      trubblman the black cap toe Oxford is not the shoe of Wall Street bankers. It’s the shoe of the chauffeurs who drive their cars. The bankers are wearing whole cuts and wing tips and dressier loafers or darker brown/oxblood cap toes. Gordon Gekko didn’t wear black cap toes. And brown shoes with navy is plenty popular on Wall Street.

    You are aiming for a classic, timeless, dare I say safe, style.
    Which I agree with, more or less..
    But you're overlooking other factors such as culture, climate and other social factors.
    This is what the users from Italy and California were trying to tell you, it's not nonsense.
    If you actually visit Italy, especially Southern Italy, you will notice that
    men do in fact tend to be bold and more
    confident in their clothing choices and overall style.
    There's no right or wrong when it comes to style.. there's known conventions and standards, and there's those who play around them.

    I would agree for the most part with the video. However, I think his argument was a little off the mark. It’s not so much the light brown color. I generally think of medium and light brown shoes as more of a spring, summer or warmer climate shoe color. Hence the commenters from California and Italy.
    So, more to the point is the style of the light brown shoe and the fabric of the suit. I think a navy blue linen suit looks incredible with a light brown loafer. As well as a nice mid to light brown brogue looks great with a traditional English navy blue pinstriped suit. That’s my two cents.

    Although I do agree with the assessment of light brown shoes versatility. Light brown shoes with navy is common enough (as you say, lots of people do it), so it’s not as though it stands out as you suggest. I get what you’re saying that you don’t like the look, that’s fair enough, but I disagree that it stands out.

      It’s sort of like a bulky dive watch with a suit.
      But at some point you just have to accept that it is at least common. No need to like it, but it’s commonplace at this point.

    • @v_r_
      @v_r_  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Commonplace doesn’t make it right, that I’m sure we can agree on. And I feel like it’s my job to bring it up as people don’t know what they don’t know. And some in the comments mentioned that very thought, so I’m happy with my decision. I don’t aim to change everybody, but if I can change just one person’s mind like I did with my cousin 5 years ago then I’ve succeeded. Your mileage may vary, of course.

    Vladimir, your observations are spot on. Elegance isn't easy to teach, it comes from within and has a lot to do with sensitivity, color sense and taste. I've lived in Italy almost thirty years and here there's a classical elegance and a more daring elegance that is more often sported by younger guys. I'm sixty and use the classical type of elegance and am careful about what I wear with light brown shoes, generally denim pants. The austerity brogues by TLB are a nice compromise, not dark brown but a rich coffee color which renders them more versatile. Nice suit by the way...

    First off, that is a killer suit you have on. Second, your pairing of light brown shoes with light grey is on point, as you prove with images during this video. I know for myself, light brown shoes just pop off a computer screen, and I ended up purchasing them more than darker, more versatile shoes, and didn’t realize what you are talking about until it was too late. You can pair light brown with some dark denim - but that is kind of the limit with light/dark pairings, IMO. Other than that, yeah, you need light grey trousers, which is very limiting. I kind of intuited what you are talking about, without wanting to admit my mistake. Thanks for stating it clearly. the truth hurts LOL

      Thank you, I've wanted a flannel suit in that Houndstooth pattern for as long as I can remember. And I completely agree that darker denim and light shoes work together just fine due to the casual nature of Light Brown shoes. The good news is, you can still wear those beautiful Light Brown shoes by just getting some lighter colored suits/trousers. Thanks for watching!

    I see where you're coming from. But one thing I noticed is that you see different tones of grey (dark, medium, light, etc) but you just mention navy...and not blue. A royal blue or lighter tones look great with lighter shoes, particularly in summer... granted I live in Europe and perhaps it has to do with the welcoming of summer that we've waited for so long that takes us to wear different fabrics and some more daring colors (not Italian).
    I agree with you on what makes an outfit flow and your advice is on point. I do think light brown has its place with blues too, maybe not in a suit if it's too much but with odd trousers they can look great. Just my opinion of course, as I don't agree with the old rules "no brown in town" and "blue and green should never be seen", etc

    Once again everytning you mention in this video is right. When you dress formally, with trousers or suits you have to avoid big contast between your shoes and trousers. Another rule is that you can not wear brown shoes (even very dark ones) with a black suit, even though there is no big contrast there. Actually, I was waiting for you to mention that. A more difficult question in my opinion is, whether you can wear light brown dress shoes with dark blue jeans or chinos, cassually. Thank you for one more informative video.

