I completely agree! I learn about how regular families are living in a big urban centre with bikes. I also feel like I'm getting to know NYC a little better by watching these on-the-road cargo-bike trips.
Your in person ride alongs or conversations are some of your best work. There are only so many tech thing you can talk about in a bike review. Hats off to these Mom's, their children are going to better from their moxy.
I made the mistake of claiming the right of way with a truck - he was at a stop sign trying to turn right- i was on the sidewalk on an adult trike going straight across without a stop signal of any kind. He was crowding me all the way across while his 'co-pilot' leered at me. Please keep making your videos - they renew my riding spirit, which at my age needs serious support.
Yes,… More of these real-life interviews with roving biking advocates. I roam around town and try to talk to everyone and anyone. Bikes open the doorway to ☮️ & 💞
This is so great! City biking can be scary, but never underestimate the impact you can have on other people simply by showing them that it can be done! Other Moms and Dads driving by in their cars can get inspired by seeing other families on bikes. Chris, thanks for featuring Maddy’s story. And Maddy, you are a rock star! Keep it up!
I think these rolling interviews, as you called it, are a great idea. I don’t think you need a car in NYC. I worked there for a while back in the 90s and I loved it, but you don’t need a car and a bicycle or an e-bike is so much better. NYC does have a unique energy as you say, it is unlike any other US city. I’m in Brighton, south of London. I lived in London for many years actually. You don’t need a car in London or Brighton as the public transport is good enough.
Awesome interview. Perfect example of how walking and bicycling enrich the city. We are another proud cargo biking family here in Harlem and I can’t wait to see more people join in the fun.
Very nice episode. Thr running dialog/discussion was great! I'm glad to see the ebike passion is spreading. I'm a recent convert, and find the ebilke is great for keeping us 'older' folks active. I've got a compact Tern and use it while RVing. It's great for exploring parks and neighborhoods, and running to laundromats and grocery stores. Fewer car trips is a good thing on several fronts.
I'm retired and live in UK,watch your video's, I have a Gazelle ultimate t10, and a Brompton. These tours of New York are great,I've always wanted to visit the US especially New York, the bike view of the street's give you a feel of what it's like.So keep them coming.
I definitely like the bike ride interviews. Great way to see NY. I ride a mountain eBike and it is amazing to me how many people start talking to me about eBikes when I am out riding. Keep up the great work, you bring up some interesting points about bike parking and bike lanes. I live in Colorado and I am hopeful that eBikes become even more popular here.
I understand the E-bikes for older people (50 years and older) but for younger people it is really not necessary in my opinion. A normal bike is suited for most circumstances.
@@Koen030NL I use my ebike for commuting. I got to ride uphill in the morning, which would not work with a normal bike. I mean I can get up the hill, but I don’t have a shower at work, so that’s no option if I have to meet with clients or coworkers. Without the ebike my only other option is my car.
Ya Hay Chris Love these videos keep them coming I used to work in New York City I retired about seven years ago and it just good to see the city coming back alive. I feel like taking my bike on the Long Island Railroad and riding around central park for a couple hours thanks again.
Great viewing, Propel. I live in a city apartment and park my E-Bike on my balcony. We have many bike paths around Brisbane Australia. We downsized back to 1 car. We walk and bike everywhere. Our Ram is for touring and towing our van and our bikes go with us.
Having moved from London to the Netherlands, seeing you ride these bakfiets ( cargo bikes) just makes me glad I can ride mine somewhere safely with my 2 kids in. Not that I have a nice one, mine is shocking haha. But that's how I can afford the other 6 bikes 🙂
Excellent video! I hired a electric cargo bike in London and me, my wife and kids spent the whole day sightseeing on a cargo bike and a regular push bike. I'm currently in the process of purchasing my own cargo bike. This channel is ace!
