My 2010 went into limp mode. Everything I read looked like it was the tcm. Took it to JK Chevrolet in Port Arthur Tx. They called and said it needed a new trans. Full metal contamination, no reverse pressure, etc. Went and got it on a trailer and took it to Gound Chevrolet in Nacogdoches Tx. They put a tcm on it and that was all it needed. The first dealer hadn’t touched the drain plug or screw on filter, I checked because I have no faith in mechanics.
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does anybody know of a way to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost the account password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Vincenzo Aiden i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I had my 2003 Allison go into limp mode while I was on vacation. The truck had 20k on it. I lost 3rd, 5th and reverse. Initially it slipped in 3rd then went down to 2nd for limp mode. Didn’t work well on the freeway. I quickly figured out that if I stepped on it then let off as soon as it was in 3rd, it would get past 3rd into 4th then 5th, slip in 5th then go back to limp in 4th. The dealer wasn’t able to fix it and I managed to limp home for about 500 miles. My dealer back home found a damaged clutch seal that was installed incorrectly from the factory.
In my mechanic days, any trans rebuild or replace ALWAYS had a reverse trans cooler flush before installation . Chrysler made it mandatory to honor any warranties of their rebuilt units.
DHD made what looked like a post regarding R&D on Facebook about the new 10 speed. Haven't seen anyone else post anything about it - not to say other shops aren't opening them up, but I'd keep in the loop with DHD and see what they post.
Im going to be getting your LML stealth stage1 for my 16 2500 I have 22x12s with 35 1250s should I worry about the trans giving out? I will be mostly driving unloaded around town on highways in optimised stock or sport/economy tunes not beating it and towing my 36' camper in heavy tow haul. Also I will be get your tcm tuning also. Thanks for the video and great info
I have yet to see a video that specifically addresses clearances and what to do with increased frictions and steels. Maybe you could make one sometime.
That is a great point, even with having upgraded friction and steels in clutch packs, it is CRITICAL they are set to the proper clearance or you will be right back to square one
What could potentially cause a pretty firm/odd 3-4 upshift in my LML? It doesn’t do it any other shift that I can tell, but you can also hear a clunk or a click sound whenever it shifts, and it doesn’t feel like any of the other shifts. It’s done it for maybe 2 years now and I’ve never been able to figure out the cause. Have no other issues whatsoever with the trans. Bone stock truck till 2500 miles ago, has 112k on the clock. I’ve changed the internal filter twice now and run only Transynd fluid.
Hard to say based on just that description. Maybe look into an Edge monitor or something similar that can monitor converter slip and other transmission-related PIDs.
@@Duramaxtuner I have Ez Lynk now, and it shows no excessive converter slip and trans temps are very low. I’m completely stumped and can’t figure anything out. Like I said it’s never cause any issues at all, it just doesn’t feel right at all. But if I’m in the throttle maybe 3/4 and above, it’s smooth as can be. It’s crazy. Thanks for the response though!
How would you recommend swapping a 5.9 cummins with a 545 allison in a 2000 MT-45 step van, to a Duramax with a newer Allison? The 5.9 runs good but would wake the dead and the 545 does not go into high gear.
Ok just seeing your video and have questions about limp mode truck has done 3 times with my rv and I have 2004.5 how or when should I get really concerned being my first diesel truck. There is no burnt fluid is clean changed nothing in the pan out of the normal . So I guess my question is how worried should I be?
My transmission went into limp mode in cold weather and seemed like it was slipping . It had codes for solenoids 3 was one forgot the other . Was going to try changing the fluid and filters . Run more fluid out from the upper trans cooling line .. Should I get it looked at ?
@underdog576967 I would definitely get that checked out! There is definitely the possibility that something could have happened internally to cause this. Chancing the fluid and filter could be a good way to see if any contamination has taken place. However you'll likely have to drain it all again if you don't find anything and nothing changes.
my 6sp(LMM truck) has a hard 1-2 shift and similar feeling when TC locks when fluid is cold. once it warms up everything is smooth. just changed spin on filter and fluid.
