hound that i'm going to put in my Katana 50
Man iv been watching your videos for years now. Im a lefty also 😂 there is very few of us about love your style and attitude in Belfast there's to many look at me players lol in saying that check rab mccullough and Gordon mc calaster two monster players around my local scene. Your a amazing player keep it up 👆 man. Thank you so much for your videos!!
Now that's yer tone sorted ...Marshall default just a great amp if you turn everything off but the volume!...some of your best tones was when you were at Gerry's ...but looking forward to hearing this...if the neighbours are out !
That is diplomatic. 'A little bit bright'. The DSL I have is a sharp harsh hard pain in the arse sound that no amount of EQ can get rid of. OK guys, no need to get upset, that it seems some DSLs are that way and not others. I have spent two months trying to get it sounding OK. If met-ally sound for lead solos is the thing, well yes, mine I think you could shave with it, it is so sharp. I will watch this Toncat whatever very closely.
All DSLs are that way....lol. I had a JCM2000 DSL for years and I tried everything to get that bright, buzzy tone tamed. After trying other DSLs I finally realized that it wasn't me...that's just how DSLs sound. I sold it and replaced it with a Blackstar HT Stage100. Couldn't be happier....sounds more like a JCM 800 or 900 without all that buzz and treble from the DSL.
Thanks for the video Shane. You mentioned the good projection, so I'm now thinking, could a change of speaker make the Fender Mustang GT100 more loved perhaps? Any chance of doing some experimentation with that amp in another video? Or should Fender put out a special edition with a better speaker too?
+ For Fivestarmusic. I've bought a few speakers and tubes off them over the last few years and always great service. And a bit cheaper than getting it locally (especially when Ebay have their 10 or 20 percent off coupons)! It might just be the mic'ing but it sounds a bit fuzzy in places (or maybe the way you have your amp set).

Shane...I love the sound! A whole lot different then the Texas Heat bass wise! Keep it!!!
I'm hearing that it sounds noticably warmer and still has some top end. If i could have got my old jcm 2000 dsl 401 combo like this I would have kept it, always hated its tone.
I have a 2x12 peavey vintage. It was made in 1976 and has the solid state pre amp and 6l6 power tubes. Inhabe the original speakers and the highs are extremely ice picky. This isn't the classic model it's called vintage and was only made a few years. What eminence speaker config would you try ? I like classic rock 90s grunge its 110 watts 4 ohms
i remember that speakers needs something like 200 hours of play until they start sound like they supose to sound so dont expect the best results after you install the speaker inside the cambinet
I bet a Red Fang would sound great in this amp. I think they did away with the Red Fang, but I am sure there is a similar, new model that that takes the Red Fang's place.
A little bit in terms of projection and bass response but recorded it sounds the same. The next video I put up two mics in the room and have the back on the amp again.
With a closed back cabinet you can't have your tone utterly ruined by some Fire Marshall Bill (or the Headline act's photographer) making you jam your speaker into a very wrong place.
I think it sounds better, I like the Eminence GB128. I have the Private Jack which wouldn't be a good fit for this amp but in bass heavy, lower midrange dominant or darker amps would be awesome. Not at all like a vintage 30 bit great in these applications.
Tonker sounded good. How do you think is compares to a sheffield being a british sounding speaker . thinking about putting it in that 15 dollar studio pro I just got a couple weeks ago i was telling you about
What speaker would you pair this with more? Swamp Thang or Texas Heat? I’m leaning towards Swamp Thang for the clean part and the bass frequency, but then the Texas Heat would also balance it out maybe? Any suggestions?
