00:00 Decline of Jewelry Introduction
It is sometimes confusing for those new to Classic Style to learn how commonly jewelry is employed as a Classic Style accessory. This is because in society at large especially mainstream Western cultures, there is a perception that men do not or should not wear jewelry.
01:05 The History of Men’s Jewelry
During a seismic sartorial shift known as the Grande Renonciation Masculine (or the Great Male Renunciation), this menswear movement originated in France and was essentially a renunciation, or rejection, of the aesthetics which had typified high-end menswear for centuries.
02:50 Male Jewelry's Golden Age
The end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century saw the general standardization of accessories that we now recognize as Classic Menswear Jewelry.
During the Golden Age of Menswear from the mid-1920s to the early 1960s, jewelry was a ubiquitous sight on well-dressed gentlemen. Especially during the so-called “Accessories Renaissances”.
03:58 Jewelry: Boom and Bust
The late 1960s and 1970s were one of the most turbulent periods in history. Cultural forces valorized the unique, highly personal, and the new while the burgeoning force of fast fashion. The 60s and 70s saw men's jewelry assume proportions, proliferation, and popularity.
05:49 Why Men Stopped: 1. Gendered Perceptions
06:53 2. Implied Compensation
08:19 3. It's Distracting
09:24 4. Perceived Inconvenience
10:23 5. Hard To Find Genuine, Good Value
11:49 6. Lack of Knowledge & Experience
We’ve learned why men generally stopped wearing jewelry and explained why we feel that jewelry still has an important role to play in contemporary Classic Menswear. Whether or not you integrate jewelry into your personal style, is a personal choice.

I've worn jewelry ever since I was 18. The trick is to be tasteful and not overdo it. Men's jewelry is rather wonderful and usually better quality if you spend a few bucks.
It's making a comeback!
What jewelry do you enjoy wearing?
@@gentlemansgazettein my opinion
Simple rings and chains
Preston waking up in a suit. . . .😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lol I unintentionally woke up in a suit😂 Went to a formal event late at night and was soooo tired that when I got home I collapsed on the couch. When I woke up I was super surprised by the attire that I had on that I accidentally didn't change out of 😂. Me and preston can't be the only ones. Has anyone else experienced something similar?
@@anthonybancheri5524yes, all the time my friend! 😁
We'd like to say this was staged, but...😂
@@gentlemansgazette do you people actually expect to be taken seriously?
I think jewellery still has quite the place in modern menswear. Men’s jewellery, at its very core, has always been utilitarian, or ar the very least hierarchical. Sure men today would not wear the van Cleef and Arpels Romeo and Juliet collection, but rings, necklaces, and bejewelled watches will always have their space.
Rubbish. I wear a solid gold chain, bracelet, wedding band, and my grandfathers retirement ring as a pinky ring every single day!
Stay fly fellas
All the history is so intriguing and fun to listen to! Awesome video
Thank you! Very glad to hear you found it interesting 🙌
I've been around very successful and highly paid corporate types. They all fit the same mold when it comes to jewelry. Without exception they all wore only their wedding band and their class ring. For a watch, they all wore a classic tank style or a round understated gold face.
corporate drones, wether highly paid or not so highly paid are still corporate drones. most are tasteless drones wearing the same corporate drone uniform. 🙄
@@kittytrailCouldn't have put it better myself.
I still wear jewelry every day
What do you wear? Asking because my Dad nor my hubby & brothers wear wedding bands. They all love a good watch & was a time that gold chains were involved.
Poshie
@@samanthab1923 I wear watches bracelets wedding ring necklace and occasional pocket watches when I wear a waistcoat.
@@robertdurham3594 I like that. Very dapper. My mom & I have extensive jewelry collections. I don’t wear as much of it today but my son, my only, has always liked playing with it. I have to say it rubbed off. He’s 26 now & wears it all. 👍
@@samanthab1923 Thank you. I try my best .
Very informative, thank you!
Thank you for another amazing video
I knew a guy who lost his ring finger in farm equipment, my dad didn't wear jewelry at work her worked on the railroad.
I'll only buy my jewelry from my local jewelry store family own for over 50 years my hometown is around 3500 people.
I am 1 of the many who still use and wear a pocket watch
Thanks for the feature guys! I'm glad you like the way i use jewelry.
Well fellas, I think men not wearing jewelry anynomore is the least of the problems we're facing nowadays, as far as menswear is concerned.
