Gerber Flatiron Cleaver: Fad or Fabulous

  • Let's take a look at something new to the show: a folding cleaver. Arriving in the form of the Gerber Flatiron, it is a cool knife. It looks technical and will make a decent food preparation blade. We consider the its popularity as an EDC blade too and mention some others in the same vein, there's some cool ones (see below). The finishing on this Gerber knife is fantastic and it has some surprising upgrades like an over travel stop and wadeability with ties. Not shown in the video but very cool is the new BHQ version coming out in D2 steel with gray Micarta scales. For its low price it might be worth a foray into something completely new and different for your EDC load out.

    Pro Tip: use fingernail clippers to trim those Zip Ties. Makes them flush and no need to melt anything...unless you just like fire, then rock on. TNP Knife Show continues!

    Late comment but I work in a lumberyard and EDC this knife every day. I own several quality knives, Spyderco, Emerson, etc. This knife for work has been excellent! Extremely good quality for the price, tough as hell, and I seriously abuse this thing, it takes the punishment well. Yes it's heavy but hey, we're guys right? I never hesitate to hand it to someone no matter what they're cutting, I don't even ask. Every few days run it through the sharpener and bam, it's good to go. Even wash it and use it for food sometimes.

    I got one just after they came out. I tried to take it apart but the torx screws were far too tight and I ended up just stripping the hardware. I sent it back thinking I may be able to get a better one. The replacement had the same problem. Sent back a second time and have just decided that this knife is not for taking apart.

      @HesperianHorsePower 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let’s be honest... there are tons of EDC TH-cam pages and even more blogs, etc. everyone’s an expert bla bla bla!
      I bet 90%+ of guys who carry a pocket knife rarely even use it once a month much less every day. Most of the time these knives are used to cut along the blade and the points are rarely if ever used. That being said a cleaver design makes sense. They’re sturdy and sharp and will work for nearly everything an “EDC master” would need a knife for. Most EDC stuff lasts in a guys pocket until the next Uber cool piece of rarely used equipment comes along

    This knife I bought a few months ago bought it on amazon for about what nutan bought it for. I saw this thing thought it was a cool looking knife definitely a first kind of cool. And it is my edc knife among others. But it has a nice edge i have sharpened it myself a few times and its great for opening up boxes. I do use it for cutting zips at my work i am a mechanic so it gets used alot. But its funky as nutan has said. I think its great. I have the index gerber makes and its nothing like this not bad and not better.

    I bought a "truck stop" version of this that is bigger and better than the Gerber believe it or not. Has a nice flipper on it too! One I got it epic sharp, now it is pretty good. I take it as my "gym parking lot" knife. $8 at a thrift store, handle scale is wood not G10 is the only thing not better than the Gerber.

  • @anthonyswarthout6577
    @anthonyswarthout6577 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm pretty sure this was meant for food prep. That's what I use mine for and if you look just in front of the clip toward the blade there is a recess in the handle. In that recess is the rest of the frame but it makes a ledge that if you put the tip of your right ring finger on that recess and kind of cradle the rest of the knife in your hand instead of doing a full grip you can really get a good chopping action goin on

    • @anthonyswarthout6577
      @anthonyswarthout6577 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    i bought three of these - and ended up returning ALL of them. I really wanted to own and carry this knife. love the design and the concept (i'm a sucker for large-choil blades) - the execution is TERRIBLE. aside from the 7cr steel they use, the quality control on this thing is non-existent. the first one i bought had lock-up so early, i was afraid to use it. the second had lock-up so late, i was concerned about it's longevity. the third had a blade blank cut at about 10 degrees off-center... all three had very poor centering, and numerous cosmetic flaws. all three were incredibly dirty/grimy inside. wtf??? i'll probably take a look at the D2 version coming soon, but i am skeptical about the manufacture of this blade/company. very disappointing, gerber! as always, thanks for posting the review.

    FAD PURE FAD it may be good for sertain specialized jobs but it lacks flexability for many jobs, if the crap really truelly does hit the perverbial fan I sure as heel don't want to carry away into my whole gear needs a "specialized" blade to that degree, I want a couple or so knives that can "flex" into many different roles with a fair degree of ability in any of them and that means a more time proven "flexable" design such as drop point or clip point or something fairly similar, and though I may carry a folding knive as a convenience in my pocket I will NEVER use ANY form or brand of folding kinife as my depend on it for support to keep me alive knife, for that I'm going to only depend on fixed blade knives because no matter how good any folder is said to be they are NEVER going to be as durable/dependable as a knive with absolutely no moving parts or areas to fail, also that knife MUST be of the UTMOST premium materials both in terms or durability and simplicity (I.E no fancy high tech plastic type handles but things like time proven G10 or Micarta types that as I say have MANY years of track record to back them), and the steels used MUST be of the ABSOLUTE most durable to be had even at the sacrifice of some edge holding and stain resistance, A stained or slightly rusted and less than perfectly sharp knife or even slightly bent knife is still way better than one that has snapped in half and/or you can't resharpen without a bunch of special crap and a bunch of time, then as much as the knife a highest quality sheath is of fairly high importance, I love nice leather but in an utmost survival situation the leather has no place, I want the highest quality heaviest gauge toughest Kydex money can buy put together with the utmost strength and care even if it kinda looks like crap, pretty ain't going to keep you alive when the dip hits the fan, neither is fads and pretty boy bullshit.

    Why would you want an EDC that has no tip... you cannot stab with it. I don’t get the point of these knives.. if you just get a sheep’s foot style blade it will be a good slicer and still have good tip for stabbing. I guess what I’m getting at is this is an absolutely terrible knife for the
    If I could only have one folding blade pocket knife” category.. it doesn’t get much worse.
