    I just bought this amp and played it at a gig at the weekend. Wow! I read people saying the clean channel wasn't great? I rode the clean channel with the master about half way for most of the night, and jesus what a sound! Only needed a boost pedal to get a really nice amount of gain. The bottom end on this amp is unbelievable.

    • @martinboucher6225
      @martinboucher6225 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So,it stay clean at high volume?

    • @ryanteacher8134
      @ryanteacher8134 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@martinboucher6225 umm no, it stays somewhat clean but it has nice breakup. If you hit your strings hard it will sound distorted. Especially on a humbucker. Think ac/dc sound.

    I just got this amp about a month ago & have played a few gigs with it. Love it! In a classic rock band setting it cuts through nicely when needed ... and yes, the cleans are excellent. My first purchase immediately after getting this amp was a reverb pedal ... but I knew that going in based on several YT demos. I'm still dialing in my favorite settings but so far I'm very pleased with this amp. Thank you for this excellent overview of the amp!

    I'm a fender amp man, but this demo definitely has me interested in this very versatile and studio friendly Marshall.
    Great demo, sounded a treat on just about all the settings you tried. Will be checking out the specs for more detailed info on this little beauty!

    Cleans are surprisingly good. Overdrive is OK. The biggest complain is the Reverb. At max Reverb setting it’s barely audible. But that’s not a big deal because you can add a Reverb pedal in the FX loop. Great value for the Marshall sound.

      I think the DSL 40 C combo sounds better than this in the vintage jcm800 vintage metal tones sound way better to me on the DSL 40 C.🤷🏻‍♀️

    Very cool! I love the 6505 Peavey but I go back to Marshall for the classic stuff.

  • @keithmasey664
    @keithmasey664 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was considering that model, but went for the twenty head version as a friend is lending me a vintage 4x12, I'll be buying a 2x12 in the new year as the 4x12 vintage cab is both too heavy and too valuable to lug around! Great sounds. One of the reasons I went for the twenty is that it has a cabinet emulator minijack output, I think that it is strange that both the 40 combo and head lack this. When I was shopping for the amp I also looked closely at Blackstar and they make some great kit, the clean tone was actually nicer to my ears on the Blackstar, but for overdriven sounds the Marshall was the clear winner and the cleans are respectable. If I had deeper pockets and more space at home I would have bought them both! A lot of the guys who work at Blackstar are ex Marshall people, so they certainly know their shit when it comes to beautiful tones.

    • @4572dk
      @4572dk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you gig at all? I primarily play at home but if I started gigging I was wondering whether the 20 head and a 1x12 cab would be loud enough.

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@4572dk I have a 40, and I use it in 20w mode a lot. I'd say it's probably ok, so long as you don't want sparkly cleans. If you do, I'd suggest getting my secret weapon for low wattage amps - Mad Professor Agent Orange Underdrive. It's made for Marshalls, IMO. Makes mine get a Fender tone even in 20w mode with decent headroom. But honestely, I would just save the extra cash for the 40w model. It's just so much fuller sounding and has a fantastic speaker. It even sounds great at bedroom levels. They did a great job with the master volumes.

    Marshall trips me out the first dsl 40 had crappy reverb..and this one does too..why would they make such a great amp and put a useless reverb in it? Makes no sense.

      @DMR Productions I do the same with the effects loops in all my amps..The funny thing is the some Marshall's do have decent reverbs..like the mg and the code series..and they are cheaper than a dsl

    Good job! I've heard quite awful demos of this amp. This one sounds pretty good. Would you say the mic'd signal we hear on the vid is close to the real thing?

  • @tabodee
    @tabodee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tones! I have used the Samson C01 for years! The best mic in the world for under $100!. It really does do a nice job of micing the DSL in this video!. Did you add any of Logic's compression plugins or EQs after the recording? Sounds Great!

  • @elliottnunez1057
    @elliottnunez1057 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds SICK!! CAnt wait until I get mine!! Towards the end of the video got a decent metal tone out of it. I don't play much metal but, with that tone or running my Helix into it I'm sure I'll get enough of a Metal tone to get me through.

    I'd buy that amp just for the clean channel, in fact I might. How does it handle pedals?

    • @SimonSmithGuitar
      @SimonSmithGuitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really well

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the best pedal taking amp I've ever owned, tbh. The speaker is really good and the amp itself handles fuzz like a champ, which is how I usually rate amps as pedal platforms. The clean channel is really, really good for an el34 equipped amp for sure. Not quite as crystalline as my Fenders, obviously, but with an EQ pedal or an underdrive pedal, it holds its own. The low end is sooo nice, even warmer than my DRRI's low end.

    Hi, nice review!
    Did you compare the DSL40CR with the Silver Jubilee Combo 2525c?
    Which of the two Combo versions is best for Frusciante tones?
    I don't know which one to buy because I think the Jubilee Combo might sound too boxy.
    What is your opinion?

    • @spencerm5913
      @spencerm5913 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I keep mine with the master set around the 2 or 3 o'clock position and the channel volume set around the 9 o'clock position; all while in the 20 watt mode. It's definitely not quite, but it's not too loud to play inside a bedroom or garage.
      It sounds good when set up a little quieter, but it sounds best with the master cranked up higher. The 40cr probably isn't the best choice if you are in an apartment or have roommates that don't want a ton of noise.

    Looking at the 2018 dsl line for mostly in home use, but with a band or small gig from time to time. I've heard that the 70/80 speakers in the dsl20cr sound bad but the V in the dsl40cr is amazing. My biggest concern is does this still sound good at extremely low volume so I can play in an apartment at night, or should I look at the 20 and just plan on changing a speaker?

    • @gabrielchambers7393
      @gabrielchambers7393 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 70/80 speakers arent bad, they are just super bright and take a bit to break in. Thry great on gain channel. The only problem with them is the clean channel is extremely bright with them so you have to dial your treble or volume back a bit
