No one has ever captured the joy and cruelty of cycling the way Mohoric did in this interview. Chapeu! Every bike racer, amateur or professional, can relate to his humility and recognition that a peloton is full of rock stars. It is a sport that keeps you grounded while, at his level, demanding inhumane beautiful suffering.. But the way he articulated the emotions, honored Mader, thanked his support staff, hinted at imposter syndrome...just wow. Classy, smart, and immensely talented guy. He made a lot of new friends and fans today.

An anecdote of Matej that is well known in his home country is that at 18 years he was having his final exams at the end of middle school (the ones that determine if you go to uni or not) while he was competing in the one week long Tour of Slovenia. For his chemistry exam he made a request to have his exam in another part of Slovenia where the stage was taking place. He did the exam wearing his cycling jersey and he got almost maximum points which put him in the top few percent of all students that year.

I think Matej was talking more about the strength of the riders around him, moreso than doubting his own abilities. He knows he is a great rider with the ability to win the biggest races. He knows the amount of preparation he put into being in peak form for the Tour. And yet, it's *still* hard to follow wheels because everyone else is so strong at the Tour. It's a reminder of just how hard the Tour is for everyone involved, even a rider of Matej's class.

@@christopherdolan7330 Yeah it is something along those lines. Didn't listen to the whole interview in english, but right before, when he had done it in Slovenian, he mentioned something to the like: "Easily, it s very cruel to compete at the top, because everyone is so well prepared (he uses different words, but the meaning is sth similar) ... the last time ... when we were riding up on the (some mountain pass), I was embarrassed in front of all the fans from Slovenia ... I was completely out of energy and strength ... you are at those 140 hb per minute, 300 watts of power, that any recreational cyclists can output cuz you are just so exhausted from everything ... at the same time you have already been 3-4 months away from home etc. etc. and you feel stupid (and embarrassed) as you are trying to reach the time threshold (idk what s the correct term, dont watch cycling too much)."

Also the stage it self. It was a beast of a race. The 5th fastest stage ever. So much going on all the time. Non stop action. Sometimes a stage like this, where a breakaway often wins can be rather boring. They get an early break, get a 20 minute lead, and no action untill the last 5 km.

As fans its easy for us to forget that these guys are humans despite knowing that what they do is so bloody hard and then interviews like this remind us of the sacrifices and the suffering they must endure. This is why we watch, not because we love to see them suffer but because the suffering is what allows us to connect with them. Cycling is a beautiful sport.

It's honestly insane how a country of 2 million people can have several elite cyclists - Pogacar, Roglic, Mohoric... As a Slovak I'm jealous. We only have Peter Sagan and now that he is ending his professional career we probably won't have another rider at the TDF for the next 20 years. Maybe you guys can lend us one of your pro cyclists, since you have so many of them? People confuse our countries all the time, so nobody will even notice the switch. :D

I am so happy I have found your videos mate. Thanks for doing the hard yards, moving to Europe and putting in the time to bring these little bundles of joy to us in Australia. I try to stay up, fighting off the blinks. Eventually, I succumb to a hard days work and miss the good stuff. Your analysis is keen and much appreciated. Thanks for bringing me into the peloton, something I wish I had more time to study and analyse myself.
As for this video, I have shared it with multitudes of mates who question my need to stay up watching cycling on GCN all year round. Mohoric is so honest in this interview, relaying his true emotions. I will show this on Monday to some of my students. It is a true example of a leader who acknowledges everyone who gets him to this point. He is humble (with way too much imposter syndrome), and he honours his fellow competitors as friends, not enemies.
Thanks for the share mate, and best of luck for the future doing what you love.
