Hiya! I'm really happy for everyone who found this video helpful. I'm grateful for all the game recommendations and all the feedback. Kinda sorry I didn't use a better mic, but wasn't really planning for 20,000 views. I was thinking more along the lines of 2,000 when I wrote this video. :D
Since some of you are getting (rightfully!) excited over a political comment I made and sometimes draw wild conclusions, let me clarify:
    - Yes, I do not condone Russian aggression in Ukraine.
    - But also I do not condone Russophobia. A lot of Russians do not support the war either. All of you guys are absolutely welcome here.
    - I do not condone Stalinist apologia. I appreciate the efforts of Russian partisans, but I do not appreciate the medal from Moscow at the end of Partisans 1941.
    - I do not condone American interventionism/imperialism.
    - I do not condone British colonialism.
    - I do not condone Polish nationalism.
    - I do not condone racism.
    - I do not condone any country's aggression towards any other country, or any war crime that has been perpetrated against any group ever.
Feel free to discuss politics as much as you want. Are any games on this list American or Polish or Chinese propaganda? Are any of them harmful? Go ahead, comment to your heart's content! Just please don't put words in other people's mouth and be civil. We are all people and we all share the same planet, so let's be nice to each other. :)

Man am I glad that YT recced this video to me because wow I was utterly obsessed with Desperados 1 demo back in the day, to the point of learning about warez just so that I can dl and play the full game, because gaming was such an expensive hobby in early 2000s indonesia and i was a broke kid. Shadow tactics was such a wonderful revival, and Desperados 3's announcement filled me with sheer joy.

After Commandos 2, we gamers were starved for nearly two decades. Mimimi has single-handedly revived the genre. The upcoming Shadow Gambit already looks to be a winner. The least we can do is to support them commercially and keep the genre alive.

These type of Realtime Strategy Stealth games are one of the most underrated genre in gaming
I remember playing only commandos 2 back when i was a kid, not knowing what to do (except shooting enemies with guns and uses disguises, because i don't know english then). And now, i'm on my 20s and finished some of it
    Commandos Behind Enemy Lines
    Commandos 2
    Commandos 3
Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun (and Aiko's Choice DLC)
    Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive
    Desperados 3
    And Partisans 1941

My uncle introduced me to Desperadoes when I was about 10 years old, I used to spend hours trying to finish every level asking my uncle for tips how to complete, often he wouldn't tell me and would make me figure stuff out, it was my first PC game.
For me as well Shadow Tactics comes out better than Desperadoes 3, the story is better and by the end you feel Hayato's anger and become more vicious with your strategies. Its one of the best games I have ever played.

Loved the video, broseph! Been searching for more Commando-like games recently. I have to make a suggestion to add to this list.
Aliens: Dark Descent meets all your commandoments!
    Isometric perspective? Check.
    2. Each character in the squad has different abilities. Check. Their abilities are all equally useful depending on the situation as well.
    3. Emphasis on stealth? Check. You may not think so given the trailers. However, the more combat you get into, the more the hive is alerted, which means the harder the mission becomes until it's untenable. If you don't practice stealth, you will not win.
    4. Enemy Vision cones? Check. Unless you're being pedantic. No cones, but vision circles and lines informing you that enemy doesn't see you, is about to see you or has found you.
    5. Save scumming as an intentional design. Absolutely. Even in the first mission, there's a boss fight that if you just walk in without a plan, you will be decimated. There's no warning, and there are other times the game will just take a massive dump on you. You just have to ration your saves, however, since it follows a risk vs. reward playstyle. As someone who grew up playing the Commandos games, I would say that A:DD absolutely belongs on this list. 10/10 it's my favorite game of 2023.