Im going to be using a come along to take my kid to daycare and home so i can continue to commute with my bike. Daycare said no issues leaving the trailer there when i drop them off
I really watched it until the end and loved it. It let me realize that is no different at all in NY: all you were talking about is so true and also my/our experience. Cheers from Vienna/Wien/Austria - or currently Paris (we were taking the Urban Arrow with us… and our Bromptons - and a kids bike).
Hello Propel, a very well done video, a very interesting gathering, all the ones I have seen I have enjoyed with a very nice tour of New York, I like them very much, I hope you do more this type of tours, greetings and thank you very much for these moments 😊.
Chris, you are a fabulous talker, your film's are getting better all the time, good image and great sound, keep up the good work, greetings from Belgium,R&M culture biker
great video of how family city biking can be done. I live in Calgary, Ab. I have owned an electric conversion to a mountian bike to be able to tow a trailer to get my son to day care and to get groceries. That set up did not work well in deep snow or either the lithium battery would die or the tires on the trailer would go flat. I then bought a masden bike with a rear bucket. It did not like snow either so when my son was in grade 1, I bought a Yuba Mondo cargo bike and that has been my sole transportation since for twelve years. Yes sometimes it was difficult to pack my son in when it was minus 25 and be able to get him to day care but not having the expense of a car has allowed me to live comfortably on one income.
I have a mid-tail cargo bike on order for me and my daughter. I am way out of practice (like decades) so I have been using Citi Bike to brush up on my skills. The first time, I fell twice and crashed into my son's bike once. The second time I was scared to start but did a lot better. I was feeling discouraged, especially watching a video of someone so confidently riding with a child on the street, which I can't imagine, but then you mentioned falling and needing practice and it made me feel better. :) I just wish Citi Bike covered my neighborhood. I have to take a train to practice biking.
I actually like these bike rides. Interesting guests and we get to see cities from a whole new perspective. And my respect to Maddy, going from inexperienced bike rider to riding in New York on a big cargo bike with the kids in on time.
Very intriguing conversation. Especially as you discussed how her children react to time on the bike versus car rides. But more importantly because of being on the bike the interaction she has with the community around her. For to long in the States we drive from here to there park in the garage and don't have interaction with neighbors and others and it has drastically affected our relationships! Great work Chris how is your family enjoying the move back to New York?
These rides are so nice to see, kind of shocked by the speed though: lots of throttle driven high speed "bikes" and kick-scooters FYI: we Dutch make, deliver and ride the babies on our bakfiets/transport bike, with tulips in front on our wooden clogs to our windmill hahaha.. [never heard of a new mom taking her bike from hospital to home, maybe also because in getting to the hospital the bike stays at home or about a quarter of births are done at home?]
Totally cool interview, both in image as in the words. Supercool to see the city this way. And the little one just enjoying herself and chilling in the front!
I can't figure out for the life of me why more people in Southern California don't ride bikes. The weather is perfect for being out in the open and bikes are far better for taking a quick run to the store than a huge fuel-guzzling car.
In LA traffic, I think a biker’s lifespan would be measured in minutes. I used to live in northern California, 50 years ago. Today, if I owned Hell and LA, I’d live in Hell and rent out LA.
I think there are two primary reasons, culture and infrastructure. The love affair with the car started in LA and so did the highways. I think SoCal is beginning to learn that might have given up a good thing when they tore up their renowned bike lanes and got rid of the street cars. It’s not easy to come back from that. It seems that there is definitely a dissenting group favoring the bike and it’s growing all the time. It’s gotten a big shot in the arm and I’m optimistic it will hold.
@@jackvoss175 Well, San Diego traffic is almost as bad in some parts. There's still no excuse for not biking other than the California mentality that everyone must travel while wearing sunglasses and sit behind the wheel of a humungous SUV or get out.
I think zoning and sprawling might have a lot to do with that. Utilitarian cycling is more attractive if you have nearby places to go, like shops or schools etc.
