Losing a child is the worst agony you can endure without dying yourself. I consider myself fortunate in the sense that my wife and I managed to stay together through our suffering despite trying to tear each other apart in our grief. Now we have two beautiful sons who will always have a baby big sister that watches over them from wherever she might be now.
This movie caught us off guard when we went to see it and almost had to leave but we stuck it out and ended up really liking it. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do. Cheers :)
Well said. I lost my youngest daughter two years ago. This movie, though I dearly love it, breaks me every time. To know that you will lose your child at a young age and decide that that love is well worth the pain . . . wow 😞 Beautiful but heart rending.

Sorry. I’ve never lost a child but it’s my greatest fear and I don’t think it’s there’s words good enough to say to someone who has but sorry is all we have. I’ve tried to mentally prepare myself (as much as I can) just in case I lose one but I know nothing will help much. But one thing I’ll try to remember is that beginning and ends don’t matter as much as what happens in between. All things come and go but the time we get is more important than the time we don’t get. And I can only hope that if I do lose a child, one day I’ll rest in the joy of the memories of the time I had with them more than I mourn them and I’d never regret having them. I believe the decision to have her baby in spite of knowing she’d lose her to cancer was made for the same reason. And I’d do the same. I hope you all feel that way too.

@@AgentOccamshe was a little slow on the realization that the girl was indeed her daughter and the fact that she was seeing the future and not the past. But she didn’t take too long to figure it out, just a tad bit longer than she was meant to during the reveal.
The way Louise convinces General Shang to stop the attack was by telling him what his wife's dying words were and thus proving to him that the aliens' language has taught her how to time-travel. Her words were: "In war there are no winners, only widows."
Which makes no sense at all and would never ever ever ever EVER work. One of the very worst films I have ever seen. And I watch a lot of films. All kinds of films. I love SF. And maybe that's why I hate Arrival. It's a Lifetime Movie of the Week. At best.

I have seen around 14,000 movies. Yes, there is a website you can use to keep track of the movies you have seen. I can think of maybe a dozen that I hate. Really HATE. Not just dislike. But hate. The real thing. Arrival is one of them.
The birds purpose is to be the “canary in the coal mine”

The canary chirps just about constantly also, so as long as you hear it you are ok. Once it is silent it is probably dead and you need to get out now.
Abbot and Costello were a great comedy team from the 40's and 50's they made lots of movies and tv shows as well as live performances. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is a good movie, but check out their most famous routine "Who's On First."
Routine which, of course, is the reason for the heptapods being nicknamed after them. Communication failure because of language limitations.
This movie won an Oscar on their sound. So can understand why you feel it so viscerally.
Yes, it was impressive in some technical ways. But the acting is pure crap. And so is the story.
This movie is one of a handful of movies that genuinely blew my mind. When the reveal happens, I just sat in the theater and felt like my consciousness was instantly expanded lol

I see a commenter suggesting that she knew the other linguist would confuse the Sanskrit word for war, but that's not what was going on here. Her point was that the word for war literally means a "desire for more cows," it was a warning that someone who doesn't truly understand a language before communicating could start a war in their ignorance, something many other nations nearly did, but it was also an early look at the way language alters perception, which is what this entire film was really about. And the frame for that concept was a future mother having her own perception of time altered through the learning of an alien language, causing her to slowly begin to think like they do, and then slowly accepting that death and loss would come along with her greatest joys and making the decision to take that leap anyway, something her future husband would not be able to understand, and it would eventually drive them apart, his heart undoubtedly broken by the loss. We even see her perceive time at the end in such a non linear way, she's flooded with memories of his love with their first embrace. I can appreciate that you got some neat ideas about other alien stories, but Arrival really isn't about aliens. It's exploring the question "is the joy of life ultimately worth the pain that it brings?" It's exploring the idea that the language we use shapes our way of thinking, as well as our perception. It's a far more fascinating and emotionally riveting science fiction story than any straight forward first contact film. I personally found the emotional impact of the ending haunting and unforgettable. One of my top 5 science fiction films for sure.
She knew Hannah would die. She embraced every moment of Hannah's all too short life. Max Richter, "On the Nature of Daylight" - it's on TH-cam. A haunting, beautiful, creation. Poignant, sad, full of...

