My Sweet Lord is George Harrison’s first single as a solo artist. And it wasn’t just any single. It was going to the top of the charts all around the world when it was released in 1970 and became the biggest selling single the year after. The idea of making this song came to Harrison after a conversation he had with fellow musicians Billy Preston and Delaney Bramlett. And inspired by his personal beliefs in hinduism and especially the massive gospel hit from 1969 «Oh Happy
Day» by the Edwin Hawkins Singers, he sought to create a song that would bridge the gap between religions. But it didn’t go exactly as he planned.

C'mon George wrote 2% of the beatles stuff.
He had like 1 or 2 an album but everything he wrote was gold. Here comes the Sun, Something, Savoy Truffle, While my guitar gently weeps. To be fair, everything they did was gold but most of my favourites turned out to be his.
I love George don't get me wrong but he's not in same ball park as John and Paul.

That song has always moved me... sometimes I play it on repeat for an hour at a time. To me, personally, it speaks to how challenging "this world" can be, like the money grabbing lawsuit, materialism, egoism, capitalism, war, politics, etc. George was known to be spiritual and it has been reported, that on his death bed that he was fully aware and totally NOT afraid to die... I think that he really did long to be with the Lord, and wanted it to be sooner than later, hence the mention in the song, but it takes so long...
I am an Atheist, but this song has always moved me. I appreciate peoples' 'love' for a supposed higher entity and this song embodies that love that they have. Oh, and I really like the Krsna chant.

John 3: 17. the gospels are clear this is God's word if you die in your sins you would be separated from God forever and condemned to hell, it hurts me even to say that but it's the truth.

It is hard to say how many songs George Harrison had written and was waiting to record. I always loved his music. His voice is heavenly. What a wonderful talent. He was also very handsome throughout his life. He aged beautifully. I love George.

It's not true that *all* of McCartney's solo work is rubbish. Some of his solo stuff is quite good. His second album RAM features the awesome Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey-song, his first album includes Junk and Maybe I'm Amazed, and McCartney II is not my cup of tea, but it's extremely innovative.
But I agree that nothing comes close to Harrisons solo work.

just as an adage, though 4 years later, George Harrison always had an eye to help many people from many backgrounds and in connection to this song in 1973 George gave a manor house, later known as Bhaktivedanta Manor, in Letchmore Heath near Watford England and 17 acres to the ISKON (think Hare Krishna) think it was called Piggots Manor at one time. This was a massive thing to do, mainly because during the 1990's I accidently found my way there without knowing its history and I'm still here today because he gave it to them, I was there and continue to be here. Very special song, very special man

I tried listening to the whole album. But i honestly didn't like it that much.
I totally believe he wrote this song with no intentions of lifting from “He’s So Fine”, as why would someone like George Harrison ever need to do that! With his genius and talent, the thought is comical. With that said, the litigation that ensued for way too many years, as often happens, just tells me
$$$$$$$ for lawyers pushing paperwork and postponing court dates. Seems more the norm than not.
If it were me that wrote and/or owned the rights to “He’a So Fine”, I’d be nothing but flattered, and without a bunch of BS court proceedings, would kindly ask Harrison for a share in the rights, and if he did not see that as fair, then all his peace, love, and understanding would only put me into a position of questioning his sincerity of his beliefs, which I can hardly imagine.
Yeah it doesn't make sense to me either why he would do something like that. What i think is so ironic is
a statement that Lennon came with right after the song was released. He commented in the papers that he
loved the song, and that he could see god everywhere in life (something along those lines). Then when the
lawsuit started, he critizised George for not hearing the similarity before. There was still some obvious rivalry
going on there.

Even though the melody is similar, he made a completely different song with a completely different meaning. It's one thing to completely rip something off and another thing to be inspired subconsciously. I guarantee the writers of he's so fine got it from somebody else as well. You're completely right. Anybody who claims ownership of a motif knows nothing about music. It's a language that you add to by taking what you've heard and changing it up.

We'd like to think our heroes are good people but often they aren't. The truth is that George Harrison ripped of this song in full knowledge he was doing so and thought that he was so powerful he could get away with it. Delaney Bramlett who you mention stated that when Harrison came to him about writing a gospel song he used "He's So Fine," while playing to create an example. So Harrison knew from the beginning. He also never gave credit to Delaney Bramlett and they never spoke again. Those working on it have also said everyone knew it was a rip-off. Harrison was a multi-millionaire and he never thought to simply offer half share and a writing credit to the poor writer who actually wrote the song. John Lennon laughed at his excuse that he did it subconsciously and said "Maybe he thought God would just sort of let him off."
The truth is that it is a delicious irony that his great song about god is a a rip or to make money. Just like all religions are.

