Spiffy! It's so nice that they engineered so many options in one unit so you don't have to have a bunch of extra things. That fines sifter is really cool!
The Momentum is a fascinating grinder. I use the Niche Zero when in a hurry and the Commandante C40 when in a zen mood. Taking these two grinders apart, cleaning them and putting them back together is enough for me. I can’t imagine having to deal with all those parts on the Momentum.
So inspired by this and as a Zp6 owner I tried the following: Grinder Zeroed at 3 click before 0. Same coffee (10g) On a negotiated orea v3 & kalita wave filters. Same recipe. Clicks are calculated from 0 (not the 3 before). For the pour 1 I went as far open as the grinder would allow (45clicks on the second rotation), and then ground again at my normal test setting (at 55 clicks). For pour 2, I went with my normal tesr setting. Cup 1 was noticeable "cleaner" in its taste, while cup 2 was slightly more astringent. That being said the difference was only noticeable when tasted side by side & I don't know if double grinding my coffee is something I'll do on the daily. I'd love a deep dive into double grinding though. I think there's a discussion to be had on how this could change the value of low/mid range grinders. On a side note, grinding coffee straight from the freezer makes a much larger difference then the double grind.
This was, to me, your most interesting review of a coffee gadget. Upper burrs, lower burrs, reverse direction - for those 'who like to 'play with their coffee' it's an entire field of rabbit holes - absolutely endless. It was quite fascinating. Good job explaining the grinders functions (and good pros/cons). For myself, I have a Knock Feldgrind (V2) for when using my main grinder is not an option for some reason. Does a very serviceable job, though I don't use it often.
For someone where coffee is a primary hobby, not just another part of the day, this makes perfect sense. We want that chase, that constant fascination with what could be better and how to get there. Also if I had this grinder I would probably have another one (most likely an electric one) to grind something quick and mindless when I wanted that. All that said, no way I could afford this 😂
This is so wild, when you think of normal people having trouble dialing in their "Base Level" Coffees and dont know how to do it. And then there is This...! I Love dialing in new Coffees but when i think about trying all Styles with a new bean on This Grinder, damn you Need at least 200g of Coffee Just to know where the sweet Spot is😂. But a very good Tool for competitive people !
Very interesting grinder and your assessment is spot on. My hand grinder is for my coffee travel kit, and this grinder has too many options to make it suitable for that, and it's heavy.
I can see this grinder being included in the baristas recipe, just like the Aeropress. I think this will definitely open up more discussion among coffee enthusiasts about grind particle size and how that affects the taste. I think this is more than just a grinder, but a tool.
thank you for this informative video. i think this could be a helpful tool for roasters like me. roasting with different temperatures, and increments and testing each batch.... more dialing options before i can deliver the roasted beans to my clients.
hmm, surely its still a combo of top and bottom settings. Surely, aside obvious burr characteristic differences, you could do set 1 and set 2 on a good single burr grinder and get commeasurable results.
Really good review. Noticed that James Hoffmann was using one in his latest video (on the Outin) so looking forward to him putting the results through his particle analyser. I REALLY need to get out more….
When I first got into making home espresso I had a Baratza Encore but I couldn’t get the grinds fine enough so I bought a hand grinder. Hand grinder was great but took longer than I wanted to grind enough espresso for my morning. So for the longest I would grind my beans in the Encore and finish them in the hand grinder. The trick was in the first grind, finding a grind that was not too course or too fine otherwise it wouldn’t go through the hand grinder at all.
Hmm, if the upper burrs do the most work it maybe results in a slow feed situation at the lower burrs wich then is creating fewer fines at that stage? Would be very interesting to see data on particle distribution of each burrs. Can one run it without the top one only using the 2nd? Thank you for this review. Im always very curious on manual grinders.
The video, mentioned less fines on the end result is by doing most of the work at the top, with a close to end result setting then finishing at bottom. Surely, if the freedom of this grinder is to allow balancing top and bottom grinding settings, the same can be achieved with other grinders. I could set my hand grinder 20% of the work off, then set it to end result grind. All without the extra expense.
Do you have any experience with a Versalab grinder (conical breaker and flat burrs)? I’m curious if the double burr on this grinder would be similar to what I’ve heard about the increased clarity and body.
Yes. On filter this is very noticeable. On espresso it’s faster/easier but still a hard grind. IMO in order to justify the price you should be into this for other reasons besides grind speed
It’s a collaboration “mud rock” V60 by Hario and Lins Ceramic out of Taiwan. As far as I know these drippers are only available in Taiwan. I literally had someone bring me one over who was flying to North America!
Is it april the 1st ? Seems more aimed at reviewers than real home users!! Think i will stick with my craig lyn prime for home and j ultra and m47 for nights out!! Interesting idea though for the coffee lab 😎
With that spread you’re certainly not doing too bad! Yes, there is definitely a certain “type” for this grinder. And while they may not all be reviewers, I’d hazard a guess that a lot of reviewers fit that type! Definitely a maximialist approach in terms of flexibility compared to the general scope of hand grinders
Ahh just when burr geometry shenanigans started getting a bit stale, we get thrust into the prebreaker/auger geometry/interactions rabbit hole. Conical prebreakers with flat burrs anyone? 48mm conical/64mm flat dual dial systems here we coooommmeeee. How long till this eventually evolves into countertop roller mills?
Basically, when you finally are getting good shots, we add something to trouble with it, until we get a good shot and mess it up with another thing later. 😂
@@winexprt I upgraded at the time of purchase for the stainless steel catch up. I did use the plastic one a few times and had no issues - fit snuggly and did not fall off. I ordered it from Canada & was able to get it a bit cheaper than the U.S.
OMG! Some people design things that I really don't know who is the one in charge that approves them! What a complex, ineficcient, super expensive "thing". Because more than a grinder it is simply a "thing". Simply put: bad design.

