Ive tried everything using an open basket . WDT tool for at least 2 minutes to get rid of clumps and potential channeling. Tamping with a decent heavy tamper. Always comes out all over the place with no crema and a mess everywhere Ive watched you tube instructions and have followed exactly. I cant do anymore. I'm using a pressurised basket from now on Any body else having the same problem?
Like the reply above suggested, you should try grind finer. Depending on the basket, play around with the amount of coffee you use as well. Don't give up, you'll get there!
There are so many factors that affect espresso... Machine side- preheat with portafilter at least 15 minutes ( I uses a smart plug), OEM basket is trash and will clog, etc. Coffee side- coffee quality/freshness, grind size, quantity. Buy a bag of cheap coffee from Costco and practice pulling shots. Wait about 3-5 minutes after each shot. It took me 2 years to make coffee "I'm happy with" and its still not perfect.
You need fresh beans from a local (or delivery) specialty roaster, with a roast date no longer than a month ago. Stale coffee will never pull well or have crema.

Grinder settings? Shake before wdt. Ensure your bed is level before tamping.
