The Pyongyang Metro (Korean: 평양 지하철도; MR: P'yŏngyang Chihach'ŏlto) is the rapid transit system in the North Korean capital Pyongyang. It consists of two lines: the Chollima Line, which runs north from Puhŭng Station on the banks of the Taedong River to Pulgŭnbyŏl Station, and the Hyŏksin Line, which runs from Kwangbok Station in the southwest to Ragwŏn Station in the northeast. The two lines intersect at Chŏnu Station.
Daily ridership is estimated to be between 300,000 and 700,000. Structural engineering of the Metro was completed by North Korea, with rolling stock and related electronic equipment imported from China.This was later replaced with rolling stock acquired from Germany.

These wagons were build for West-Berlin, Germany as Model D (1957-1965) later sold to East Germany (German Democratic Republic) and after reunification of Germany there were sold to Pyongyang in 1996

Fun Fact: North Korea uses very old Trains from Berlin, Germany.

@@NS-pr8is The trains are from West Berlin. There were also trains from East Berlin in the late 1990s, but they are not operating on the metro network anymore. Those trains are used as passenger trains in the North Korean villages nowadays.

Btw, I saw a documentary about it and some of the wagons still have the Graffiti scratched on the windows.

Cari buku A Capitalist in North Korea karya Felix Abt. Di sana dipaparkan dengan sangat jelas sisi lain dari Korea Utara. Pokoknya orang-orang macam Jaka Parker sama Felix Abt inilah yang udah "berjasa" memaparkan Korea Utara dengan sudut pandang lain yang nggak pernah diliput media mainstream. Penggambaran di Crash Landing on You sedikit banyak sudah cukup menggambarkan keadaan di Korea Utara. Dari mulai pemadaman listrik masif, pasar rakyat, berkonsultasi ke peramal sambil main kucing-kucingan sama pejabat (yang ternyata pejabatnya sendiri juga suka minta jasa peramal), sampai kehidupan rakyat biasa yang sebenarnya nggak bisa dibilang makmur, tapi ya juga nggak seburuk yang digambarkan media-media mainstream.

Go to ukraine. They only have escalators, because the metros are mostly 60 - 70 meters deep. Kyiv has the deepest metro station with 105,5 meters

Politics aside, I find it impressive how beautiful the railway stations in North Korea look. They not only look clean, but the murals and decorations are very stunning to look at. It's akin to late 19th century art we have in Europe really.
Modern day metro stations in the Western world are incredibly bland, almost depressing to look at. To see this is quite literally from another world. Wish they'd take care of the metro infrastructure like that here, instead of just making them ugly bunkers.

If you think that N.K. is so great, I think that you should go live there. To really get the North Korean experience, go live in a village outside of Pyongyang with the locals then tell me how nice North Korea is.

@@Piano3r Those metro stations were built by North Korean prisoners who were accused of petty crimes that had no mal intent or negative impact on their country. Most of those people who built those stations were accused of crimes they never committed. So, when they mentioned how nice those stations look, the people who built them were forced to make them look nice otherwise they and also their families could die in a firing squad by North Korea's police or military. Yeah, really great huh? You sound like a smug, arrogant wiseguy wjo who thinks he knows everything about foreign affairs but you probably never stepped outside of your own liberal country's utopian society.

The way the stations are decorated reminds me a bit of the Moscow metro, which is pretty nice. The cars are nice and clean considering their age, but they should see about replacing these lights.
