Yaaay! Your videos are addicting. I was never into watching car repair related videos except when needed, and I've tried looking at other TH-camrs but you guys are so relatable. Awesome work!
I just got back form a winter trip in my motor home and had several road rock pops, called my insurance and they sent out Safelite to do the repairs. They asked me how many cracks did I have, Hell I don't know many so they said on the phone they will fix three, fine fix 3. They came out and I have 8 mainly very small chips but 2 have already been fixed. They said they can't fix the windshield as there are too many breaks. I said you told me you would fix three, so fix the three worst. No you have to buy a new windshield, at over a $1000 for just the drivers side my deductible is a $1000, I told them forget it till it cracks across the windshield. Going to go down to Wal Mart and get one of those fix it kits and do it my self and hopefully put off having to pay the $1000 towards a new windshield Thanks for the timely self fix video!
I have used this stuff on a few cars.. and is awesome. I have repaired some pretty big dings.. and living where I do.. there are tons of rocks, and people always get cracked, pitted windshields. I have tried them on pits.. and really depends on how deep.. worse case.. it at least will cover it a little bit. Totally recommended!
I've successfully used this kit on several Wheeler Dealer Porsche windshields. They pit very easily. Worked great and saved me $900 by not having to replace the windshield on each car.
You are correct about Safelite wanting to replace the windshield. I use to work at a major rental car company so at least once a week safelite was in our lot and their policy was that if there are three chips/ past repairs or more, windshield gets replaced.
Because of liability concerns, most shops and insurance companies will not repair windshields in the acute line of vision of the driver. If someone is complaining of chip that has already been repaired you can't re-repair it.
I used this kit a few months ago on a chip in my windscreen. I was impressed with the results overall but don't expect to use this and not see where the chip was. It made my chip 95% less visible which I was more than happy with but you can still see where it was. The main reason I used the kit is so that the chip would not turn into a crack and then spread across the window. This kit works well to fill any chips and it sure does strengthen the window back up. It's been probably coming close to a year ago now that I did the repair and the chip repair is turning a little bit white so maybe the top layer or resin is getting worn or something but it still looks fine and mostly not noticeable. The main thing I am happy about is that the window never cracked.
Just a lil filmmaking tip: If you had some close ups of each crack as you mentioned them it would help the viewer see what you were talking about, which would help tell the story of your windshield fixing adventure.
Surprised there isn't someone in the comments saying how those kits "aren't the optical refractive index of proper professional resin!" or something. Yeah, of course they aren't they're only $10 kits but you don't NEED something to match perfectly the refractive index of the windshield for such small repairs. Used the very same kit on my own windshield on 3 bullseyes to great success. Highly recommend.
What I found that works for temp. repair is clean with acetone then when dry add clear nail polish to seal it and it last quite a while then clen off with acetone again and well clean and then use rain-x when you get it. Water is the worst enemy of the crack as it expands and contracts which makes the glass crack more and when sealed no water gets in. I think cleaning with acetone then alcohol removes most contaminants in the cracks.
Just a bit of advice so you are informed, as a previous employee/branch manager of a warehouse for automotive windshields aftermarket often is actually the same manufacturer as what is oem or can be knock off aftermarket. But Chinese glass is often preferred over oem by many installers due to high strength but at the end of the day it’s all glass and will all break.
I work for a car parts company and managed to buy the windshield for my 2013 Volt separately and got it installed for $250 altogether but it was a giant pain in the butt.
I used a few times the Permatex kit and it works fine too, but one advantage of your kit (rain-x) is that it is reusable. Especially here in Canada, if there is a little crack in the lower part of the windshield, near the defrost hot air, your hit a pothole in cold weather and the windshield can crack 1 meter long very easily. Better do it soon to avoid that!
I just got done using this rainx kit. The injector did not seem to inject any resin into the cracks. The only thing that I was able to do was spread some resin on the windshield and throw the curing strip on. That at least filled in the pit hole.
*** - You coulda showed the before cracks, up close, so we can see em.. maybe even a zoom up from inside while doing them.... I'm from Buffalo, NY.. and like 5 winters ago it was *BAD* .. and cold as hell.. i was impatient and was banging on my dash & then on windshield.. it was frozen and snowed.. i was trying to unstick the wipers.. i banged, windshield cracked instantly.. my heart sank.. You crack me up ! Lol. If your video gig don’t pan out , you can always do a mobile glass repair in your R8 ! You’ll be the fastest Glass Doctor in Kansas! Lol
Great timing for this vid. I have the same repair kit laying right beside me. Got a little chip in my windshield that is in the perfect spot to bug the shit out of me.
Great job JR! You do a good job explaining what you are working on, and I could listen to you talk about cars all day, just like Ed Bolian. Keep up the great work!
I saw this video and quickly went to a local Walmart to get the kit, as I had a couple windshields in a similar condition. They didn't have the Rain-X kit, but instead had a 3M kit for the same price. I was seriously disappointed. Nothing close to the same results - and yes, I did follow the directions. Wish they'd have had the Rain-X kit.