Adaptive learning duse not active till tje trans sees 148°f. I was given extensive warnings about my Allison would be running too cold behind my cumins using medium duty truck programming that locks in 2nd gear(~20mph) . They had me run the cooler circuit through the liquid to air out front, then the liquid to liquid and back to the trans, otherwise the transmission would never be in the active learning during Montana Winters.
I just changed my spin on filter also. 5 days ago. Just bought truck and my assumption was correct. No magnet 🧲. I had recently bought filter with magnet for this reason
I have an Allison transmission in a 2006 chevy 5500 truck it has an L shaped shift sensor connector I can not figure out how to disconnect it. Any ideas how this comes off?
Not a diesel, but it has an ally 1000. It's the 8.1. Here's a question that has stumped the local chevy dealer. Had to swap out the TPS, went with a new throttle body. The hill descent has stopped working, once in a blue moon in 5th gear, most of the time in 4th gear. I've owned it for 9 years. Dealers service manager says "it doesn't have hill descent", well it did up until the dreaded reduce power issue. So what do I need to do to get the TPS working with this sweet 1000 5 speed. Trans has 200,000 miles on it.
So question caconversions in a SEMA show on TH-camtalks about the Alison and gm programing causing a lot heat because the programing is done to accommodate the customers with smooth and gentle shift which create heat and heat is bad. So they said if the owner of the truck could flash the ecm and tell it that it’s mated to a manual trans then let the Alison shift on it’s own the transmission would be better and “learn” and definitely last longer. So my question to you guys, is this true?
That would be very hard to prove. In our experience, a smooth shifting Allison generally lasts the life of the truck if you're not out chasing power. So when someone says the heat caused by smooth shifting is a problem, I wonder what the grounds for that claim is?
Also when swapping out the tranny or when your flushing out the tranny cooler don’t forget about flushing the fluid lines as well. A lot of crap can collect and stay in the line and end up right into the new tranny. The lines are junk from the factory anyways they seem to fail at all the crimp metal to rubber joints (fittings) due to vibration. So I would suggest if swapping out the tranny then replace the lines with a nice aftermarket replacement. That’s one of the few Times when I would not even bother with the OEM lines since I don’t think they fixed the problem. Now I believe my torque converter is failing in my tranny. What is the point to where I’m able to just swap out the torque converter before it destroys my tranny
Can a code 751 be caused from clutch slippage? A solenoid, stuck off. New solenoids, harness and all connections from trans to tcm good continuity. Shifts perfect and no codes until it gets warm
I do the external spin on filter change every other oil change. Fluid looks good and smells good (if u like that smell). Been thinking about doing a fluid change soon. Don't know prior history of the service before 142k mi. It's at 170k mi now. But prior owner towed a 5er as we also do occasionally. Some people swear by keeping the slightly dirty fluid in there with the grip you get from the particles. What's your opinion??
Can you please give some advice my 2002 duramax had a reman allison put in this past fall. got it back ran great but had a code for the torque converter solenoid so it went back to the shop. got it back a week or 2 later now the truck has no power from a stop can you give me any advice. don't want to go back to the shop was not a good experience.
I’ve gotten an issue with my 15’ lml. Sometimes the transmission runs when I come to a complete stop! So when I accelerate again it hits hard again. It’s got 80,000 miles on it. This happens at times. Even when it’s ok regen. What should I do?
Have a 2003 LB7 Drive into shop and swaped in a good used trans from a 2004 LLY Issue truck won’t move and has shift inhibited code on dash Question 2004 LLY Trans has G shift solenoid would this cause this issues ? not used in the 03 also can the valve body and wiring from the old trans just be swaped in to possibly fix the issue? Thanks
So what's the benefits of adding a Transgo Jr to an 06-07 duramax Allison? Considering doing this but not sure if it's a real benefit. Have 102k on my rig.
cxvasqu for what it’s worth I added one to my LMM probably 100k miles ago. Slightly firmer shifts. That’s about all I’ve noticed. Never did a hard relearn either. Just swapped and drove it.
Haven't been able to notice a difference here. My tranny would throw p0762 only when towing, did the transgo jr kit to try to help, now truck will not move out of driveway ! Throws same code instantly locking into 4th. On the 4th removal of valve body now and $200 just in fluid. It's definitely not a bandaid like I have herd.