Quick idea storming session, so with the new mass numbers of people from using bikes and things for their daily life, I’m beginning to realise the great idea of having a utilising tool like a cargo bike or ebike readily available. The convenience of having it as soon as it’s needed, with very humanitarian immersing ways of getting to places is noticeably better for the local environment and communities. So here’s my idea: setup a similar thing to Cargoroo Public Hire cargobikes, which operate on the same bike that the Novich family uses in this video, to be setup at somewhere like the Moynihan Train Hall or outside of a major train station. The best thing with these ridecasts is that the spontaneous interaction provides for amazing advocating - that much that when organised into a playlist to give to a potential audience, they’re great at persuading people to think about how we can revolutionise our lives. (bare in mind I don’t live in the states, I live the other side of the Atlantic, so the logistics of me being involved directly with the installation of this would not be feasible, However would still be awesome to do)
Speaking of which, the bike/train travel topic might be something you can talk about on these ridecasts, as all this talk with the Amtrak updates and the possibilities found in rail got me excited and intrigued as to our global communal paradigm shift to creating sustainable developments in lifestyle
In 1980 I drove in NYC whilst on holiday. The traffic was incredible. I would never have considered cycling there. ( I live in Staffordshire, England). I am amazed that a 5’ woman is confidently owning the road and cycling with amazing pzazz. In NYC. Blazing the way! Much power to you!
I totally enjoy these conversational riding videos. Definitely do more of them. Need more cameras though; front, side, low to the ground near the wheel. Get 10 GoPros and clamp those puppies everywhere! (My apologies to the video editor)
5:20 same in Germany! Having used a trailer with kids inside and the overtaking cars were always sooo close. With the Urban Arrow not anymore. And I guess it is indeed the fear of scratches on the cars.

Great interview “by bike” and it’s a very good way to educate people on utilizing bikes for transportation. I’ll be pushing it out on our city Fb page.
I like these ride chat videos. Its amazing how safe New York looks to bike in. I live in a city of 200k people and the drivers scare the heck out of me, theyre rude, ignorant and dont share the road. The few bike lanes we have are mostly parking lots infront of a house 🤦
Yeah, I fealt that too. I had a bullitt rented and it had a loading box in the front. It didnt make the bike more broad than before, but suddenly the car keep way more distance , dont fail to yield that often. Its like you are now a real vehicle for some drivers.
Awesome video. This is what we been looking for , we are ebike owners and are looking to move to ny n take our ebikes and sell our car. Its nice to hear an interview of how a family bikes through the city on day to day baises. Thanl you sir for this. Is awesome for families
I got my bike less than a week ago. Six seconds into my first ride, I bonked off a brick beam at 2 mph. I rode to a doctor yesterday and got a little too much acceleration down a hill and showed up to my appt with a fresh raspberry on my elbow. Having a lot of fun otherwise lol. Wish we had bike rooms in my part of the country, but cars are king here in the suburbs. We're lucky to have a bike rack every 10th store, and even then it's only for one bike.
'Love this!!! Thanks! 'Very cool mom! "Utilitarian Biking" is what a friend calls it, and that terminology resonates well with me too. Would like to see the daughter's helmet on a little straighter / more-securely... 'challenging, i know... 'must be some better way(s) to accomplish that(?). I don't have a kid, but my (former) Malamute used to go everywhere with me in her trailer / chariot. She often wore goggles, but not a helmet ... except maybe once, and mostly just for the photo op'.
I'm watching this in the middle of a raging thunderstorm. So how do you cope when you have to get the kids somewhere in such awful weather? Loving these trips around your city (I'm a Brit using an e-bike as my stealth mobility vehicle)
Cargo bikes have accessories that'll protect your kids from rain. As for yourself, the driver, just use the poncho or raincoat. And if it's so bad that it seems unsafe you rent a car from car sharing service.
@@GregVidua I was always jealous of my kids riding along comfortably in the tent which we had on the bike, they were there snuggly outside of the rain and wind.
You just see endless rows and rows of parked cars taking up huge amounts of space. I'd bet if they were all removed there would be miles of extra space.
