Do shad move shallow in the winter and if so is that why the blue catfish at shallow? I’ve Been catching some good eater size fish in 4 to 8 ft but can’t catch shad or bait in anything less that 15 or 20 ft. How come?
That is an excellent question! I thought the same thing last year when I discovered shallow water blues in cold water. I noticed shad starting at 15 plus feet and deeper and never caught any shallow with my net. I think if there are some shallow but they are scattered or even possibly shad that have died during weather change and blown into the shallow water. Either way, those blues will be there in that shallow water until next spring and early summer

Varies but they’ll hold in all depths.

when fishing like this you can use bacon. It is a reaction bite . you dont need shad . I heard of a guy using a piece of his white t-shirt

Yes, some gizzard shad will move into shallow water when it’s cold