Hey, I'm that one guy from Czech Republic that at least knows about Korea: Forgotten conflict, but I must be upfront right away.
The only thing I know about this game is that it wasn't great and me and my dad played it once by accident.
My dad was a HUGE fan of the original Commandos Behind Enemy Lines and Commandos Beyond the Call of Duty.
When I was sick and he was home with me to take care of me, he used to play and I was laying down on the couch watching him play.
When he bought Commandos 2 we both did a somewhat of a competetion who'll beat it first with ALL the bonus mission medals... maaan good times, but when we were about to get Commandos 3, let's just say my dad wasn't exactly happy to ... BUY ... every single game :^)
To be honest back in the day, most of the games were impossible to get here, as long as the game didn't have an OFFICIAL Czech translation, getting your hands on a copy was quite the hard task so many people who know how to burn CDs ran these "small businesses" of selling games/music CDs and to this day I have TONS of these CDs ... well they are at my parent's house, but we all have 'em.
And when he heard from his friend that he knows a guy that knows a guy that's sellin' burned CDs of Commandos 3? My dad just have him the money and one week later we had that CD home, both ready the play the shit outta that game, but it was the aforementioned ... well, garbage.
At the time we knew like "Hi, yes, no, goodbye and please" and even movies used to change names between episodes so we thought they might've just changed the name completely to something else :^)
But I digress, the intro of the game if I remember was straight ripoff of the Commandos 2 intro, with the real life footage, but for some reason I remember it looked like those old FMV Command & Conquer type of shite. We both played the first mission and we for the love of god couldn't kill the first guard.
Every time we tried to knife him, our character would get stuck and just wouldn't follow him over to the next vagon.
The next thing I remember is my dad somewhat pissed off he payed for such bullshit :^)
Later that day we had an icecream since he said He'd rather die from his Diabetes problems than play any of that game.
It's 100% among the ton of other CDs so when I'll stop by and maybe remember, I'll try to pick it up and ran it on either virtual machine or I'm willing to bet one of our old PCs are still gonna be kept in the basement somewhere :^)
Off topic: We used to play Might and Magic 6, 7 and 8 as a whole family.
My parents, my brother and sister and me all had dedicated save spots, we all had turns and collectively clawed our way towards the end of each game.
My dad always had this issue of finding his way around the world, since he never remembered which location leads to another.
So my mom drew a huge map of all the locations how they are connected and on each page was a huge map of each location with all the buildings, dungeons... all the houses had text if there's a teacher and if they are either an expert, master or grandmaster.
Which potion color do what, combinations of potions to create white and black potions.
All the quest guides where certain quest items are kept and so on...
We even used to play god damn Quake on LAN to decide who's gonna clean the dishes ... I fucking love my family for real
My family FOR SURE ain't perfect, but man these memories of playing all those games together or against each other...
Age of Empires 1 & 2, Starcraft, Quake and Quake 3 Arena, Contra, Battle City on NES (well, polish bootleg of famicom console called "Micro Genius IQ 502" also known as PEGASUS in Poland and in Russia it was called "Dendi" if I'm not mistaken)
I seriously consider my childhood perfect.
Always bruised up from playing outside through out the day and in the evening we used to play on PC or NES ... what else would child need innit?

Commandos 1 was so scary. While it get's somewhat "easy" when you abuse the quick-save system, i had multiple situations, in which i saved a gamestate where some enemy corpses where hidden too badly, causing an alarm later down the line. So then i kinda have to start the mission over

  • @marianotrod
    @marianotrod ปีที่แล้ว +2

The first commandos and its expansion were really hard but you could cheese through just by hiding behind a wall and picking off enemies one by one when they came to investigate after the shooting noises. It was difficult and messy but it could get you through a tough mission if you were tired of playing properly.
The trick with the first games (I finished both) was to place barrels and explosives in a way that would allow you to blow up the barracks (buildings with a flag on them) all at once. If you failed and a barrack didn't go down (maybe the barrel or bomb was not close enough), the ruckus would make the surviving building spawn lots of reinforcements that would start scouring the map kinda randomly. Very hard to avoid but you could then resort to ambushing them and finish them off.
The process of sneaking around placing barrels and bombs in the perfect spots (though it needed some testing via save-scumming) was really exciting and very unique. The problem with this was that not all characters were able to place bombs or pick up heavy stuff and this forced the player to slowly move around the map until the dominoes were all set. Then it was just a matter of zooming out the camera and watching the fireworks. Very nice memories. Great games.

