    One of the most innovative features of the Pietro Flat Burr Grinder is the retractable lever, which provides enhanced user comfort and allows the grinder to remain compact. With the lever positioned on the side, users can take advantage of gravity to keep the grinder stable while resting their other hand on top of it.
    This ergonomic design also makes it easy to clean, as the burrs detach and attach with ease. The grinder comes with multipurpose burrs but can be swapped out for filter burrs if you're exclusively grinding pour-overs.
    The airtight hopper lid keeps your beans fresh up to the last moment, and the anti-slip base prevents the grinder from moving away when in use. If you're looking for a high-quality manual coffee grinder that combines comfort, efficiency, and durability, the Fiorenzato Pietro Flat Burr Hand Grinder is definitely worth considering.

    *ADDED NOTE:* I counted ~170 revolutions to grind 18g of espresso beans... It is comfortable grinding at a speed of 120rpms. ... any slower than that - it'll take quite a while.

      Yet I still see people compliant about how Jmax is difficult to work with. That only takes me 30-40s for a 20g shot, from light to dark roasts.
      We shall see how this stands up to the new sculptors, since 064s is 300usd and 078s is 500usd for the KS deal.

      I do think the beans feeding rate into the grinders is very slow, allowing for the handle to feel comfortable and not too much work, but a lot slower than my 1zpresso jxpro. It'll take 30-35 seconds with that grinder to tackle 18grams espresso size.
      I think however, in the next iterations of the Pietro or others brands, the design would be more practical and nicer. It has quite a lot of potential having a flat burr hand grinder... I'd love to have one for my occasional pour over.

      @jslanfranchi ปีที่แล้ว

      Same calculations here: about 180 revolutions on average depending on coffee. Never felt hard but far from being the fastest hand grinder in town. I also use Comandante and JX. Sure the JX is great and (much) faster, but the cup profile is quite substantially different. The JX now tends to remain tucked in its carry case, while I have left my Comandante set for pour overs. Pietro used daily here for espresso. The upcoming baseplate should make it even more confortable to grind with.

      Additional finding. Don’t know if it’s the same for you but I found that big clicks usually generates a 6 to 7,5/8 second difference in a 18g shot. Haven’t had to use the in between notches settings yet (I usually keep setting and increase to 18.5g as coffee looses freshness).
      Another point: Pietro has confirmed to me by email that pro burrs will be available to purchase separately my end of may.

    • @Psychoh90

      @@jslanfranchi Hi. well if you have the jx it's possible to have 5-8 secs gap in espresso shot time. With the jx pro, which is the one I have, its more 1-2 secs difference, sometimes less with very freshly roasted coffee sometimes more coffee has more than 1 month from roasting day. I agree that the baseplate would be great. Nice to see how does pro burrs will behave with espresso.

    I have a Pietro manual flat burr grinder and I really love it. I live out in the country and we sometimes have power outages so I was looking for a good hand grinder. It was expensive but the shipping and import fees were included in the price, so it is sort of comparable to more high end hand grinders. I have the multipurpose burrs but mine is coated so it is black, the burrs are great and it does do surprising cups. I would highly recommend it if your situation allows.

    Great vid ! Very informative. I got the Pietro, and understand the critique about grind setting limitations, however I found on the opposite that it was very quick and easy to dial in. Sure not suitable for someone needing micro adjustment to the second, but much easier to dial (and go back and forth) than my 1Zpresso (which will cover ´y need if ever it’s a question of 8 microns) and Comandante. It is to be noted that this was purchased for my manual lever setup where I have more control. My take may be different if it was for my machine.
    Like you I found the cup profile to be delightful, not lacking in body compared to conicals, and with great clear flavors. And that is what matters the most.
    Grinding is easy, although long - longer than Comandante - and sometimes challenging to avoid the base from wobbling. These are the two biggest improvement areas I would like to see addressed.
    Cleaning / disassembling is a breathe and pleasure. And being told pro brew burrs would be available separately at some point. Build quality is on par with price. All in all, I am thrilled with this purchase.

      How does it compare with your other hand grinders? Are you doing filter or espresso coffees?

