Sure you can sit on a folding stool, but where it really shines it is to keep your bag / backpack out of the snow or mud, when conditions are sloppy.
Kathmandu has good quality stools for $30 (but usually has a sale on them, especially Christmas time), so you can get for around 21$ and mine has been good for years now.