commandos: origins announced btw, it is such a crime this RTT genre so underutilized, i can't believe there is only 17 games since it appeared. Played a lot commandos 2 and desperados: wanted dead and alive back in the days never complained how hard it is since i thought 'games' supposed to be hard like this but turns out this genre is one of the hardest LOL. It is a damn shame mimimi games closed down but i can understand this genre is pretty niche and production value must be high since one of requirement is high replay value. I really want desperados 3 sequel that cover event between it and desperados: wanted dead or alive man, even thq nordics consider it on survey one year after desperados 3 released. :(

I recall a game called "Soldiers: Heroes of WW2" which is worth a try, especially because of the high grade of realism (tanks need to be refueled, ammo is limited etc).
A bummer you didn't list Star Trek: Away Team. Yes, it has its bugs- a lot to be honest. But the story and the graphics make it worth playing, not to mention the cameos of Michael Dorn and Brent Spiner. Especially the ending is well written.
Another honest suggestion is "War on Terror". That game is rather unknown but there are many mechanics to combine.
I have to agree that Mimimi games takes the cake. I loved the asian setting of shadow tactics and Desperados III was fun to play- until I had to consult a solution guide on how to position the crew to beat Frank that is. The graphics are timeless and the characters are well developed as well as the endless possiblities on how to use the characters and abilities.
Desperados 1 was a hard son of a b*tch but I celebrated the second when I managed to beat 'El Diablo' after a lot of trial and error-ing.
I can't wait to see the next Mimimi game and until then I am gonna try the Add on for Shadow Tactics and the Desperados III DLCs.
A good video, you earned a like.

Commandos 2 is one my favorite games of all time, and honestly I managed to figure out all of these mechanics you mentioned in the game without reading any manual when I was 11-12 years old. At that time I basically just pressed random keys on the keyboard to find out what each did, like the Inspecting/Examine action by clicking W or throwing cigarettes by pressing T.
Wasn't intuitive, but wasn't impossible to figure out either. My biggest annoyance was with Commandos 3 was that they changed all the keybinds you were familiar with from Commandos 2.
Edit: I wrote these things above before hearing your opinion about Commandos 3 and I'm glad I wasn't the only one annoyed about the rebindings they did and how lackluster this game was. :D

    • @waskerton

I couldn't figure out two things in Commandos 2: how to rotate the camera and open doors, and that's because you have to press two buttons at once to do these things. And you have to know that you CAN do these things at all, which wasn't obvious either. :D My respect that you were able to work it out without a manual.
Yep, the rebinds in Commandos 3 were awful. :D

i only watched the first 3 minutes and felt i need to comment already: this video so far is VERY competently made, either you are a natural or you put good thought into the structure, laying the groundwork with the 5 rules and presenting the father of the genre as an example is something the average new youtube dude wouldnt make, also your script if you used one is well written, you clearly get across what you want to tell the audience, your delivery could use some work, but also has kind of a rough charm, so i have one question: why so far is only one video on your channel? you already have over 130 subscribers, thats a massive amount for just one video, i hope you didnt give up or something because again - just the first 3 minutes made me write this comment, please make more content :)

Great vid, mimimi already put some serious details on their shadow gambit title, I sense its going places.
I feel a real desire to see a commandos like set in the last of us universe. Killing clickers with breakble shives in a well timed fashion as well as the general limited supplies could really lend itself well to the style.

Not only The Last of Us, I feel like zombies in general have potential. I always liked this one mission in Desperados where you're caught in a fight between the bandits and the army, and I always liked how in Commandos 2 you can get wild animals to eat an enemy. So how about an entire game built around these mechanics. Two words: horde management. :D

    • @eylam90
      @eylam90 ปีที่แล้ว

@@waskerton plenty of aspects from the older games can be made more central in future rtt games. Horde management, ambushes, under water and above water gameplay, prison escapes, social stealth (modern spies/ hitman commandos style would be dope).
I even felt what commandos 3 tried to do with Stalingrad where the map gradually expands and escalates into a different play style was a cool idea with a somewhat poor application.

