    TRILBY
Also referred to as a sloucher or slouch hat and named for the heroine of an 1894 novel by George Du Maurier. The trilby is sort of a little brother to the standard fedora. Like the fedora, the trilby also features a creased tapered crown with a front pinch but it's slightly more streamlined with a shorter snap brim which usually features a simple sewn edge and sometimes a very narrow band across the bottom of the crown. Originally associated primarily with the trench coat, the trilby evolved in the 1920s to a softer hat worn often in the English countryside and also at the racetrack. For these reasons, it's typically seen as a slightly more informal hat than the standard Fedora but not by much. In recent years, small trilbies with very narrow brims often printed in loud patterns across the hat and made from synthetic materials became a popular fashion item, however, these types of trilbies also quickly developed something of an unsavory reputation and brought the standard fedora down with them to a certain extent. However, if you stick to wearing a classically styled trilby, as I do for most of my own personal hats, you'll be able to overcome this stigma. Also, they do look particularly good on men with strong facial features so take that into consideration as well.
    HOMBURG
Next to the top hat, the Homburg is the most formal of all men's hats. It's named from the German spa and resort town where it was first seen and also where it was popularized by King Edward the seventh when he was then still Prince of Wales, on vacation in the 1890s. Proper for both day and evening wear, the black or dark blue Homburg is worn with a dark business suit, stroller suit, or tuxedo depending on the occasion and also pairs well with a Chesterfield overcoat in winter in other various colors. Also, if you'd like to check out our guide on proper Black Tie attire as well as our guide on morning dress, you can consult those guides here. The Homburg is constructed with much more stiffness than the fedora and features a brim with a slight curl around the edge that's also typically faced in the same sort of ribbon that you'll find around the crown. Speaking of the crown, the homburg's crown is typically very tall and also features a center dent. A favorite hat of diplomats and politicians like Winston Churchill and also featured prominently in The Godfather film series, the Homburg typically looks best on old and more distinguished gentlemen as well as men with defined facial features. You can still wear a Homburg if you have a rounder face, however, just try to find one with a slightly lower crown and a bit of a wider brim to balance things out.
    PORK PIE
Also called the English pastry hat, the pork pie got its name from its telescoped crown which features a slight lip around the upper edge of the crown and therefore looks similar to a traditional English meat pie. Normally featuring a snap brim, pork pies flourished among college students in the 1930s and were also popularized by Hollywood stars like Fred Astaire and Cary Grant. Pork pies are definitely on the more casual end of the spectrum as full brimmed hats go and they can tend to give the wearer a slightly squat appearance. As such, shorter men and men with rounder faces should exercise caution when wishing to wear a pork pie.
Out of the styles that we covered today, which one do you think that you might be able to incorporate into your wardrobe first?

Of all these, I'm a pork-pie hat man, myself. I'm a short guy, but with a slender build, I tend to go for the ones with a flat brim and shorter crown. I find it goes with all sorts of things I tend to wear, be it causal or smarter, very versatile.

Fedora or Trilby for me. Love all the old noir films from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Wore a fedora often with a Pierre Cardin black wool overcoat when I live and worked in NYC. I still like a straw fedora or Trilby for summer. Even for sports teams I like this look. I just purchased an orange with black band straw Trilby and stuck a clear button logo for the Baltimore Orioles on it.

Really good content Preston. I've been studying hats for a brief period of time and begun to see how stiles changed with the time, and I think some of them should come back. For me one of the greatest hats of history that loss his space on wardrobes with the centuries was the tricorne hat, an old fashion from the 18th century. I really think that bring it back to these days would be amazing.
Anyway, great video and hugs from Brazil. By the way sorry if I wrote something wrong, my English is a work in progress.

Definitely makes me feel more upper classy, and seems to ask for more formal attire in order to feel good. Made me also buy a white panama hat for summer use, as it doesn't require formal wear, and goes well with lighter summer styles.

Happen to have a vintage trilby in olive rabbit fur that had a single top crease in it when I got it after Grandpa passed away. The brim edge was folded over and sewn. I had to resize it by a full inch. The hatter used the original sweatband, and inserted a piece of leather. I preferred the open dress crease and had dimples added to the front. The brim was abnormally short so I had the hatter un-stitch the brim and bind it in black ribbon. The original wide black ribbon band was retained along with the wind string.

I have a black Henschel pork pie hat, which I wear with the brim snapped all the way down. It was only offered in black. It's the shortest brimmed hat I own at 2 inches, with the rest of my hats being 2.5 or 3 inches. I have a long oval face, and while a pork pie may be considered short, I still like how it looks on me. Definitely more of a casual style, but stylish nonetheless. Thank you for the videos.

Dang, Preston! Your outfit today was very nice! Glad to see this video. I have a couple of trilbies, but I've been afraid to wear them, because here at Iowa State, nobody dresses traditionally anymore, not even professors. Even though I always try my best to wear them the right way, with collared shirts, especially when wearing sweaters over my dress shirts, and I have a strong jawline, nose, and forehead. That said, I still never felt like I have the confidence to wear them because nobody else does, and due to the stigma. I have one in all black with a black band and one in sort of a grey tweed with a black band, so they're also traditional. Great video! Thanks for letting me know I can get away with wearing them! It's great to see how you've progressed Preston! Noticeably less nervous and much more confident! Keep it up!

I want to bring it to the dry cleaners just once because during the dying process it got a tad wrinkled and weathered looking, but I'm concerned that the dry cleaning process may affect the dye in the wool and have it fade closer back to navy blue. I wear a beige trilby to match a vintage London Fog gabardine for practical reasons: I cannot wear a regular toque (french Canadian tuque) made of wool in winter. Whatever hat I wear has to have an inner lining. For my Aquascutum long overcoat (I do not share Raphael's opinion on overcoats that fall well below the knees) I wear rabbit wool hard anthracite Pannizi. Here again, the intention is practical; the hat is water proof and is perfect to wear with a Barbour jacket also. So it is a good solution if you don't want to lug around an umbrella.

A list of quality hat brands would be most helpful.

There are so many custom hatters out there that the list would be pretty darn long.

advice on wearing a brown fedora/trilby with black ribbon? I have a vintge Cavanagh hat (w/ edge) in these colors. traditional fashion rules were not to pair brown and black, but rules were meant to be broken (and in a hat , on a black-skinned person who is brown skinned and black haired, can't be too faux pas?)

What is the average brim size of a classic trilby? I think a trilby might look better on me than a fedora, (I'm a skinny guy) but I don't want a modern style trilby with a brim that is way too small. Thanks.

I couldn't help but seeing a few celebrities and characters in movies. It would be great if you had a history of hats in American cinema.

I'm going to be super honest.
I didn't like Preston at all at first. He was just lacking the right tone and confidence to be on gentleman's gazette (Compared to Raphael, that is).
But after watching this video, I see some awesome improvements.
Please keep up the good work, Preston. It's nice to see you on GG.

I've started wearing a trilby (a cheap black one) to school and most guys make fun of me for it, but lots of girls compliment it so I guess it evens out. Also everyone calls it a fedora.
