    Amazon is reportedly spending nearly $500 million a year on its games development division, but despite having all the money in the world they have been struggling to produce a successful title.

      They aren't making games for players to enjoy.
      That's the biggest problem.
      All their releases so far have been uninteresting, copycat stuff that isn't worth spending time on.

      Another problem is that they didn't really bother marketing their games at all.
      ANYONE saw any ads for Crucible?
      Heck, I saw more ads for Battlerite than I did Crucible...that says a lot.
      And the only reason I've heard of New World is because I follow MMO news hoping to find a good one.

    It’s because amazon doesn’t care about good games, just profits. They do market research and see what people like then make a knock off of other popular games and wonder why people don’t like it.

      There were so many problems with Crucible, Even the name of the game was problematic. Ask any serious gamer what they think of when they hear the word Crucible. Any FPS gamer will immediately say Destiny as Crucible was the name of its PvP mode. This plus the genres they were chasing were so oversaturated that Amazon had a hard time defining exactly what Crucible was about.

    • @nebulous9280
      @nebulous9280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@typhir5911 Not to mention that the gameplay itself didn't even work when the modes themselves occasionally did. Ajonah, for example, had her grappling hook ability. Compare ANY grappling hook ability in like, any game on the planet, and it's usually fast, fluid, and intuitive. Ajonah's hook was LUDICROUSLY clunky. Felt like swinging through syrup. I can appreciate it being used to swing, and being able to change the tether length, but in reality they should've made that movement way faster and simpler. Removing a player's options is sometimes a good thing if the options inhibit gameplay.

    Amazon and Google only got into Gaming because they knew Microsoft's xCloud will be the future in a couple decades and wanted a slice of that pie figuring they could do it too since they are the only two other companies capable of that kind of that level of cloud infrastructure. Nobody had any actual passion for games though so it's failed miserably. Obviously Microsoft is driven by money too as it's still a company, but they have a shit load of employees that do genuinely care about delivering to consumers (and have plenty of experience in the industry) hence why they see so much success.

  • @SnappyDude
    @SnappyDude 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The sad part is that all the games from Amazon have decent bones to build on but where just so mismanaged. It's clear that Amazon's corporate data and interests pushed development. Breakaway was not put on Steam because it would cost Amazon money. When it could have been a really fun alternative game in the shooter heavy landscape, similar to Rocket League. Crucible could have been a great hero shooter with a tighter focus on its actual gameplay and moba gametype, but instead they put a battle royal on the back because it was the hip thing. Then they shoved it out the door way too early. Yeah both of them had issues, but there are some decent ideas to start from. Its a shame.

    Great video! It's interesting to hear that Crucible likely failed due to inherent problems with hero design and hostile development environments. I always assumed it was a lack of focus and that maybe if all the development effort had been put into one of their three wildly different gamemodes it would've been more successful.
    Part of me respected some of the "kitchen-sink" game design: Introduce a bunch of concepts and game modes and then follow up with development on what players are actually interested in. Team Fortress 2 did something to a smaller degree by starting a bunch of different map types and basing future maps on whichever maps were popular. But of course, if you can't get your heroes to synergize and feel like a team then really what's the point of even having a team vs. team mode? It sounds like an inherent problem with the framework of the game, which probably could've been caught and corrected if higher-ups actually listened to their developers.

    I played Crucible for a bit! It was fun, but the map was so huge you could lose the game without even seeing the enemy once. And because people felt like they can do anything on their own, they would tend to run into groups of enemies and die very quickly. As a 3rd Person Hero Shooter, there's nothing like it and it felt really cool to chase people down in a world that felt alive, vs in a typical moba where pve camps span in the same location every few min, this game had wildlife everywhere. The map was just too big and some characters were also op like the alexa voiced bot. I do remember they had a massssive pvp mode when it first launched that got me hitting up all my friends to download and play. Was like a moba but up to 32 players i think, so intense and for the weeks that mode was around, i got my fill.

    With paragon probably coming back soon, it could be a good video idea to see it’s timeline from where it began, when it got shutdown and maybe the potential comeback of the game

    I believe the journalist's last name is pronounced Schry-er (with the same intonation as "higher"), and the word is amalgamation (amalgam + ation).
    I know it comes off as nitpicky, but I really like this channel and want to to see it reach more viewers, and making sure the video has all the polish it can goes a long way.
    Keep up the good work!

    Crucible was really the most painful video game fail ever for me. The game had SO MUCH potential, like it was insane how much you could see what the game could be like ! Contrary to popular beliefs, there were so many unique features and elements, and even though the characters were all "self sufficient" you still needed your team for the big teamfights and every character has its own thing ! There even was a counter system that worked pretty well where some heroes are much better against some than others and the ability enhancement was also really cool. The main issue was just that the higher ups pushed the game to be released when it was not ready, and you could clearly see that because for the first month or so the devs fixed way more bugs than I had ever seen in a video game, they were listening and they knew what their game needed : they always said that the voice chat was a feature they wanted to implemant but didn't have time to, they always said that they wanted to bring more diversity in the mobs depending on where on the map you are, and so many things like that.
    It's really tragic to see how, just because someone high up didn't want to wait, the devs had to see their project, which you could really see they loved so much, be dragged in the mud: they just could not meet the time constraints. I still hope that the game comes back someday, but more polished and released when the devs actually think it is ready to be launched.
    At the very least, Crucible became an example of what not to do : push a release when a game isn't ready, and I am so glad that New World has been delayed so much because it's much better to wait for another year than to push something unfinished.

      Yes exactly, if i could say just two words to summarize the game it would be "great potential", i played the beta of the game and you could clearly see that the game was not good the way it was, but you could also see the big potential it had, if the team could still work in that game im pretty sure it could be a really awesome game

    The thing that aggravates me the most about all of it, is that Crucible not only did it have potential, but it could've filled in a space in the gaming sphere that we currently are lacking in. Many people saw it, and thought it would be the game to pick up where Gigantic dropped the mantle. Gigantic was a great game, but not enough people knew about it, and due to money issues it died.
    Crucible could've picked up the mantle, it just needed more time to cook...but Amazon took it out the oven, people said it was aight but still a little doughy, and instead of putting it back in the oven, they just throw it in the trash and start cooking a new dish.

    This whole video could have been summed up on a sigle word: PROFIT. Amazon never wanted to make games, only the profit from games, so inevitably they would fail. Games are art, and you cant just do art for a profit, that wil never work.