@@solongdentahlplaan7975 Hannah's death is awful. A mother's love is beautiful. We'll all die. We go on in the face of death - it's part of life. We can be angry, forlorn, miserable, or we can choose to embrace life, and love, as best we can, as life gives us opportunities, which is what Louise did. Her husband could not accept what he was told and left. It's not a simple subject - the story can make one think, but not everyone will want to consciously go down that road.
It even goes far beyond just knowing what would happen to Hannah. She had already lived through and experienced those "memories" in person. Remember what she said to her future (ex)husband "I had forgotten what it's like to be held by you".
As an educator and a visual learner, I love how this film really breaks down the basic blocks of language and communication and how that shapes our concept of - and our relationship to - time. The music is God tier and the director, Denis Villlenueve, is one of my favorites. He directed Sicario and the new Dune films. Arrival is such an intellectually stimulating film for me it's become an instant rewatchable - even though it's also heartbreaking ❤

There are no such thing as "visual learner".
It has been disproved many times.
Could you be with and love someone who you knew was going to die an early death?
Would you want to go back in time and live your life again, knowing that your child would die early?
Would the joy of being with that loved one be so great that you would do it all over again?
Just like in the film "Interstellar", "Arrival" challenges us to reflect on what is most important in our lives. Ourselves? Our loved ones? All of Humanity?
Interstellar had some interesting challenges. Arrival is an insipid mess.
I just don't understand someone who is so educated can abandon his child & wife? Like wtf? Even if she didn't tell you early enough that's because she was special 1 in a billion literally. It's not like she cheated on him or anything. It's literally just a lie to not hurt him. & maybe a little selfish as she might have wanted the girl & she thought if she tells him she is not gonna get the girl ever. & he might have thought that she basically used him but comon it's your child. I don't support leaving your child & wife just because of that.
Arrival & the s1e3 of black mirror also is fascinating & kinda similar to this.
@@datdudeinred ….. People are flawed and complicated, especially when it comes to their emotions. We all have our emotional breaking points. We all have lines that we expect our loved ones to never cross. Louise’s selfish act crossed Ian’s line, apparently.
@@datdudeinred Ian didn't abandon their child, he just separated with Louis. You can be separated but still be a part of your child's life, as Louis said that Hannah regularly saw her dad.
Ian was the one proposing to have a child and of course, Louis who have seen the life she will have with Hannah accepted it. She did eventually tell Ian the truth. In this we can see the duality of the choice we were presented: "If you know what will happen in the future, would you change things?"
Louis chose to embrace whatever happens and enjoy every moment of it while Ian would choose not to experience all the good things in favour of avoiding the tragic event.
You were way to worried about predicting the movie, and you actually convinced yourself you understood everything before hand, which does degrade the experience. It takes away space from realizing how beautiful it is.

You were more happy at saying they were going to have the baby at the end that you seemed so happy rather than understanding the emotional side of it that Louise is going to have that baby knowing that it will develop cancer and die as a child. Like that's heartbreaking as hell, and you are laughing.

This is not an easy movie to understand even if English is your primary language, so the fact that she was able to figure out plot points and understand everything being said is a testament to her intelligence.

I still think that Louise, knowing the future, shouldn't have told Ian about their daughters sickness. They never would've divorced and he would be there at the end of his daughter's life.
She saved the world, but she is a villain. She created her daughter knowing she would die prematurely and painfully; alll so she could enjoy her. Shame.
@@solongdentahlplaan7975 What an interesting take on Louise's decision. I don't know how long Hannah lived but, for sake of argument, let's say 15 years. If you had a rare terminal disease and someone gave you the choice to either live a life with 10 good and healthy years or choose to never have been born to avoid a painful death, which would you choose? Just because Hannah's life was short by our normal standards of longevity, doesn't mean it wasn't full of purpose and happiness. Was Louise's decision the selfish one you describe or a truly courageous one? Perhaps Louise allowed herself to feel the heartbreak of losing her daughter so that Hannah would have the chance to experience the joy of life. As a dad, that's how I would feel. Thousands of kids suffer from painful life-threatening diseases. Would it be better if none of them had ever been born in order to avoid that suffering? Do you think they themselves would choose that? There are certainly differing viewpoints on this issue.
@johncourtright1632 That's alot, bro. I'ma just go off the movie, which is just a movie. Imagine being Hannah, a sweet little girl being loved by your mother. You experience great things like the world and art even. You get older and formulate your own future, your dreams: the perfect career and perhaps the perfect partner. But then you get sick even before you go on your first date, very sick. You're told that you're going to die.
All those dreams and aspirations were just false motivation, a lie. And your dear mother KNEW the whole time, but let you believe the lies to keep you happy.
It's a farcry from real life. I'm just talking about the movie. Screw Louise.

