Great reaction as usual Biss. Miss Bisscute, the captain of Red October was played by Sean Connery, the first man to play the character of James Bond, his filmography is extensive, but I suggest two films starring him for future reactions: Il nome della rosa (in italian, 1986) and The Rock with Nicolas Cage, great performances beyond his accent that you will surely enjoy.😊

Cold War American submariner here. I was on a Boomer out of Rotten Groton, and played the game with the Russians. This is an incredibly accurate movie, based on an even more accurate book. As part of Groton, I got to see the advance screening of this movie, sans any civilian employees or dependants, the same day our counterparts in San Diego did. The very few inaccuracies were called out, but there was basically unanimous laughter when Alec Baldwin asked the question, "How do you get a crew to want to get off a nuclear sub?". Everyone knows the answer is simple: open the hatch.

I think it was cool enough that the movie started out with actors acting as part of the USSR speaking in Russian at the beginning. That way, you could instantly tell what side Sean Connery was on.
You are totally right. His native Scottish accent was way too strong trying to speak in English with a Russian accent as well as others with native British or Irish accents to those who could tell at least. At 7:30 in the video, she stated that "his Russian doesn't sound like native Russian" and that was just at the very beginning of the movie.
It's can be hard to try and pretend to have an accent of a different language that your not native to depending on where your from. Image all the actors in the movie on in the USSR side trying to do that throughout the movie. 😆

There are two types of Sonar, "Passive" where the Sub just listens and stays undetectable. The second is "Active" sonar which sends out sound waves and gives away the senders position... 99% of the time they just use Passive.

      Addendum to this....
A ship or submarines propellers make noise, like how your tires make noise while driving... faster you go, more noise you make. But if the submarine cuts engines to stop (the propellers, not the actual engine, via a transmission, like a car), then it doesnt make noise... when the Red October did a "crazy Ivan" turn around the Dallas, the Dallas put the gearvto Stop, but boats drift, so the danger was theyre now quiet but might drift into the Red October.
Other things that make noise are opening torpedo doors, flooding torpedo tubes, and the hull stretching or compressing from changing depth.
The Caterpillar Drive on the Red October was a big deal because the noise it would make would be soooo quiet compared to the propeller noise.
Countermeasures they used worked because they made the water bubbly, and the bubbles collapsed making noise.
When Ramius was responding to Mancuso's persicope messages by ordering "verify our range to target, 1 ping only"... that is what Active Sonar is... which is how a bat navigates... sending out a sound, then timing it's return. But it also tells your target exactly where you are, like shouting in a dark room.

The “see through” shots are not mistakes. It’s how they did green screen shots, where the foreground film is made slightly transparent compared to the background film. This softens the edges to make it look more believable, otherwise the outline would stick out and it would look horrible. The downside is you can slightly see through it if you pay attention. Star Wars used this technique in many of the spaceship shots and you can slightly see through cockpit metal props.

"Boomer" is a word used for a military submarine that is used as a nuclear missile platform first. Larger subs usually are meant for this, a first strike weapon in case of a war as they carry nukes. They can of course use torpedoes in naval combat as well, but that is not their primary function. The smaller submarine from the other Russian captain that was hunting the Red October was the hunter type, smaller and leaner, meant for direct combat with other submarines and boats.

Someone probably already explained this in the last 11 months, but there are two types of sonar. Passive sonar is listening for sounds of things that are in the water. It can pick up almost anything above a certain level (which is why when they are trying to be silent, people can't talk in more than a whisper, the receivers are so sensitive that it can even pick up noises inside another vessel some distance away), the downside of that is that if you are quiet enough, you cannot be heard, and because of the propeller noise, passive sonar is completely blind to anything behind the submarine.
Active sonar is where the vessel sends out a loud ping of noise, and they record the sounds that echo back to them. This has the advantage of being able to detect almost anything within a certain range around the submarine, but has the disadvantage that if you are looking for an enemy vessel, because of the loud ping you just sent out they now know where you are too.

Planes are able to identify a submarine underwater by a device called the magnetic anomaly detector that can magnetically detect large metal objects beneath the surface. P-3 Orions are able to detect, track with sonar buoys, and then drop torpedoes or depth charges to destroy the sub.

