Stunningly innovative choreography! Tchaikovsky's score is magnificently well played! Ingenious blocking, timing and tempo. It's actually exhilarating to watch. Kudos to Matthew Bourne!
I watched this live last night and I have woken up today with some sort of enchantment surrounding me like an ethereal sparkly mist.. I will never be over the fairies' solos for baby aurora against the backdrop of a full moon... Magical is an understatement
Absolutely incredible! As an ex ballet dancer, I was worried about this new take on Petipa’s well loved timeless masterpiece but as usual Mr. Bourne has turned it into something exciting and truly exceptional. Thanks to whoever has uploaded it here. You have made my day!
This is my favorite show of all time! I have always had some issues with the classical sleeping beauty version. The story is moving too slowly, there is no real love story and sometimes the music felt too dark for what was happening on stage, for example the opening scene, Aurora's first variation and the polonaise in the last act. If you listen to some of this music without context, it really sounds gothic. Matthew Bourne has fixed all of this by introducing vampires and Carabosses son into the show, and now the story matches the music perfectly! The dance style I love the most is in between ballet and modern, and when I saw this as a twelve year old, something fell into place. This lyrical dance style here is absolutely my type of dancing, it tells a story with each step. There is no need for point shoes or ballet pantomime. Bravo to the cast they are amazing!
@@heathermurgatroyd9164 Hi Heather. My wife, teenage granddaughter and myself saw it in Nottingham last week. It was terrific - we all absolutely loved it!
"...The dance style I love the most is in between ballet and modern..." That's how contemporary ballet is usually described, as a blend of ballet and modern. The torso & arms are often more like ballet - even when doing floor work - whereas the leg movements typically more align with the movements you'll find in modern dance. Random fact: Ballet originated as a form of sacred dance performed by Jesuit monks. It became a secular activity meant to be put on for entertainment due to France's kings bringing it to court. Edit: turned contemporary dance/ballet into just contemporary ballet
@@crackle6875 Thanks for the explanation! That's interesting I thought this dance style was called lyrical. Is there a difference? You just made me extremely happy. Saw this show for the first time on PBS years ago and fell instantly in love. So wonderful to see it again after so long.
There are only a few words left for such a splendid performance: a fantastic staging, a more than interesting dramaturgy, especially the fight against evil, a brilliant theatrical dance performance with this effective choreography.
Fabulous! Just stunning performance! It’s not for traditional ballet enthusiasts or those who are too “simple” to understand the relevant, deeper implications of the story line. This is not just a ballet. It is a display the ageless battle between the forces of good vs evil in a most contemporary context, in my opinion. Love the contemporary choreography to this classic ballet. Natural, funny, charming and believable. Bravo! This production will appeal to a broader audience, I believe…

His transformation of the iconic Rose Adagio into a rapturous pas de deux is very effective, right up totheend, where it shifts into a melodramatic plot point.
Thank you so much for posting this, I have been dying to see this production ever since I saw some clips. I enjoyed this version and love to see new takes on older classic ballets.
Notice these parallels between 22:25 and 53:57, 5:51 and 30:44, 29:48 and 1:19:45 Also the fact she really shead a tear at 1:37:53 shows how emotional this was for Hannah Vassallo. Just amazing!
I really did not expect to like this but was curious. I fell in love with Hannah Vassallo (Aurora) the minute she walked onstage and gradually got drawn in. I could have lived without the violent apotheosis, which hints at an extremely complex backstory between Carabosse's family and "Count Lilac"'s, and without the wholesale slaughter of Tchaikovsky's score, but the production is gorgeous and Bourne really cashes in on themes of sacred (or romantic) vs profane/possessive love. Aurora's first dance with Caradoc is combative and spiky, almost abusive, while her dance with "Leo" (whom Caradoc frames for Aurora's keeling over), danced to the Rose Adagio , moves organically and fluidly through the music. Truly effective was the scene (slight spoiler) where Caradoc is kissing the recumbent Aurora, trying to will true love's kiss into existence, then lets Leo kiss her only to have his goon squad drag him off once she awakens. ("See, *I* am your true love!"). I'll never prefer it to Petipa, but the company looks great, and it's a more fully realized plot than those of some of his other full-lengths. Thanks for posting!