Like John alluded contrasting views are still valid and they have to be because we each come with our own perspective and meanings to begin with so for sure we can get something different out of it. To imply your reading is more correct because you're " just talking about the movie" I don't accept. I saw the exact same movie too and yeah I can see both sides but its courage and love that I takeaway from Louise's decision not selfishness and insecurity. You seem to be focused on the loss but Hannah doesn't experience that. It's Louise who must carry the knowing and still give her daughter the experience of a beautiful life, albeit short. But how amazing that Louise could give her that while holding it throughout, then face the pain and and also carry on with the grief when she's gone.

A very beautiful and emotionally triggering song. It has been used in other movies and TV shows, but it hits so perfectly here in this movie. It really really gets me everytime i watch this film. I love all of the movies I have seen by Denis Villeneuve. His movies are so immersive.
An Excellent film for those who don’t need an action-laden story. This film appeals to one’s intellect and emotions. It’s similar to “Interstellar” in that regard.
Exactly why it's perfect for her.
Hey Bisscute, the film is showing you future events but your mind doesn't know that. So the only way for you brain to comprehend what is going on is to interpret the unrelated images as being from the past. Which is what we typically understand when watching a movie. That's what makes "Arrival' so original it uses our own brain to trick us and create confusion so the ahhh moment was always in our face never hidden, But it happens way before we are able to comprehand it. GEnius concept for sure.
This is one rare example of a type of movie that just shouldn’t be done by reactors. I’ve tried watching several and most spend a lot of their time going between a nonstop combination of verbal head scratching, wild guesses, and thoughtful hypotheses (and then are all self congratulatory when one of those latter two is eventually correct). No matter what any of these reactors say to dispute it, this approach puts them in a situation where they miss out on a lot of the nuances, dialogues, music, sound cues, etc. Fortunately this reactor is also quite intelligent, so tries her best to maintain her lines of thinking and maintain some limitations on the distractions. Unfortunately a proper reaction to something like this requires a lot of wisdom and experience to know when less is more so that presents another problem; if done in a manner that avoids the above pitfalls, it would indeed end up containing a fair amount of “hmm”/“wow”/“WTF is going on” for 45+ minutes, or be a harshly edited 20 minute boring version where all the proper context is completely missed. Valiant effort here but still has far too much monologuing for my tastes. Hopefully she understands this is just meant to be constructive criticism and she continues to refine and perfect her craft as she continues with this journey.
One of the best movies ever and also one of the best movies to watch people reacting to.
Usually movies don't stick with me for longer than shortly after watching.
But the question it throws at you in the end kept me busy for some days. You know where the journey goes, it's short and pretty but the end is not. Will you still go on that journey?

Those heptapods are such dedicated Sheena Easton fans.
The disease that Louise tells Ian about that makes him leave is the disease their daughter will get one day -- she tells him that their daughter will get sick and die. Ian can't take it and that's why he never looks at his daughter the same way again. And he blames Louise for the pain, because *she knew before they got pregnant* and if he had known before having a baby he wouldn't have done it. But Louise thinks it's worth it to have Hannah for the short time she can, so she does it anyway. Such a sad and beautiful story.
So I’ve only just recently come across Biss and her channels. She seems ferociously smart and has the best laugh on the whole internet. One thing that is amazing is doing all these reactions in a second language, even though she is fluent (hey, she dreams in English!) that has got to be difficult. Especially when the movie she has been tasked to watch is one so complex and nuanced, where the subtleties of understanding and communication are at the very core of the movie. Imagine understanding it well enough (not in your mother tongue), and then communicating thoughts, guesses, interpretations, criticisms and flights of fancy (also not in your mother tongue) and being able to entertain the internet masses, and the multitudes contained therein.
So it took Biss a little longer to grasp the significance of “who is that child?” than some others - forgivable, for the reasons described above, and it didn’t break her heart the way it broke mine. She did get there in the end, and got the pain of a parent losing a child at the beginning, but perhaps some of the emotional punch glanced off her. She is an agent of chaos, after all, hence for her a movie about unity, understanding, grief and peace became the potential starting point for a competitive bloodbath of spectacular kills - but diff’rent strokes for diff’rent folks. Still an excellent reactor. Bravo, Biss.
It could also be a matter of already knowing that made the ending less emotionally impactful to her than it was to some. That's how it was for me the first time I saw this movie. I teared up at the beginning, when it was first showing Hannah's birth, snippets of her life, and her death. The tragedy of it hit me in the feels. But at the end, I didn't get that emotional hit because I already knew it would happen. At the end, I thought the added context of knowing how she experiences time made it beautiful that even knowing the outcome, Hannah was special enough to her that she was willing to do it all again, but I was smiling at the end, not crying. If that makes sense?