A "berth" in terms of ships is the place at the dock where the ship ties up. To give a wide berth is to give plenty of room between the ship and the dock, so they don't hit. It means to keep plenty of room from the object you will give a "wide berth" to. Colloquially, it's often used as "to stay away from" generally. For example, you could say you will give another person a "wide berth" which will generally mean you will avoid them.

The Sonar "ping" goes in all directions. Sound travels far in water. When the sound wave encounters and object, it is reflected, (echoes) back and is picked up by the sending ship. The closer to an object, the closer the pings will be together (active sonar). The ship's receiver microphones can detect from which direction the echo is coming, thus giving a position. The speed of the echo is then used to determine distance.

"Giving someone/something a wide berth" means to give it plenty of room. I like the way the accents were generally handled in this movie. For the bulk of the film the crew of the Red October are all speaking Russian, and we hear the English translation, without Russian accents. Sean Connery’s Scottish accent substitutes for Ramius’s Lithuanian accent, etc. When we get to parts of the movie where the Russian characters are speaking English, we get accents (though Ramius still has his Scottish accent.)

Biss, while you are correct we haven't discovered everything that's in the ocean and it's huge.. keep in mind the water pressure as you go down further. creatures that live down there wouldn't survive up here, just as we can't survive down there not just because of air, but because the water pressure is so massive. There's no telling what's down there, but a squid would have a hard time with a submarine like that one. that's a big submarine, and it's made of strong metal designed for the water pressure. the squid is made of flesh.

One clarification but the crew didn't think they were going to nuke an American city. He told them their orders were to get near the American coast and conduct missile DRILLS. To practice but not actually launch nukes. The false orders were a "training mission" one that gave a plausible reason for why the sub was going so close to American so the captain could setup the defection.

Active Sonar and Passive Sonar. Active Sonar creates a "Ping" of sound that travels out from the sonar array, reflects off the target (and everything else) and returns to the sonar array. The Active system using a computer and tech then builds a "map" of the environment and things moving in it. Passive Sonar just listens to everything and tried to identify important sounds and ignore everything else. Then the sonar tech thinks he hears singing, he's listening to passive sonar. When the Russian Captain "Verifies range to target" they are using active sonar. Active sonar is a two way thing. Like yelling in the dark vs, just sitting quietly and listening.

The Clancy novel specifies Red October was named after a tractor assembly plant just outside Moscow, which was, in turn, nsmed after the Russian Revolution that overthrew the Tsarist rule.
The Typhoon subs, as NATO called them, were called Alfa by the Soviets. NATO used the name Alfa for a Soviet attack biat called Lira, which is still thought to be the fastest sub class ever built - possibly because the shiekding around the reactor was dangerously thin, saving weight at the cost of possible radiation exp ou sure for the crew. The submarine Red October was supposed to play tag with originally, was an Alfa/Lira, that's why it was able to burst in on the scene in the movie climax despite being several days behind in the chase. So a Typhoon/Alfa has to duel a Alfa/Lira.

It wasn't fake news. What they were implying is that this story could be true, or not. But it's a secret. This was during the cold war when the US and Soviet Russia played a lot of cat and mouse games with each other, A boomer is a nickname for a very large submarine. The captain is Sean Connery. Very famous actor who played James Bond. He's Scottish, and rumor has it that he refused to do a fake Russian accent, so they let him keep his Scottish accent. There were actually quite a few real Russian actors in there too, so their accents were good, but the Americans had so-so accents. But Sean Connery knew he would get a lot of criticism if his accent was not good, so he said no. The US Navy actually has DSRV rescue subs. I was in the Navy and used to repair subs and worked on one of those DSRV's. As far as the "mistakes, this movie's special effects were considered to be very good at the time. There was no CGI, so the subs were actually miniatures and the the underwater scenes were filmed in a room full of smoke to make it look like water. Thanks for this reaction. You're smart and figured a lot of things out, and it's one of the reasons I like your channel

29:25 "How would an anti-submarine aircraft find a submarine when they're underwater so deep?"
    Sonar.
Sonar sends a soundwave out through the water. If that wave hits something like a submarine for example, it bounces back to the sonar receiver.
For sonar to work properly, the signal must be sent and received in the water.
So aircraft like this one drop lots of "sonobuoys" that float on the surface, send sonar signals into the water, detect whatever bounces back, then radio the results to the aircraft.