Hey Shane, great videos! I recently purchased a Marshall DSL 40cr. I am similar to you in that I play out, and play various old school styles, from classic rock and blues to more rhythmic orientated where I need a jangly beatle esq tone. I like the DSL a lot but the stock V type speaker was a little harsh in the high end. So I put a G12-65 Creamback in, it’s sweeter on the high end tone, but not as ballsy for my classic gain stuff. Basically my question is what speaker in your opinion is like the V type but with a sweeter top end to take away the harshness on more clean sounds, I don’t like alot of bottom end, the Creamback has a little too much for me. What do you think of the Scumback M75? Thanks, yes I’m a picky bastard! Lol
Happy Belated Thanksgiving from LA Puente, CA, U.S.A Shane! (Do you celebrate that "Down Under"? I recently replaced the "Blue Marvel" in my new Bandit with a Rivera branded Celestion G12T-85 that I found on Ebay for $25 + shipping. The seller said it was the same as the T-100 they sell now. OMG! It sounds amazing! The "Blue Marvel" was very good but the Celestion improved the tone immensely.
Yes, those are great speakers for amps like the Super-Sonic 22 and Blues Junior in my experience. I think the max out at around 50 watts so they are a great smaller amp speaker. The Texas Heat kind of tames the top end too in the same way that one does. Great speaker!
hukl - I have the DSL40 version that came just before Shane's and the CRex is the speaker I finally settled on after trying several others. Strange because I had it sitting around a long time and never found an application for it that I liked. But it worked perfectly for me in the DSL.
Any experience with the Eminence Governor? I'm looking for less brightness and ideally more bass than V30 I have. I have an older DSL 401 and like you I have to run the Treble (and Mids!) at next to nothing with the bass all the way up!
Having replaced the Blue Marvel speaker in the Bandit for having too much top end . Wouldn’t it be worth a try in the Marshall to add the top end you are after?
Have you ever tried 15 inch speakers ? Im about to snag a vintage Celestion G15 to replace some non descripts in my 2x15. Its a rabbit hole I guess but i like it out there in the left field ;-)
Hey Shane! Got a question (I know about guitar gear bout im a noob in terms of mods) Would changing the speaker make an amp somewhat louder? I have a Fender Champion 40 (the Solid State little combo) and for practice is great but for a mid sized gig (big bars or clubs) when you need to turn it up, the definition just fades, and I think it might be cause the speaker is not great. (I should add that I plan on buying a new amp, but would like to keep the Champ as a backup or secondary amp, and it would be nice if it was gig-ready. I mean, I could always mic it up, but it's not always an option, depending on the place) Cheers!
40 watt’s transistor is not loud enough. You lose definition because there is’nt enough headroom. Also the solidstate power-amp circuits used in today’s amps are pretty awefull cheap technology. A 15 watt tube-amp can be much louder than a 40 watt transistor-amp and still sound better.
For what you’d pay for a new speaker you could buy a Champion 100 and keep what you like but have more of it. Or get a katana 100. Solid state amps like that are great for gigs and jams because they’re dependable and usually have better connections for front of house and no tubes to worry about. 100watt solid state is loud enough unless you’re playing a stadium. 😁🤓🤘🏻
It sounds good and as you know will get better when broken in. Also that new red guitar is giving me G.A.S. syndrome. Can't tell ya how much I love it 👍👍👍
Doug J My experience is that the Texas Heat is a great speaker for Fender amps. But keep in mind that it’s the darkest sounding speaker from Eminence’ Patriot series. All Eminence Patriot speakers sound good with Fender amps. I really dig the Maverick aswell. For a funky bite the Swamp Thang is really great. Also if you like the Texas Heat, a light weight Lil Texas might be a great alternative to save your back.
FYI, with a 1 speaker amp / combo, placement of the red or black lead doesn't matter to the amp. That's called polarity. But it does matter a lot when you add another 1x12 cab in addition the amp's internal speaker or a 2x12 cab. Polarity is an odd thing with cabs. If they're out of phase then strange things happen. Not hammering you about this, but polarity's not an issue with one speaker. But I always put the red back on the + terminal & the black on the - terminal when I replace speakers anyway.