Hi, first time I comment here... I watch you because you are intelligent and I enjoy how you catch on pretty quick to what's going on. I really love it when you enjoy yourself and laugh out loud. You also look almost exactly like a friend of mine that I met in University in Greece and she is Greek from the north and I am lucky to say that we are still friends after so many years. Ian left Louise because she ended up telling Ian that Hannah was going to die early in life to cancer and she knew this prior to them having her and never told him in advance. I'm guessing she had to have her regardless in order to have the break through to understanding the alien language she obtained in the past. I guess it was just too much for Ian to bare....
I think it is about fate and time travel. Future events are fixed and cannot be changed.
@@peterbreingan3181 Yeah that's what i was alluding to. If she didn't have her child the timeline wouldn't be the same and she would of never had to ability to see the future. She can't deviate from her fate even with the foresight to see future events.
When Louise was talking about the sanskrit word for war's literal translation being a desire for more cows, I think the implication is that back in that era, that was the main reason why societies would go to war. They just needed more food to feed themselves.

This is without a doubt one of my favorite movied ever, and like you mentioned amany times, the visuals and the storytelling of it even the sound is beautiful
I have always avoided this movie because of the first Arrival movie 1996 , but watching this with you I now own it in my movie collection.

I'm always very impressed with your ability to see the angles that many miss. It's the main reason I like your channel so much. Occasionally, the being proud of yourself obscures the impact of the thing you're reacting to, but I guess that's to be expected sometimes.

Regarding the beginning of the film, it might be a good idea to halt arms sales during such a crisis for reasons other than military. In 1938, a radio broadcast of H.G. Wells' _"The War of the Worlds"_ (narrated by Orson Welles) sparked panic across the US when people thought that the radio play was a real news broadcast. The ensuing panic led to accidents, and the sight of smoke from such incidents in the distance led some to believe that the cause was marauding Martians. Law enforcement even had to disarm people about to kill their own families rather than let them be captured by the aliens.

The "desire for more cows" part was funny because she was trying to discredit one of her competing language professors that the military was considering. She did it by telling Forrest Whitaker to ask the other professor the Sanscrit word for 'war', knowing he would get it wrong, confusing it for the Sanscrit word for "desire for more cows".
I watch, to re-enjoy old movies from a different point of view (yours). Always be yourself. Love your reactions. - This movie is like "Interstellar", quite deep.
I feel a bit like they applied the Nordic mythology way of thinking; time is a wheel. They explain it pretty well in the last two God of War games. I love this movie, the acting was great, the pacing was amazing. Love the reaction too, keep up the good work!

When I'm watching a movie at home, I think about it to my self, but when Im with other people I have to shut up and let them watch it in silence.
It's amusing to think that she's going to use the kangaroo story to try to impress somebody because she missed the part where they say it is a lie because she was too busy talking to the camera 😂

For the Heptapods timeline isn't a line, they experience all the moments as present, thus - no flashbacks, no memories, no premonitions, no predictions. This is no time circle either.
Whole plot is based on Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, that language determines way of perceiving reality. That's why Louise is experiencing those strange "future flashbacks" when learning Heptapods language. She doesn't need to write down phone number of Chinese general, because she's living the moment of meeting with him and being at the base and talking to her daughter at the same time. No faulty memories ;)
The question is - are the Heptapods lives predetermined? There is a problem with destiny and free will; if you know all your deeds since the start of your existence, can you do something in a different way? Do Heptapods start their existence at all? We know they can be "in dying process"...
Maybe that's why they need/needed our help in 3000 years? Help of the race, that perceives time differently?