Just so people know, after a few years, the stuff they use to fill a chip starts to yellow from UV. Many windshield places will fix a chip for free because it prevents the windshield from cracking. I tried using one of those DIY kits and it kept blowing the apparatus off the windshield before the stuff would work. I gave up and sure rnough, the glass cracked from the chip that winter. I had to get the windshield replaced.
Hey JR. I love this and so bummed I missed out on it before spending a ton on fixing it at dealer during my oil change. Can you do a do it yourself window tinting? Also I plan to be in Wichita later this summer. Would be epic to see you, Hoovie and the rest of the crew on my way through. Going to start a TH-cam channel on my travels and planning
You may want to call your insurance company before doing this. Generally windshield glass ( and sometimes ALL side and rear glass )is replaced FREE with NO DEDUCTIBLE under most policies. Grundy replaced the passenger window of my 8 Series after it shattered at no cost to me; the bill from the dealer to them was $800.
Good work on those repairs! I spit up my coffee a little when I heard you say that the guy at the shop NEVER uses a drill. Sometimes the rock leaves big damage but little to no pit. In order for resin to flow properly, an access hole is required. I guarantee that guy does horrible repairs. Also... I gotta say. About OE glass. It all depends on the car it's going into. A new Range Rover gets OE, a '12 Chevy Volt gets aftermarket. Aftermarket glass, *if inspected properly* can be just as good. As long as it's not a high end vehicle it's going into with all kinds of electronics integrated into the glass. And in any case. I'd be more worried about WHO is installing it. Anyway, Great job on the repairs!!!
I only "fix" the cracks in my windshield so that they don't grow any bigger from all the drives and car washes that would enlarge the crack. I've mostly used the autozone or oreilly's repair kit.
thx for the video, had many a rig with pesky chips and small cracks to stare at on long rides, they get bigger as the miles drone on you know,lol...but no more, let us know if the repairs held up ok,thx you.
Funny how in Spain even the most basic car insurance allows you those kind of fix for free, adnd you can change the windshield but you anual insurance will rise a bit the next year (but not even 1/10 of the cost of the actual windshield price.
Isn't that free with insurance? I actually got a $100 gift card to get mine replaced. The dudes come up to me everyday to try and get me to change mine.
It is. I did that for 2 weeks. Door to door. Is free with deductible or full coverage in FL. Sales man gets about 40 bucks each. It was grueling work, everyone thought it was a scam. Only made 80 bucks in 2 weeks. I quit that real quick. They'll schedule a crew to come out. Finish under an hour.
Pete’s Carport I work for a glass co. I know that not all waive repair for chips. I.e. State Farm and a few others. I picked my ins based on who covers chips. Some states waive repair or replace if you have comp coverage. Keeping the factory seal on the glass is best. Always try to get chip repaired asap. Don't wash car with chip on a hot day. Or blast defrost on cold day. They can split fast.
Then you are putting it on wrong or you're not getting your windshield clean before hand, I went a couple of years without windshield wipers, just used Rain X and never had any problems seeing when it rained.
The trick is to repair the crack ASAP, because once dirt gets in the glass laminates there is no getting it out, and it makes repair difficult. The dirt gets in the laminates and wont come out, even using cleaning solutions.
Mine cost $3 a month for windshield protection it's not much but seriously talk about cheap fuckers. The only reason I got it is because it's a brand new 2019 Chevy Bolt which when GM was getting a ton of shit the closing plants they offered a crap ton of incentives so I got it for 36 Grand before the tax return and it would regularly be about 43,000 with everything included which is what I got. Looking up dealer cost they literally only made one grand off me thinking of course to make way more off of me with the financing that 650 bucks a month for 60 months and because I had no credit the bank made the knock off $500 in order to approve the loan. I took it I left I paid off the whole thing the next day they made squat
It's gonna be humid for a week or two and then we'll be blasted by 2 months of 100+ degree weather. Central KS doesn't get too much rain in the summer months.
I had a one-inch crack on my Acura TLX windshield. That highly-advertised national company "repaired" it, and replaced the one-inch crack with a one-foot crack. I contacted a competent small company, the same one used by my auto dealer. They installed a new OEM Acura windshield, with no problems. I will never again use, or recommend, that highly-advertised national windshield repair/replace company.
Nothing new on that. Sometimes windshields can crack while you are doing repair on it, it is not 100% sure fix. I have cracked many windshields when i did that job.
Cool video, most people wont even bother with this simple cheap fix & get ripped off.. Its weird to see how cheap he is when you see that rare Dodge El Camino powered by a fast & furious Mitzy turbo motor from the factory, and he has a rare Ford EXP Wich was designed at & for LaMans, then the super rare high performance Suzuki/Chevrolet/Geo Tracker that's half a mill at Barrett....
I don’t know where you are getting your information from, but the factory glass is no better than an aftermarket glass, any glass shop worth a crap will warranty defective glass. Really the difference is the workmanship of the installation.
Because this dude puts out a video every day and he would be spending 5 hours responding to every comment. Why are you so needy that you need this guy to reply “thanks” to your comment?
