  • The second installment in a series of Hats & Beards videos brings us to the pork pie hat. Every man should have one in his wardrobe.
In this video I talk about the structure and design of the pork pie ( amzn.to/3MAfZTI ) , why it is so named, its history, how to wear one, who should wear one, and who should not.

I have always loved wearing hats and have a nice collection. I love these videos! Since I've been shaving my head and grew my beard out (thank you for those tutorials!) I've been expanding my collection. Looking forward to the next one.

I’m short and a bit round, so I’d probably look like Odd Job if I wore one.

Being follically challenged myself, I've now started wearing hats just about every day, not because I shave my head but for protection. Mostly wear baseball caps, but I do have an Akubra and want a couple more now

That hat looks fantastic on you Greg. Walter White was exactly who I thought of when I first saw the hat. Very interesting story on it as well. Take care my friend.

I was initially nervous when I got mine, I anticipated it not being a regular hat, but a "special" hat like my Bowler and Top Hat... But I actually really like the look and feel of this hat...

That hat looks good on you, Greg. How about a video/ review on a newspaper boys hat please? I think that hat would suit you.

I'm guessing 'English pastry hat' and 'Melton Mowbray hat' are American terms, because here in the UK, they're never called either of those. Melton Mowbray is famous for only one thing, which is actual pork pies (which are revolting, in my humble opinion. Fat and gristle in pastry 🤮). Also, although you can certainly find pork pie hats with feathers in stores and online, a traditional pork pie hat is feather-free. I believe the feather was added in the US several decades ago and it became a thing for some reason. Also, traditional pork pie hats don't have a bow. They have a ribbon with something that looks like a bow, but actually isn't a bow at all. Its a length of ribbon which could be fastened to the wearer's clothes during periods of high winds so that the hat didn't fly away, never to be seen again. I'm not a hat weirdo or anything but my father was a milliner in London so I learned a few things from him 😀

I love this comment. It’s helpful getting insight from someone closer to the scene of which I’m referring.
Also, I’m glad you let me know about the pork pies. I wondered if anyone could enlighten me as to the taste of them. They do look disgusting. How you described them is exactly how I thought they would be.
Thanks for commenting, I really appreciate it!
I hope you chime in again.

@@GregBoswell428 well from my very little experience of pork pies (I avoid them like you wouldn't believe), they're made from the shoulder of a pig (which is super fatty) and the meat is chopped into tiny little cubes and then seasoned with herbs, so it tastes like herby fatty gristly pork, which is then encased in a pie crust, but between the crust and the meat is some kind of gross pig flavor gelatine. There's also another variety which has a whole hard boiled egg inside the pig shoulder meat, and I think its called a Gala pie (which is gah-la rather than gay-la), and both types are served with pickled swede (Rutabaga) and cheese. You now know more about pork pies than you'll ever need to know. Trust me on this: avoid.

I didn’t know of those diamond pork pie hats, I really like that take on it. Hats sure can transform a look, especially when bearded. 👍🏻