Hello all! I'm new to this game as far as the duramax allison world! I just bought a 2024 2500 HD with the 10 speed. Mine keeps acting up after pulling out on the highway getting up to speed but not getting after it. Just part throttle almost to 50 mph maybe 5-6 shift or 6-7th shift it pauses like it missed a shift? truck hesitates and jerks then drops shift and shifts up and works past it. will do it hot or cold no codes yet but am afraid of a huge failure at the worst time! Any Ideas? Ive been to the dealer multiple times with this issue. They did a software update and a TCM reprogramming with SPS
Mine won't go into reverse but it will go in ever forward gear I've replaced tcc solenoid repinned the tcm harness pins checked the pass through connector checked everything possible
@cubpak89 If reverse doesn't work 3rd and 5th should also have issues. What year truck? If its an 01-02 truck it might be going into range shift inhibit. They dont have a message center on dash so the Reverse indicator just blinks when it wont engage.
Do you guys ever convert the GM Allison 1000s to the Allison 1000 with the Allison control package?. I read the GM software allows for soft and comfortable shifts while the NON-gm Allison shifts hard like a medium-rated bigger truck.
I have a 2002 Freightliner step van (medium duty) with a 5.9 Cummins and the Allison 1000. The upshifts are quick and sharp, but the downshifts are the real difference. I rarely have to use my brakes in normal driving because the downshifts are so intense on slowing the truck down.
Which Allison is better the 6 speed or 10 speed? Im about to buy a chevy. Im a auto/diesel mechanic but its not my niche of specialization. Im an imports guy at heart. Just need technical advice.
The 10 speed is not a true Allison transmission. It's an Allison Branded transmission. Check out this video to get the full answer th-cam.com/video/bQh8jpVHxbo/w-d-xo.html
Can you guys verify the rumor that the new 10 speed Superduty and GM HD pickups are the same transmission. I’ve heard the same thing as another guy on here that the GM 10 speed is just certified by Allison but not built by them. Is it just like the light duty 10 Speed where Ford and GM designed them together but tuned them differently.
@@Duramaxtuner HELP!!! URGENT MANNNN lol, 05 duramax dropped early 06 Lbz idk what tranny.. was leaking fluid truck sat for a while from the pto plates the truck has 86k tranny was replaced at 40k.. I have a 2006 international 3200 with a VT365 with a Allison 1000 or 2000 will the transmission shift properly if I put a 7.3L IDI engine in it. I was told the transmission was independent of the engine and it controls itself
While I am not familiar with that truck specifically, I would guess it has the Allison 2000. You can verify by checking the TCM. Take a picture of the sticker and give us a call, 815-568-7920.
HUNTING? Please help, I have a 2002 Winnebago adventure 8.1 gas and Allison 1000 5 speed. Only 40 k miles. Pull a 4500 lb jeep. Overheated it one time in Louisiana, summertime. Changed fluid of course and looked good. Never goes in limp. But hunts between 4th and 5th anywhere. Then I’m forced to switch off 5th (OD). 4 mpg, ouch. I’m guessing total weight around 24,000 lbs.
@@Duramaxtuner I would like you folks to do a diagnosis but I live in northern Canada. Had dealer do a diagnosis . Epic failure . Cost 1g . 5th 6th trailer haul mode not working . Pushes hard just before stopping. Just after stopping , maybe on second ,there is a noticable bump or jar . Any idea whats going on 275 km. 07 gmc
It depends on what year truck you have, but in general, you should always let your tuner know if you have a built transmission so they can dial in the Cal appropriately.
My trans has been limped a few times... it’s currently going in neutral before going into third and I have to let off and get back on it. Is my trans smoked ? Internals gone?
My question is, why with the high hp guys, why swap out the allison for a 48re dodge trans? Never really made sense to me due to those trans having issues from the beginning.