This song means so much to me as the week I was born was the week after he passed so therefore number 1 when I was born. It stood out so vividly between the other number ones at the time much and helped me find my own style of more indie stoner rock music

MichaelKingsfordGray.....I disagree. The Smith's one song with US radio play is from Meat Is Murder. The "atonal droning" accentuates the quirky nihilistic perspective of that record. Their next, The Queen Is Dead, is a great record and mostly quite melodic. It's uniquely English with it's intelligence, literacy and dry wit. Bob Dylan is "atonal droning boring crap" if you don't get it. Otherwise, Bob's layered songs will take you as deep as you can stand.

in my opinion, george was the experimental one in the beatles
I think they were all quite experimental. McCartney invented the fuzz bass, Lennon started creating music
with Yoko which was a left-field move. So i think they all have their quirks.

That technique recording things over and over again is called over-dubbing. A process that was commonly used quite a bit in the analog era but not to the extent of Phil Spector. What a madman! Great video! You mention a lot about the instruments and how it builds throughout the piece. I think it's important to add that Spector employed a lot of his "Wall of Sound" in order to give the whole album a very gospel feel. A lot of the songs are drenched in reverb giving off this big open feeling, a similar feeling to what you would feel inside a large church. "Awaiting on you All" perfectly describes what I'm talking about. Spector really adds a dynamic touch to the album, giving the music a very full sound that fuses well with Harrison's naturally thin voice. Harrison's choice to use Spector was also extremely deliberate as not only was he the first Beatle to release a solo project, but he released the project with both Lennon and McCartney's favorite producer. Later of course Spector would work with Lennon, but up to that point Spector only had worked with The Beatles on "Let it Be". Harrison not only found chart success but also proved he was capable of carrying a full album. This album would also help Harrison mature into the creative powerhouse we remember him as.
For sure! I didn't pay attention to this when i first heard "All Things Must Pass". Maybe it's because i've heard
this wall of sound technique in so many other albums that came out after this one. But it sure was an innovation
that lead music to a better place. I didn't know that he was their favorite producer. Hmm, do you remember
why they thought so?
Obviously George Martin was their favorite but outside of that, they all seemed to enjoy Spector. I had always thought they enjoyed Spector so much as a producer because they were familiar with his work and loved aspects of his production. Spector was the goto guy in the 60's. Brian Wilson, from The Beach Boys, was so obsessed with the Phil Spector produced "Be My Baby" that he would spend a lot of his career trying to emulate Spector's "Wall of Sound." Harrison, along with other Beatles, also enjoyed his sound a lot. McCartney even used a fuzz box on "Think For Yourself" due to Spector's choice to override his guitar player's output on "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah", a lot of people copied Spector's methods. I think also The Beatles friendship with Spector had a lot to do in why they enjoyed him so much as a producer.
"Phil Spector made the kind of records that I like: the wall-to-wall sound. I was a big fan of his, and we had spent some time with him in the early Sixties, when he was in London. So I was all for the idea of getting Phil involved. Also, he'd been through a bad patch and he'd given up making music, and I think he was trying to get back into it. I saw it as a way of helping him back on his feet."

George was my favorite Beatle, so this not out of spite. When "Name That Tune" was a thing, they played a little of a song, & the guests would try and identify it. One night the song played, I said to my husband, that's "He's So Fine". The contestant said the same thing. The host said no it's "My Sweet Lord". It was shortly after that, the law suit hit the news. I've always thought the "He's So Fine" people were watching that same show. I also believe it was unintentional on Georges part, but it was there.

Thanx for taking time to write. There is so much info in this and your dictation is perfect. I don't see how it could have been better. I graduated high school in 1972 and I don't recall ever even hearing about this. This is real music, reaching out to you on many levels and the court obviously realized George is smart enough not to have intentionally duplicated the chord progression. Today's music is a travesty.

Fans and journalists insist George finally came into his own with Here Comes the Sun and Something, but I was a George fan from the get-go. He had a very warm voice which sounded cool when he rocked out, such as Roll Over Beethoven and Don't Bother Me, and his singing and writing were always top-notch. I think his best performance as a Beatle were the three songs on Revolver. They were very warm, mature songs delivered with a warm, mature voice. I would love to have heard original demo versions of Isn't It a Pity and Art of Dying. Art of Dying was proposed during the Revolver sessions. I think it would have fit beautifully with the other three tracks he was "blessed with and allowed" to have on the LP.

We in Northern England even liked it when in international football Norway defeated us 1-0, & the Nowegian commentator went into a mighty download of famous English names, Vinston Churchill, Maggie Thatcher, William Shakespeare,David Beckham,Sir Alf Ramsey.King Henry V111...etc but he failed to give George Harrison.a mention! The River Mersey flows about 300 m from my door & I'd like to say one other thing appropriate here re ' My Sweet Lord.. When George Harrison died there wasn't many who didn't weep- my doctor even had to be consoled by me as I had a book of his songs.& was able to loan it to her.Perhaps you'd look at the song 'Don't let Me Down' when you have an opportunity as though it is well known for the film footage on a central London roof, it didn't make it onto the original 'Let it Be. album.Thanks for any consideration you may have./ Brian Cokayne/ Stockport.