  • @kingscorpion7346
    @kingscorpion7346 ปีที่แล้ว +1

regarding sonar; many submarines have several sonar; in the nose of the vessel called the conal sonar, sonar down the sides called the conformal sonar (but because of the noise of the ocean along the sides, its practically useless...), and finally the towed sonar array, the most sensitive sonar that can hear from much further away from a target and its range of hearing is much cleaner than the others. in the movie, the Russians used a maneuver called Crazy Ivan; turning 360 degrees to see if anyone would be behind them. in reality, the towed sonar array makes it so that that kind of maneuver would by pointless as it wouldn't be needed.

About the language. They wanted Sean Connery as lead and he couldn't do a Russian accent so they came up with that neat transition. This allowed Sean Connery to be comfortable and concentrate on his acting instead of his accent. It works because you still believe he is Russian despite his obvious Scottish accent because he is a great actor. These are the concessions that movies have to make.

  • @matthawkins8880

46:28 "Yards. Feets. I just need km and m."
    This one is easy.
    1 yard = 1 meter.
Not exactly, but close enough to understand.
So when the guy said "600 yards" you think "600m" and you'll be super close (It's really about 550 but unless you're building a house or something, the 1:1 approximation is close enough to translate movies).
And 1 foot is 1/3 of a yard or meter, so if he had said "600 feet" instead, just divide by 3 and think it's 200m and you'll be close enough.

I served aboard a U.S. Navy Frigate, similar to the surface ship that is seen picking up the crew of the Red October, during the time that the movie is set. We were an anti sub warfare ship. We played the game with the Soviet subs in the North Atlantic. The North Atlantic is unofficially considered U.S. Navy territory because we have so many naval assets in the waters of the North Atlantic. Fun fact, at that time Frigates and their bigger brothers Destroyers used oil fired boilers as their main power systems. The Frigate I was aboard required two days to build up steam for her to get underway. I know because we had to take one of our sister ship's missions last minute and we couldn't get underway for two days.

46:44 the Army uses SI, but on submarines we use nautical units (nautical miles, yards), for (1) tradition and (2) the nautical units take the curvature of the earth into account. 🙂

29:36 they can drop a sonar set into the water and listen for the boat.
On submarines, we consider high altitude aircraft that do ASW to be a joke, lmao.
You see, the Navy uses ASW = anti-submarine warfare. But on a submarine it means auxiliary seawater, one of the mechanical systems on the submarine.
So when a surface guy says he is in asw, we say, "oh, so you're a machinist mate who works on the auxiliary seawater system?" lmao. 🙂

That little sub that imploded was a commercial enterprise. The owner didn't want to pay the fees involved with getting it CERTIFIED safe by experts. He died with his clients. Greed kills.
Yes, Alec Baldwin shot his cinematographer on set in New Mexico, about an hour from me in Albuquerque. The charges were dropped but the "armourer" -- the 24yo woman in charge of guns on set -- is subject to charges. It was her job to ensure the rounds inside the gun were blanks. How a live round got in there will be debated forever. Rumor says it was sabotage against the armourer, who is a local. I've lived here 11 years, and apparently, NM has a history of people holding grudges. But it's also possible that crew members took some guns during a break to shoot cans, and the guns weren't rechecked (so says Wikipedia). To me, there's shouldn't have been live rounds within 5 miles of the set.
I've been to Los Alamos NM a few times. It's a great little town in the mountains. My brother's friend works at the Lab. He lives on Oppenheimer Way! Two things about that town. It has the highest per capita income in the US. And you can drive on the public road by the Lab, but your car will be stopped, and a guard will look at your license. The same thing happens if you approach from the west. I've never seen that anywhere else. If you have a NM license, no sweat. If you don't, I assume they ask more questions.