@@waskerton I actually work as a game and level designer though not on this kind of games. Maybe in the future 😃
Still, from my perspective, the most crucial aspect of RTT is a level design which compliments the character rooster, its why games where you can select the team like Robin hood, feel too watered down to me, puzzle wise and very easy to abuse.
Shadow tactics, on the other hand felt very balanced in letting every character have their moment to shine, with the most abuse able character being let go in the latter part of the game. It was a brilliant decision both story and gameplay wise.
It is why the open ended style of shadow gambit concernes me a bit, but let's see what Mimimi can pull off.

@@eylam90 I hear what you're saying, but as flawed as Commandos 2 was (being very open ended, but also very prone to exploits and overusing certain mechanics), it made me think that sandbox-type design can work in this genre. Same thing with Robin Hood. Sure, such game would have to be easier and less puzzle-like, but other aspects can be the focus instead (exploration, story, player choice). So I too am worried that Mimimi might be out of their depth here, but... well, I'm happy that they're experimenting with something different. So far they did a good job polishing the genre into great shape, so... :)

And there are another one game that fit in genre - Legacy 1917
During development, we are inspired by such classic indie blockbusters as Plague Tale: Innocence, Death’s Door and Commandos, but at the same time we create our own unique style and ideas:
Hide in multilevel environments, use items to distract and confuse enemies, solve puzzles by analyzing one’s surroundings.
Explore various locations and interact with NPCs who’s unique stories add to the immersive setting of the adventure.
This grim post-war environment depicting real locations becomes a perfect platform to tell the story of the rivalling brothers and the people who were looking to rebuild their lives following a clash of epochs.
Distinct visuals with original art for each level that were inspired by classical and contemporary artists enhance the immersive effect the adventure’s emotional storytelling provides.
An original soundtrack inspired by classical music from the beginning of XXth century sends players off into the intense atmosphere of the revolution-torn country.

Honestly, my first Commandos-like game are Commandos 2, i think i was around 4-6 years old, and since English is not my first language, i struggled very hard and only managed to finish Das Boot Silent Killers (literally the 2nd Mission in the game), and that all thanks to Spy's disguise ability.
More than a decade passed, i suddenly remembered this game when searching for new games, and i replayed this game again and finally managed to finish every level when i was 17, i think you'll understand my joy when i finished a game that i basically can't play years ago.
So, after Commandos 2, i actually tried earlier Commandos games and Desperados too and struggled to finish most of the levels, those games are hard af, but they're still good honestly...
A year after those games, i came across Shadow Tactics, probably one of the best game in the genre, and it even has a unique setting (a Japanese Edo Period), the twist also hurts me btw.
And not long after this, i also get the Aiko's choice DLC. It's centered more around Aiko and her past, and i really like the story before the teams incident in the main game. (Btw, nice to play as Mugen again). So since that days, i have high hopes for Mimimi.
A year also passed, and i got Desperados 3.
Personally, i'm having fun with it despite the pace is a bit slower than Shadow Tactics. It's also cool seeing the origins of John Cooper and the Gang too.
Finally, just a year ago, i head Mimimi is also making a new RTS game called Shadow Gambit.
The setting is... Well, pretty interesting (Supernatural Pirates), but seeing the gameplay is cool and it seems to have new cool additions too.
Unfortunately, i also heard the news of Mimimi games shutting down weeks ago. I'm thankful for them to revive the genre and successfully on doing it, and i hope they're doing well from here on out

Even though I never managed to complete both games because I hadn't had the patience to plan every move to successfully accomplish all objectives. At some point at this period I watched a video of a game that looked like Commandos, and I think I found it on the installation CDs of Commandos because Internet wasn't that well known and used back then as today, but you could enter buildings and I tried hardly to enter buildings in Commandos but it didn't work. It took some time until I realized it the game in the video was Commandos 2: Men of Courage. Shortly after that I forced my father to take me to the next store to buy Commandos 2. It's somewhat like desperados (more toward action and gunfight)

