@@Cr8z13 well... the G12M (not H) Creamback is a very nice speaker for rock and blues. It has a very nice mid range character and brightness without getting brittle or sharp sounding. The Monoprice is not REAL bright, I remember having to run my treble pretty far to the right, but I was usually playing humbuckers, it would probably be plenty bright with single coils. Count in the little harsh mid bump of the swamp thang that goes away when being played in. It’s a great speaker, but you’re gonna need a bit of patience for the great sound to settle in.
Lyric Klein - yes sir, it is. Much about it is so much better than Fender (until you get into custom shop territory). Grover tuners, bone nut, 22 fret thru neck (almost unheard of) and nice saddles rather than those horrible vintage bent metal ones, even has 500K pots already in it. The pickups were a bit hot, more like specials so I swapped them out with a vintage pair of actual MIM tele pups that I found on Reverb for $40. It’s super nice now and I’m selling the Modern Player... tired of dealing with it.
Guitar Man3YT - no but Shane of In The Blues sure likes them. After comparing specs and forum comments I’m sure the SwampThang is right for me although I wouldn’t mind a tad more brightness from it. Luckily my amp has treble and presence to spare.
I found a brand new DSL40cr at guitar center for a used price I brought it home and found someone put a greenback in it but I didn’t like the extra breakup in the clean ch, I ordered a v-type only cuz that’s what was supposed to be in it, I hated it from the second it was installed, but it honestly did sound better after it started to break in but I still didn’t like the fizziness. Now I run a Mesa 90 watt black shadow 8 ohm, it might sound crazy but I really like how it tamed the highs and adds tight bottom in the bass.
Ronnie Parfait - that’s awesome man. I was happy with the V-Type too but figured wth!? and am now loving the new speaker for the same reasons you love yours \m/
Jean Claude I don’t understand what your comment is suppose to mean.. to clarify (not knowing I had to), I bought a used amp that is in mint condition for a great price,, on the tag at Guitar Center it did say “used amp”,, again it is “brand new” as in perfect condition, I know that the amp is used. The person before me did a speaker swap and I honestly feel that they forgot to swap the speaker back to the original before they traded the amp in because the green back is an awesome speaker that I’m happy to have in my collection.
The mids and low end grit are great but you will lose a bit of top end sparkle. Keep the V type and perhaps build your own matching cab. You’ll end up with a mini stack that has the best of all worlds.
@@chrisasmith75 - gotcha, putting a 12AY7 tube in the socket closest to the amp’s input jack (V1) and adjusting the bias down to 32 mV DC will help immensely. It’s a beast!
Great video and recommendations! That is the exact distortion type of tone I want to get. I have a Fender Princeton from the 90's which 9 years ago I've loaded with a Swamp Thang and sounds amazing. Now it's time to get a tube amp but I can't afford a Mesa Boogie so I've decided to go for the Marshall DSL. At the beginning of your video you complained about smaller cabinet sizes and speaker ressonance (which made me think seriously about it). However my Princeton is 112 small cabinet and it sounds HUGE with the Swamp Thang. The price difference between the DSL20 and DSL40 is irrelevant but as I have serious back issues and can't handle much weight, therefore a lighter amp is imperative. Points for DSL20! Last but not least I have space limitation. That's why I'll be going for the DSL20. From what I've read every owner complains about the speaker loaded in DSL20 (Celetion Seventy/80) which was the DSL40C speaker, now upgraded to Celestion V-Type for the DSL40CR that you have. The Seventy/80 seems to have even less bass response than the V-Type you had and seems that the treble sounding is too brittle as well. The V-Type was an upgrade for the DSL40CR to solve that issues. However Marshall didn't upgrade the DSL20 with it, so I will need to upgrade the speaker. Now thanks to your video and your smile at the end of the video I'm seriously thinking of not selling the Fender yet and waiting to get the DSL20 and swap speakers with the Fender to put the Swamp Thang on the Marshall and probably sell the Princeton with the Celestion Seventy/80. The Swamp Thang may have 9 years old but I've never used it on a gig or that loud, so it should be as good as a new one. What are your thoughts about it? Thanks for your video, congratulations for your tone and hopefully soon I'll have my small DSL at home sounding close to yours!
Just through the swab thang in my trainer YVR 20 WR, replacing a Celestion greenback made in China, swamp thang rocks just had to add and overdrive pedal to make it complete, helped brighten it up a lot because the speaker is a bit on the dark side
Thanks Gino - I still have the Swampthang but did end up having to pair it with a V30 to some of my top end back. The Swampthang is definitely best suited for high gain apps. Rock on!
@@oldguyjammin9732 I've used quite a few eminence speakers in the past, all seem to color the sound in one way or the other. It really depends what amp you're using and personal taste. Right now I'm using celestion v-type and G12-75 in an x pattern 4x12, with a Marshall DSL 20 watt head. Lots of bottom end and sparkle on top.
