    Thank you for this tutorial. I am making boards for my son's for Christmas. I do not have all the bells and whistles used in the videos I have seen online. You are the first to actually make the board without even a table saw. Thank you so much!

      In the description, I linked a few cutting board kits that you can buy. At least one of them has some exotic wood in it.

    That was interesting to watch. I've always had a fear of table saws, especially being a person who loves playing guitar. I'm also sensitive to too much noise, so other than a band saw and drill press, I use nothing but hand tools now and have found it so much more enjoyable, and you can't loose a finger as quick or easy as you can on a table saw, as a matter of fact, you'd have to really want to loose one and work at it for a little to take off your own finger. I might add or recommend a couple of good hand planes to flatten things in short order, once you've learned to set the blades and a little good technique on using one.

    Those people saying it's easier to do with tools are right. It's also smarter and they're probably just jealous they don't do it themselves. It's like saying that it's not a real trip if you use a car.
    Man, great video demonstrating hand-craftsmanship.

      Thanks...There was some criticism over using S4S lumber...like, do you want me to chop down the trees with an axe and mill my own lumber with a saw too?

    Well done! I wouldn’t have the patience!
    For those that don’t have a shop. I do mine with out a work shop, just hand and power tools that I have. (I’m a carpenter) A circular saw a hand plane and an orbital sander does the trick. You just have to take time to get everything right before glue up and have your hand plane set up right.
    Cool channel 🤙

    I am offcourse way to late, but im glad I saw this video
    i am going to buy a planer thicknesser combo soon, because most of my wood is free, rough wood
    My budget is pretty low though, so it will only have a width of 20 cm input, and i dont have a table saw
    Your video gave me all the information i need to make my own cutting boards
    Your effort is not in vain!

      Nice, just make sure you don't run endgrain cutting boards through a planer. Some people will do it but it can turn out very badly.

    Everything a power tool can do, hand tools can do as well, just takes more skill, patience and time. Power tools exist to make the job easier, not to flex on others about your deep pockets. It took me three weeks to make chess set, board with two drawers to hold all the pieces, with hand tools. If I had the ability to use power tools and machines I have in the shop, without glue up and finishing, it would have been done in a day. Of course, one cannot use all the machines in an apartment building, so hand tools are the only way to go. It took a lot of work, elbow grease, sweat, blood and tears. But all in all, it was fun and rewarding when i presented it as a Christmas gift to a friend who loves it.

    • @slightlycrookedworkshop
      @slightlycrookedworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the point of this video. I don't think people use expensive tools to "flex" on others, they use them to speed up the building process.

    • @ajuric4606
      @ajuric4606 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@slightlycrookedworkshop I know they don't use power tools and big machines to flex, thing is, some of those who don't have them, think they do. It's how I interpret those comments. I wrote the same thing in my comment you did, just a bit longer and with an example of my own work and experience

    Holy shit dude, I seriously congratulate you for doing this with hand tools only, but you really need to get a good plane. You could have saved a week of work and sanding with a plane (and old stanley for example, cheap and perfect. However, you do need it extra sharp all the time for this), a shooting board and a thicknessing jig.
    I also did this project in a bigger version using hand tools only (I would love to have a jointer, a planner and a bandsaw, but i just don't have space) and enjoyed it, with almost no sanding at all (just a little at the end). A lot of sawing (not that much either), planing and elbow grease, but still had fun, and I do want to say thank you for filming this since it is true that most people get discouraged when they see all this amazing things and think they need a shop full of machines to do them, however I do have to say that you can get the same effect wih all that sanding you did, my arm hurts just to think about it.
    I encourage you to get a plane and a good hand saw and triying this again using the things that I named you. It might still take a little longer (seriously, a little, not too much) than using power tools but you'll enjoy it so much.

      I have a decent hand plane but I rarely use it. I also have a thickness planer, table saw, etc... but the point was being able to make all these things without expensive tools since so many people complain about that. I doubt I'll be trying to do this by hand again because I stopped having fun when making the second round of cuts.

    • @Claudisimooo
      @Claudisimooo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, my point exactly. People can get decent planes very cheap today, I can't believe you did this without one, that must have required A LOT of patience.
      When I did mine I didn't use a miter box for the cuts, just a hand saw with a knife line (i'm talking about after the first round of gluing), wich allowed me to cut the entire lines that I wanted with no need to divide them into pieces, just like using a table saw. After that I went to a ticknessing jig for the hand plane, that's a lot of work saved. The reason I'm telling you this is because it's sad to read that you got so discouraged to do things like this with hand tools

    Nice cutting board!! A proper saw and smoothing plane would have made it WAY easier for you lol. But still nice work!!

  • @adamberry71
    @adamberry71 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    by starting with the perfectly square boards all you did was have someone else use power tools. Making a cutting board using only hand tools means you have to make all the rip cuts perfectly so you can get a solid glue up.

    • @slightlycrookedworkshop
      @slightlycrookedworkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah...but you didn't need to buy the tools to do it, which is the point. Unless you're using a saw to cut down a tree and then cut it into boards...

    That was an interesting challenge. I think your conclusion that you don't recommend it would be well heeded. Although I suspect that if you had used a random orbital sander instead of hand sanding, you wouldn't have been so downtrodden at the end.

      I bought it at Menards. I've noticed that the Orange and Blue big box stores have maple from time to time. You can also order it from either of those stores. You can also get a cutting board kit on Amazon: amzn.to/3GJOwtp

    I was at a sale this year to buy a small farm with a house on it just to rent out , the owner was a cabinet maker he and his wife were in nursing home, all-his tools were in the basement of a shop, downstairs that were steep, i didn’t win the bid for the place , but the machines didn’t bring nothing because they had to be removed in 24 hrs, or bidder had to pay for professional service to remove them, the planner only brought $5.00 ! But it was a commercial unit and looked like it weighs 1000 lbs, or more wish I had bought the place !

    I know I'm a bit late here. You mention not wanting to do this again with only hand tools. If someone has a orbital sander and a sliding miter saw, do you think this is more reasonable ?

    • @slightlycrookedworkshop
      @slightlycrookedworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely more reasonable. I would use a high tooth blade, maybe 80T, otherwise you'll have tearout down each row of the cutting board. Using cauls when clamping is a fantastic idea and should drastically reduce the amount of sanding. When you sand, start out with 60 grit, maybe even 40 grit.