Thanks! :) Here are some quick impressions on Shadow Gambit: Pirates of the Caribbean-type setting is great, I like that they are doubling down on magical elements (the mind tricks of Isabelle were my favorite mechanics in Desperados III), and well, it looks like another Mimimi game. I rarely trust a developer, but I don't think these guys are going to release a blunder. They know their stuff by now. I expect there may be some controversy around difficulty (I get a feeling they'll make the game a lot more open and as a result more easy to play/hard to master) and maybe some criticism around art (the main character looks like a cosplayer, not a pirate, but oh well). Other than that, I expect another fine Mimimi joint.

I bought Korea: Forgotten Conflict with a magazine and it was a great game, spent many hours on it. It is a shame the game never had the same spot like Commandos series. It has vehicles that you can drive around and the difficulty was challenging. I never imagined it was Czech and I can't imagine how it could have get here on Brazil.

i played a game on dos in the 80's where a single comando moved from south to north on a few diff maps but included permadeath suply drops xp stealth kills and customiezable load outs . it was very simple relative to what your talking about but you should look for it

Commandos: Beyond the call of Duty was the best game of the genre, especially on level Hard. Even better was its demo, which was basically Commandos BEL but bigger and way harder (most of the "helps" available in BTCoD was not available in the demo, especially spy's clothing). Great old times, when games were made for gamers and not for micropayments.

Found another little indie one: 'Wooden battles: spec ops'
A level editor is a nice touch imo.
Recently announced there is also 'Plunder masters'. Not much is known at the moment, but it looks to be at least adjacent to the genre

Hey man great video. I think Commandos 1 is a 10/10 iconic game that started a whole genre so i would say that 1 is nr 1. I also saw it and played it in 1998 at 11 years old and i was shocked how cool it was. I finished it in my 30s. The best games right now are Shadow Tactics + Desperados 3(finished both). Btw you should be proud to be polish, you are doing great - game of the year Witcher 3, 3 witcher games, all good. Lots of good metal bands. Vader might be the best death metal band. You guys rock.

War Mongrel and Partisans 1941 are BOTH the best Commando like today.

Great video, only I preferred Desperados 3 over Shadow tactics. I felt the characters were more fun personality wise and a lot of quality of life features like speed up were a great addition.

As a commandos fan myself having played them back at release (Ye I'm that old) and later bying them again on steam I have always felt the glaring missing element:
When the guards walk their patrol and knows that their buddies does the same for that shift and have seen John Doe walk the same path for an hour and then he is suddently not there anymore and you don't react or care if he has been missing for the last 20 min..
I know it is a layer of complexity the developers were probably not wanting to take on but I think it would make sense if the guards change their patterns based on missing members of their team - walk to the missing guards point of route origin if they haven't been seen for 5 min. Although if it is one of the longer missions that will make the whole mission much much harder. if that triggers the alarm; It doesn't have to though it could just be that a guard more is summoned from the guardhouse if you haven't blown that up within those 5-10 min or that the guard patterns are now changed so that all the areas of the base is covered.
It felt unrealistic that a base commander and all their soldiers didn't care for half an hour that the main gate wasn't attended anymore...
But it is one of my favorite games but not as good as the BG series though :)

This is honestly one of my top favourite games among Red Dead redemption franchise. I'm on chapter 3 now and love everything about it. It's very unique.

Have you heard abou satelitte reign? It's edgy, but would consider it into the genre.
Great video, knew about most of the games since it's my favourite genre, but it's really nice to see that someone is doing high quality content about it.

Checkout "Syndicate" (1993 video game) by bullfrog. A legendary classic in my opinion. Quite hard for me. But the nostalgia runs high with this old school one. (p.s. they had a follow-up game "Syndicate Wars" which was cool too.

There was a game called Cold Zero from 2005 I think,
had a lot of fun with it when I was younger,
don't know how it would measure up now though