    • @v_r_
      @v_r_  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What’s up, Nikos? You’re 100% right about Black suits as they can only be worn with Black shoes. I think since Light Brown shoes lend themselves to a more casual vibe, I’d say they’re fine with darker denim. Another interesting point that I forgot to mention is that the opposite works just fine even though the contrast still exists. I’m referring to light colored suits like Light Grey with dark shoes.

  • @stephenathon
    @stephenathon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have heard not to wear black shoes with navy suits and used to think that way. I think it depends on the texture, weight, and shade of the fabric. Some blues are better suited to brown and some to black.

    • @v_r_
      @v_r_  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s so funny that I’ve never heard that. Black is a color that’s known to go with everything so it’s very odd that someone thought it wouldn’t work with Navy. But a Navy suit and Dark Brown shoes is a beautiful combination.

    I'm glad you brought this up. So many style guys on TH-cam were talking about how the light tan brogue is the most versatile shoe out there. So, I bought a pair in 2017. I've only worn them ONCE. They look almost orange. I've recently stripped much of the dye off them to tone them down. I totally agree, when I put them on in the mirror with dark wash jeans (I dress causally most of the time), the contrast is TOO MUCH. Same with dark olive chinos, dark grey chinos, gray wool trousers, and so on. They've been sitting unused for YEARS! Most versatile shoe my ass. Not for me anyway. Yeah, I agree, you cannot or should not wear light tan shoes with dark pants. And when you wear light tan shoes, you should try to repeat the color somewhere else, (like in your watch, jewelry, coat, and belt) so the shoes don't stand out so much. So yes, light khaki pants, light olive pants, white, light grey, and so on. Thank you.

      Hey Tolui! Yes that’s correct, it’s a Black & White houndstooth. I’ve been wanting a suit in that pattern for years.

    Agreed. You may overpower your outfit with extreme contrast.
    I think your ability to wear items that seem to compliment each other seamlessly projects great style.
    Items that are not too matching but have enough contrast to make your outfit interesting, creates an effortlessly stylish appearance.
    Let’s face it, people know that you chose those pieces.
    What you want, is for your outfit to reflect that you are stylish enough to know what you are doing, without having to overthink it.
    I have a great pair of light brown shoes, but I only wear them in the summer with light grey, or white pants.
    It seems to fit with the lighter, brighter aesthetic of summer.
    That being said, I think people are taking your advice too literally.
    Your intention is to provide guidance, so that people can avoid incongruity in their style, by understanding why something might not work.
    At the end of the day, people can wear whatever they like.
    If you know what you are doing, are intentional about your choices,
    and wear them with confidence, what may not work for others, may work well for you.
    However, it is your ability to understand nuance and subtlety, that will empower you to take risks with you style.
    Understanding balance and contrast, allows you to be creative.
    After all, knowledge is power.
    Finally, a fashionable man who I really relate to.
    Great advice.

      Thank you, Dave! That is a great way of putting things, I wish I could articulate it as well as you did. But you’re exactly right, my goal is to provide guidance for those that don’t realize that the jarring contrast is a little off-putting but people are free to wear what they want. When I make my videos, I always think about it like I’m talking to the younger 30 year-old me who was hard headed and thought he knew everything about style but clearly didn’t. I think most people get me and others fight back, which is natural since no one like to be told that they’re wrong. But my goal is to only change a few men’s perspectives, and I think I’ve done that. So I’m happy!

    I was 12 in 1960 the first time I was in Italy and when I saw the shoes I thought, “What the hell?” But at the same time I thought, “These area really kool !” Thing is you really have to be an Italian almost to pull off dressing like they do. My pick for collaborator is Sven Raphael Scheider.