Christina Carducci I have a late 70s twin reverb. the overdrive or distortion sound is not good. If i wanted to get a better overdrive sound what speakers would i get. it says 135 watts on the back of the amp. what ohms and what watt speaker? what type of speaker? Ive heard a less efficient speaker would break up any advice is greatly appreciated thanks
Fenders use 8ohms, so you'll need 2 x 8ohm speakers whose combined rating well exceeds 135 watts. Best practice is 1.5 times the ratings, so two 100-watt speakers will do it. Speaker break-up is not like amp distortion however. Twins are clean amps, so the distortion is hard to get at normal volumes. Those things are heavy, so you can look at Neo speakers to save weight (I do that on my old twin). Before you start rolling through speakers, make sure it's been to a reputable amp tech. Speakers might be fine - what's in there now? Later on after getting it checked out and doing any swaps, you can also experiment with attenuators. They essentially drop the wattage from amp to speaker allowing you to drive the circuit without ear bleeding volume. Check rating on the attenuator and make sure its rated for double your amps wattage. There's also a trick where you pull the two middle 6L6 tubes and disconnect one speaker, which halves the watts and sends 8ohm to one speaker. Talk to your amp tech before trying that. It comes with risks. (I do it in combo with attenuator, it helps the distortion but alters tone a bit darker. I like it). **Don't touch ANYTHING inside the amp itself, other than what was done to exchange the speaker in this video. Capacitors can deliver a lethal dose of electricity even when unplugged. Its an old amp that could have been badly modded or has missing grounds, so use one hand at a time so you don't create a circuit with your body, or otherwise wear thick rubber electrical gloves. But see the tech first if unsure. Its 135 watts, you'd be wise to respect it's power.
I saw a guy from Blackstar, the head engineer I guess, he said that with a tube amp mismatch of the impedence outs and the speaker cab is not a big deal. But is important with solid state amps. Have you heard one that is mismatched? Does it sound the same?
It’s the other way around. Solid states can handle most impedances. Tube amps get in trouble with very low (like close to shortcut) or very high (like no speaker at all) impedance. A mismatch like a 4 ohm speaker on a 8 ohm output has an effect on the sound, but does’t blow-up the amp.
Marshall's got to bright thin and ice picky,, i like a late 70"s master volume amp sound. you dont hear that crazy top end on zz top, lynerd skinnerd, foreigner, so im with you trying to get a new amp back to the sounds i grew up hearing.
Any suggestions on swapping out the Mustang IIIv2 celestian speaker? It sounds good already but I like to fiddle around so I'm curious if anyone has input.
Can't you like look cute (lol) and ask Eminence to do a whole test comparison with a bunch of speakers? It's very much a hit or miss, because there aren't many videos about guitar speakers.
I've been trying to find a really high efficiency speaker to put to my Custom Vibrolux (reissue), so it doesn't break up so much at stage volume. This one (101.5 dB sensitivity) seems like a promising contender, based on descriptions. I can't find any demos that show a clean sound through it though, or that address how readily it breaks up (the less the better for me). Anyone have experience on this issue? I might just go w/an Electr. Voice EVM 12L (despite the anvil weight)
I was impressed with the sound difference of the Tonker It give the amp so much more tonal personality.
Would love to see a gig where are you are using it.

so long as you like the tone, go for it.
questions: why did you go for such a high wattage speaker?
reason for question is :
you wont get the speaker pushed sound and being eminence, the sensitivity will be high, so you wont get output tx driven sound.
wouldnt choosing a 50w-70w speaker give you more of the grit you like?
I don't want speaker distortion. The cleaner the speaker stays usually the much rounder the sound.