    • @jslanfranchi
      @jslanfranchi ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MH-go1md hi, doing both but I am more espresso focused. Comparing to the other hand grinders it’s different. It’s the slowest to grind a 18g dose (1Zpresso is the fastest, then Comandante, then Pietro but I am also not used to it so take it with a grain of salt as it is not same mouvement). It’s also, and that is purely subjective, the best tasting. The others produce very nice body, but the Pietro is definitely replacing my Comandante for espresso as the flavors shine more clearly, and setting / cleaning is miles better. All of them are great and I would be happy with any, so there are no wrong options. Haven’t done filter with it yet (waiting for the pro brew burrs to be available, and Comandante is already set for my filter routine so…). Sorry, difficult to tell you.
      One thing I know is that I prefer it to my Eureka electric grinder. Probably the slower RPM, and different burr geometry. I am also biased to hand grinders so… hope this helps !

    • @jslanfranchi
      @jslanfranchi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LilyWillow22 depends on so many factors. Coffee, taste, brewer, recipe, paper/filter used, and obviously personal preferences and tastes. Comandante recommends in the region of 25 clicks (regular clicks, double for red clix) if memory serves me well. I tend to start a little lower then adjust, but I am not an expert !

    • @mprz8188
      @mprz8188 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Longer than Comandante? Dang, that takes lots of elbow grease
      So you prefer this thing over the C40 and 1Zpresso (k series I assume) but IMHO it all comes down to preference, not only in taste but other many aspects. Pietro looks solid but highly doubt it to be as durable as the C40. Please correct me if I'm wrong. And taste wise, i find a ZP6 or even Kplus to be as good in the cup as the best flat burrs I've tried. It's not like flats are superior. Just different. I've seen cases where people picks conicals over flats for certain applications in a double blind test. That's perfectly valid.
      Another quite important aspect is that this grinder is crazy expensive for a bench/manual grinder. Yeah I know that it's well built and everything but at this price point it's difficult to justify the cash when there are so many options available, with great quality, powerful motors and interesting features.
      For me, conicals do the trick pretty well on a dayly basis and since I've been using some sifting I'm able to fine tune my PSD to make it narrower or multi modal, etc

    I would like to know, what were the other two shots, because if you found out which one is the shot of the review, you ignore the benchmarks that you've used to set the comparison.
    Also, I would appreciate maybe a once-a-week or once-a-month video with blind comparisons of similar categories of grinders. Whenever a new and promising grinder comes out - make a comparison. This way with every next comparison you'll verify your previous picks and conclusions and will provide a more complex benchmark for the newcomer grinders.

  • @kukkurovaca
    @kukkurovaca ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very curious about this. Lance Hedrick posted a picture recently including a base for better stability when grinding, but I'm not clear on whether that will be included when the grinders ship or whether that's an aftermarket accessory (on an already very expensive hand grinder). He did say that it will be easy to change between the two burr sets, and I saw at least one vendor that's listing the burrs separately as an $83 USD add on. But I don't know if the swap process will be so easy that it wouldn't be annoying to do on a regular basis.

      @AlternativeBrewing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We already have stock of Standard burr Grinders - with no information about the base coming anytime soon. .. I would hope maybe in the next shipment, and not too more expensive.
      Had tried to remove burrs to isolate them, though from a consumer standpoint - not practical, with springs that pop out under the handle and tools that are required that don’t come with the grinder.
      Interested in seeing how other retailers offer this- is it just OEM or are they swapping them out on order… Unlikely the latter.
      Also, very much looking forward to @lancehedrick review! I know he’s spoken highly of the performance of the PRO burr. The standard burrs are great, would love to test the PRO.

    I’m wondering about two sound factors. The first one is from before I watched the video: Do you reckon the vibration of grinding echoes through your worktop? E.g., my gf sometimes handgrinds holding the 1zpresso down on the worktop and to me it’s like nails on a blackboard…
    The second sound question arised when watching this video. Around 6:29, what’s the clicking sound when grinding? Is that from the grinder, shirt, or just the microphone picking up something you didn’t notice in the moment?

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I vibrates quite a lot. I would say it is louder than any other hand grinder - as this vibration will reverberate through the bench. That clicking sounds, I'm pretty such is beans skipping in the grinds chamber. Pop-corning basically, with nowhere to go.

    @9:24 I would like to know, what one next full step set on the dial would result in what time difference. With my _Eureka Mignon Single Dose_ one marked step up or down would result in an _eight_ seconds brewing difference to achieve the same 18 g IN and 36 g OUT.
    How much difference can be set by setting it to the next full step? Thank you ;-)
    By the way, I am not really optimistic that the bandwidth of this grinder would be sufficient for me to dial in very different espresso coffees. I mean, on my _Eureka Mignon Single Dose_ the time difference between whole numbers is about 24 seconds. Quite a lot.
    I had coffee that needed to be ground on 2 whereas other espresso needed the 6 as a setting to run properly within a 25 to 35 seconds range to get the 18 IN 36 OUT recipe working correctly. Perhaps I am wrong, but I think this grinder might not have been invented to be espresso-only or better suitable for espresso.