Just look around when you're out and about. ;)
true that jewellery must fit the occasion but, my wedding band, gold chain bracelet and signet ring are pretty much part of my hands by now, i never take them off
Mens jewellery is determined by the character of the wearer... men with confidence generally don't have a problem with wearing jewellery.... AND is also determined by your outfit... that's my 10cents worth..😊
Where did you learn those myths?
@@Saber23 from the great forefathers in the clouds of Mt. OLYMPUS...😁
thank you info
I’ve worn rings for about 4 years consistently. I have worn a sterling silver ring on my left middle finger for over a year, and I almost never remove it. My finger is a little deformed because of it, and I have a ring tan. I encourage everyone to wear more jewelry
Sven is ready to attend an underground auction with those chains.
Who says we've stopped?) Though, I still do not really get into wearing cufflinks. I guess, it's until I buy some really nice pair to show off with.
Some of us still do......
Real men never stopped wearing jewellery... 😉
Any advice on Brooches? Should I pin it on an ascot or on the shoulder. Or even use it at all.
Your speaking skills are improving!
This is a very beautiful pen. I wonder how much work got into the lacquering.
I love the B roll acting 😂
I'm always wearing 3 necklaces at the same time but I always hide them underneath my clothes. What's the point of wearing them you might ask? Answer, they're just for myself. At least that's how I see it.
Preston IS the only pun master around here. Although I am not sure Kyle WROTE these puns, they came across as VERY forced. Sometimes you have to do a double take on Preston's puns. Not so in the introduction here.
Have they stopped? I wear a watch and my wedding ring, that’s it.
Punch a hole in your ear get a necklace come on.
Where did you get that silver ring at minute 13:16 from?
Because in some countries a piece of jewelry is worth more than life itself, so it's not worth losing your life 🤣
change of country is needed in that case. either go to another, no problem country or implement a Filipino or Salvadorian _problem removal program._ 🔫😏👌
of course you'll need to do it _stylishly_ enough with fine leather gloves and a fine silk tie with tie bar and cufflinks and _swell_ leather shoes. 😼
Unless you're a gangster with a gat and a crew. Then they lose. Not you!😊
Glad to see and hear Mr. Thibodeaux after a while.

I think there is a time and place for fashion/fantasy jewelry that your can get for 5-20€, and that is when you just want to try out a new style but still unsure about how it will work.
Lordy, Lordy, Lordy, I do love a well dressed man. Jewelry my dad wore, tie pin, tie bar, signet ring, watch (engagement present from mom), cuff links, and a gold crucifix or Saint Micheal necklace worn under his shirt. As far as I know all my brothers wear the same but only when getting all fancy. Those of us that identify more with our Native American side of the family wear everything all together, and look grand.
I'd like to know how to pull off a pocket watch a tuxedo with a cumberband
Signet rings are where it's at. I wear one all the time.
I love Kyle's videos!
Always a pleasure to listen to Kyle speak.
I wear my wedding ring and a watch which is hidden under a shirt cuff most of the time. And even that is a bit too much, I think. I find my watch to be very useful, although I could easily live without it. Jewelry is almost always about showing off and attracting attention, even when people claim that it is "understated". Of course there are exceptions, but not many.
Violent bullies and criminals. Thats why
Facts!!
For goodness sake guys, where do you live where you wear a sport coat and gold cufflinks but can't even walk down the street because of fear of psychos!? Time for a change of scenery if that's the case. Something a gentleman should already know without saying.

Im currently in pakistan - flashy large rings are in style here.

I think a tie pin is the sexiest jewelry a man can have. It’s nothing extravagant, but it’s undoubtedly elegant
💯
I'd say that rings are pretty trendy, and has been since the 2010s.
True but Preston is still a Master with delivery hahaha but I will give you the ranking of number 2
7:15 a good look is important but education is importanter.
Well this one didn't stop, and I have no intention of ever stopping!
Great Man renunciation would do a nice video
wow you are absolutely handsome
great video
In my country Gypsies love gold and jewelry
Overall, a fine video. But please drop the "fragrance portion" of the GG videos! There is now way that Kyle's fragrance "goes" with his outfit. His jewelry compliments his look. His socks compliments his shoes. The fragrance complements NOTHING about his look. It would smell the same if he was wearing beach shorts and flip flops.
Fragrance does complement a look, as we've discussed in other videos. There are some fragrances better suited to evening wear than day wear, which is why we like to describe how we've applied certain fragrances to our outfits.