Personally, I fully enjoy the predictions. I won't watch a reaction for a movie that I haven't seen multiple times. Forget the haters, you're one of the better reactors.
Computer and cellphone icons, traffic signs, they're semasiographic. Their meaning is universal, regardless of the word for their function in one's language. A Recycle Bin is recognizable on a computer screen, doesn't matter which language the SO is. You know what it is.
I loved the insights into languages and how they wire (or rewire) our brain. The Sanskrit word for war means "a desire for more cows". A nation, probably not a democracy, declares war to get more stuff, which is very unlike our modern notions of why wars should be fought. They also would have not been on board with Louise saying in war there are no winners, only widows. This presupposes that everyone is equally valuable, and their losses also. That Sanskrit ruler would have said there are indeed winners: look at all the cows I have obtained, which was the desired objective. This presupposes that he and his fellow elites are of importance, and the rest not so much. It's fascinating to go down this particular rabbit hole.

It's a good message that we need to communicate better before jumping to aggressive conclusions. We do revert to animals when we stop using our brains. Imagine what they could do if they have control over gravity.

I wonder if she actually understood the plot? I mean, in summary: the language defines the way you think and because the language the aliens brought as a gift is "non-linear" (it doesn't have a begining or an ending, that explains the circular "words") it unlocks in the human brain the hability to see the future once you learn it, thus the perception of time becomes a circle rather than a line and the future becomes a memory.

I suggest to any one who loves this movie to read the short story by Ted Chiang titled " The Story of your Life." The story obviously is different than the movie but goes into greater detail.
Ted Chiang has two books of short stories. The Story of Your Life and Others" and "Exhalation"
After a century of aliens being anthropomorphized, it is so refreshing to see a film maker do it the right way. An alien species completely different from us bipedal hominids.

To get the reference of Abbott and Costello I suggest watching the comedy sketch "Who's On First" by them.

I have seen the movie a couple of times, and I have seen half a dozen or so reactions here on TH-cam. And just now, the meaning of one of the sentences of the heptapods clicked: "There is no time."

what a lot of people miss in this movie is that "Abbott and Costello" must have already seen the bomb and must have already seen Abbott's death - but they go through the plan anyway.

It is is a type of United States security clearance investigation involving background checks like speaking to past friends, employers, and co-workers. Yes you are correct, it is the canary in a coal mine scenerio, to detect that the atmosphere remains safe. The alien language once understood lets you see the future, like Louise does. She now knows she has a daughter that will die from an illness, and has the choice to give birth to her or not. She decides to have the child, but does not tell the father until years later that their child will die, because she feared he would not want the child in the first place, knowing the pain of losing her to illness. You might want to watch 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (1977), directed by Steven Spielberg. It has a similar plot to it and is considered a classic science fiction movie based on real U.F.O./alien observations/interactions by Dr. J. Allen Hynek (who also makes a brief cameo in the movie). I don't understand why people would be mad about you trying to understand the movie while watching it. That's what everybody with a functioning brain does while watching movies. That's what movies are, in part, made for! Especially movies like this one. It's for us to THINK!

I love this movie! The first time I watched the movie I was expecting some action movie, so at the conclusion, I did not know how I felt about this movie. I have since watched this movie a couple more times and I just love it. I bought the cd soundtrack too. Your reaction was beautiful. You can tell how into the story you were as it unfolded. 😊

The way they pronounced "tinnitus" in the movie (as though the word ended with "-itis") is fairly common, but the "correct" English pronunciation is more similar to yours.

I have not seen this and am looking forward to this. A small movie announcement. On May 4th the 4K, remastered version of my favorite film was released. "Wings of Desire", dir. Wim Wenders German subtitled. This is a beautiful B&W film. The only thing I know about the 4K, remastered version is that (I am told) it comes a close as possible to watching the projected film.
WOD is one of my Top 3 films ever, & vastly overlooked!!!

@@BissFlix Not a sci fan so I probably wouldn't normally watch this movie. Since your members usually suggest good movies, that and your reaction might motivate me. If I hate it I will drink many shot glasses of tuica and sleep it off.

Don't change your style, it's part of what makes your channel unique, watching you deduce the plot is interesting.
You don't need to justify the way you react. Your personal process of trying to understand what's going on in a film you're reacting to, shows the level of your awareness and cognition: what some people clumsily term intelligence. Please don't take onboard the negativity of those without the awareness to understand how it is you think and feel, those are aspects of who you are and are things you never need to apologise for. It's not your fault that they're not able to understand who you are, that's their issue, not yours.
You explore, investigate and journey through story and ideas just like all of my closest friends and I do, and I suspect so do most of the people watching. We're just not as vocal about it as those who like to complain about everyone else because of their misunderstood fear of their own, not insurmountable inadequacy. ❤