Great info Nick. My question is . I have a 2011 with your EZlynk tunes . When pulling my trailer . Bumper tow up to 8k . If I’m on it a bit and it shifts I will hear grinding sound occasionally. What might that be ? Sometimes I can get it to do it unloaded as well. Heber
Grinding sounds are rarely good, unless you're in the coffee business. If it's the first time the trans has made that shift at that load then it's possible it's just learning and will smooth out on the next shift. The allison is an adaptive learning trans and is subject to getting confused briefly between towing and non-towing.
Could you clarify please are you talking about the A1000 that was in the GM class 2-3 trucks or an Allison 1000 series that you would not find in the GM class 2-3, but in the GM 4500-5500-6500? The A1000 is a very old transmission over a decade old. When Allison and GM parted ways, GM retained the rights to the A1000, and could make it royalty free so long as it was not modified by GM. An Allison 1000 is not the same as the GM A1000 found in Sierra's and Silverado's through model year 2018. The A1000 is still a very good transmission, it's just not an Allison 1000 series. D
I have a bio diesel question to ask. Normally I noticed that the bio diesel blend at the pumps in Oregon are 15 percent. Here about a week ago at a station I noticed that the pump showed that that blend was 20 percent. After getting fuel in about week or so I started having issues with my Duramax to get it to regenerate. It would throw a code and then put the truck in detune mode. My engine is the LMM 2008. Is this caused by the 5 percent increase in the bio fuel?
Possibly but more likely that it is just a coincidence in timing. We have plenty of pumps here in IL with 20% bio and I wouldn't expect that to be the emissions equipment killer.
griffin pierce, I’m in the same boat, my transmission is ok but I blew a head gasket on my 03 lb7, the shops wanted $6000 to fix it, truck probably isn’t worth much more than that so I’ve been tearing it apart for a week, got the heads off today, I fully understand why the shops want so much!
@@griffinpierce7691 Man...I totally feel ya. "I'm on the same 🚢" but different vehicle. If it makes you feel better, mines is in a very bad state. The engine dies and starts while driving(in less than a second, crazy shit, no codes) and sometimes it won't start again after 20 or more seconds of cranking. I almost got T-Boned recently making a lefty at a light. Driving this car is like rolling the 🎲, never know when you gonna hit it (or get hit 💀😱).
How often should you change the internal transmission filter? At 75,000 miles I asked the dealer shop to change mine and he said you’re not supposed to change it ever, that just doesn’t sound right to me, thanks.
@@freedomisntfree_44 Welded planetary to ring gear failures can only be a result of no lube circuit oil pressure. I know, I have dis-assembled 3000 and 4000 series Allison's with big hammers and wedges. Not pretty!! Welded clutch packs(steels to frictions) another story.
@@UNKAGLEN You are thinking of direct drive transmissions commonly found in semi's. These yes should have the drive shaft removed. But for the Duramax you just need to put the transfer case in neutral.
Anybody have any info on why it would start doing a very hard downshift from 2nd to 1st ? I towed a light load less than 5k lbs for about 80 miles down a mountain highway with only about 5 miles of any step uphill grade. Didn't push it hard and it has never gone into limp mode. But as soon as I dropped the trailer the hardshift started and had persisted for 3+ weeks. Fluid is good and changed spin off filter. Any help would be appreciated.
My 01 duramax also shifts down hard from 2 to 1 does it for time and then shifts normal for a while has done this 4 times over 5 years don't know why but would like to know
OR you could just get a manual transmission and not have any of these problems. Now I know you guys are gonna say, “oh it doesn’t come with a manual option”, if your at the point where you have already rebuilt the trans or had a failure why not throw in an Eaton Manual or Allison Manual?
Cost, expertise and time would be 3 reasons not to manual swap a newer truck. Also, the 01-07 (I think, maybe someone else can clarify) there was a ZF6 manual transmission offered.
Best information and explanation of the transmission or any transmission. Thanks so much.

3 torque converter modes.

We have not done this. Interesting.
I have a 2002 Freightliner step van (medium duty) with a 5.9 Cummins and the Allison 1000. The upshifts are quick and sharp, but the downshifts are the real difference. I rarely have to use my brakes in normal driving because the downshifts are so intense on slowing the truck down.
my 8.1 had it from pervious owner. it was AWESOME!
