  • I decided to join popular flight sim TH-camr (and real-world A32x captain) V1 on part of his long haul flight from Sydney (YSSY) to Los Angeles (KLAX). As I am flying an A320 home cockpit I elected to land in the Fiji Islands in Nadi (NFFN). Nadi has a special place in my logbook as it was the site of the funniest events I witnessed during WorldFlight 2022 (see this video: • WorldFlight 2022 | The... ).
On this flight, luck had it that V1 spotted our "cute little narrow body" (his words, not mine) as we were climbing over the airport before making our turn to the east and head out over the water.
Another cool aspect of this flight is that we had VATSIM oceanic controllers for both Brisbane Radio and Nadi Radio so we had to provide position reports at regular intervals. Nadi Radio even offered CPDLC communication for the later part of the flight. This was the perfect opportunity to test our new DCDU and some of the reporting features I had never used before.
So make sure to check out some of the key moments below:

That runway at take-off seems a bit short. Could you stop the plane at V1 and not exceed the length?

It's interesting that you are mentioning this as the exact same thought went through my mind as I was going down the runway and approaching V1. Runway 34R at YSSY is 7,999 ft long. I did takeoff from intersection T5 but that's really not much different from full length (which is from T6). I got the takeoff performance data from TOPCAT. It was a FLEX takeoff and I could review the numbers (in case the weather or the weights did change). I am actually inclined to reproduce the takeoff and double check everything, then see what happens if I do a high-speed reject just before V1 (as I am still using P3D I can reproduce the weather at the time).

I just did a few experiments with rejected takeoffs in the same conditions. I still need to edit the footage but hopefully I'll have the video posted soon. Stay tuned.

Here it the video of my attempts at rejecting the takeoff right before V1: th-cam.com/video/WE_M193At3Y/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for the comment. I am glad I decided to join the flight, even if it was only for a few hours.

    FPS seems to be low

I typically get 30 to 60 FPS. Keep in mind that I am running three 4K TV with a single RTX3090.

nice to see cpdlc being used

Indeed. I don't have the "ATC message" push button implemented quite yet and for some reason the aural alert was not playing so it took me a little while to realize I received a message. But overall it worked well.

@@captaintango Very relatable, even with the atc message p/b flashing right in your face and there being the message most of the time you don't even notice it. But seeing it being used in sim to is really nice, helps me a lot during cruise, approach, but also to get the PDC
