- We give a better, more detailed look at the life and reign of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who was the last of the Five Good Emperors. We also examine the most important people in his life, his co-emperor Lucius Verus, his wife Faustina the Younger as well as his two sons, Annius and Commodus, with the latter contributing to the end of Pax Romana.

I really liked Marcus Aurelius. His philosophical writings helped in shaping who I am. What a shame that Commodus couldn’t follow his father’s philosophies.
Boy did his best. He never wrote anything, but at least he tried to rule as his father did, until the sheer amount of conspiracies made him change his mind.
Someone says he wasn't his son, his mother being a little too Easy.
Surely he was too different from his"ufficial" father, too violent, phisically imposing and also really crazy
What he needed to do was put his top general in as his successor, not his son. He needed to stick to the system that had worked since the fall of Domitian!
Most probably the guy had mental conditions as a result of inbreeding.
Well Commodus ended the war with the macromanni by a peace treaty. Most people don't know that.

He was not only a valiant soldier, gifted orator and exquisite poet and philosopher, he brought justice and equality up a notch on the gun grip of ancient civilization. HIs wife and children and brother come through the wall of time as well, bringing with them a glimpse of their world in our endless need to understand our past and the people in it.

The production of Gladiator probably began more than 25 years ago. All this technology used to reconstruct with accuracy is less than 10 years old. It was good for what was known at the time.

Hello, Thank you for a magnificent and informative video. Marcus looks intellectual, wise and thoughtful and quietly. Lucius appears more fiery, alpha, gung-ho, dangerous and gorgeous. Poor beautiful boy who died at just 7 years of age. And Commodus, who seems to have thought he was a god, who obviously upset other powers who strangled him. Dangerous and Machiavellian times. Xxx❣👏

I’ve studied ancient history and if you read contemporary third party accounts, you’ll get a better idea of how they looked. It’s well known that sculptors were under orders to flatter their subjects with idealistic and unrealistically better looking sculptures. Just think about portrait photos of today and how they look much better than the real person.

I once read about a strategy of an artist who was trying to find the most realistic-looking sculpture/portrait by picking the ugliest one 😅 Although they say roman sculptures of this era used to be pretty realistic, I start having serious doubts. All in all, the personality of Marcus Aurelius was pretty much perfect, him being good or bad-looking would not really change the fact of what an amazing human being the emperor was.