@@jacobmoses3712 appreciate it. Already bought a Duramax. I love it but not like the 6-speeds.
Not the same.
What is the best year Allison to buy for a Fummins build? Looking to stay around 600hp/1000ftlb's
Any of the 6 speeds can be built to this power level fairly easily.

Do ALL Allison 1000’s come with the PTO access on both sides.. or only special order? And if there is a PTO option are the same on each side?
Yes, but most do not have the PTO drive gear. They usually have a reluctor for speed sensor (intermediate shaft).
In the 68rfe 4th gear is direct drive why wouldn’t it go into limp in direct drive
How much is it to build a Allison 1000 Too make it pretty much bulletproof
$8K-$10K depending on bullet proof you want to make it.
Could you please address what makes the lockup engage. Centrifugal? Hydraulic? E,electric? Thanks
There's an electronic solenoid that opens to supply hydraulic pressure to the TCC clutch(es)

I’ve seen some tuners have built in trans tuning. Wouldn’t that raise line pressure& save an Allison of am I overthinking this? Thanks.
Sounds like slipping clutches. It could be something else, hard to tell via YT comments, but that is a good place to start.
Thank you that was great
My question is, why with the high hp guys, why swap out the allison for a 48re dodge trans? Never really made sense to me due to those trans having issues from the beginning.
Tremendous aftermarket support.upgrades for every part to 48s
Wow nice knowledge
I have allison 6 speed front 2 speed revers in my Mobile crane is it same one or diffrent
Different.
Nick Priegnitz Thank you Nick.
Awesome video, thanks for the info
Can’t you just work around all that with a trans. Cooler and more line pressure??
At what point would you upgrade the c2 hub ?
Any build going over 750 RWHP we suggest it.
Most anything will be an improvement over GM transmissions LOL.
I couldn't goto a 1000 series after running the 3000 series with a built in retarder.
GM makes some of the toughest trans....Dodge have issues with any with 4 or more gears. Ford are a little better, but GMs 4L80 can take a lot of abuse
agree my buddy has a 2500 gmc with the 4l80 with 300025 thousand miles on his work truck @@AandWProductions
Mines limped 4 times in the last 2 years. I still drive it to work everyday cause my ass is broke
🤣😞
@@GIGABACHI i feel like alit of guys are the same way. Atleast its not running built trans tunes on a stock trans
griffin pierce, I’m in the same boat, my transmission is ok but I blew a head gasket on my 03 lb7, the shops wanted $6000 to fix it, truck probably isn’t worth much more than that so I’ve been tearing it apart for a week, got the heads off today, I fully understand why the shops want so much!
Your trans will be fine. Just remember, it gets easier to limp each time you do it tho.
Hahaha that kid got stage fright and the other dude took over the whole video
Alot less parts then I would of thought
Allison's are a great trans to learn on. They are super simple.
How often should you change the internal transmission filter? At 75,000 miles I asked the dealer shop to change mine and he said you’re not supposed to change it ever, that just doesn’t sound right to me, thanks.
10-15k miles
Spin on every 10k or second oil change. Internal only needs to be replaced when you do a rebuild. But it won't hurt anything if you do change it.
Duramax 315 thanks man, I think I’ll change it myself, I’ve been wondering if it would hurt anything the way the dealer talked.
My Allison shudders in reverse only Anyone know why Thanks
Potentially a torque converter issue.
I second some of the questions about the 10 speed, what up with it? Have you got your hands on it? What do we know about it?

I know of an Allison that’s in the junk yard with the gears welder together...
Probably the result of being towed with the drive installed. Never, ever tow an automatic trans with the drive line installed!!!!
Was actually towing an empty trailer with it
@@freedomisntfree_44 Welded planetary to ring gear failures can only be a result of no lube circuit oil pressure.
@@thomasmolitor960 True, if truck is a 4-wheel drive. I have seen Allison's welded together when towed as little as 3 to 4 miles.
Best fluid for trans? Just curious
Why does General Motors Chevrolet put a transmission in their truck and then program it to self destruct makes no sense
GMC screws you on the 2020 models