How do you think is compares to a sheffield being a british sounding speaker . thinking about putting it in that 15 dollar studio pro I just got a couple weeks ago i was telling you about
cant make up my mind between tonker or swamp thang. both are LOUD but im leaning towards a british speaker
Amazing what swapping a speaker can do!! I dig it, thanks Shane!! Also emailed you buddy. 😉
Lol
g1265
I think it sounds great
I dig it! Sounds Awesome!
do you have any clips of the DSL40CR with the Texas Heat ? im thinking about buying a Texas Heat for my DSL40cr
Sound great!!
That sounds way better to my ear . Thanks Shane ! :-)
Great video!, can i ask how much the speaker cable is long? (in case i need to connect an external loadbox)
It made it sound more like a Marshall lol... Kinda funny the speaker it came with didnt sound more like the one you put in it.
Have you ever tried the Cannabis Rex from Eminence? Thats my favourite speaker substitute for amps/speakers which are too bright.
Yes, those are great speakers for amps like the Super-Sonic 22 and Blues Junior in my experience. I think the max out at around 50 watts so they are a great smaller amp speaker. The Texas Heat kind of tames the top end too in the same way that one does. Great speaker!
The Lil' Buddy is great as well. Also very loud for a 10 inch and quite some low end. Sounds like a 12 inch basically.
@@intheblues Good to know - will try that one at some point as well :)
hukl - I have the DSL40 version that came just before Shane's and the CRex is the speaker I finally settled on after trying several others.
Its a rabbit hole I guess but i like it out there in the left field ;-)
cool stuff man
I love the v type in there
It sounds good and as you know will get better when broken in. Also that new red guitar is giving me G.A.S. syndrome. Can't tell ya how much I love it 👍👍👍
Do you think a Texas heat would sound better in a Fender blues junior or a Fender deluxe reverb? thanks, Shane I know your busy guy
It would be a great speaker for a blues junior. I am not sure about the deluxe reverb though it might be worth a shot.
@@bartvschuylenburg thanks Bart, for the good advice
What’s wrong with the “V” mine sounds great!
Still have this speaker in the amp? I know the video is a bit old. I’m looking to change the speaker in my DSL40 as well.
I went with the Texas Heat in the end. The Tonker was good but it was too upper-mids heavy for my sound.
That’s not true at all. Your speaker is either pushing or pulling. If it’s pulling, your leads are backwards. Use a 9v battery to prove this point.
Hi Shane, I have a Marshall MG 15 CD-R practice amp, any suggestion for a speaker up grade. Is it worth while in your opinion.
What didn't you like about the Texas Heat with this amp?
This was before I got the Texas Heat.

I have a late 70s twin reverb. the overdrive or distortion sound is not good.
I love that red guitar! What is it?
Pure Salem Mendiola. Great guitar 🎸
Came for the review but as always, I stayed for the killer playing. Dude u gotta do some lessons!
Did you leave the back of the cabinet off when you tried out the speaker? If so, do you find that it alters the way you hear the speaker's sound?
Shane can I ask where you are? What city I mean? Enjoying your videos from Florida!
Hi Jason, I am in Melbourne, Australia. Many thanks.
Is this the speaker still currently in the dsl40
I've been wondering about a Celestion Redback 150 in a DSL40CR.
Question, which speaker jack is the 8 ohm, the center jack or the one next to the 1x16 where the cab plugs in?
Hey Shane, why are your affiliate links always for US only? (Items won't post to Australia, this speaker included) What about your Aussie audience?
Amazon Australia has just started and I don't have an affiliate link for Australia. Check eBay if you want the best deal in Australia.
Did you keep the Tonka in there?
Would you use it in a bandit?
Marshall's got to bright thin and ice picky,, i like a late 70"s master volume amp sound. you dont hear that crazy top end on zz top, lynerd skinnerd, foreigner, so im with you trying to get a new amp back to the sounds i grew up hearing.
Man its rocks.
Facial expression at 7:44 says it all. I made the same face.
Swamp Thang or Wizard for more headroom. I put a Swamp in a Blues Jr 15w and its actually too clean... Drive pedals fixed that.
yes sir