@@oldguyjammin9732 cool man! V30s with a cranked marshall is awesome. Yes, I can get many sounds with my rig. Pretty much nails any metalica tone, past or present. Thankfully the head drops down to a measly 10 watts lol. The 1 watt Marshall dsl is killer. My buddy has one and it's bedroom bliss.
I haven’t tried the SThang with the DSL5 but it should sound pretty darn good I’d think. The dsl5 is plenty bright to compensate dark nature of the ST. Don’t skimp on cab size and I’d make it so you can remove a panel from the back so you have the option of closed or open cab. I had my ST in a closed cab but I’ve had people say it really shines in an open back.
I didn’t get around to an invader. Not being able to return speakers makes it hard to try many. For my Marshall I settled on a G12M (not H) Creamback and really like it. In my 2x12 I mixed a greenback and a vintage 30. The Swampthang needs to be mixed with something else because of the loss of top end sparkle. I found the WGS ET65 nice and the celestion V-type actually pretty good. You’re probably right about the invader.
Was thinkin u were gona try a texas heat like Shane has . The 1 thats in there now (S T ) seems to bring a good difference. Was wondering why swamp thing instead of heat. I hav this amp n use wgs g12,,c/s n 1x12 open bk. Also doin wet , dry thing w an egnater , same cab/et65 . Doin country, southern rock. 12g-cs makes it almost fender like n thats OK , im always lookin for a lil better. Wana try a wgs 12L. Thats after an ev L from the 70s. Lotta $ idk well see . Now whos the old guy ? LOL
Glenn Winburn - you got me, you are the OG champ! I went with the SwampT for the serious grip it has on the low end, massive magnet and higher wattage rating. The EVH and Marshall both have Drop B tuning sweetness and I wanted a speaker/cab for just that. For the cleaner / brighter tones (Egnater) I’ll use the Greenback loaded Peavey cab. The ST is pretty dark and I may look for something that has the same bass characteristics but a tad bit brighter, we’ll see \m/
I have stageright 15watt amp, same as you. I have a problem, I get really bad tinnitus from it. I think it might be the speaker but I’m not sure. I do have a but if hearing loss. Anyways what do you think? Should I chane the speaker out on it? I was considering a texas heat or swamp thang but can’t decide. Thanks man
Sorry to hear it, my cousin has tinnitus... drives him nuts. 1) turn it down, lol 2) check for a microphonic tube by gently tapping on each of the preamp tubes with the amp on and volume up where you normally play it, if you hear a distinctive “tink” come through the speaker you have a bad tube 3) of the Texas Heat and Swampthang I’d go with the Swampthang. Great bottom end and midrange, a little dark on the top end but in a good way :) best of luck to you!
Thanks man! Everyone I ask says the swamp thang if they have to choose one so I’ll probably go with that. Yeah tinnitus sucks super bad. I have to wear ear plugs sometimes when I play even at pretty low levels. Most people don’t realize how bad it sucks until it happens to them and by then it’s too late. I actually got it I think from playing that monoprice amp too loud in a really small room in my basement so I wouldn’t annoy my family. Thanks for the response! You got some chops man! Oh hey one last thing, the stageright amp says 8 or 16 ohm. Does it really matter which one I go with?
@@mikevega7740 I just put the 8ohm in my stageright 15. It is a serious upgrade. You won’t regret it. It sounds great! That 70/80 sucks ass, it gave me tinnitus that I still have after a year (probably permanent at this point). Anyways you’ll love it and wish you would’ve done it sooner.
Heyo! You have been a godsend when it comes to learning about my DSL40CR. I learned how to do a bias from you too lol, i have it set to 35 however I think i may drop it again to about 32-33. I’m trying to get an early brown sound, like the van halen 1 album. Is that possible with the DSL? Which speakers should I try for it?
The original bias was 39 and 36, so it was a bit out of sync and a little too fizzy for my liking. There is a bit of a difference at 35 but I i think i’ll drop it again to 32 to avoid all of the fizz
Well that’s great, I was gonna just quit but now I think I’ll hang in there, lol. If you tend towards harder rock or use drop tunings, I’d look at 3 speakers, DV-77, Swampthang or Texas Heat. They all have an incredible bottom end... tight and aggressive.