It really seems like they tried to do as much as possible with this one

Sometimes the enemy of “good” is “great,” and simple can get the job done as well and easy, and still get you to yum town just fine.
I liked very much the way you made comparisons with top and lower burr at edge settings
Thank you!!!

There are so many things you can tweak here!

Yeah this one is not built for portability. It CAN go with you but is more of a dial in Swiss Army knife for home

This seems like unlimited grind variation can be produced by this grinder. Very interesting!
I wouldn’t say unlimited, but DEFINITELY a wider range than most other grinders!

You can. Because the bottom burr is much larger it is harder to turn in this configuration and also creates more fines :)

The de-chaffer drew me in instantly 😅 I spend more time than I’d like to admit puffing on my coffee to blow off the chaff then cleaning up the mess
Same! Sometimes chaff gets in my eyes 😅
Calibration can be hell! 🔥🔥🔥
More complexity = 😵💫🤪☕️

Man, I would love to review the versalab
Have you tried the Lido OG?
Can it grind faster since there is more surface area for cutting?
Yes. On filter this is very noticeable. On espresso it’s faster/easier but still a hard grind. IMO in order to justify the price you should be into this for other reasons besides grind speed

cool flexibility and build. but way, way overpriced 😂could get an xbloom with that
It’s a BIG chunk of change.
Next in line a double flat burr grinder?
👀👀👀
Inb4 three burr grinder! 😅
🤣☕️
can someone explain to me the reverse grinding?
Very cool approach, but idk if I would have the patience to set it properly…
Not for everyone. I got good brews on drip right away and the more I played the better it got. Espresso was tricky at first

I have a hand roller mill in the review queue 👀👀👀
@@DaddyGotCoffee Huh?! Things are going so fast I can't keep up anymore.
What was the other hand grinder in there
In this video I also showed a an 1zpresso K-Ultra, Pietro, and wacaco ExaGrind 💪
Hello, can you recommend a high quality coffee grinder in the 50-100 price range(or less)? Thanks
I have a french press and aeropress and am new to coffee. I'd like to taste the general notes of the coffee more.
If you are ok to grind 20ish grams of coffee at a time the 1zpresso q and q-air does fantastic quality. Otherwise I would recc the Kingrinder line
Basically, when you finally are getting good shots, we add something to trouble with it, until we get a good shot and mess it up with another thing later. 😂
Exactly 😂
I’ll stick with my Kinu M47 Simplicity for espresso lol (but enjoyed the video!)
I need to get around to reviewing the Kinu grinders. Glad you enjoyed the vid! I had fun with this one!
Any issues with the plastic catch cup on your M47 Simplicity? For a $300 grinder one would expect better.

@@SaltySaltySalty. good to know.
Sorry that I misspelled the grinder name. Siri made the change and I should have read my post before hitting send.
What a range to play, wouldn't experiment with my expensive coffee at first glance...
You do eventually get a feel for where to start and what settings will suit what. But it absolutely is intimidating at first!
For $499.99 it better pull 9 bars for me too.
Good news - it does! 😂
Very interesting! Just slightly cheaper than Comandate C60...
I really should review the c60!
triple burr is better
Let’s gooooooo
just get a roller mill
it's way better than burr grinders
$500 is the price i found....
and i gotta grind it myself? fuck that noise.
I'd rather spend double on a machine that does it for me thanks.
Manual grinding, especially for espresso, is a lifestyle choice 😂☕️
Luckily it goes on sale occasionally for $300
Interesting concept, I like the flexibility.
Same!
sorry but I have to say it... your profile picture kind of looks like if a kid took a selfie and then applied the "adult" filter on it 😅
How do you know that’s not actually what happened? 🤣☕️
❤ฉันชอบสินค้าคุณ*ฉันจะเก็บเงินเพื่อฉันเอง🎉
It’s great!
I was interested until I heard all the options. Sounds too difficult (and wayy too expensive) for an amatuer like me.
500$?
No please 🙂
"modern style" - that won't age well. I think in general we've already started swinging away from what we considered "modern" a few years ago.
Were you drunk when you got that tattoo?
From what I see it is “Chesed” in Hebrew which means kindness/ loyalty. 😁

Maybe bad for some, but there are others who would be all about this level of complexity. Definitely a niche product
If you don't like it, there is always the option of not buying it
And heavy to be a hand grinder for daily use!
