    We feel terrible for the media, fans, and vendors. I was leaving the track and saw a vendors van with a California license plate on it and can only imagine the sacrifice it took to get out here. It was the right call for the safety and health of the fans to keep the public at home, and I am very happy IndyCar is continuing the weekend in an organized manor. Thank you David for your commitment to IndyCar!

      Don’t know much about Oliver, but as a fan I really appreciate the shout out to the California vendor. I think racing series forget that people do travel to see them. And Vendors as well. @@BoleDaPole 100% agree. I see article after article trying to induce public fear, but I don't see much reporting on the fact that the death rate for the Coronavirus is 0.1-0.6% (per Johns Hopkins University) which is pretty much spot on the seasonal flu when you account for the fact that there is no vaccine. And these numbers continue to go lower as more data comes in. Nowhere will you hear reported how many people died last week from the flu (which is around 3000 in the US alone). All that information would put things in perspective and restore calm. I guess increasingly irrelevant media corporations and politicians need to milk this a little for fun and profit.

      I agree with you and I hope for a better future but in all likeliness, with the Outbreak already hitting the economy hard their wont be the same amount of businesses spending money in Motorsport, meaning less sponsorship money for drivers to get drives and for races to give prize money, which'll effect entries and the amount of races per season, and I'm sad to say we may not see the grid sizes and the amount of races we've got used to seeing in recent years happen for a while

    • @velvetjones
      @velvetjones 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, kinda. The main problem was that everyone in the US government was downplaying the virus for the last 6 weeks or so. In the time that South Korea tested 150,000 people the US tested less than 3,500 because the agencies that could test people were told not to test anyone unless they met extremely specific criteria. Our intelligent and educated leaders wanted to protect the stock market from panic selling and it backfired on them. It also caused businesses and sport leagues to underestimate how easily and quickly it spread and led them to make bad decisions based on bad information. Fox news still today has "experts" on claiming that this is no big deal and it's not much worse than the flu when all the data from other countries that have been hit hard says it's many times worse than the flu and spreads even quicker because many people don't have symptoms or have very mild symptoms.
      We depend on our government to give us critical information in situations like this and they simply didn't. They downplayed it and buried their heads in the sand to protect corporate profits. When you look at donations to those politicians it's pretty easy to figure out that they are going to take care of the companies throwing tens of millions of dollars into their campaigns above anyone else and that's exactly what happened.
      If the President and congress had been more open and shared critical information concerning the virus in January when they were briefed on how quickly it spread and how potentially deadly it was businesses and sports leagues would have made changes and cancelled events without waiting until the last minute. F1 didn't cancel because they charge way too much for their race fees to hosting tracks and didn't want to be responsible for the financial losses. MotoGP and World SuperBike cancelled or postponed events last week because they had access to better information.
      it's damn hard for a company to make an informed decision calling off events that they have millions of dollars invested in when all the information they are getting is "it's not that bad" and "we have it contained" from our orange turd of a president on his twitter account. Who we vote for has consequences beyond people's 401k or hot button topics like abortion and gun control. It has real world impact on the health of the 350 million people in this country and our leaders failed miserably to do everything in their power to protect the American people. They sold each and every one of us out to try and keep the stock market up because of their corporate sponsors bottom line. Life isn't a game we win or lose based on how much money we have but that's all a large portion of the US seems to care about. Because of that companies like Nascar and Indycar didn't have the information they needed to make an earlier decision to cancel or postpone events.
      Anyone who gets their news from sources like the AP, BBC, and other international unbiased news sources knew in January that this was going to spread all over the world and will eventually make tens or hundreds of millions of people sick and that it has the potential to kill hundreds of thousands or millions of people. I started buying extra canned and dry food as well as bottled water back in mid January because it was pretty clear that this was going to be a worldwide pandemic. The rest of the US is out trying to find toilet paper and hand sanitizer because their government failed to give them adequate information that this was serious and needed to be treated as such.
      So yeah, they could have done it earlier if the president had shared the information they have had since January. Since king cheeto decided to protect rich peoples money over the health of US citizens by lying and claiming it was under control Indycar and Nascar as well as other sports like the NCAA and NBA didn't have any choice but to wait and see what happened. That resulted in last minute cancellations. The Australian GP wasn't cancelled simply because nobody wanted to take financial responsibility for cancelling the race. I think they pay somewhere near $45 or $50 million for the privilege of hosting an F1 race and Liberty Media didn't want to lose that income if there was any chance at all they could get the event to happen. Now they are down from 22 races to 16 races it appears and that means they are going to likely lose $200 million+ in the first year it looked like the company was going to make a profit off of F1.
      We need to elect leaders that have the best interest of the people in our nation held above the interests of corporate America. As long as people keep electing folks with an R next to their name that will never be the case.

      Sadly, consideration is something the world is running out of. Being considerate is something I notice on a daily basis that people are so much worse at than they were even 20 years ago. Most of the time I don't think people even realize that they're being inconsiderate to others, they've just become so accustom to doing for themselves that they don't even realize their actions are affecting someone else. If people would just slow down for a split second to think about their surroundings and how their next act might affect those around them then the entire world would be a better place.

    This is hard to believe. I hope all these cancellations help to mediate the spread of the virus, but it’s terribly sad for INDYCAR. They had such an exciting season coming up, lots of attention on the new drivers, and now it’s in danger.

      I know you're joking but from my understanding, it's more like pneumonia (it can actually lead to pneumonia). The problem is that it's still in it's infancy and we're just now figuring out how to best fight it. More than likely in due time it won't be much different than the flu or pneumonia but we're not there yet.

    • @EmyrDerfel

      It's more contagious than flu, and the infected can transmit it before they develop any symptoms. The current mortality rate is about 3% of those infected. If we don't limit the spread, there won't be enough hospital capacity or medical staff. You don't want to hear that your elderly relative didn't score high enough in triage to get treatment.

      @@JSchaffer214 We are pretty much there. Johns Hopkins University believes the Coronavirus to have a death rate of 0.1-0.6%. When you account for the fact that no one is vaccinated against the Coronavirus, these numbers put it right in line with the seasonal flu. And the numbers have only been getting smaller as more data becomes available. This had been colossally blown out of proportion and will have consequences the next time a virus comes along and is actually seriously deadly. If public officials and the media cannot be trusted to be measured in their response, this leads to lack of public trust which leads to non-compliance when it might actually matter. It's the story of the boy who cried wolf.

If this isn't put under control really fast life as we know it could be really changed and not for the best. You look at what the teams, vendors, IndyCar, and the City of St Pete has spent to put on a 3 day show is crazy and possibly run some out of business. Granted people's health is the number 1 thing that needs to be addressed and hopefully we'll get through this quickly. Thank you David for at least trying. Stay safe everyone.
