    I purchased the 'temporary spare' rim from Toyota for $117 and the tire from Discount tire for $84, plus installation. The temporary tire is the same height as the 19" Toyota tire, although the rim is only 16" and it fits under the back floor cover, with the foam blocks removed. Purchased a jack and for for less than $300 I have a spare, stored under the floor!

      Is it for prius prime 2023? Do you happen to have the model number?

      My 2023 Prius has been towed two times to the dealer just for not having a spare tire after I got a busted tire. Above all I am not able to get the tire Sze 165/50/19 in tire shops except for the dealer.it is frustrating .

    All cars should come with a spare tire and a jack. Shame on the car manufacturers for cheaping out.

      yeah, they claim they are saving weight to get that 1/10 of a mile per gallon more but you can't get any mileage when tire blows out in middle of nowhere.

      True. Same thing with Teslas.

    Someone really needs to come up with a Compact Spare Tire Fix for the Prime as there is not much information. What is out there is buy a OEM wheel and tool kit plus a compact tire, but what is needed is a solid solution on how to place in the trunk where the foam is. There are examples for the regular Prius Hybrid, but apparently the Prime is different.

    Go to a junkyard and buy a spare tire, jack, tools, and tool holder foam from an older Prius V which uses the same 5x114.3 bolt pattern as the 2023/2024 or Gen 5 Prius. Problem solved for around $250 make sure that it's from a Prius V, not a Prius 5. The Prius 1 through 5 use a different bolt pattern.

    Did you try taking the foam blocks out? There's enough room in my 2024 Ltd. for a compact spare. Unfortunately if you just remove the foam blocks, there's not enough support for the floor board; however, apparently the Mexico and Japanese versions include a different foam block that holds the donut spare and jack. Not sure if you can buy that foam in the US, so I may end up making my own support. Modern Spare also has a compact spare for it, the correct size and reported to work fine for driveability. Prime and AWD models may be a different story, but there is room underneath on the others.

    How about buying one of those compact temporary spares (donut tire)? Maybe it could even fit underneath the rear floor if you take out the foam.

    My 2017 Corvette came with run flat tires. I've had two flats (screw and razor blade) Had no trouble driving it to Discount Tires who fixed it free.

    I bought a mounted donut on ebay for about $100 for my 2019 LTD prius which, fortunately, uses the then universal spare. (Mine came off a Scion! ) Right now I toss it in the trunk if going too far out of town, but am looking into buying the foam inserts for the AWD model that came with a spare. BTW, though mine came with the goop-and-pump, they also threw in a jack!

    I live in rural Arizona. Sometimes extreme temps with sometimes no cell service are a fact of life. I have been in two situations - sidewall tears - where lack of a spare would likely have resulted in my death.

    • @robmotivetoo

      Given the severity of your predicament, I'd invest in a spare.

    You forgot to mention needing a 4-way lug wrench with a length of pipe as a cheater. For the jack I like a cheap floor jack, carried one in my Corolla all it's life.
    In lieu of jumper cables, one of those battery things to jump the starter, it also gives you a flashlight, and it is small. This stuff is not just for you, it is for others you are near. I have rescued families in parking lots with flat tires or dead batteries.

    I won't buy any car that has no spare tire this is ridiculous not even a donut tire. I know a guy who had a BMW with run flat tires and he had to head to dealer immediately if he had a flat and buy a 400-dollar tire since the run flat is ruined driving on it

    I think Toyota sell for $600 spare tire and kit with everything to install it instead of that white foam

  • @kevinsargent6282
    @kevinsargent6282 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No spare or jack, though Toyota does sell both items as optional accessories. I know on the Prime there is a specific cutout in the styrofoam to house the jack if you buy the Toyota one. Not sure about the regular Prius, the styrofoam looks different, but I am sure there is a space for it.
    I would prefer if it had a jack & spare, but it is not a dealbreaker for me as I rarely travel to rural or unpaved roads, however I do like to throw a spare in the trunk for road trips if I have the space, so I do intend to get one someday, hopefully resale.

      I need to look at my son's Prime, but I believe I saw that there is a battery pack under the styrofoam that precludes putting a spare in there. I wish that were not true, as he just had a blow out in northern New Mexico and it was a hassle to get him going again, as those Toyo tires (195-50R19) aren't available anywhere.

    Doesn't Tire Rack sells really cheap steel wheels that people buy just to use to put snow or winter tires on and don't care what they look like (use hubcaps!) Think 1980's black rims after a hubcap falls off.

    Thanks for the video. I just removed and installed summer tires same as you have I found the more noisy than my winter tires. Question for you how do you find yours ? Is there any special installation specifications? The bolts are différents of regular ones maybe special care to do what you think my model is a Prius Prime more heavy

  • @randallupton3622

    Hmmm more and more vehicles are getting away from a spare. My OCD will let me have a vehicle w/o a spare and be ok with it, yeah don’t think yours will😉. As I’ve said I’m looking at getting a new vehicle no spare/no jack. But from Tesla’s point of view a jack is just an excuse for the unthinking to go for any flat spot and that whole battery pack is flat. So I get it. Don’t think it even comes with the can-o-goo and an air pump. So more and more manufacturers are dropping spares. Now as the government keeps pushing for better mileage performance knocking 100 pounds of weight off, for a spare and a jack helps. It isn’t just the manufacturers trying to save (that does enter into it) there is also the weight. Oh I liked the picture of the tire on the roof, you could get a set of rails and put a basket up there for a spare. Plays heck with aerodynamic performance but hey beets having a dirty tire in the cabin if the vehicle. That is especially true in the unlikely event you have to change a tire.

      @robmotivetoo  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robmotivetoo I have roadside assistance. The overworked tow company took an hour and a half to come in 100 degree heat the two times I had blowouts on the freeway. Both insurance companies use the same tow service. (I live in a city of 450,000 people.) With no spare the police couldn't help me nor a helpful passerby.