Royals in Europe wear pinky rings. I would say it is a classically elegant jewelry piece.
Mr T as Baracus doesn't fall in this category
Come to Asia. Everyone wears a piece of jewelry, men and women.
We even have gold teeth.
Q: Why did men stop wearing jewelry?
A: Self preservation. Walk through a major American city covered in gold and let me know how your day goes! 💀
❤
I wear silver tie bars, platinum & gold rings and a platinum watch. Jewellery for ever.
I think that some of the arguments are invalid.
Just because ancient Egyptians wore jewelry doesn't mean that men today should do the same. That's a logical fallacy called "appeal to tradition".
In a similar way, just because in certain culture men wear tons of jewelry does not mean that all men in all cultures should do the same.
I think in Western society it is generally a rule of thumb that the more a man is accessorized, the more feminine he looks. If that's your thing, then go for it. There is a reason why classic men outfit is so simple.
I haven't seen men stop wearing jewelry. At all
There wouldn't be still millions of dollar watches. And gold being sold every day
I didn't stop I just don't have many reasons to wear them.
Are you a rock climber?
@@moorshound3243 no just no reason to dress up
That's an interesting comment.
@@Aurora-bv1ys is it?
@@RollingDutchmann I think it is. It changes the conversation from why did we stop doing something to why is it needed in the first place. That's quite a shift in perspective.
Its frivolous spending; also depending on what city you're in may ask for trouble.
Define frivolous?
@@dandiehm8414 unnecessary.
@@SimpleTanksBy that definition ties, pocket squares, vests, sports coats, undershirts, scarves, hats, and gloves are all frivolous. I don't happen to agree.
@dandiehm8414 we're talking about jewelry. Not clothing.
Gloves, scarves, under shirts are necessary in cold weather aka proper cold weather layers and protection. Smh.
expensive, and easy way to identify yourself as a mugging target.
Stop living in a third world country.
Not really! You're pinky ring usually gives it away that you might be a gangster with a crew like Preston mentioned here!😊
"Why did men stop-"
We didn't? Men wear jewelry all the time, mostly rings, a necklace, guages, snake bites, bracelets, etc. It's still very common.
Ever been to the hood lol
Stay out of the hood! You don't wear this stuff in the hood lol!
@@ericwilliams4300 i mean I haven't but I just think of big chains and stuff, so an absolute statement like the title of this video doesn't really apply.
Hugo Boss Watch? Thats the opposite of what GG stands for. Cheap, low quality product with a fashion brand name slapped on it and sold for a high price compared to its actual worth. There are so many better alternatives in that price range.
This shows how gender roles are completely a social construct
Nope. All it shows is that tastes can change in a culture. Something you can clearly see with our current mode of dress.
A man is still a man. And a woman a woman. No social construct at play here.
@@ruvort1 What makes a woman a woman?
I think men including myself are always compensating for one thing or another whether we want to acknowledge it or not. say what you will but jewelry on men is feminine unless your a rocker but more so it just looks like your trying too hard and over cooking your look. but to each their own.
NEWS FLASH: they are just trying to sell your their jewlery. they are accessories salesman.
You really want to wear the cufflinks and collar bars?
I like this stuff its interesting but lets be real here.
I wear cufflinks almost every day in the fall , winter, and early spring. And collar bars when I can. I have multiple watches and several rings. I owned all of these before I began watching the Gentlemen's Gazette videos.
Well of course they are salesmen. What's wrong with that? Their videos are great marketing because its genuinely useful to the viewer. That said, I'll likely never buy anything from them since I live in the UK and will buy UK brands, but the knowledge is excellent
It’s because younger people are broke af.
Boo your puns are weak
cuff links are awful
I love them, got silver grenades and Harley pan head cuff links. I want the tiny shotgun ones next that you can actually break the action of, so cool.
I think they are great!
Why did men STOP wearing? WHY did men START!? Ornamental is a female attribute. Men wear practical.
Yeah, that's a pretty dumb statement.
Yeah, I only wear polyester cargo jumpsuits. Everything else is for pansies.
Man has a certain nature that is opposite of females. This is basic fact. Women for the most part lean toward adornment
@cpurizumu sorry kiddo; THATs the way it has been. Please go forth and enjoy your sagging pants, torn jeans, and any other current trending ornamental outfits that make you "look" like you are alive and active. Water will wet you, fire will burn you. Comment stands firm. Perhaps the observer should reconsider THEIR stupidity!?