Her dance with Caradoc, is a seduction dance that she's not ready to comprehend. She has appeal but she doesn't know it and is attracted but frightened at the same time. He's all about the seduction and she's bewildered. I love it. They both act brilliantly.
I am fan of traditional ballet but this a diferent and absolutely stunning version of the Tchaikovsky ballet with a gorgeous perfomance.. so I can say I love it ♥🌚👏👏👏
the puppeteering of the baby is crazy!! my brain could not comprehend that they hadn't somehow trained a real baby wowow this whole production is blowing my mind
What an opening scene, my goodness. Love the puppet, extraordinary. Its all very lovely but this is lyrical dance, not ballet therefore they cannot be compared. This is on a different level, lyrical and folk dance, totally different interpretation. And yes die hard ballet fans will probably cry because Tchaikovsky's music begs for the dance to soar with it to the same level!!!
Bourne certainly transforms the 4th act from a stilted ceremony into a narratively exciting experience. Not entirely sure about the details...why exactly Carabose's minion turns on him, etc. But the overall effect definitely morphs formal ritual into actual theater. I still prefer Bourne's Swan Lake, but this one is definitely worth a watch. And such incandescent dancing talent!
Gorgeous and amazing❤ Their dancing and acting expresses Tchaikovsky's beautiful music and the story just so powerfully. This company is small, so each dancer had a phenomenal amount of dancing and acting. Particularly Aurora, Leo her true love and the lilac fairy/ Count Lilac all were amazing performer's and lived and breathed their characters, absolutely magical. Loved this ❤ from a ballet dancer 😊
The abduction scene is quite splendid in its Gothicness . . . but it also nods in the direction of monsters of Greek mythology. Costuming and make-up are brilliant.
I'm not sure I fully understand the story even after overnight reflection! I think it looses its way a little in the third act; I was out of breath after the first act, and wishing for some change of pace or quietness but these are minor quibbles. But, the dancing is spectacular, especially Christopher Marney as Count Lilac. Vassalo and Trenfield are great as Aurora and Leo. Importantly, Bourne shows that a 21st century, three-act narrative ballet is possible. Now all you need is David Hallberg to invite Matthew Bourne to stage it for the Australian Ballet!
No expert, but I am a huge fan of Ballet and contemporary dance. It's nice to see dancers with good and normal body types. I stopped seeing many shows at Sadlers, because watching the dancers made me feel like I was either Phat or needed to be bulimic. Eating disorders in the dance industry, especially ballet, is still prevalent.
Could somebody who has danced in ballet answer this for me? Is it actually more painful for the dancers to dance barefoot as they have done here? If so, then I am even more in awe.
Thanks for raising the question! I was curious, not so much about the relative level of pain, but about the barefootedness itself . . . it was especially noticeable in "Swan Lake". The film director also wants to appear, so he forces himself into the product. Too many close-ups - it's as if only Monalisa's right ear and nose are exposed - clumsy cuts. I hate it when I see in an opera broadcast which of the singer's teeth is filled. But I really liked the ballet production . I like it , when they work seriously on a piece of art , BUT don't take themselves too seriously.

(not to mention weird) Please watch another, more standard performance of a ballet. It really is a beautiful art form, worth your viewing!
Sorry, are you saying you're not following the plot or you don't understand why he revised everything?
@@emlynn1004 Again, using a carved up ballet score, but this is modern dance, not ballet.
Except this is not ballet. They just used the music score.
👹🤬👿🤢
Horrible. Chaikovskiy would be turned in his coffin if he saw this
I agree. A disgrace to Tchaikovsky.
Are you joking? It’s a great modern adaptation
@@DollCreate99 Its lyrical dance and under that label its pretty good. There is no turnout, no point work , barely any pointed feet and no ballet elements, all lyrical
Who's Chaikovskiy?
He certainly would question why you cannot even spell his name! Jeez, the irony 🤣