Right, it's so frustrating how drivers think they own the road and act so inconvenienced by a little bike here and there. Dude, bikes take up so much less space when in use AND all the more so when not in use. Why do drivers feel entitled to take up so much space and begrudge bikers from taking up almost no space at all?
I live in central PA, very suburban area. I just drove my SUV to Harbor Freight to buy a chain saw, about three miles from home. Could I have gone on a cargo bike? Probably right? Is this the future?
The sharrow marks lanes that are both for cars and bikes, which is a way to say it's a lane just for cars. It's one step below not having bike infrastructure at all. A sharrow only works on a street with very little traffic where cars don't want to go faster than 15-20 mph anyway. Otherwise the performance envelope isn't compatible. A long john cost enough that if you have to ask how much they cost you probably can't afford one. Long John bikes frequently have a reclined seat tube, so the rider can reach the ground from the seat to help stabilize a tall heavy load. Such as are found on long tail bikes, which normally have steep seat tubes for a high riding position. They really need lower seats so the rider doesn't fall over at stops.
My town recently maintained the traffic lights at the entrance to my housing estate from a major 4 lane tributary into the centre of town. They provided a stop space for bikes. There's no way I'd consider riding on that road as its too busy and too fast.
In Belgium babies are allowed to ride a bicycle at 6 month when they can sit and support their neck. It is also about schocks that bicycles give. Not many cargo bikes have suspension. Cars are mostly softer with suspension. But if you havé that And maybe the maxi cosi adapter had some suspension or something it would be no problem
Ugh, the public transportation elevators. We lived in SF and Bart/Muni elevators were SO disgusting, rarely worked, and were always down a dark, creepy hallway. Always felt incredibly unsafe.
Thanks so much for watching!!

I like Chris' little YEEEAAAA in response to the girl's excitable scream. hahahah
love the conversation, and u get a lot of information...more of this please...
You are such a good spokesperson for the ebike community! Love the interviews.
I wonder how many people in Haarlem (Netherlands) are watching this.
☺️
So I went to Instagram and entered cargo bike mama... and it's like checking for Jane Smith. So many of them! That was a nice surprise.
I love these videos where you’re talking and riding!
Hey Propel.. start a new interview segment called :
“Cyclists on cargo bikes with kids”
Like the Comedians in cars having coffee..
Funny you should say that. I had a very similar idea which I have been developing and you should see more in this direction soon
I live in central PA, very suburban area. I just drove my SUV to Harbor Freight to buy a chain saw, about three miles from home. Could I have gone on a cargo bike? Probably right? Is this the future?
Nice video Chris, Maddy you’re quite the lady and momma! I just followed on instagram. Keep the going Chris!
Wife wanted to cargobike kids to nursery. I stopped her, the roads here are a nightmare, everybody using cars unnecessarily :\
Great informative video about cargo e-bikes. I would like a smaller one to ride with my toy dogs. Very entertaining video as well.
Loved this ,awesome vid 👏🏻👏🏻 love your channel 👍🏻
Love this series, you should consider doing one in bad weather to show just how it's delt with on an ebike.
Loving this series! MORE CAMERAS!!!!!
Oh thank god I'm a cool mom. I didn't know I was a mom but at least I'm a cool one 😎
😂
Came here from your NJB video. It took a minute to realize you meant Harlem and not Haarlem.
Should (have)use pillows in the box to soften the ride & a natural airbag as well for the kid, just my thought😊
This was amazing and def subscribed to that insta even though I'm in Louisiana lol
Chris, you need to come down to Perth Western Australia, and join me for a ride around the Swan River :)
I would love that!
@@Propelbikes great
Ugh, the public transportation elevators. We lived in SF and Bart/Muni elevators were SO disgusting, rarely worked, and were always down a dark, creepy hallway. Always felt incredibly unsafe.
Oh she’s definitely a New Yorker because of the: ‘fo shure‘ :)