They both sounded good, but I feel like the swamp thing was a bit too dark, like you might have lost some versatility. If you just want to play metal then it would rock for sure. Also, if you do another comparison it would be helpful to edit the video so we could hear 5 or 10 seconds of one speaker, then immediately play the other, and flip back and forth a few times to really pinpoint the differences. Cheers from a new subscriber!
adamtwelve - you’ve got a good ear. It is just a tad darker and I lost some presence but luckily the Marshall has brights in reserve. I’m gonna let the SThang break in, then put the V-type back in and see how I like it. As a side note, I use the Marshall “cab” with my EVH head too and that situation the SThang really shines :) Thanks for the sub \m/ Stay tuned
666bleedthesky - it’s a fine instrument but HEAVY at 9.6 pounds. I think all the dark woods suck some of the twang out of the MIM tele pickups I put in it too. I ended up selling it and getting a Schecter PT Special. Almost 3 pounds lighter and twang for days with a P90 at the neck :)
Hell ya!... Dude I have those same g12s in my 4x12 Marshall cab, it's a 1960vintage a/b with particle board sides and top... It sounds OK, but those swamp things will be kick ass in there.....specially since I got my new archon 50 head today!!!...

I'm not great at putting it in to words but I highly recommend you would check it out especially with this amp. and I also don't have any 1st hand experience with the v type. just v30 , gt75 and cream back. all are excellent just all different flavors. I would say a cream back is kinda like a v30 and a greenback had a baby if that helps. kinda best of both worlds
An 8 ohm load in parallel with a 16 ohm load should be 24/2 or roughly a 12 ohm load. even still the Tube Rule of 2 over/under still has you covered regarding impedance.

The pickups were a bit hot, more like specials so I swapped them out with a vintage pair of actual MIM tele pups that I found on Reverb for $40. It’s super nice now and I’m selling the Modern Player... tired of dealing with it.
Brian Ewert sweet looking. I almost bought a similar one not to long back but the fret inlays were Wolf paws lol. Nice looking guitars.
Lyric Klein - they have both versions available now, dot inlay or paw. I went the way of the paw because of my affinity for my own little canine hero.
Nice review! I’m thinking about putting a eminence speaker in my dsl40. This makes me more confident that it’s a good idea. Thanks! 👍
The difference was so apparent I’m thinking about doing a better comparison. I’m sold on Eminence over WGS.
Oldguyjammin, Thanks for the reply! Ever tried a Eminence Texas Heat?
How are the mids in the Swamp Thang? Looking to put it in the exact same amp. I think the V type is great for blues and rock but it's crap for metal.
The mids and low end grit are great but you will lose a bit of top end sparkle. Keep the V type and perhaps build your own matching cab. You’ll end up with a mini stack that has the best of all worlds.
@@oldguyjammin9732 i might do that eventually. I can't stand the fizz with the vtype
@@chrisasmith75 - gotcha, putting a 12AY7 tube in the socket closest to the amp’s input jack (V1) and adjusting the bias down to 32 mV DC will help immensely. It’s a beast!
@@oldguyjammin9732 The bias of the power tubes?
@@chrisasmith75 - yep, worth checking. If the bias is ‘hot’ like upwards of 42 mV DC it really gets fizzy
Finally, someone does a video that isn't in freakn clean blues tone.
Swamp Thangs are ALWAYS killer for metal. 1 if the best ever.
ALL video demonstrations should do BOTH (clean and distorted) sounds so the listener will know what the speaker is best suited for !
A Jensen Tornado or Eminence Lil Texas will beef up the amp and are neodymium speakers. Very light.
put in a 15 inch speaker, i know DSL 40s have larger space, I upgraded my marshall DSL 15c with Rhapsody 300 watts speaker and it sounded huge
sfear6 - oh my gosh, that sounds absolutely nuts man \m/
it’s an 8ohms and it will sound more huge and open
Just through the swab thang in my trainer YVR 20 WR, replacing a Celestion greenback made in China, swamp thang rocks just had to add and overdrive pedal to make it complete, helped brighten it up a lot because the speaker is a bit on the dark side
it's a freakin beast, but you're right... it is a bit dark, so you will need to adjust the treble/presence. For Metal, it's essential!
Great review, well done! Thanks.
@@Sooflojoe - nice! I ended up pairing my ST with a V30 for a better top end. I bet your rig sounds awesome - DAMN! 20 watts through a 4x12 - \m/
I am thinking about making an external cab with a swamp thing to bring my DSL5-CR up a notch. Have you tried plugging the 5 watt into this guy?
I haven’t tried the SThang with the DSL5 but it should sound pretty darn good I’d think. The dsl5 is plenty bright to compensate dark nature of the ST. Don’t skimp on cab size and I’d make it so you can remove a panel from the back so you have the option of closed or open cab. I had my ST in a closed cab but I’ve had people say it really shines in an open back.
Seems like , u wanted to try a wgs invader , at some point . Wondering if u did and what u thot of it . Im in the market for a speaker myself . Thx .
9:35 for the SwampThang dirt \m/
BOTH!!
Swang Thang sounds awesome. Good job by the way. I like this kind of video, no drums, no second guitar, same riff, thats how you compare.