    These burrs don't seem to be fixed by screws but in some other way, which makes me wonder, I guess that already means that other burrs from 3rd parties will be a no-go, what about aligning the burrs, though?

    • @mikni4069
      @mikni4069 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can’t use burrs not designed for hand grinders anyway, people already tried that and it requires way to much torque and you can’t do enough resolutions to make them work properly.
      Lance has been over the probrew burrs, like on Ode V2 burrs so I think those will be fine as is.

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These are proprietary burrs for sure. I wasn’t successful at removing the burrs unfortunately, however, the burr carriers do appear like you can remove the burr and add some aluminium to help with alignment 👍

    • @danymeeuwissen5973
      @danymeeuwissen5973 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      These are 'blind' burrs, they are fixed with 2 hex screws from the backside. There's a little hole next to the release switch where you can fit a 2,5mm hex key to unscrew the burr. It takes around 5 minutes to change both of them. No aligning is necessary.

    Which Burr Set for AeroPress?

      Either honestly will do wonders - but perhaps the Filter Burr set will be slightly more to the Aeropress brew method 🫶

    Looks nice, but I was expecting that with the look and size of that machine and vertically rotating crank arm, that you'd be able to grind your coffee beans in under 45 seconds, rather than 1:15.

  • @anotherguycalledsmith
    @anotherguycalledsmith ปีที่แล้ว +3

    @5:00 Well, there is of course and obviously one _huge_ advantage - you could grind your coffee under water…
    Show me that with _any_ other grinder…
    I like your excellent content, nice find this flat burrs hand grinder. Looks somewhat wobbly while grinding though. See you ;-)

      @@AlternativeBrewing Since I love your channel so much, because I have learnt so much from you guys and I want to give you something back, here comes a hint at a very special African espresso coffee with a wonderful texture: “Macenta Beans” is the brand and it is coming from the rain forrest in Guinea.
      They have different sorts, I simply love « Sédimai »!
      The secret? It is a 100% Canephora (Robusta) that has been as carefully processed in a local coffee washing-machine as they would normally do with Arabica coffee.
      It is stunning, - give it a try. By doing so, you are supporting local African farmers that are treated with respect for their hard work ;-)
      I always thought that I am very much a 100% Arabica person because I doubt strange coffee blends, but I never expected to be so impressed by a coffee variety that “is generally known to be inferior”…
      It is not. You can experience the whole warmth of the African continent in-there.
      Well, I admit that warmth or even heat is no point in Australia - but in Germany, in winter times, I am afraid, it very much is. Enjoy… ;-)

    Nice review. Keep camera on manual focus. When you have a grinder that produces uneven grinds, with fines, you will get a more complex flavor profile, and you have to manage the contact time (pre-infusion) of the water more to reduce acidity. Your results were predictable, given the grinders and burrs you were using.

    Being a side handle, is there an option to reverse crank direction for left hand grinding?

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  ปีที่แล้ว

      YOu'd just have to be turning it towards you if it were done on the LHS, as opposed to pushing it away from you.

    I was waiting for this grinder but purchased a z1 presso a month or so ago. I think it is over priced because you can buy a motorised unit for the same price. A hand grinder should be substantially cheaper. I also see some engineering issues. These revolve around the manual grinding. The base is too narrow and too short, and the handle on the side of the unit exploits these issues to make the unit unstable. If the handle was placed in top of the unit, as it traditionally has been done, both these issues would not have arisen.

    That base should be more pyramid shaped. That instability doubles your effort and hand strain. I foresee a 3D printed solution.

    I always played with the thought of buying a manual grinder for 400€ and get a real high quality coffee grind for that
    But at the required time to grind and the physical effort, i will still go with a 400€ electric grinder and perhaps a little less in grind consistency

    It's super easy to swap burrs, you need 2 tools and it takes 5 minutes or less. So I would advise everyone to get the other set too, as it's almost like buying 2 different grinders. My experience is very similar to the thoughts in this video, superb quality and not much more expensive than the high-end conical hand grinders.

      @@Phil_OG I got them on Amsterdam Coffee Festival last week. Used it for filter with the Lance-burrs at our booth and now testing on spro in the office with the multi purpose burrs. First impressions are that you can clearly taste big differences between classic and turbo shots, not just in body but the whole flavor balance shifts a lot. Definitely not a one-trick-pony grinder!