Just ordered the swamp thing and putting it in the stage right 15 watt tube amp. Keep hearing good things about this speaker
@@markkicksass2448 I keep hearing if you upgrade speaker it will sound better
@@oldguyjammin9732 You we’re going to quit? You mean making videos?
How are you liking that Wolf Tc-1 I see you've got hanging?
666bleedthesky - it’s a fine instrument but HEAVY at 9.6 pounds. I think all the dark woods suck some of the twang out of the MIM tele pickups I put in it too. I ended up selling it and getting a Schecter PT Special. Almost 3 pounds lighter and twang for days with a P90 at the neck :)
@@oldguyjammin9732 Right on, thanks for your feedback.
Hell ya!... Dude I have those same g12s in my 4x12 Marshall cab, it's a 1960vintage a/b with particle board sides and top... It sounds OK, but those swamp things will be kick ass in there.....specially since I got my new archon 50 head today!!!...
Michael Mitchell - right on man! Great for lower tunings, just make sure your amp has the treble and presence to push the highs out of those new Swamp Thangs - you will lose some highs \m/
@@oldguyjammin9732 hey man, thanks for commenting back!.... Ya the archin has a good eq and a strong presence knob along with a bright switch for both channels,.... Michael Mitchell - hey man, i was thinking... you might start with just two and see what you think cuz the G12s are actually pretty nice and will help bring out those nice chimey highs. Could be a really great tone...? Cheers
@@oldguyjammin9732 I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the suggestion!.. Take care.....
V-type is a Great speaker. Great Mix of v30 and greenback. The Swamp Thang sounds bigger and but is damper...less made-for-all sound...but great for gigantic guitar tones. If you wanna be the kid with the biggest sound on the block....swamp thang...
Paul Zen - well said :) I agree, V-Type is Very nice
Put a cream back in it and you’ll be happy for life. It’s awesome. Especially for this amp. I have this amp and a jcm 2000 tsl and a few others. Don’t claim to be a expert but do also have 2x12 with v30s and a 1960a cab with gt75s. The cream back really will make this amp sing. Swamp thing is very impressive . I might have to check out eminence my next go around.
In your opinions whats the main differences or improvements with the creamback comparing to the stock v type? Tnx
At first glance I thought you were Ed O Neal . 🤣👍
C19 mod with a vintage 30 works great on that amp
I sold it and got the dsl20 instead :) Marshalls like to have their masters UP and the 20 allowed for that... the 40 not so much - freakin’ loud man!
at 5:28 -> 8 OHM PARALLEL TO 16 OHM it's Not 12 OHMS...
An 8 ohm load in parallel with a 16 ohm load should be 24/2 or roughly a 12 ohm load. even still the Tube Rule of 2 over/under still has you covered regarding impedance.
@@oldguyjammin9732 Nope!
www.digikey.com/en/resources/conversion-calculators/conversion-calculator-parallel-and-series-resistor
Sorry for post digging.
16 ohm and 8 ohm in parallel is
16x8/(16+8)= 128/24 =5,33...
Nowhere near 12 ohms.
The formula is r1xr2 divided by r1+r2.
WGS Retro 30 and Reaper 30 watt are 👌

So glad I finally got away from Marshall DSL's......they still sound just as buzzy and shrill as I remember.

@@oldguyjammin9732 I have a Blackstar HT Club 50 MK2 ....a Marshall JCM800.....and a Blackstar JJN20. I run them through a 2x12 vertical cab. I tried every trick I knew to get rid of all the buzzy treble bite in my old Marshall JCM2000 DSL....swapped tubes around multiple times....tried a 6 band EQ.....tried different speaker cabs. Nothing seemed to make that much of a difference. I tried several variations of different DSL's and just decided well...I guess that's just how DSL's sound. That said....I really like the JCM800 and I really like the Blackstar amps. The Blackstar's are a darker amp for sure overall but they are so versatile that I can dial up just about any tone I want. To me they sound like a tube amp should. I have found as I get older that I am not a huge fan of amps with just a ton of gain that can't be dialed back. Sounds like two bees in a beer can to me....lol. But...everybody likes what they like and tone is subjective. BTW.....I have a empty 1x12 cab and was thinking about putting a Swamp Thang in it. Do you still have yours and do you still like it?
@@johnnyguitar65 - I’ve had a few blackstars including the HT50 head which I liked but got rid of because the foot switchable boost wasn’t adjustable and there was a pretty good jump in volume when switching between channel voices, but just yesterday was looking at the HT20 MKii :) ha ha. I hear you re fizz and buzz and pretty much always put lower gain tubes in right away but sounds like you did all that. I also will turn the bias voltage down when possible, that really helps. I do still have the Swamp beast but wouldn’t recommend it as a stand alone cab. Not bright enough for me, however when mixed with a V30 or some other speaker that has some upper end sparkle it does wonders at filling in the lower chugs - it’s a hard rock/metal speaker imo.
